I am SO HAPPY I came upon this web site. I had no idea that Hartz had such a reputation, I thought I had an isolated incident. I was contemplating purchasing Frontline or Hartz, actually I was looking up the active ingredients, and I am positive I will never buy Hartz again. A few months ago, I gave my 4 cats Hartz drops (I got the right one, with their weight, etc.). The next day, 3 of my cats hardly moved, they acted mad at me, while my 4th started having tremors. I couldn’t even believe that I had done that to my cats. Fortunately, the 3 cats recovered quickly…after a day or so, but the 4th cat had burn like wounds on her neck where it was applied, and she suffered tremors, unable to walk for 4 days. I called the vet, he helped me through it. I just thought it affected her more because she was older (8 yrs old), and I knew I would never give it to her again, but thanks to all of you and this web site, none of my animals will ever get it, nor will my friends. Thanks for saving my animals lives….
My 9 month old cat hangs out with my two dogs. Now that the weather is nice, the dogs spend most of the day outside. My cat kept scrambling for the door so that he could be out with his friends. (Originally, we thought he’d be an indoor cat). After running after him one too many times, I gave up and let him stay out with the dogs. However, I figured that since the dogs always get Frontline, The cat should too. The problem was that it was Memorial Day, and the vet was closed. My partner found some Hartz flea and tick drops at the store. “Look, it’s less than half the price of Frontline”. I put the drops on him aroung 10:30 am. At 9:00 pm my cat had tremors, couldn’t walk without falling, had extreme sensitivity to light, and was terrified of me and his best friends (the dogs). I called the Vet E.R, and explained the symptoms. They asked if there was any pesticide or rodent poison around. Negatrive. Then they asked if I had used any Hartz Flea medicine. Bingo! They told me to bring him in immediately. They kept him for 24 hours, giving him muscle relaxers, I.V. fluids, and Scouring him to help detoxify him. They said that these toxicity problems sometimes take 3 or 4 days. They advised me to call my usual vet in case he needed longer term care. Before I could even finish explaining the problem, my usual vet asked about Hartz Flea medicine. $446.00 later he seems fine. He’s back wrestling with the dogs and no additional care is needed. The E.R. vet said that I was lucky. Usually the bills to detox the cat is over $1,000.00 if it takes the full three days. I guess it really wasn’t less than half the price of Frontline. I hope the people at Hartz, who knowingly distribute this poison all get a dose for themselves.
My cat Mackenzie almost died from Hartz flea meds. I put the medication as told on her. Not long after that she had a severe reaction to the meds. It made her have tremours and she couldn’t walk. If she tried she fell over. Her heart was racing. I took her to the vet, told them what I gave her. My cat almost died that day! If I wouldn’t have taken her in as soon as I did, she would have died. She was in the hospital for days. We didn’t even know if she would make it or not. They were not sure if after they took her off support she would be okay or if the tremors would start again. Luckly I got her the care she needed and she made it. But they told me while I was there about the many pets that are brought in and dont make it. The people of Hartz should be damn ashamed of themselves for putting out this product. If I lost my baby I dont know what I would have done.
I bought the Hartz purple pink flea/tick collar for my adult cats on Thursday at a local Target. Upon returning from vacation on Monday, my two cats had lost all fur around their necks and had developed very large bloody hard tumor like places on the back of their necks where the collar?s presides.
I could not find where these collars had been recalled but they should be.
Please no not use Hartz ear mite medication. My dear sweet Twinkles is dying beacuse of it. Twinkles had ear mites. I used the medication in one ear to clean it. She ended up getting an ear infection. She has been on medication from the Vet. But she is older and she is not eating. Please prayer for her. I can’t stand the thought of losing her.
I work at a vet clinic. Every summer we get a countless stream of flea toxicity in cats (and dogs) from Hartz products. Now while I greatly dislike Hartz and all that they do, people need to start realizing exactly what they’re putting on the animals they live with. Hartz, like all flea products, is a pesticide. It’s also a very cheap pesticide. You certainly get what you pay for. Hartz makes a toxic product, this is no surprise. Look up the chemical compounds in it…it’s not exactly something you want to be bathing in. The same goes for any flea products. So, in short..get Hartz off the shelves and be very suspicious of ALL flea products. Consider natural solutions to controlling fleas. Not everything is foolproof of course, but a healthier cat or dog in the long run is definitely worth it. Keep in mind-these products are also toxic to YOU! Wear GLOVES when messing around with it!
