Hartz Ultra Guard Flea and Tick Drops

Hartz Tick Drops… if applied to your pet…

Wash them off your animal IMMEDIATLEY ! Take that product back to walmart and demand your money back.

My Dog got a severe bleeding nose less then 15 mins of applying a 30lb one month dose. My dog is 100lb King Doberman, he went into convulsions, and seemed dissoriented, we rushed him into the shower, used dawn dishsoap on him, and scrubbed him all over. He seems to be doing better now, that stuff is pure poison!

The blood coming out of his nose was very liquidy, almost like it was half blood half water. And very very Red in color. Nothing like this has every happened to my dog before. I’d rather pull ticks off him with tweazers then have him die from poison.

3 Dogs + 1 Cat with Reactions (1 month later still seeing effects)

Thank you for your site!  I had no idea of how something so easy to buy at the store could cause so much heartache and pain.

I was at Neighborhood Walmart trying to get ready for July 4th holiday.  I was planning to take my 7 y/o child and 3 dogs to the lake house for 5 days to spend time with my father and his 2 dogs on his new boat.  That didn’t happen…

I periodically have bought flea stuff from PetsMart Banfield in the past.  They close at 7pm and they want to have seen all animals in question recently and run worm tests, etc.  I have spent several hundred dollars in the past year at the vet for unrelated incidences and thought I would just try getting something at the store – my reasons had to do with price, but more with convenience.  With the holiday weekend stress and trying to find time to get them to the vet and pickup medication before PetsMart closed was going to be very difficult.  I was also trying to STOP a flea infestation at home, plus didn’t want them to pick up fleas or ticks from being at the cabin for 5 days.

I bought Hartz Ultra Guard Plus for dogs and Hartz Ultra Guard Pro for cats.  I spent 30 minutes at Walmart comparing ingredients and finally deciding on these two products.

My pets include:

1. Male Black Lab Mix, 2 y/o, 60 lb (from local rescue group)

2. Female Beagle/Shar Pei Mix, 13 y/o, 20 lb (saved from abandoned house in dead of winter 8 years ago)

3. Female Brindle Greyhound Mix, 10 y/o, 45 lb (from local rescue group)

4. Male Gray Tabby Cat, 7 y/o, 5 lb (rescued from vet after being locked in a crate for 3 years)

Because my child was staying with my parents  for the holiday since I had to work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, I put the stuff on all the animals Monday night (July 1st) so that there would be no chance of her getting it on her.

I gave all the dogs Butcher Bones to keep them busy while I went to work Tuesday.  Tuesday night, my 2 y/o Black Lab was acting odd, but I just disregarded it.  He was acting nervous and a little wobbly .  I thought he was just being silly or stressing out because my child (who he protects to no end) had been gone for 2 days.

I fed them their normal wet food at 6 pm Tuesday night.  At 4AM, the Black Lab vomited.  Luckily I was awake.  I immediately cleaned it up and noticed NONE of the canned food pieces had been broken down.  It looked like it had just come out of the can.  (SORRY for the description, but after 10 hours, food should have begun being digested).  Again, I didn’t consider it being the Hartz medicine…I thought he had an obstruction from the Butcher Bones I had given them that morning.

I took him to the vet (Wednesday, July 3rd) and told them the only thing it could possibly be was an obstruction and to go ahead and do surgery if need be.  By 5pm, I hadn’t heard anything from my vet and stopped by on my way home.  They hadn’t done any x-rays and wasn’t keen on the obstruction idea.  I was suppose to be packing up the car and heading to the lake.  Why hadn’t they concluded anything after 9 hours?  Thank goodness they didn’t listen to me!  The vet was in another emergency surgery and the tech said, he’s lethargic, vomiting, and has explosive diarrhea.  She asked if I could come back  after the vet was finished in surgery.

My boyfriend says, “it sounds like Parvo.”  WHAT? That’s insane!  They had their vaccines in February!  I went home to rest until the vet called. Then it dawned on me…”the flea and tick medicine!!!”  That’s when I found your site…THANK GOD!  I read 2 other stories and knew that’s what it was.  As I called the vet to tell her, I found the Butcher Bone on the porch so I knew it couldn’t be an obstruction.

