Hartz UltraGuard Plus made my cat VERY sick

I was at the store, and decided to buy the Hartz UltraGuard Plus, as we were out of the Frontline.  My cats, adopted 6 months ago from the Humane Society, are mostly garage and outside cats due to my allergies, so they get fleas and ticks if left untreated.  I went home, treated both cats as directed on the packaging.  Asia, who is a female calico, age 7-9, is about 10 pounds.  Tigger, a male ginger tiger, age 1-2, is about 20 pounds.

Within a day or so, I noticed that Asia was not drinking or eating.  They sleep in the garage in their puffy beds, and she was not leaving hers.  I thought maybe it was the heat, even thought the garage is pretty mild.  I took her some iced water and a special dish of food, but she was not interested.  I left it there in case she was just suffering from the heat.  It has been around 100 degrees all week in Kansas.

The next day, I noticed that Asia’s neck area looked funny.  It looked clumpy and oily, and I could see through to some very white skin in patches.  I got online right away to look at lethargy, no interest in grooming, etc.  I also decided to look up the Hartz products since I did not think it was a coincidence.  I found that they are VERY bad.

After bathing Asia, giving her a spot on the couch, and giving her extra love and attention as well as hand feeding and syringes of water, she seems to be a little better.  She is still off balance, tired, weak, and all-around under the weather. I hope that keeping her inside and hand feeding her will help improve her even more.

I am appalled that Hartz is still selling these products.  This is terrible.

    1. Wow. You’re a smart one huh? STFU and go be ignorant and negative somewhere else. Maybe with all the friends you don’t have! Lmao. Fool.

    2. No she isn’t! There is a package just for kittens over the age of 12 weeks and 5# and over I have it! Don’t be so quick to call people idiots it makes an idiot out of you

      1. Thank you my 5-month-old is sick from the very safe Hartz product for kittens and cats and they should be sued. I am afraid and staying up all night with her you can tell she is dehydrated from how she does her mouth and her eyes are huge and looks like she is terrified. Her heart beating 90 miles an hour and I am scared for her. I cannot believe there would not be more warnings. I am so afraid and pissed off now! The retarded idiots who commented earlier are like 12-year-olds probably are. And you are right they are the idiots.

      2. I wonder if some day they might come out with one that doesn’t run. Maybe a lotion consistency. If it would have just stayed put it would have been fine, but it ran down and she was able to lick it. I think she’ll be okay, but she salivated a lot and seemed a little dizzy.

    3. It says on the package I have “for kittens and cats from 12 weeks up and from 5 pounds up” they have it for cats to you know sometimes you need to watch who you call idiots, it may turn around and make an idiot out of you 😔

    4. Who Is The Retard? When They Sell That Hartz For Cats… It’s Literally Labeled “For Cats”… You Need A Lesson In Humanity.

  1. I’m so sorry about your cat. I know exactly what you are talking about. It happened to one of my kittens 11 1/2 weeks old. The kitten was very lively and I realized they had gotten fleas from their mother. I washed all of the kittens and sprayed the Hartz Ultra Guard Plus on them (first time using this). I never expected anything to happen because it is afterall made for cats. I noticed all 4 of them acting strangely still and very lethargic. Normally, they are active and hyper. I didn’t think anything of it, at the time, because I thought well this is their first time receiving a bath. One of my kittens started vomiting and having uncontrollable bouts of diharrea. I just thought that it was the cat food. While I was asleep I heard it meowing really loudly. My husband got up and tried to calm it down but it just kept on. We just ignored it, thinking that it was just getting lonely while everyone was asleep. The next morning we knew that things had taken a toll for the worse. It was laying in it’s own feces and very limp. Everytime we tried to pick it up it meowed like it was in pain. I couldn’t understand what was going on. Just the other day it was the most energetic cat I ever had. It wouldn’t eat or drink or move about. When we tried to see if it would walk it would fall over. I knew we needed to nurse it back to health so my husband and I tried to give it a syringe of water and feed it some food. It was still acting sick so we tried to let it rest and see if that would help, needless to say my cat had died by the end of the night. I was still so curious as to what really happened so I thought I’d look up the ingredients in that Hartz product and see if it was what I used on it. I found out that it is really toxic and even to small children, which bothered me because I have a 5 year old. I’m glad I found out the truth and I will never buy Hartz products again. I will make sure no one else does either.

