Why? Because not enough people do anything about it

First off I want to offer my sympathies to all who have lost animals  due  to flea and tick  products. It’s a very hard thing to deal with  emotionally. You do something to try  to help your pet and it causes injury and all  to often  death. How do you  cope  with it? We all  find different  ways to deal with the loss and  time will help what you are  feeling. There are no magic  words to make you feel better or bring your pets back. What you can do is to turn  your grief and anger into action.

I see  so many of you asking why is this stuff still being  sold. Why isn’t there a lawsuit. I’d be  alot more encouraged if I saw a few how can  I help or what can I do about this instead of why’s.

By action I mean go to the, “Need Help” page. You will find all the info required to make your voice heard. Contact  all the places  listed there. File  complaints with them. Write  lettes if they  don’t take  complaints. Trust me you have to do this .  If everyone who had ever had a pet hurt of  killed did this maybe we would be  a lot closer to getting this stuff off the  shelves.

I have been involved  in this  fight since 2001. Myself and another person who’s animals were also hurt penned the  first petition and sent it in. Didn’t  do much good. I was also in the  first lawsuit. That  ended when Hartz bullied the person who started it  Settled out of  court ,you  could get the  cost of the product and any vet costs. You had to sign their multi paged agreement saying  that you would never say anything bad about Hartz. No I didn’t sign it.

Instead I got a news station to do a piece on Hartz. I got lucky and the news station  told Hartz they were not pulling the piece  when Hartz  threatened  legal action, something Hartz is famous  for.

I saw the EPA ask Hartz  to  relable their  products with a stronger warning and more specific direction. Apparently Hartz had  told the EPA that Americans were using  the dog  product on cats in most of the complaints. I don’t know about you but cat and dog were some of the  first words I learned to read in  school.

That of course didn’t  do much good  so the EPA got Hartz to actually pull 2 products. They gave them a year to pull the products. That year  cost a lot of animals their  lives. Then the EPA  allowed Hartz  to replace  those products  LOL  now   the packages say 99% inert ingriedants. They also let Hartz get away with doing their own testing of the products.

The last big event was an online conference with the EPA, Hartz,  other makers of similar  products and  a few others . No they didn’t pull anymore Hartz products. They put out a warning  that I can no longer find on the EPA’s web site.

The best thing I have seen was an individual at  long last actually took hartz to court and won. The was a big  first. despite many many  people trying to do it before and Hartz  counter  suing  all of them for more money  than  most of us make in 2 years a man in Texas did win. Doesn’t sound  like much but you wouldn’t believe me if I told  you  how low I have seen Hartz go

I don’t know if we can ever get Hartz and such off the shelves, I’m thinking probably not because they make so much money of cheap  flea products. You can do something that will help. You can tell every person  you know and meet not to use these  products. Warn them they  could very  easily cause serious injuury  or kill their animals. If you see someone in a store looking at tthese  products  start up a conversation. Say, ” Excuse me but I used that product and it killed my cat or  dog or it hurt them It caused burns to their  necks. It cost me X amount of  dollars  in Vet  bills to save them  or to try to save them. I just wanted you to know because  so many animals  have died I wouldn’t want  yours to be hurt”.  “I just wish  someone had  told me about them before I used them.” Tell them  about this web site  if they look  like they don’t believe you. All they need to do is read a few of the thousands of pages here .  If you  do this you may very well save an animals life and it doesn’t  cost you a cent to do.

If you want posters  or  flyer’s we can send you one  to make  copy’s of  to hand  out. I’ll even  go as far as to work up special  flyers if you want something on it they don’t have If  you have a web site or a friend with one  put a  link to this site on it. Tell your stories on Facebook. Tweet out warnings and keep doing it. Don’t just do it once make a habit of it. If your writing the  EPA, make a  dozen  copy’s and  send them 1 a week

Just do something  don’t let what has happened to you and your animals  slide. It will make you feel better and it will help the  cause.

 Getting off my soap box!

Do something to help get the word out about Hartz. summer  is coming and more cats and dogs are going to be hurt or die from products like Hartz. Getting the  word out about how dangerous Hartz is , is a good start to helping keep animals safe.

Death to early

We had 3 cats and 1 dog at our house and now we just have 1 cat and 1 dog. Our story is very sad and no one else needs to go through it.
Yesterday we noticed a flea on one of our russian blues, we went to buy some flea controll, Hartz was the brand we decided to purchase. We get home and put the flea controll on all of our animals. Later on in the evening we started to noticed that our 2 russian blues were acting strange. There body movements were jerky, the face was twiching, there meow was weak. Shortly after they both started to have seizurs. At this point we decided to put down the 2 cats. We could not watch them suffer anymore. It was a horrible experiance and no one should have to deal with this kind of loss.
If I would have research this product and found this site we would never bought it.
This product should be taken off the store shelves so no one else have to suffer the lose that we endured last night. Hartzs need to change there packaging to say it may cause death if used. Right now all it says is that there might be some sensitivity to the product. To me that says nothing about death or the side effects that it may cause. Only if we would have know maybe our loved ones would still be with us.

R.I.P       Tika and Carneilius. You will always be in our hearts.

Too many to remember

I don’t have a personal story, but I just wanted to say that I am an RVT and have worked in a clinic for 9 years, I have seen neurological, skin and behavior reactions to these cheap flea products, some have resulted in death and some in permanent damage. There have been too many to count, it’s a tragedy that these products are on the market and so easy to buy. Something must be done. This page is a great start.