The story isn’t over…I decide to cancel my plans for the lake.  I didn’t want 3 dogs to be in a car for an hour if they weren’t feeling well.  I decided to take my Black Lab home Wednesday night.  I couldn’t bear the thought of him being stuck at the vet office on the night of July 4th with the fireworks going off…he’d been through enough.  The vet’s office had already washed his back that morning because they saw a shiny strip down his back.  When I brought him home, I decided to bathe him again.  This 2 y/o dog normally digs his nails in and freaks out when its bath time, but not today.  I didn’t want to cause him stress and led him to the bathroom.  He voluntarily got in the tub on his own! I guess he was telling me to wash this poison off of him.  My vet explained that I was lucky.  There are 2 kinds of reactions, digestive and neurological.  Looks like my lab only had the digestive and would be okay after a few days.  The neurological kind normally leads to death.

The morning of July 4th, I have to make an emergency call to my vet.  My 20 lb Beagle/Shar Pei mix had thrown up bloody mucous 3 times in 10 minutes around 9AM.  Then I notice my 45 lb Greyhound mix is itching non-stop and giving herself whelps! Then I notice the Grey Tabby has lost all the hair on his back where I had put cat specific Hartz medicine and he is twitching every few seconds.  I am getting ready to have a meltdown!

I kept a close eye on them.  My beagle was getting the last of the poison out of her system.  The cat was twitching because the “feeling” from having missing hair along his spine.  They all got bland diets and lots of love for the next few days. (Greyhound got Benadryl to help with allergic reaction).

Over the past month, I have pulled several ticks off of the Black Lab.

One month later…THE FREAKING POISON DIDN’T EVEN KILL ANY FLEAS OR TICKS.  ALL MY ANIMALS ARE FLEA INFESTED AGAIN! IN FACT, LAB HAS EARMITES; GREYHOUND HAS A YEAST INFECTION IN HER EARS.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THIS TO YOUR ANIMALS!

No time saved, money or convenience is worth watching your pets suffer.

I’ll keep the fleas…Thank you!  Currently trying alternatives, like food grade Diatomaceous Earth, but its not working either.

However, I will never purchase another Hartz product again, including toys, treats, etc.

TELL EVERYONE!  HARTZ HARMS YOUR PETS…NOT PESTS!

Great news investigation!  However, in 2009 they reported the EPA is investigating these harmful medications.  It is now 2013, and these poisons are still widely available in most major store chains!  http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Pet_Product_Investigation_Los_Angeles.html

“The products we investigated are flea and tick shampoos and drops sold by major companies like Sergeant’s, Bio Spot, and Hartz,” the article reads. ”They all contain the same type of pesticide, called pyrethrins or the synthetic versions known as pyrethroids. These are the same pesticides in household products like ‘Raid,’ used to kill bugs around your home.”

Hartz Flea Shampoo Killed my 3 Kittens

This was way back in 1989 but the emotional trauma of what I suffered watching my 3 kittens die is still very much with me. I had a female cat that I rescued from outside my home one winter, she gave birth to three kittens, adorable little tabbies. We fell in-love instantly and named them. There was Cricket, Buddy & Peanut. When they turned 16 weeks old I felt they were old enough to bathe in a flea shampoo to rid them of the fleas momma cat has passed on to them at birth. And according to HARTZ’S FLEA SHAMPOO instructions they only had to be at least 12 weeks old for their product to be safely used. So being that these kittens were 16 weeks old I felt safe in using it. BIG MISTAKE! I applied the shampoo as instructed and within MINUTES, ALL THREE STARTED RUNNING IN CIRCLES AND MEWING URGENTLY WITH A FRIGHTENED LOOK ON THEIR FACES. Soon after Cricket started foaming at her little mouth and gasping for air, Buddy started having foam come out his NOSE and MOUTH, Peanut grew very weak and listless and flopped over like a dead fish and lay gasping for air mewing in silent cries. I rushed them to the sink and re-rinsed them over and over as they grew weaker in my hands. I would rinse one and pass it to my (then 9 years old) daughter to dry off and try to rub them back to life, while I rinsed the other and so on. Finally 10 minutes into the horrific ordeal I panicked and called the emergency number of a local vet who said that it sounded like they had been poisoned and were too far gone to do anything for them because by the time “they start foaming the poison has entered their blood stream and it’s too late to save them” quote, un-quote. The vet also suggested I keep rinsing them with clear water and maybe they might pull out of it but to prepare for the worst. I crying started begging him to come help me, I would pay him holiday pay and after hours pay to just come so these babies wouldn’t suffer as they were literally suffocating in this thick foam oozing from their noses and mouths. He apologized and said there was nothing he could do for them, to call animal control and maybe they could help me. I called animal control and the lady who said there was nothing they could do either still came over quickly because I told her that I wanted a witness to what we were seeing and what the kittens were suffering. She sat with me and we ALL cried as we held these tiny babies in our hands watching them grow more and more listless and cold, all the while making gasping mewing movements with their tiny mouths like fish out of water, silent screams for help and gasping to try to get air in their lungs to breathe. They lived for another 30 minutes. Suffering ungodly pain and torture as they suffocated to death in this poisonous foam. My daughter had nightmares for months afterwards and she and I both still cry at the memories of how these kittens suffered. I called Hartz the very next day-a Monday-and was told that they had never had any complaints before and that they would gladly send me a box to return the actual bottle of shampoo to them for inspection. I stated that without the bottle I would have no proof of what I had used and what if it disappeared or was mysteriously lost in the mail? They assured me this would not happen and they would insure that I was advised of every step that bottle made from arrival to the results of their testing. So I agreed and sent them the bottle. And waited for their call. It never came. I ended up (almost to the point of harassment) calling and calling them for days on end for three months and nothing. Finally almost 4 months later I was able to reach an actual Hartz person because I threatened to sue them, and was firmly told they had NO RECORD of my name, my calling, or ANY complaints from anyone and did I have the bottle to prove it was their product I had used. I hung up in frustration and have vowed to insure no other cats are EVER killed by Hartz products again and voice it to anyone willing to listen. HARTZ PRODUCTS KILL CATS! PERIOD. And Hartz is insensitive and could care less because they are protected by bylaws and wordy powerful attorneys who know how to manipulate the system to insure they are not held accountable. So the next best thing is to boycott their products until they’re removed from consumer markets. DON’T BUY HARTZ PRODUCTS. Please! Save yourselves the heartache my daughter and I still keenly feel to this day….and If you value your sanity and the lives of your cats DO NOT USE HARTZ PRODUCTS ON THEM EVER!!!

