I got very lucky…

I was very lucky with my Hartz experience. Although, at the time, I had no idea. I noticed my two 10 month old kitties were scratching often, and I noticed some fleas. Fearing an outbreak, I bought the Hartz medicine thinking I’d wipe it out before it got out of hand.
I applied it to one of my cats. It got too low on his back, and for fear of him licking it, I washed him off immediately. I don’t know why I didn’t think about the cats licking each other, but I didn’t. About a week later, I noticed a big dry bump of skin on my cat’s back. That is when I started to look up info about Hartz.
I was shocked at what I found and how close I was to hurting my kitties. I was very upset and very grateful at the same time. I have written PETA on this matter. They fight tooth and nail for animal rights, and I think that some organization like that will need to get involved for these products to stop being made.

My 8 year old cat is mentally & physically damaged after seizures

July 2003. Our cats are indoor/outdoor cats. We usually use a flea collar but switched to the Hartz flea and tick spray a week and a half ago. Our black cat Freddy was sprayed the first day. The other cat the next day. The next morning we found him in full seizure. We quickly took both cats to the vet where they were bathed. Freddy has been at the vets since. He doesn’t appear to know anything anymore, like he has brain damage. They were able to comfort him and reduce the seizures for the first couple of days, then he ran a fever of 105.5 so it was necessary to put him on antiobotics. He couldn’t move for several days, but now is sitting up and walking some. He appears to have injured his back during a seizure. He always turns his head and neck to the left and looks lost. He has not recognized me since the second day of seizing. He even growels at me now. He sits in the cage and looks lost and scared. I believe he has lost some vision. His eyes are still somewhat dialated even after 1 week. When we get him out of the cage he looks confused, and possibly in pain. He ate food one day, but has quit again. Does anyone know anything about recovering from this severe poisioning? After having a catheter for a day or so, He is not able to go to the bathroom. and does not know us anymore. I don’t know whether or not to have the vet put him to sleep or keep hoping he will mentally and physically come back to us.

We looked on the internet and found all this info about Hartz products and realized that we are a year or two behind the game. My children cry and want their cat back. Yet, I do not know what to do anymore. Our hope is fadeing, and our vet bills are high. I plan to send the vet bills and diagnosis to Hartz. But thats not the point. We love our cats of 8 years.

Did follow the new directions

I didn’t know about the severe reactions many cats were having to Hartz flea and tick products. I bought a Hart product for killing fleas and ticks on cats 10 lbs and under. The next day one cat was fine, the other was listless, not eating, slight tremor (dipping her head). I tried to wash it off, but the cat fought me and scratched me up pretty bad. I called the emergency vet number and they said to bring it in or try to get off the pesticide by rubbing with a wet towel. I chose to do the latter and wait the 4 hours til my husband could get home and help me give her a bath. We gave both cats a bath using a non-insecticide pet shampoo at a diluted strength. That was yesterday, Saturday. Now, Sunday morning, the tremor has stopped, but the cat is still listless with no appetite. I’m hoping she is getting better. If she is still not eating by tomorrow, Monday, I will bring her in to the vet. I will NEVER buy another Hartz product again.

Hartz is heartless!

As with the other stories stated, I, too, was unaware of the Hartz flea and tick horror. This evening I unassumingly applied Hartz Flea and tick prevntion drops to my cat, Cleo. Within seconds she started vomitting and foaming at the mouth. We immediately called our vet and were advised to wash her off w/ Dawn dish detergent. She seems better now but we’ll have to keep a watchful eye on her. We feel lucky to have had such a minor reaction compared to other stories. Words cannot describe how infuriated I am at Hartz and I will find out any other products that they make so I can boycott them!

Small doses = Big bills

After my indoor cat had mastered the art of popping out screens, I decided a flea treatment would be a good idea. Even though she was over 10 lbs., I didn’t feel comfortable using the dosage for that size. Opting for the dosage for cats 10 lbs. and under, I administered it per the directions. Imagine my surprise when my poor cat started to have difficulty walking, began to pant and drool, and couldn’t stand to be touched. When I called the emergency vet, she knew that it was Hartz before I even had the chance to tell her the brand!

After a night in the hospital, hooked up to a catheter and an IV, my little patient gets to come home today. While her battle may be over, Hartz’s is just beginning! I’ve filed the paperwork and will make sure that Target pulls the brand off it’s shelves and Hartz will be seeing my sizeable vet bill!

Hartz Kitten Flea Collar Kills Kitten

Tiger was my 4 month old kitten I had rescued at 4 weeks old, after having been abandoned. He was such a good kitten, and after noticing a couple of fleas, I figured I would try a hartz kitten flea collar. It said it was SAFE for kittens aged 12 weeks and older, and since he was 4 months old (16 weeks), I figured It wouldnt hurt. 12 hours after i put the flea collar on him, he was internally bleeding, and bleeding out the ears. I rushed him to the emergency vet clinic, where he stayed overnight, and had a seizure. I brought him home the next day, and took him to his normal vet. He was given Vitamin K and steroids to hopefully correct the bleeding and return him to a semi normal state. He was so anemic, he would barely move, and slept all day. The next day he seemed to get worse, and upon taking him back to the vet, there was little hope for him; he was suffering. After a hard decision, I decided to put him to sleep, because he didnt deserve to be in pain. He also didnt deserve to die from a flea collar. I hope Hartz gets the axe, because they arent going to get away scott free. If anyone has any ideas or stories similar, feel free to email or IM me. LOVE YOU TIGER. Always in my heart and never forgotten.

