I wish I had known the horrible stories about Hartz Milk Replacer for kittens before I had given it to my babies.I rescued 5 little girls after their mother passed away.I was feeding them milk replacer from my vet,and one afternoon I ran out.So I went to Walmart and bought Hartz precision nutrition milk replacer not knowing that days later I will lose three of my girls.Last Wednesday my girl named Charmin and on Thursday my girl Phyllis were put to sleep. And yesterday afternoon my girl Dottie had to go and be put down also. The symptoms are the same as I have been reading on here. Vomiting, off balance, falling over when trying to walk, unconsciousness, glassy stare, and unresponsive. My vet thought it was hypoplasia not thinking it could of been the milk they were drinking. My babies were 5 weeks old doing great until I fed them that milk. Then yesterday afternoon I thought what if it is the milk. I never in my wildest dreams would of thought I would of found this website, and people with the same thing as I went through. The guilt I feel is unbelievable. Sure you can say I didn’t know that the milk was gonna kill my babies, but it doesn’t change the fact that the guilt will always be there. Why is this product even allowed to be on the shelves. How many other people will go through what I went through and not realize it is the very product that they thought was gonna help their kittens. Hartz needs to be taught a lesson. If there is anything I can do I am there to help. I don’t want others to suffer like I have.
This was way back in 1989 but the emotional trauma of what I suffered watching my 3 kittens die is still very much with me. I had a female cat that I rescued from outside my home one winter, she gave birth to three kittens, adorable little tabbies. We fell in-love instantly and named them. There was Cricket, Buddy & Peanut. When they turned 16 weeks old I felt they were old enough to bathe in a flea shampoo to rid them of the fleas momma cat has passed on to them at birth. And according to HARTZ’S FLEA SHAMPOO instructions they only had to be at least 12 weeks old for their product to be safely used. So being that these kittens were 16 weeks old I felt safe in using it. BIG MISTAKE! I applied the shampoo as instructed and within MINUTES, ALL THREE STARTED RUNNING IN CIRCLES AND MEWING URGENTLY WITH A FRIGHTENED LOOK ON THEIR FACES. Soon after Cricket started foaming at her little mouth and gasping for air, Buddy started having foam come out his NOSE and MOUTH, Peanut grew very weak and listless and flopped over like a dead fish and lay gasping for air mewing in silent cries. I rushed them to the sink and re-rinsed them over and over as they grew weaker in my hands. I would rinse one and pass it to my (then 9 years old) daughter to dry off and try to rub them back to life, while I rinsed the other and so on. Finally 10 minutes into the horrific ordeal I panicked and called the emergency number of a local vet who said that it sounded like they had been poisoned and were too far gone to do anything for them because by the time “they start foaming the poison has entered their blood stream and it’s too late to save them” quote, un-quote. The vet also suggested I keep rinsing them with clear water and maybe they might pull out of it but to prepare for the worst. I crying started begging him to come help me, I would pay him holiday pay and after hours pay to just come so these babies wouldn’t suffer as they were literally suffocating in this thick foam oozing from their noses and mouths. He apologized and said there was nothing he could do for them, to call animal control and maybe they could help me. I called animal control and the lady who said there was nothing they could do either still came over quickly because I told her that I wanted a witness to what we were seeing and what the kittens were suffering. She sat with me and we ALL cried as we held these tiny babies in our hands watching them grow more and more listless and cold, all the while making gasping mewing movements with their tiny mouths like fish out of water, silent screams for help and gasping to try to get air in their lungs to breathe. They lived for another 30 minutes. Suffering ungodly pain and torture as they suffocated to death in this poisonous foam. My daughter had nightmares for months afterwards and she and I both still cry at the memories of how these kittens suffered. I called Hartz the very next day-a Monday-and was told that they had never had any complaints before and that they would gladly send me a box to return the actual bottle of shampoo to them for inspection. I stated that without the bottle I would have no proof of what I had used and what if it disappeared or was mysteriously lost in the mail? They assured me this would not happen