RAW NECK FROM FLEA COLLAR

My cat is almost 16 years old now, still with the life of a 4 year old. She had fleas, so after about a month without the flea medicine from frontline, i bought her a flea collar because we had just had the house exterminated for fleas, to make sure they didnt come back for a while. (to stop having to pay for frontline). I buy a flea collar to keep remaining flea eggs from hatching and living on the cat, to reduce the risk of it happening again, and trying to save my mom money… BIG MISTAKE.
The flea collar only a couple weeks in made my cats neck raw on one side, covered in a giant scab about and inch in length and 3/4 of one in width. She also has a few other scabs around her neck area, but at first I thought it was from a fight with a cat that jumped over our fence and happened to land on my cat.
I looked up pictures of the side effects from the flea collar, and it looks like thats what could have happened if i let it stay on there for a few months like it said on the package. That’s disgusting. what if my cat of FIFTEEN AND A HALF YEARS since I was 3 died because she was poisoned by something that I THOUGHT was going to help her, but really I was poisoning her.

Death to early

We had 3 cats and 1 dog at our house and now we just have 1 cat and 1 dog. Our story is very sad and no one else needs to go through it.
Yesterday we noticed a flea on one of our russian blues, we went to buy some flea controll, Hartz was the brand we decided to purchase. We get home and put the flea controll on all of our animals. Later on in the evening we started to noticed that our 2 russian blues were acting strange. There body movements were jerky, the face was twiching, there meow was weak. Shortly after they both started to have seizurs. At this point we decided to put down the 2 cats. We could not watch them suffer anymore. It was a horrible experiance and no one should have to deal with this kind of loss.
If I would have research this product and found this site we would never bought it.
This product should be taken off the store shelves so no one else have to suffer the lose that we endured last night. Hartzs need to change there packaging to say it may cause death if used. Right now all it says is that there might be some sensitivity to the product. To me that says nothing about death or the side effects that it may cause. Only if we would have know maybe our loved ones would still be with us.

R.I.P       Tika and Carneilius. You will always be in our hearts.

This is ridiculous!

