I just want to help spread awareness to all of you folks that have used Hartz products. When it comes to flea and tick prevention, there’s too many owners that get over the counter products. Please don’t do this. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Hartz product or any other brand, even Frontline. Get it from your veterinarian. As a veterinary assistant I see at least one pet that’s been subject to these products every week, and the result varies with each of them. Some succumb to the toxicity of product and nearly die, others break out in hotspots all over their body, and still more come in completely infested with fleas. Get your preventative products from your vet. This is the only way to guarentee that it will work. If it doesn’t, the company will reimburse you, but only if you got it at a vet’s office. Even getting them from PetMeds and other such websites, though cheaper, does not guarentee it’s the product you think you purchased. It’s of dire importance to keep your pet on flea/tick preventative and heartworm preventative. Yes, it is expensive to do so, especially if you get it from your vet. But prevention is much cheaper than a cure. I am begging all owners out there to please take care of your pet. Fleas carry tapeworms, and can carry hemobartonella – the organism that causes cat scratch fever – and those parasites can cause serious harm or death to a pet. The same for ticks that carry Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Babesia – devastatig diseases to your pet. Heartworms are even more important to prevent. They’re transmitted by mosquitos, and one bite from a mosquito can infect your dog or cat, even if they always stay indoors (please remember that mosquitos can get inside, and fleas can be tracked in from your front yard). The treatmet is six months long for a dog, and the injections are arsenic based. Heartworms in cats can effect their lungs. Is it truly fair to let them suffer through something like that, because you wouldn’t get preventative from the vet? Products like those made by Hartz are detrimental to your pets because people assume it’s ok to use since it’s being sold in the store. Please, please, please don’t fall for this. Read these other stories and see what Hartz has done to pets because they falsley market their products. You have the right to know about your pet’s safety with these products, so talk to your veterinarian to get all the information you can. Love your pet, get in the know.
Written last night…
I used the spray twice but only left it on for a very short time,
just till my baby started shaking and I saw a rash forming. My Shihpoo’s skin was
“burning” it seemed similiar to a persons scalp burns when a perm is
left on too long. So both times I washed it off. The fleas were gone 1
day but then back then gone then back and only in batches less than 5.
So I just used a flea comb to rake the fleas up and kill them manually
between my nails. Tired of this and thinking we may have a bigger
problem I exchanged the spray for the drops at walmart. Thank goodness
they have a great return policy! Because I had no receipt. So many
told me the drops were better than the spray so I decided to give them
a try. People only recommended the “advantage” brand never another and
thinking all brands were the same I got hartz and put it on this
afternoon. I did see another rash, but didn’t think it was as bad so I
left it on about 10 hours!!! After 7 her heart was racing, and I did
think that strange…
Curious to see what reviews said about using the second dosage and
when or even if it worked I discovered this site, and all that I read
made sense because of the rash, so I bathed my baby instantly!! And I
am so worried I can’t sleep.
She’s curled up beside me in bed and i’m watching her for any unusual
signs 🙁 so far She’s just been breathing heavy sighs, like “stop
typing/clicking on your blackberry already, i’m trying to sleep!” haha
So here’s to hoping its not too far into her bloodstream!!!
And as soon as I can i’m fricken takin that garbage (the other 2
doses) BACK and THIS time i’m getting a gift card!!! Or cash,
whichever they want to give me! 😛 and I will bring a print off of
consumer reviews to let them know i’m not the only one and the stuff
is junk and should be taken off the shelf.
Oh hold on! My baby just made choking sounds!!! Like she threw up in
her mouth 🙁 I better get off my phone and let her sleep! Or she could
Goodnight from 2 year old Panda the Shihpoo and her Mommy! 🙂
The next morning…
Well she seems to be ok this morning, the rash is gone, just dry skin from the baths remains and her scratching…but so far all is well, thankfully!
On Friday night (10/28/2010) I was giving my two dogs and my cat their monthly flea treatments. I woke up on Saturday morning (the 29th) and my cat was laying by my front door, convulsing, biting through his tongue, and completely unresponsive. My two year old went up to my cat, Peanut, and began to pet him and trying to wake him up, while my husband ran and grabbed a blanket and I called the Vet. We had a friend over that morning and he agreed to watch our son while we rushed our cat to the Vet. The first question they asked was, “Did you give him a Hartz flea treatment?” I replied yes and they began to bathe him in Dawn dish soap, in attempts to remove as much of the product as possible. They put my husband and I in a room while they began trying to help Peanut. They came in and told us that there was somethings we could try, however they had a cat in the previous week that was in a similar condition. The cat was not nearly as bad as Peanut (they said it was the worst seizing they had ever seen) and the other cat took over four days just to get the seizing to stop. They said we could try it, but they did not think it would work, and that the best thing to do was to humanely euthanize our cat. I looked at my husband, and we decided to go through with it. It would not have been fair to put Peanut through all of that, when the results would more than likely kill him. I sat there, petting him head and apologizing to him, but I could tell that inside he was already gone. After we left I went home and attempted to explain to my son how Peanut wasn’t going to be coming home (his first question when we walked in was, “Where cat go?”). I then went out into the room where we found him. I could plainly see the trail of blood that I had missed in the panic of the morning. From where he first bit his tongue, to the struggle he made to my front door, the span of which was about five feet. I began crying and my husband had to come take me away from the room. This morning (11/01/2010) I woke up and immediately called Hartz to complain. They told me that since my doctor did not do the blood work, it was just my veterinarians speculation of what may have killed him. I couldn’t believe it, considering that the vet’s are trained in the area and it is something she has seen before from Hartz flea treatments. I found this site and decided to share my story, because I do not want others to go through what my family and I did.