and they would insure that I was advised of every step that bottle made from arrival to the results of their testing. So I agreed and sent them the bottle. And waited for their call. It never came. I ended up (almost to the point of harassment) calling and calling them for days on end for three months and nothing. Finally almost 4 months later I was able to reach an actual Hartz person because I threatened to sue them, and was firmly told they had NO RECORD of my name, my calling, or ANY complaints from anyone and did I have the bottle to prove it was their product I had used. I hung up in frustration and have vowed to insure no other cats are EVER killed by Hartz products again and voice it to anyone willing to listen. HARTZ PRODUCTS KILL CATS! PERIOD. And Hartz is insensitive and could care less because they are protected by bylaws and wordy powerful attorneys who know how to manipulate the system to insure they are not held accountable. So the next best thing is to boycott their products until they’re removed from consumer markets. DON’T BUY HARTZ PRODUCTS. Please! Save yourselves the heartache my daughter and I still keenly feel to this day….and If you value your sanity and the lives of your cats DO NOT USE HARTZ PRODUCTS ON THEM EVER!!!
I bought Sergeant’s Gold Squeeze-On for cats from Target in Garner, NC White Oak Shopping Center on Saturday October 7th, 2012. I applied it to my cat Byron when I got home in the early evening exactly how the package said. He was at least 12lbs, and the package said cats and kittens over 5lbs. All day Sunday he seemed to be fine. Was a little more cuddly than normal, but nothing to really take alarm to. I noticed he has started to have twitching, but I thought it might be the fleas and the medicine working. Monday morning, October 9th, 2012, we woke up around 8am to find Byron lying on the side of our living room chair wedged between the chair and tv stand. He was already dead. No sign of vomiting, but now I am assuming he had a seizure and fell before he died. Byron would have been a year old next month, and was a very active totally healthy cat! I called the company and was told that since we did not have an autopsy done (we could not afford it) that they will assume it was not their product. Since Byron was not vomiting, and we had no actual proof of seizures (which is what their product causes) they would document it but that is it. I did not call wanting anything from the company, I just wanted answers as to WHY this product is still on the shelves. It never occurred to me that it would cause Byron to die. Now I have to live with the guilt of what I put my cat through. I will NEVER use anything on my animals over the counter again. I just really wish I would have been able to notice something, and done anything to help him 🙁 Please do NOT use this product on any animal. RIP Byron. You will be missed by us all.
We have had a bad flea problem for a couple of weeks now, and have been trying desperately to keep the parasites off of our dog and two cats. We used hartz on all of the animals two days ago. This morning I rushed to the vet with one of our cats after I found her on the floor, unable to stand, laying in a clear fluid that she seemed to have vomited. By the time the vet saw her, her heart had stopped beating momentarily, and she was declared brain dead. She passed away just hours later, and our vet says the toxins in the shampoo did it to her. The other cat and dog were immediately bathed in regular shampoo, but this is outrageous that a product so toxic is being allowed on the shelves. It was not time for Miss Kitty to go, and all of our hearts are broken. I am mortified that something hasn’t been done about this product yet.
Hi, if you’re on this site, it’s because you care about your pets. If you’re reading this post, it is because you share something in common with me; The dislike of Hartz products!
Like most people, I have used a Hartz line product and its side effects nearly killed my cat. After reading some of the more serious cases reported due the lack of respect of Hartz, I consider my cat lucky. Even though, she needed serious medical attention because she was very dehydrated and had lost so much weight because her appetite decreased, my 6 year old cat survived.
To show Hartz that they cannot get away with this, please read and sign my petition that I have started on the link below.
I appreciate everyones support, please and thank you!
Hi, i’m making a video about the victims of Hartz. If you’re interested please email me pictures of your pets, of you and your pet together, children and kids playing with pets etc. The animals don not have to be just the victims of Hartz, but the pictures can be of any pet you currently own or any pet you have previously owned.