    1. I had used this a couple times on my cat and it has always seemed to have an adverse effect on him. I used it yesterday and noticed he was drooling a little a little while ago and he had a big oily patch on his fur at the application site. I have just gone about attempting to remove the remainder from his fur with a washcloth. I am appalled at Hartz for this and am praying my kitty will be OK. I will never use this garbage again and have a good mind to sue.

  2. I bought 2 packs of hartz ultraguard for dogs at walmart recently. Even though it costs me $8, im not taking the risk to apply it on my lovable shih tzus.

    1. I’m taking mine back, this was the first time I had used the cat one on my cat and two days later all his hair came out in huge clumps and he vomited at least once. It was the amount of hair that really scared me. He’s not even shedding. I washed it all off and he’s better now I’m taking the other two tubes back to Walmart. It should be taken off the market. And I hope Hartz reads these!!

  3. Hartz Mountain Corporation has a deplorable safety record over the years. They aren’t the only manufacturer with an unacceptable safety record, BioSpot and Sergeant’s are also deplorable, but since your problem resulted from Hartz’s products you should know that their appalling history goes back to the late ’80’s and ’90’s when their product, Blockade, was pulled from the market because of a terribly high number of pet injuries and deaths. It was later reintroduced and, again, with tragic results. Hartz was cited and fined for not accurately and promptly forwarding consumer reports to the EPA as all manufacturers (and registrants) are required to do. In the early 2000’s they were required to make numberous package labeling and directions revisions on both their cat and dog insecticide ingredient products. In 2005 the EPA, probably the most lax oversight agency in the federal government, forced Hartz to terminate their cat and kitten products, issuing a Cancellation Order against Hartz’s products containing neurotoxin pesticide ingredients. The number of cat and kitten injuries and deaths was stunning and even the EPA could no longer ignore it. Please take the time to report this incident to the National Pesticide Information Center, at 1-800-858-7378. They maintain a database of pesticide-related illnesses for the EPA. The EPA uses this database to determine if dangerous pesticide products require specific action in terms of safety requirements, including up to removal from the market. Don’t let Hartz, Sergeant’s, BioSpot or any other manufacturer get away with the devastation they are causing any longer. These manufacturers count on victims’ owners taking no action or simply complaining for a week or two and then going away. Please take the time to report this terrible tragedy to Hartz as well. They are obligated by federal law to keep records and provide the EPA with the adverse incidents. They can be reached at 1-800-275-1414. Insist that they take your specific information. This keeps the pressure on these manufacturers and will assist all of us in one day ridding pet owners and their pets from this terrible, toxic garbage. I’m very sorry this has happened to you and your cats. Thank you for telling your story.

  4. I am sick. While waiting on a shipment of frontline to arrive via the USPS, I went to WalMart and bought tubes of Hartz flea med drops for cats for the napes of their necks. I applied these on Wednesday. I had no clue that this was an issue and am sick now at work with worry about my cats. My best friend, Kitty Girl (who has been a part of my life for 10 years now) is a mess with flea allergy dermatitis already and now I am appalled at what I have done to her after reading all these posts. I am waiting to get off work to go home and give her a bath in Dawn. She hates water, so I will be tore up with scratches, but have to save me girl. I have two other cats as well and will not ever jeapordize their lives again like this. Thank you for sharing your posts in an effort to save others of us from the same type of loss. I only hope that I am not too late.