AFTER FINDING A TICK ON OUR 5 YEAR OLD MIXED BREED BORDER COLLIE, WE APPLIED THE HARTZ FLEA AND TICK DROPS AS DIRECTED YESTERDAY EVENING. WE NOTICED HIM DRINKING LOTS OF WATER THIS MORNING, BUT DIDN’T THINK ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THEN WE NOTICED THAT HE HAD DIARHEA AND TRIED TO MAKE HIM AS COMFORTABLE AS POSSIBLE WHILE WE WORKED IN THE YARD. HE CONTINUED TO BE LETHARGIC THROUGHOUT THE MORNING AND EARLY AFTERNOON, BUT WE DIDN’T DECIDE TO DRIVE HIM TO THE EMERGENCY VET UNTIL HE STOOD TO WALK AND COULDN’T. 5 MINUTES INTO OUR TRIP, OUR LOVING PET RALPHIE DIED….. HEALTHY, ATHLETIC, AND AFFECTIONATE, AND THE MEDICINE WE APPLIED TO HELP HIM IS TO BLAME FOR HIS DEATH….THERE’S SIMPLY NO OTHER EXPLANATION. WE CAN ONLY TAKE SOLACE IN THE FACT THAT SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT SAVING A FEW DOLLARS BY USING THIS IRRESPONSIBLE PRODUCT WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE POISONING THEIR BELOVED PET WITH THE HARTZ PROCUCT. BURYING HIM WAS THE HARDEST THING WE’VE EVER HAD TO DO.
After applying Hartz UltraGuard plus drops to my cat’s neck, she lost all of the fur under her collar and now has a ring of red, irritated and itchy skin around her neck. The vet says that chances are the fur will not grow back because the chemicals damage the hair follicals. Four days later, she doesn’t seem to be in pain or have any other side effects.
If Hartz considers this an improvment over their previous products, they are dillusional. What sort of sick people are allowing this to continue?
IT WAS ONE YEAR AGO TODAY THAT I LOST MY KITTEN L.O.R. TO HARTZ FLEA & TICK DROPS. IT WAS VERY HARD TO GET OVER A DEATH I CAUSED BY BEING CHEAP AND USING OVER THE COUNTER DROPS. AFTER MUCH THINKING I DECIDED TO GET A COMPANION FOR MY OTHER CAT “GOLLUM”. IN JULY I FOUND A BEAUTIFUL KITTEN I CALLED GIMLI FOR ADOPTION. HE IS A REGISTERED PERSIAN. WE ARE ALL DOING WELL BUT I CONTINUE TO WARN ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN ABOUT THE DANGERS OF USING ANY HARTZ PRODUCTS. I DON’T BUY OR USE ANYTHING MANUFACTORED BY HARTZ AND NEVER WILL AGAIN. PLEASE WARN YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE DANGERS LURKING IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD STORES UNDER THE HARTZ NAME. I DON’T EVEN BUY THEIR: BRUSHES, COLLARS, TOYS ETC.
I recently purchased an 8mo. old kitten from the humane society. Her name is kitkat & she is GORGEOUS!! The humane society administred the product ‘advantage’ before leaving the facility & kitkat had no problems what so ever. When it came time to re-treat her I purchased Hartz flea & tick for her weight size etc. For whatever reason after administering it I decided to stay up w/ her a few hrs to observe her for bad reactions, at that point she was not displaying any problems. Several hrs later I went to bed & to my horror when i awoke (just SIX hrs later) a wildly twitching/convulsing horrid looking kitten was skulking around the walls. My heart dropped into my stomach as i observered her while reading the packaging, which said to bath kitten & rinse profusely. While preparing the bath I got on the phone w/ Hartz to find out any additional help they could provide- mainly i was told, like pkg said to bath her etc & if not better w/in 1 hr take her to the VET!!
Without a doubt this experience was one of the most horrific I have had in dealing w/ my pets & gratefully the bath did help although not %100. kitkat got better quickly as day progressed. Her owner however was sick w/ fear & anger for days at the thought that I may have lost her, which would have been intolerable.