The pet’s name:
Your name: (optional)
The pet’s age:
The product used on pet: (optional)
*If you could also send a short message along with the pictures (2-4 sentences) talking about your pet, the grief of the incident, your pets favorite things to do etc. All this would help alot.

I can’t express how angry I am right now. It was four hours ago that my kitten had his young life snatched away from him by Hartz Milk Replacement.
We started feeding it Hartz Milk Replacement for Kittens, prior to me knowing about this site. About three hours later, the kitten crawled away under a table, where we thought he was going to take a nap, since he likes to sleep. About another hour passed, and it appeared it was having a bad dream. Seconds after our kitten started what seemed like silently gasping for air. We tried to move him out from under the table, and discovered his whole body was limp. His eyes were in a dead stare, and he wouldn’t blink. Accelerated heartbeat. And very soon after – his young life ended.
We are heartbroken. All the things he never got to see and do. After reasearching online at what could have caused such a sudden thing, I stumbled upon this website, and was instantly stunned to discover that Hartz products caused deaths for other people’s pets as well. A bunch of murderers they are.
If this product did not exist, my kitten would still be alive right now. I know it.
I’m happy to find this website, after two years of stabbing regret.
A week before I began my senior year of high school, my mom called to tell me that the cat we’d moved from my house into her apartment had become horribly flea infested. Chihiro was seven years old and was a beautiful long-haired black cat, with bright green eyes. She’d had at least 7 litters, in her prime, and had been taken to my Mom’s as a form of retirement.
I brought ChiChi home and proceeded to bathe and care for her fleas. She was sick from it, and we couldn’t afford a vet. Unfortunately, I made one of the worst mistakes of my life. I bathed her with Sergeants flea and tick shampoo, then treated her with Hartz.
My sweet old girl went into shock within an hour. I called an emergency line, thinking it was because (while leashed to the porch for a few moments) she’d fallen and nearly strangled herself.
As she began to foam at the mouth, going rigged and unable to move, I realized what had really gone wrong. I tried to fix my mistake, to no avail. Chihiro started to writhe in pain, looking for somewhere to hide. I followed her into the kitchen, where she collapsed on the floor, unable to go any farther.
17 years old and home alone, I panicked and watched the life starting to leave her eyes. I had begun to study for veterinary medicine and knew that cats received CPR the same way as an infant, through the nose. I tried for several minutes to keep her going, my efforts useless…
It couldn’t be any later than 10am, and I had watched an animal equivalent to a sister fade away before my very eyes, alone in the effort and unable to do a single thing except to keep her company.
It’s been two years, now, and I’ve been spreading the word to every pet owner I know any time flea products come up in conversation.
Please, if you value your pet, never use Hartz. Never trust something so close to ‘Hurts’.
We had 3 cats and 1 dog at our house and now we just have 1 cat and 1 dog. Our story is very sad and no one else needs to go through it.
Yesterday we noticed a flea on one of our russian blues, we went to buy some flea controll, Hartz was the brand we decided to purchase. We get home and put the flea controll on all of our animals. Later on in the evening we started to noticed that our 2 russian blues were acting strange. There body movements were jerky, the face was twiching, there meow was weak. Shortly after they both started to have seizurs. At this point we decided to put down the 2 cats. We could not watch them suffer anymore. It was a horrible experiance and no one should have to deal with this kind of loss.
If I would have research this product and found this site we would never bought it.
This product should be taken off the store shelves so no one else have to suffer the lose that we endured last night. Hartzs need to change there packaging to say it may cause death if used. Right now all it says is that there might be some sensitivity to the product. To me that says nothing about death or the side effects that it may cause. Only if we would have know maybe our loved ones would still be with us.
R.I.P Tika and Carneilius. You will always be in our hearts.