I don’t have a personal story, but I just wanted to say that I am an RVT and have worked in a clinic for 9 years, I have seen neurological, skin and behavior reactions to these cheap flea products, some have resulted in death and some in permanent damage. There have been too many to count, it’s a tragedy that these products are on the market and so easy to buy. Something must be done. This page is a great start.
My girlfriend decided to put his 2 month treatment on my dog Kota, A Shiba Inu. We have put the medication on him before and he never had a reaction. Boy was this some harsh stuff… About 12 hours after applying the medication he started to act like it was burning him. Panting Heavily, Scratching at it, Shaking like he was having a seizure, and when he started to walk it was like something bit him and he would let out a wild screech. I called the number on the back of the box and they told me to get it off with dawn soap 2 washes. I did that and we rushed him to the vet afterwards because he was too lethargic and was still having seizures. The vet gave him benadyrl and some pain medication to help him rest and we took him home last night. He has been going crazy all day. They say that this stuff can cause kidney failure and death. So whatever you do watch your dog if this happens to you. Don’t allow him to eat protein and make sure he pees and drinks lots of fluids. Proteins can’t be excreted from the kidneys under renal failure and can cause your dog to go crazy because it breaks down into Urea and is toxic. This stuff is bad news. Kota is like my child and if something happened to one of my kids I would litterally kill the people who make this. Still thinking about it. I will call and get a refund or there will be a law suit at hand. I have already contacted my lawyer.
For future information do not EVER give a flea and tick medication that has pyridine in it. It is a poison used in sprays to kill cockroaches and insects. It is a very lethal insect killer.
I have learned my lesson I pray for the people who have lost their dogs or have had any damage from this product. It must be taken off the shelves
It’s unbelievable that this medicine has not been pulled off the shelves after all the harm it’s caused to poor dogs/cats and their owners!!!
Yesterday at this time I unknowingly put a toxic poison on my cat that I bought at Target. Little did I know when I put Hartz 3 in 1 flea and tic medicine on my cat that it would almost kill her.
My cat had a lot od shedding and my vet recommended using some Advantage or Frontline flea products, that it may be from fleas. I had some advantage, but it was for cats over 10 pounds and she was 8. So, I used the Hartz 3 in 1 that I also had on hand from a long time ago. Kiki started instantly twitching her back muscles. i thought she just didn’t like the feel of the liquid on her back. Within an hour she was a mess. Tremors, twitching, eratic behavior. She could sit still for a minute, even though I knew she wanted too. I washed off some of the product with a wash cloth. This morning she was still acting the same with twitching and weird behavior.
Thank goodness for the internet…I Googled, “flea medicine, bad reaction” and was shocked what came up. I instantly called the vet. They sent me to the emergency hospital. Within seconds of walking in the door, they wisked away my kitty. The gave her muscle relaxers, an IV and some charcoal thing to help it pass through her system. They just called and said she is doing much better. She is going to be ok. I cry for all of the people that lost their pets. This website and others are great, once people start investigating their pets bad reactions, but we have to get these products off the shelves, and we need to educate people of the true dangers.
If you are outraged like me, take a few steps this minute to get the ball rolling in your area.
I have contacted 3 local news stations in SF today and will continue to contact national ones as well: Dateline, Oprah, CNN, etc. Do the same.
Let your vet know to get the word out. My vet said two to use, in the next breath, he should of gave me a verbal warning about the over the counters. I am writing him a letter with my wishes.
Email every person in your inbox, to give the warning and spread the word.
Contact Hartz Medical Hotline 888-875-1706 your report goes to the EPA as well and the info goes on record officially. It is a 3rd party hot line, it was helpful. They also can get your a reimbursement for vet bills(I will let you know how that goes!)
Contact WalMart and ask them to take it off of their shelves. If this was affecting children it would be gone. WalMart is their biggest distributer.