Oh Good God

We applied Hartz Advantage to both our cats last night – completely unaware of the horrible experiences of others’ poor cats. When we woke up this morning, our cats were completely different beings. Our feisty, strong-willed older cat now cowers around the apartment, twitching his head and flattening his ears at the slightest noise. Our baby cat, who was timid to begin with, won’t come out from under the bed and is constantly shaking her head. Her ears havent un-flattened since I saw her when I woke up. Both cats can’t stop shaking their heads. I know this isn’t the case, but it’s like all the fleas crawled inside their ears. They have been bathed and now we sit and wait to see if their reactions improve. We don’t have the money to take them to the vet and can only do so if the situation becomes so dire. I cannot believe Hartz is able to get away with this. Were this a product for people (children – imagine!), they would already be out of business. For a company that focuses on our cherished pets, how can they be so cold, careless, and quietly self-protecting when it comes to handling this matter???? I honestly cannot believe this….and I can’t believe we have put our cats through this. We are partially to blame in that we should have researched this product before using it but, as so many others have had terror with this poison, it should have been taken off the shelves long ago. I cannot express how much we love our cats and if these reactions prove to be permanent, there will be HELL TO PAY!!! I would rather live with fleas MYSELF than watch my cats suffer like this for another day.

On going Efforts Against Hartz

As most of you are aware there is a petition concerning this grave injustice being perpetrated by Hartz Mountain Company on the cat and dog loving consumers and their animals. The petition may be found at this URL http://www.petitiononline.com/hartz/petition.html

With what I and others view as a sell out of the main plaintiff in the class action suit to allow Hartz to settle out of court, (if you are willing to cave in for the price of the product and Vet fees
incurred). The wishes and hopes of so many to have Hartz Flea and Tick Drops removed from sale to the public has all but vanished from site.

There are those who will continue to do anything and everything possible to see that no more animals are injured or die as a result of the use of this product. The options we have are few in number. The petition is the best recourse we have left at this point At present it has 649 signatures.

We need more signatures to have this petition taking seriously by the EPA and The HSUS would also like to keep track of these cases. (For more about this see the end of this message)

If you have not signed it please do so. Tell your friends, family and co works about what you know this product has done. Ask them to sign the petition

I bet you haven’t seen any new news stories about Hartz have you? No, because there haven’t been any. We NEED one badly.

One that will mention the petition and give the URL to it. Ya all following me? I hope so. We need to keep this in the news, keep it fresh in the publics minds.

Anyone have any type of news contacts at all???

Has anyone’s cat or dog recently been a Hartz Victim? If so don’t be bashful, now is not the time. We need you. We need you to start making noise to your local news stations, TV, radio and news papers about what Hartz did to your beloved companion. We need you to sell the idea that the newsperson should mention the petition in the story.

If your game for doing this but not sure how or want help please just ask we are 100 % behind you. After all we all hate Hartz for what they did to our critters and that they intent to continue to hurt animals just so they don’t lose any possible money from the sale of this horrible product.

It all comes down to the animals and we know all to well what Hartz has and will continue to do to animals if they are not stopped. This maybe the last way we can stop Hartz. We need your help to stop Hartz. No one person is going to take down Hartz, but together I honestly think we can do it.

By the way if you think ,’The EPA won’t listen,”
well I think a 1000 or more signatures will make them listen. I think it may give them the added pressure to continue/reopen the investigation of Hartz and all the claims that have been filed since 2002 when they were doing the investigation.

They are not at all happy with the studies Hartz submitted to them on the product. They said they were inconclusive and did not meet the guidelines set down by the EPA for testing of these types of products. They told Hartz they wanted to see testing done by independent sources on the product.

Please do whatever you can to help in the fight against Hartz. Make noise, call or write letters to news stations, radio stations, newspapers.

Write your government officials ask them to bring pressure on the EPA over the tremendous numbers of complaints filed over the years about animals being seriously injured and/or dead after this product being applied by humans that do read and follow the instructions. make sure if you filed a complaint about the product that in the file it contains your words saying you read and followed the directions and you did not use a dog product on a cat.

If you don’t feel you got that across in the complaint you have already made. Get hold of who ever took the complaint. Demand that they open the file, add that to it and resubmit it with the addition. It is within your civil rights to do so.

That is very important, because that is what Hartz is leading the EPA to believe. That you were not intelligent enough to buy the correct product or follow the directions on the package.

Well, I think you are intelligent enough to have bought a cat product if you have a cat and a dog product if you have a dog and I think you did read and follow the directions. The fact that you are online reading this pretty much proves that you are capable of reading.

I and the innocent animals thank you for your help.