  5. i just came back from the hardware store where Hartz UltraGuard for cat and kittens are sold. after reading TONS of reviews about this product, i wont be using this on my cats. We had a small flea problem due to a untreated animal living in the house. Now that they are gone theyve left there problem behind. Id rather spend the extra $$ to keep them healthy and ALIVE. Stick with the vet or go out of town to get the treatment(cheaper)
At least you will have your family member well and happy

  6. I bought Hartz UltraGuardPro for my cats (2) yesterday I applied it to 1 the other was outside and I decided I would get him later.Needless to say I am glad I put it off. About 5 hours after I applied it he jumped off the window sill and was drooling and head twitching, I though he had eatten a bug, it didn’t last long about 30 sec of odd behavior, so I passed it off. However this morning my daughter went into the kitchen and Squishy followed he proceded to have a full blown seizure lasting about two minutes, chasing things that wern’t there falling, running into to things extreme body twitches, ending with him lying on the floor unable to move still spazing with head arched back. This happened next to my back door so I opened it and let him out when he was able to move, not knowing what was wrong with him and he was scarying the crap out of my daughter. He rose and started trying to get outside. He made out but legs were stiff and wobbly. I immediately got on line after trying the 800 # on packaging, which is useless if something happens on the weekend. Found this sight and info. He just got out of the tub after having scrubbed him down with Dawn dish soap. Hoping he’ll be ok. Squishy is 4 years old and I have never had problems like this before but it is the 1st time I have evr used this product. I will be throwing the other 2 tubes away. I did leave a comment with Hartz corporation but I doubt they will return my e-mail. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!!!!

    1. Is your cat okay? I used this on my cat today and he’s been drooling really bad even after I gave him a bath. My cat seems fine other than the emense amount of drool but I’m worried, it seems your cat suffered from the same problem so in hoping your cat pulled through

  7. I treated oooone of our cats with Hartz Ultra Guard and she was aboe to lick some of it from her back. she seems a little sick what should I do, I washed the spot with water that the Hartz is on, what else should I do?

  8. Whatever you do, keep a close eye on your cat for siezures. You should wash your cat with dawn and if needed give your cat water with an eye dropper. You must flush out the system. This product led to the disturbing death of McNalley, his story is posted for October 2009, or below in stories. If tremors or seizures occur you should take your cat to the vet for the proper meds. You should call the company with the phone number on the back of the package. You should call the EPA, you should call the store you bought it from. You should look at Matt’s comment on McNalleys story, it will give you more info. You should tell anyone and everyone you know not to ever use these or any other flea product. There are a lot of natural flea prevention remedies out there. You can go to a specialty pet store, not Petsmart. I went to Mud Bay, they are on line for info. I found some very inexpensive options, even cheaper than vet flea meds. I will be sending out positive thoughts for your cat and you. I hope all will be well.

  9. I just used the Hartz Ultra Guard on my (2) cats. Their both 2 yrs. old. About 10 min. later they both started dooling then foaming from the mouth. I’m assuming it’s an allergic reaction. Both cats ran and are hiding my son is looking for them now so I can give them a bath with Dawn dish soap, Any other suggestions?

  10. Dee Dee, I am truly sorry this has happened to you and your cats. It’s another tragic story in a long line of pet injuries and deaths that bring deep loss and devastation to animals and pet owners.

You are right to wash the cats with Dawn as quickly as possible. You will want to contact a veterinarian as quickly as possible as well.