The America consumer spends half a billion dollars annually  on products that kill fleas. Many of these products are not only unsafe for animals but also many have toxic effects on humans. The EPA, registers most of these products as safe pestcides. They are not safe.

On 02/11/01 I became brutally aware of Hartz flea products after using Hartz flea and tick drops on stray cat I had taken in. That day and the next few will forever stand out in my mind. I joking refer to that time as my ‘Hartz awakening’. I have fought to get Hartz flea products of shelves ever since.

I have “My story”, just as every victim of Hartz or other over counter flea product victim does. The stories only vary in the degree of sorrow, be it from the injuries or deaths these products have caused and the amount of money paid to save or try to safe an animal after their use. I have read thousands of them. Sometimes I cry but all the time I get angry. How dare this still be happening. How dare the EPA or other government entity not stop this. The reason is all to simple, GREED.

What you will be reading below is all factual and I hope it will cause you to help put a stop to this before more animals suffer needless harm and death.
I urge you to take action. File complaints, write letters, emails and make calls.   Stay angry about this and do something. WE all must come together to put a stop to this. You must take the time to file complanits,  write letters and  make calls. And perhaps the most important thing of all is to tell people. Tell everyone you know. Tell people you see at the  store looking at these flea products. Get the word out. By doing this you may actually help save an animal from injury and /or death.  Become as animal advocate, especially if you have  your own story.

Hartz has been producing dangerous flea products since 1987. At that time Blockade, was pulled off store shelves after the company admitted that it had caused 366 animal deaths and 2,700 injuries, as well as 56 human injuries

What follows are some high points of the past ten years regarding Hartz.

1999 WFMY News http://www.wfmynews2.com/2wk/2wk.asp?ID=1201
Regarding harm to humans by Hartz products, it turns out that Hartz settled out of court  for a girl’s death from their flea shampoo.

Campbell v. The Hartz Mountain Corporation, Colorado Federal District Court, Case No. 98-WY-1171-WD
The Campbell’s attorneys: http://www.zodrow.com/main/cases/env.htm

The EPA orders Hartz to recall their Flea and Tick Drops for re -labeling after thousands of complaints about injuries and deaths attriubted to the products.
In 2003 a case action was filed against Hartz Mountian. It was settled out of court on July of that year. The stipulations regarding settlements required that the orginal product or packaging, the sales reciept, Vet bills and a letter from the Vet stating that the cause for the treatment was reqiured directly from the use of the product must be sent in to file a claim. Claims would not be paid if the animals had  died unless an autopsy had  been  preformed whiich indicated the use of the product was the cause of death. In addition  the  person filing the claim was required to sign a mulit paged do not disclose and information about Hartz agreement. The settlement pay outs were limited to the cost of the product and Vet  bills. Nothing for injury or loss of the animal.
 * I was involved in the class action and  and refused to settle and give up the right to speak out about Hartz.

ASPCA CASE NUMBER from May 31, 2004 is case # 40034238

In August of 2004 we know that Hartz had recieved at least 58074 complaints. As this number was given to a person filing a complaint.

Those number are from 2004  Can you dare to imagine what the actual numbers are today? Horrifying thought isn’t it.

By the way these companies are awesome in their ability to get the EPA to believe that the reasons for most of these complaints are due to the American consumer being to stupid to (A) Buy the correct product for thier pet. (B) Read and follow the instructions. That was Hartz response back then and the EPA bought into it.
6/18/04 Sumitomo buys Hartz Mountain for $365 million

6/3/05 EPA and Hartz agree to recall, relabel and  stop  the sale of Hartz Fle and Tick Drops for cats and kittens, on 3/06. At that time they will put a new product on the  market to replace their flea and tick drops for cat.
The Latest  News Articles –

EPA Investigates Hundreds of Flea, Tick Products. States that The Environmental Protection Agency is “intensifying its evaluation” of hundreds of spot-on flea and tick products, which contain pesticides and may have accounted for thousands of pet injuries and deaths in the past two years.

A “significant increase” in the number of reports prompted the EPA to investigate the individual commercial products and their major manufacturers, including Hartz Mountain Corp., Central Life Sciences and Bayer AG, according to EPA spokesman Dale Kemery.

The agency is not, however, recommending or requiring any companies to recall their products.

Kemery says the EPA is not targeting specific companies — just the products that may have contributed to the 44,263 incident reports the EPA received in 2008. Approximately 1,200 of those reports accounted for animal deaths.

The numbers mark a sharp increase from the approximate 28,000 incidents pet owners reported in 2007.

“There has been this increase and there is definitely a concern,” Kemery said. “That’s why we are investigating this.

Looking for California Victims of Flea Products

I have been fighting Hartz  for years. See my web sites below.

I recently was contacted by Joel Grover of KNBC. He is a well respected award winning reporter for NBC. He wants to do a story about this horrible problem of flea products injuring and killing our belove animal friends. He asked if I could supply names and emails  of people who had  problems with flea products hurting their animals, especially people within California so he could interview them in person.

I think another news story will help to warn the public about just how  dangerous  these products are, which are being sold as safe to use.

Please email me at either [email protected] or [email protected] get involved, help save our pets.

Thank you
