Trying to save money can end up costing you so much more…

Last summer I bought some Hartz flea products to treat my cat with because I didn’t have the money to buy Advantage.

A few days after I treated my cat I noticed that the fur had fallen out where I had applied the product. Otherwise he was acting normal, and so I gave him the next dose the following month. Again his fur fell out, but this time he also started to have seizures.

I took him to the vet and they said that all they could do was have us watch him for more seizures, and that we should wash all the flea product off of him. He continued to have seizures which got progressivly worse.

We finally took him to another vet becuase our original vet kept saying to watch him instead of treating him. The second vet ran blood work to rule out a specfic ailment, and put him on Phenobarbital. Of course the bloodwork all came back perfectly normal, and now my cat is on anti-seizure medicine for anywhere from six months to the rest of his life.

All because I tried to save $30.

Mistaken dose

On February 24, after a long day at work, I got home and found my Maine Coon and German Shorthair had fleas. Mistakenly I had grabbed the wrong flea stop(Hartz One Stop) instead of a safe presription Advantage and put it on my cat. By the next morning she was disoriented, twitching, and shaking. I came home from work, and immediatly gave her a bath, and called the Vet. I was told to bring her in immediatly and she was put on IV medication, and given medication to calm down the shaking. I picked her up 6 hours later. Today she is still twitching, has trouble with balance, and is clearing not feeling well. I found this website, and got the number to call Hartz about what long term effects this would cause my cat. I was transfered to customer relations, put on hold, and told they have no information on any long term effects. When I requested to speak to someone more knowledgable, she hung up on me. That’s their customer service. I feel terrible what I have done to my cat, and believe this product should be taken off the market.

Hartz Flea drops almost killed my 2 cats

I put Hartz flea drops on my 2 cats on 2-21-03, the next day at 2pm my cat Bingo started having convolusions. I was trying to hold him and talk to him while he was having it. Once it stoped after 20 minutes he was still shaking and having body tremors. I rushed him to the vets after they talked to me they asked me if he was on any meds. I told them I had used Hartz flea drops on him last night. The gave him so shots to try to stop the shaking and then washed he really well he was still have body tremors. They kept him. Then I come home an hour later my other cat was sitting on my bed shaking really bad so I rushed her to the vet. They both had to stay 24 hours and they are now home and on muscle relaxers the one cat is still having lots of body tremors. They both can’t seem to keep their blance. The vet is not sure if the one cat is going to make it and she thinks they will both have permanent damage. Its so sad, I feel awful I would have never used this stuff on my cats if I would have known It could kill them and it has already killed many. It should be taken off the market.

Cat Poisoned by Hartz Plus Sensitive!

I purchased Hartz plus cat and kitten flea and tick drops (sensitive) (under 10 lbs) for my 1 yr old cat at Winn Dixie on 2533 Thomas Drive in Panama City Beach, Florida. (850) 234-1200. Ingredients Phenothrin (batch 26002-08-2) 85.7% and Methoprene (65733-16-6) 2.9% The first time I used it I noticed the cat react bizarre after I applied it behind his neck. Scratching and licking as much off as he could. That was approximately 2 months ago. Last night 2/9/03….I put the second dose on him. Immediately the same reaction and then he ran outside. When he returned 4 hours later, he was severly shaking (all muscles) and not able to properly walk. His eyes were dialated. I looked at the hartz box and there was no warnings about reactions. I looked on the web at and said this:

“Q: How can I determine if my pet is having a reaction to a pesticide?

A: When used correctly, it is unlikely there will be any side effects to your animal. HOWEVER, sensitivities may occur after using ANY pesticide product for pets. If signs of sensitivity occur, immediately bathe your pet with a mild non-pesticide soap and rinse with large amounts of water. If signs continue, consult a veterinarian. If your veterinarian has any questions, he/she may contact the Hartz? Control Pet Care System? hotline directly at 1-800-275-1414.”

I immediately called them. They were closed. SO I bathed my cat with regular shampoo for humans and then dried him with a towel and prayed he would be better in the morning since I couldn’t afford after hours vet care. I did give him a tiny bit of benedryl in case he was having an allergic reaction to it. This caused vomiting and foaming at the mouth. He wouldn’t eat or drink.

He remained this way all evening, and was better this morning. Although he is still having slight rear walking problems. I called Hartz this morning and they acted so surprised I had a problem with this product and instructed me to send it back to them and they would reimburse me for it. After reading many weblinks about it, this product should be pulled off the shelves!!! I then emailed the EPA link on your website and also emailed my story to HARTZ. We’ll see what the reaction is!