After attending to the emergency medical requirements of your cats there are some other very important steps you should take. Over the year Hartz has had one of the worst safety records in the industry. Their products containing pesticide ingredients have accounted for a significant number of the adverse incidents reported to the EPA over many years. Their appalling safety record goes back to the ’80’s and ’90’s with their product, Blockade, which was pulled from the market because of an unacceptable number of animal injuries and deaths. Hartz later attempted to re-introduce Blockade and once again they were forced to withdraw it because of a terribly high number of adverse incidents. They have been forced by the EPA to make numerous labeling revisions and they have been cited and fined for not promptly and accurately reporting adverse incidents to the EPA. Their cat and kitten products were terminated in 2006 when the EPA issued a Cancellation Order (2005) against Hartz because of their deplorable safety record. Please, take one important step to help yourself and other pets and pet owners. Please take the time to report your incident to the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC). This organization works with the EPA to compile the database of incidents and statistics that will be analyzed and used as a basis for corrective action. The NPIC can be reached at 1-800-858-7378. They are very professional, courteous and efficient. This is a critical step in the public forcing the EPA–one of the most lax oversight agencies in the federal government–to do the right thing and get these neuro-toxin pesticide ingredients out of the marketplace. Also, please call Hartz Mountain and report this incident to them. They WILL NOT be happy to hear from you, but they–-like all the manufacturers–-have an obligation under federal law to forward your report to the EPA. As I mentioned, Hartz Mountain has been cited and fined for not properly and promptly reporting these incidents in the past. Their telephone number is 1-800-275-1414. Put the pressure on Hartz by giving them the details and forcing them to report to the EPA. Also, they should be asked to reimburse your medical expenses…don’t hesitate to ask for this. Additionally, most veterinarians are willing to work with you regarding the epenses of care from these products. They have seen first hand the devastation that these products are causing–-they understand the pain and suffering. If you need financial assistance to treat or euthanize an animal most veterinarians will attempt to work with you–-don’t hesitate to ask. Thank you again; so very sorry for what has happened. It’s reprehensible that Hartz, BioSpot, Sergeant’s and others continue to injure and kill thousands of pets–-it’s absolutely unacceptable. We should all do whatever we can to prevent this from happening to other animals and families. Communications to the proper regulatory agencies, manufacturers, NPIC, the media and politicians are critical steps. All the best.

  11. We got a kitten today and she had fleas. We bought that crap Hartz makes for cats with fleas and now we have a sick kitten.
I found this site and we immediately washed her off. My husband is giving her water with a syringe. It’s midnight so I’m praying she holds on till morning when we can get her to a vet. Hartz needs a class action law suit.

  12. I had the same thing just happen to my cats. I have been using this product for at least 6 months, but I have just moved. This can cause a urinary distress in cats. Well, I did not see any problem in them since they were eating, drinking & going to the bathroom, but then I saw some fleas so I decided to put this product on them. Then the cats seemed to act sick, I figure maybe they are still having problems from the move. Within 2 days from the application instead of getting less fleas as usual they are totally infested & listless and not eating. I take them to the vet. They said my cats were extremely sick and one died, the other has been in the clinic for 2 days and is finally better. I believe that the cats were already alittle under the weather and the product made them worse quickly due to an allergy or bad batch. Beware of the product, it may work today and make them sick the next time.

  13. If you love yours cats, please listen to me.
I just dosed 2 of my cats yesterday. Within 3 hours, both of them began with frothy drooling, sneezing, and had profound lethargy. I thought it might be symptoms of car herpes,as these 2 are new to our home and we had another shelter cat that brought us that gift. However neither had fever, which accompanies the other symptoms. I contacted Hartz and they were very nonchalant about my complaint and stated this ALWAYS happens with any type of pesticide. I asked them where I could find this info on the product label and she directed me to the word “sensitivity” on the label, and explained that I had to wash them in DAWN dish soap. I very tersely explained that my cats are poisoned, not simply “sensitive” to to product, which would be itching or a dermatitis. She then placed me on hold. When she came back, she gave me a complaint claim# and told me that if my cats require medical attention I can submit the bills for reimbursement. They will also reimburse me for the product. She did, however, take the SKU number and place of purchase. She got very quiet when I asked her what to do if they died. Maybe this product is being recalled? It needs to be! I am a cat rescuer and the last thing I want to do is harm any of them. I am now in the process of bathing 6 very social felines who are in the habit of grooming each other. I have a real mess on my hands! Thanks, Hartz Mountain.

    1. Everything I am reading here is from 2009 and this from 2011. It is 2020 and I scared to death this product is killing SashaKitty. While in a tree, she was able to twist her head around and directly lick the product. She has been vomiting but then she wants to hunt. I took a wet towel with Dawn to get as much as I could off. After reading this I may have to call in for work and give her a bath. But I worry that will stress her out, where so far she is being very calm compared to stories here.
For God’s Sake!!!! This has been going on for over a decade

  14. I just bought a puppy from the humane society last week and treated him for worms and fleas today. I bought the hartz ultraguard plus for him and also for my cat and her 2 kittens. After I applied it to all of them I noticed my adult cat had these spit bubbles coming from her mouth. My dog then began to itch and scratch like crazy. I looked it up and came across this website. I immediately bathed all 4 of them in baby shampoo, I didnt have any dawn and cant get to the store right now. I hope this will work. I feel so bad for all of those who have lost pets from this garbage. I hope and pray that my babies will be alright.