I cannot believe all these stories and poor people who have had traumatic experiences with their pets and this terrible brand. Thank god for this website!!! I had been buying frontline plus from my vet for Paisley. My mom told me to buy it at a store because it would be cheaper. Well they didn’t have any frontline and Paisley’s fleas are all gone but there might be some still in the apt so I decided to get her some Sergeant Silver flea and tick squeeze on. I put it on Paisley last night. She was napping in another room while I was doing homework. After a few hours she comes in acting strange.  She was walking very slowly and shaking all four legs like she had just stepped in a puddle of water.  So that’s what I thought had happened and went back to hw.  Less than an hour later I go to check on her and she is in the closet laying there barely able to stand up. She was walking so slowly now and had shaking in her legs. When I touched them or the back of her neck where the medicine was she would cry. Her personality was so different it reminded me of when she was coming off the anesthisia after getting spayed, like she was “drunk” and scared cause she didn’t know what was happening to her.  I googled sergeant silver’s flea medicine and this was the very first site that popped up. Obviously more people go on this website to complain about Hartz than to buy it or look at the products on their website. After skimming a couple stories I gave her a bath with dawn soap and water.  I scrubbed the back of her neck very good and washed everywhere else to make sure. That was a hassle since the last time I bathed her she was about half the size she is now! Then she was growling and crying (which she never does) when I dried her off like I was hurting her or she was just so sick she didn’t want to be bothered.  She was still pretty scared (and probably pissed)  for little while afterwards but she finally got up in bed and curled up never to me. When I woke up this morning she was still lethargic but her personality was back and no more shaking.  I went to class and came back to find her back to her normal self.  She played and played for hours and just laid down beside me for a nap 🙂 I’m outraged by all the victims (pets and owners) that have been scarred from this product. How can they keep this poison on the shelves with no warning to unsuspecting pet owners??? I am so pissed at this company something needs to be done to gets these dangerous chemicals from being sold.

Once again thank you so much for making this site and raising awareness. I am so grateful to have Paisley back to her normal funloving self 🙂

Hartz Flea and Tick Guard Gold almost killed my 3 dogs

After reading all of the other stories here, I feel fortunate that my dogs aren’t dead! I used this stuff on our three chiuhauhaus ( I don’t know how to spell it ) and I’m, our family is still really upset.

Our dogs started puking, trembles, involuntary jumps and kicks. They are also obviously hallucinating too. Biting at their toes and feet. Acting like they’re being attcked by fleas that don’t exist. Our oldest and smallest one 13yr old fmle, couldn’t stand up. We recognized association to the topical flea med and bathed them all again two and three times. Have had to lay with them almost constantly to comfort and calm them.

Luckily they kept eating and drinking.  Eventually resumed doing their business outside too. They are still far from normal more than 56 hours later. There should be a class action suit on this!

I truly fear my kids will never be the same again, ever!

Too many to remember

I don’t have a personal story, but I just wanted to say that I am an RVT and have worked in a clinic for 9 years, I have seen neurological, skin and behavior reactions to these cheap flea products, some have resulted in death and some in permanent damage. There have been too many to count, it’s a tragedy that these products are on the market and so easy to buy. Something must be done. This page is a great start.

Sergeants Gold flea and tick made my dog very sick.

We bought Sergeants flea and tick after noticing a flea on one of our three boxers a week ago.  We put this (medicine) on two of the three and after a few minutes they both were starting to to act a little sick,  We didn’t think a lot of it at the time and it was late so we went to bed.  The next morning was a nightmare!  Our youngest boxer (2 years old) was so sick that he couldn’t keep his balance, was drooling, and throwing up.  He couldn’t walk. was shaking.  I called the hotline from the box,, what a joke, this woman told me to cleanse my dog’s palate with soft dog food and peanut butter, yeah right! then she told me the reason my dog was shaking was this  ” dogs shake when they are excited or anxious”. She refused to tell me anything, and told me to have my vet call her..

after talking with my vet, here’s what we did,,

Force water/chicken broth to help flush out the poisons.  SCRUB YOUR DOG WITH DAWN (BLUE) DISH SOAP, it will help remove the poison from the dog’s fur and skin and will also kill fleas, do at least three times. as soon as we did this with ours he was better within a few minutes.

This “medicine” should be removed from the shelves, and the side effects should be listed on the box!!

Once ACTIVE Cat now sleeps 23/7, may be blind/deaf

Justice, our male short haired cat, born on THE September 11th, is now a different cat. This cat who was ALWAYS SO ACTIVE, now huddles in the corner in fear… from the day of his HARTZ treatment till now, 3 weeks later. I wondered why he did come when I called. There are often DAYS that go by when I don’t see him at all. He hides in the basement. I feed him (slight appitite), water, but he is a different cat. Sometimes he sits and just Meows when you are right next to him. I carried him to his food dish… he acts like his senses are messed up.  He twitched just a little that first day (my wife had given him his drops between his shoulders, and I was away on a trip).  She feels just horrible. We thought he would die. But, so far, no recurring twitching. But he has trouble walking, maneuvering, seeing, perhaps hearing.

This is SO VERY OBVIOUS that this relates to the Hartz product. There should be a class-action law suit. I just don’t know why they would continue to market this product. Somebody with deep pockets is going to sue them.  And it is not about the money for most people… it is about getting rid of a dangerous product.

Hartz: Please listen to these stories. Any one can make a mistake. But, take responsibility. Reformulate, retest, and do what is right.. in the mean-time, pull your product.