Last year, the Hartz Mountain Corporation?the huge pet-product conglomerate?reached
an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding
pesticides used in its flea and tick products for cats and kittens: Hartz would
institute a ?label improvement and consumer education program? because of thousands
of reports of harmful effects from two of its products.

Of great concern to PETA was that the EPA news release on this agreement also stated
that it was requiring Hartz ?to submit an additional animal safety study conducted
by an independent laboratory.? We knew that Hartz might deliberately poison yet more
animals in laboratories to further test these pesticides in order to keep its
products on the market. So PETA wrote to Hartz President and CEO Bob Devine on
December 10, 2002, requesting additional information on the EPA-required toxicity
testing and even offered to help devise a non-animal test strategy. Click here to

Despite numerous follow-up phone calls, PETA has yet to receive any acknowledgment
or response to our letter and concerns. Please contact the president of Hartz
Mountain Corporation and let him know that you refuse to buy his company?s products
until this issue is resolved and Hartz commits to non-animal methods to measure the
toxicity of the flea and tick products involved in this controversy. There is no
excuse for further animal tests. If Hartz tells you that the EPA is requiring

Nearly two months ago, Hartz Mountain Corporation agreed to temporarily stop shipping two popular flea and tick control products for cats after consumers complained the products were making their pets sick.

But you can still find the products on store shelves as retailers wait for the pesticides to be replaced with the same product, just a different label.

Most stores that sell Hartz Advanced Care Flea and Tick Drops or Once-a-Month Drops are running low. Since Nov. 19 Hartz has temporarily stopped shipping these two products to stores.

Hartz is required to recover, repackage and re-label all new stock. They were not required to recall the product already on store shelves.

“It’s not actually an issue about whether or not the product is safe because it is, it’s about the application of the product…and so because it is such a popular item, it’s something that customers count on regularly to be able to use on their pets, you’ll find that most places are continuing to sell it awaiting the new packaging to be issued,” said H-E-B spokeswoman Kate Brown.

That new packaging will include a more detailed precautionary label. One that specifies applying the product only at the base of the cat’s head to keep the cat from licking it off and perhaps becoming sick.

A two year long EPA investigation found thousands of cats had adverse reactions, some died, because of the way owners had been applying the pesticide.

Along with application changes to the label, Hartz is also required to provide consumers with educational brochures at the point of sale and these helpful pamphlets should be found anywhere in a sleeve next to the product.

But those familiar with the product advise caution with old or new packages alike.

Attorney Anthony Fozzolo has filed a class action lawsuit against Hartz, not from the labeling, but because of what’s in the product.

“I would think twice about using the products that out there you know all you need to do is go onto the Internet to see the number of stories of people who have had adverse incidents with it so I caution viewers to do your research and speak with your veterinarian before using the product,” said Anthony Vozzolo, attorney for Faruqi and Faruqi Law Firm in New York.

Officials from Hartz Mountain Corporation say the product is completely safe and that they’re confident these new enhancements will make good products even better.

EPA officials say they will be monitoring the products still on store shelves. They fear consumers won’t be aware of the new application instructions.

EPA encourages consumers to send back any old packaged product for a full refund.

Consumers should begin seeing newly labeled products on shelves beginning Jan. 18.

Hartz Flea Collars

“I did take Spaz to the vet, and was told this was a reaction to the collar. She was
given anti-inflammatory medication and I have to clean her with saline and neosporin
for the antibiotic factor. The poor thing now looks awful. No hair on the neck,
with a red, raw and weeping wound.

I do plan on sending the vet’s info(she actually gave me the record and wrote a
special note to Hartz on it just for me) to the company. I also took pictures of
her to add to the letter. They sounded so shocked when I spoke with them. We’ll
see what happens.

Just wanted to get the word out to people that the Hartz 2 in 1 flea collars can
give serious reactions.”

Due to safety concerns stemming from use of two flea and tick control products for cats and kittens, EPA is announcing that the Hartz Mountain Corporation has agreed to enact measures to reduce potential risks to pets from using these products. EPA sought this agreement due to concerns over safety issues based on thousands of adverse effects incidents investigated by EPA. Under this agreement, Hartz will implement a product recovery, label improvement, and consumer education program for two pesticide products: Hartz Advanced Care Brand Flea and Tick Drops Plus for Cats and Kittens (EPA Reg. No. 2596-148) and Hartz Advanced Care Brand Once-a-Month Flea and Tick Drops for Cats and Kittens (EPA Reg. No. 2596-151). Hartz is required to recover, repackage, and re-label currently available stock. The relabeled products, which will start appearing on store shelves over the next several months, will include stronger precautionary statements and use directions. The following Questions and Answers have been developed in an effort to provide consumers with information about the actions being taken.

Problems with Hartz flea collars