  15. Chalk up another one. Bought some Hartz Ultraguard Pro today for my cat and dog at walmart. I guess I didn’t get it high enough up on the cats neck. Went for a bicycle ride, came back to find my wife very upset. He had began to foam at the mouth, drooling hot saliva, and acting sick. After rubbing the Hartz off him with a wet rag, we proceeded to try and flush his mouth with water. Found this site, and went ahead and gave him a bath.

I am very upset about this. Does Hartz not realize that cats lick themselves? My dog seems to be doing 100% fine, but will not use it on him ever again either. Hopefully Mr Mow recovers from this. He is my wife’s baby, and she would be devestated.

  16. gave my cat hartz ultraguard plus and within an hour she started foaming at the mouth and just acting strange. i googled and found this page, thank god i did. we went to the gas station and got some dawn and gave her a bath. she is doing a lot better now and even acting like her normal self. thanks for everyone who posted on this site about the hartz medication, probably saved my cats life. definitely going to report this to the EPA like someone said in this post… please everyone do the same so we can get hartz off the shelves again since clearly it shouldnt be there.

  17. I recently purchased the same product, Hartz UltraGuard Plus for cats, and it gave terrible skin allergic reaction to my 2 year old cat, Mia. Within two days after I applied the product, a large area of her hair fell out and I can see directly to her skin that was red, swollen and raw in appearance. The Vet confirmed my suspicions that it was due to this particular product she developed Focus Dermatitis.

I will never purchase this product again and I will contact the manufacturer and file a safety complaint. Perhaps if each customer that has experienced similar poor reaction should also file a complaint, maybe then something will be done about this product.

  18. Bought Hartz guard from wal mart as a quick fix at night to my cats suprise flea infestation. Im terrified by bugs so i couldnt wait until morning to buy a better brand from my veterinarian. Litterally as soon as i applied this product my cat found a way to twist her neck around just far enough to lick it. I immediately acted upon this by searching the internet to find it could be life or death i was dealing with. She quickly became lethargic and foaming/dry at the mouth. A warm bath with sensitive dish soap (such as dawn)and a comb seems to have her acting her normal self again. Still, the irresponsibility of Hartz to let hundreds of animals and their owners to suffer through sickness and sudden death. If I would not have acted sooner my cat could have died. Not only will I never buy Hartz name brand products again, but i will make it my personal duty to have them properly investegated by the EPA and other animal protective agencies like PETA. Our pets do not deserve this treatment and neither do we.

    1. I just got done bathing my cat to get the remaining product out of his fur. I soaked the whole bathroom floor in the process but don’t care as he is worth it to me. You can believe that the EPA and Hartz is going to be hearing about this from me!

  19. So we have six cats and flea meds can be expensive, so one time we decided to go cheaper and we will never do it again!!! One of our cats got so sick we thought he was going to die. He stopped eating and drinking. He was just laying and hiding and looking like he just wanted to die. We sequestered him and syringed him water, made a slurry with wet cat food and syringed that into his mouth as well. He was running a high fever as well. Finally we were able to get him to the vet and we’re informed he was going into liver failure. He got fluids and we took him home. We bathed the cats in Dawn dish soap to get the poison off. It seemed to help. For a few more days we syringed him water and eventually worked up to hand feeding him wet food and then finally on solids. We and he got very lucky and he is more or less back to normal. 🙂 One of our female cats had chemical burns on her. The kitten, luckily was too small to get the hartz or we would have lost her for sure! The other cats were lethargic and feverish for days but luckily we’re eating and drinking.
I cannot believe that this product is allowed to be on the shelves!!! I am so sorry for those of you that have lost your loves.