Take a stand right now. My prayers go out to all of the animals and owners that were not lucky enough to catch it in time.
On Sept 15,2008 I treated My cat with Hartz Flea drops. Today now thw 16th we arrived home to find our cat outside shaking. We brought her in the house as it was cold out side. My wife noticed something was wrong with the cat.
We thought she might have gotten into some garbage or ate a mouse or rat that was poisined. We then remembered we treated her with the drops. She went into a violent siezure and was convulsing harshly. I found the package and immediatley looked up the information on permethrin.
I called hartz and when I did I got a machine that asked me to press 1 for customer service and 2 for emergency help. I pressed option 2 only to get a answering machine that said all agents were busy and to call back later and it hung up. I called back immediatley and pressed option 1 talked to a rep who transfered me to a emergency care consultant for hartz. He was the most un caring person in the world I was asking if there was any combatant for the permethrin he said ” No sir there is nothing to combat it” and then he sat on the line and was going to leave it at that. Then I asked him how long it was going to be in her system and he said well it can be up to 72 hours. He did not offer and help nor support to me. I told the basterds this was not over and they would be hearing from me and a lawyer.
I ask you to please contact me at DerekRStewart@yahoo.com with the information of your horror story and that you provide me with your name and a address and telephone number where yoyu can be reached by a attorney of law and begin a class action suit against this company for the lack of care and knowledge about this deadly flea medication. Your animal can die from this just being around another animal treated with this cocktail of death.
I am in tears for all of you that have suffered through this. And one more thing there is no documented studies on how to treat this overdose. But do not let your vet use charcoal as this is topical and not ingested this will result in dehydration of your animal and put them in even more danger. Bath your animal with soap 3 times to ensure you have got all of it off and rinse with alot of luke warm water hot water will open the skins pores so do not use HOT water.
This company seems to have no concern or care what they are doing lets put them in thier place and make them care. This medication is highly toxic and needs to be looked into further before more animals die.

Justice, our male short haired cat, born on THE September 11th, is now a different cat. This cat who was ALWAYS SO ACTIVE, now huddles in the corner in fear… from the day of his HARTZ treatment till now, 3 weeks later. I wondered why he did come when I called. There are often DAYS that go by when I don’t see him at all. He hides in the basement. I feed him (slight appitite), water, but he is a different cat. Sometimes he sits and just Meows when you are right next to him. I carried him to his food dish… he acts like his senses are messed up. He twitched just a little that first day (my wife had given him his drops between his shoulders, and I was away on a trip). She feels just horrible. We thought he would die. But, so far, no recurring twitching. But he has trouble walking, maneuvering, seeing, perhaps hearing.
This is SO VERY OBVIOUS that this relates to the Hartz product. There should be a class-action law suit. I just don’t know why they would continue to market this product. Somebody with deep pockets is going to sue them. And it is not about the money for most people… it is about getting rid of a dangerous product.
Hartz: Please listen to these stories. Any one can make a mistake. But, take responsibility. Reformulate, retest, and do what is right.. in the mean-time, pull your product.
I can’t believe how ignorant I was in the fact I didn’t research Hartz InControl Flea and Tick Drops when I purchased them for my cat for the upcoming flea season. I mean… you see Hartz and assume you are buying a reputable product to protect your animal. I used InControl Flea and Tick Drops on my cat and within hours she was shaking and tremoring as if she was in the beginning stages of a seizure. I IMMEDIATELY called the number on the back of the box and though their Eastern Standard TIme Hours are 9 to 5 their “Hartz Mountain” offices were CLOSED and though it was 10am EST their soulless recording echoed in my ear to call them back during their regular business hours from 9am to 5pm EST. Not to mention this line hangs up on you after choosing this number 2 phone option for “POISON EMERGENCY!”
After taking my cat to the emergency vet and providing her with fluids and muscle relaxers to stop her convulsing my veterinarian immediately shook her head, sighing when I said “Hartz” She immediately knew how awful their products were and the horrible consequences cats and dogs have suffered from them. She told me she has had too many case to even count!
Upon arriving home with my cat, I researched what I had unwittingly subjected my beloved animal to and felt so irresponsible and sickened I had to post this story to try and raise awareness of this company and their pet killing products in hopes other mislead pet owners don’t end up in the same position as me, watching their cat or dog suffer like this. This company does NOT care about animals and ADMITS to using ingredients that cause irreparable liver damage and BLEEDING OF THE EYES! Even now at this very moment I am agonizing, wondering if my cat will pull through this. She is 13 years old and if anything this product has certainly shortened her lifespan by forcing her organs to work in overdrive to try and force this poisonous product out of her system! I know in my heart I will always feel responsible for putting her through this, but in the end it is THE HARTZ COMPANY WHO IS RESPONSIBLE TO MANUFACTURING A LETHAL PET PRODUCT!