    1. Worst part about it, the poor cats still have fleas!! I just got off the phone with the company where I filed a complaint. Hopefully this will not happen again to other babies!!

  20. I have a siamese, her name is baby, the first time I put it on her she seemed fine, not sure if that is what cause her personality change but, I starting to think so. She used to be loving, now she is distant. Last week I applied the other dose and yesterday she started biting and scratching at herself. Then trying to climb through walls and get out the window. I tried to comfort her as it was 2 in the morning and I didn’t know what was wrong. This morning I noticed that a patch of hair where I put the medicine is gone. I gave her a bath and she is resting now, I am scared, but she is calm now. My 14 yr old cat is fine, but I will not dose her again.

  21. I have two rescue cats,I only had i dose left of frontline so the younger cat received the Hartz. She had an immediate reaction, started to hide and act scared. I did give her a bath with Dawn. She seems to be a little better this afternoon. She seems to be a little less scared than she was and I am trying to stay close to her. Hartz should be censured for this and Wal-Mart should be censured for using this product. I will be broken hearted if my kitty would die. No one should be able to sell or produce such a product. I am praying that my Unique will recover I am 91 yrs. old and these pets are my joy.

  22. I used Hartz on my cat years ago. She suffered similar symptoms and continues to do so years later. After the application she has obvious nervous issues. She incessantly cleans herself in one spot until she is bald. She has bouts of sickness about twice a year and we cannot attribute it to anything in our home. This all began with the Hartz flea drops application.

  23. I just bought 3 packs of hartz at walmart , spur of the moment , to help my cats not harm them . I have never used this product before . I applied this on 2 of my cats . Then Let them outside . About 15 minutes after application i was in my backyard aand seen both my cats running towards me . I noticed the one cat had his tongue out a was breathing heavily . As she approached me i could hear how she was struggling to breath and she began to oanick and was trying to hide . I immediately picked her up ran in the house with her and assumed it uad to be from the hartz medicine . I ended up bathing her 3 x before the side effects calmed . During all this i forgot about the other cat so i ran outside to find him laying on his side in the yard not moving . Hence he is a kitten and very active . So i ran him inside and bathed him x 3 as well . Im appauled that this product is even being sold . I will never ever buy hartz products again and i will make sure that no one else does either . I cant believe how dangerous this product is especially after reading all your posts . Its extremely sad that so many cats had to suffer at hartz exspense just so they can make a buck . Both my cats are ok right now as i will continue to keep an eye on them . What kills me most is if i hadnt noticed this or had not been home my poor cats probably would have died and that would be devastating not only for them but also for the pet owner as they are just like losing a child . I will make sure to report this to epa and please never put hartz on your pets !!!

  24. Hartz Ultra Guard Flea & Tick collars poisoned my healthy cats. They died at the end of August 2018. I’m heartbroken and mad as heck! Hartz owes me $260 for the cremation of my kitties! Can’t believe this deadly product is still on the market!

  25. I cant believe just these post have been going on for 9 years now and Hartz and Walmart are still producing and selling this product thats killing our family members. I wish i had found this site before i treated 2 of my cats. One seems to be unaffected but the female is salivating profusely at times. Hard to say about her behavior because shes in heat and has been acting erratic. i will bath them after reading these post. Thank God her two 8 week old little one were too young to treat.

  26. Unbelievable! I have been taking care of a sweet stray cat who showed up to my home 7 months ago. I took a while for her to warm up to me, lets me pet her and stays by my side. Decided to get some flea stuff for her because she still goes out to use the bathroom, won’t use a litterbox at all. Within a few hours she looked spooked. Acting for nervous and started hiding. 3 days later and I’m still taking care of her. She is eating & drinking some, still lethargic and like she doesn’t recognize me. Its heartbreaking. I reported this to Hartz on Saturday night. Not that they are listening. I have a case number also. This should be pulled from the shelves. Hartz Ultra Guard Pro for Fleas. I’m so upset that they could happen and I feel helpless.
