Susan is my 2 1/2 month old kitten who has recently had a flea issue, I went to my local CVS and picked up this Hartz drops that you put on the back of their neck so that they cannot lick it. I gave her this medication at about, 11:30pm. At 8:30 in the morning I awoke to Susan having a seizure ontop of me. I rushed her to the vet and she has now been there for 24 hours and I am able to pick her up in the morning. To think that I almost killed my own cat makes me sick, even more so that others will go through this traumatic experience.

Here’s a photo of my once healthy and vibrant cat, Max. He was 10 years old, and fourteen pounds.

Friend to all who entered my home, he also enjoyed the companionship of dogs! When I had friends over, Max was the life of the party.

I buried him yesterday. He died as a result of my putting a Hartz flea collar on him and leaving it on for a week before noticing he was becoming lethargic, eating habits were changing, and his whole personality was changing. I found this site in an attempt to find out what might be the reason for his declining health, and was horrified to learn that I was poisoning him with what I thought to be a safe product. The collar came off immediately, but the damage had been done. After that, all I could do was keep him comfortable and cared for until the end.

If I’d only known beforehand … my dear pet would still be with me and I wouldn’t be writing this letter. Everyone I do know now knows Max’s story, and about this site. Thank You.

Two weeks ago, I adopted an adorable four month old black kitten named Elroy. Unfortunately when I adopted Elroy, I also adopted his fleas and they also took up residence in my six month old kitten named Tibbs. I decided to go the cheap route and I bought a pack of Hartz Ultraguard 3 in 1 for kittens and cats. I put the flea drops on my kittens Monday morning of last week and then went about my business. My cats fortunately did not have any adverse reactions, but for some reason, something possessed me to look up this product Monday evening. I typed the product into Google and immediately came upon this site. Upon reading a couple of your stories, I immediately whisked my cats into the sink and thoroughly washed them with Dawn soap. They were scheduled to go to the vet the next day for a checkup, and I mentioned this to her. She told me about how she’s had to treat quite a few cats and dogs who were seizing from this product (unfortunately she said that most did not survive). I sincerely want to thank all of you who have shared your stories on this website. I believe that you all have helped to save my cats. I just can’t tell you how sorry I am about the ordeals that you and your pets have had to go through. It breaks my heart to read the posts on here, but you guys are doing a great thing in sharing your stories. I would love to see Hartz clean up their act or completely shut down (even better) but until then, I will keep you and your pets in my thoughts and prayers.

I dunno what to say… I swear I feel so stupid and so frustrated.

Yesterday I discovered that my Sheltie of a year and a half Benny (A mini Lassie if u want) had fleas.. so I was concerned, ran to Rite Aid and the ONLY product I see there was a HARTZ.. i come back home, apply the shampoo and put the actual flea control thing.

Afterwards. I decided to come online just to check HARTZ reviews OUT OF CURIOUSITY, I see this website.. I BECOME HYSTIRICAL took Benny and washed him right away and kept him under supervision..

NOW WHERE THE SCARY PART COMES.. I realize after that that some of my dog’s fur have LITERARELY melted and got mixed up so i had to cut some of it because it had formed like a SOLID BALLS OF HAIR… It was REALLY weird.. at first i thought some of the people here are exagerating but now i know it is the truth..

I thank God it was ONLY his fur.. I don’t care, the Fur will grow back but YOU GUYS HAVE SAVED BENNY’S LIFE SO THANK YOU because if it weren’t for you, i wouldn’t have acted and washed it away ASAP.

I FEEL ASHAMED TO LIVE IN A COUNTRY WHERE THIS PRODUCT IS STILL ON THE MARKET.. A LEGAL ACTION SHOULD BE TAKEN.. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!

Ok I feel just horrible. Our beloved family cat Spitz who I hand feed as her mother abandoned her just passed next to me in our home this morning at 7:30 AM pacific time. Spitz was 15 1/2 years young and a beautiful long haired calico female with golden green eyes. I originally purchased her a new flea collar about one month ago but she seemed to still have alot of fleas. She was warm loving and demanded to be brushed daily with a good appetite before given the Hartz one spot treatment. I gave it to her Thursday afternoon. The next day she was kind of sleepish but still eating and walking around demanding her normal attention. Then she started laying in weird places, then not eating and finally she would not move from the front of our refrigrator. Last night I wrapped her in a towel and she cried and had an potty accident. I cleaned her and put her in a bed with warm towels. This morning I went to pet her and she cried, I then tried to give her water with an eye drop and she would not drink it. I called the emergency vet to take her in, then went to the bathroom to use it. I came out to check on her and she had stopped breathing. THEN I WENT ON LINE AND FOUND THIS STUFF ABOUT HARTZ!!! WHAT THE *UCK!! I’AM PISSED AND WILL NEVER BUY ANY PRODUCT BY THEM. SHE WAS DEAD IN THREE DAYS AFTER HER TREATMENT OF HARTZ. YOU SCUM POISON KILLING CAT FREAKS

Today is a sad day! My family lost our beloved cat Bianca. She was itchy from some fleas.. so I wanted to bathe her to relieve her stress. She was sleeping peacefully on my bed. My son and I disturbed her to bathe her to “make her feel better” – I bought the Hartz Groomers Best Hairball Control Shampoo. Once I turned on the water she was a bit stressed and attempted to jump out of the tub. My teenaged son decided to get in the tub with her to calm her down. She did relax. We rinsed her with water first.. the water turned ORANGE.. She put some soap on her.. she went limp.. my son said something is wrong.. so I frantically rinsed her off. We started to rub her with a towel.. and she began seizing… yoweled once then limp. I noticed she wasn’t breathing. I attempted kitty CPR to no avail. Bianca died in my arms. We are devastated. Hartz to do a necropsy to find out what killed her.

I love my 13 yr old 6 lb Yorkie Chewch and consider him as much a part of my family as my 5 yr old Son. As a rule I don’t like to use chemicals on any of my pets such as Frontline etc but realize sometimes they may be needed . When my wife brought home the Hartz Ultraguard Flea & Tick drops I figured we would give it a try ; that maybe it wont be as harsh as Frontline and I trusted a company as old as Hartz . Even then because he is a small Yorkie…I used less than the recommended dosege for his size and weight and on account he is an older dog.

Well we are keeping our fingers crossed and praying. A day or so after applying the Hartz Ultraguard Chewch began to vomit and have severe diarreah. He became lethargic and could hardly stand up. We quickly went to the Vet who took blood, gave him subQ liquid injections for dehydration and medicine to control the vomiting and diarrhea. As much as I hated to do it because he was so sick…I gave Chewch a quick Bath too. The next day we got the news……very high Kidney blood numbers- possible Kidney malfunction. The Vet asked if we changed anything or “gave him anything ”. I mentioned we used Hartz brand Flea and Tick drops which his assistant replied “Oh no…not good”…you should use Frontline” but did not elaborate so I just figured they were just trying to sell their product as opposed to the otc product.

It was’nt until a co-worker who is vehemently against the use of all of these Flea /tick pesticides, even many of the controversial shots that are given annually… opened my eyes and said to look into the possibility that it was this Hartz product that caused my Yorkies illness. He said I should check if other pet owners have had similar incidents with Hartz too.

After reading all of the horrible stories here it didnt take long for me to put the puzzle together noting the similarities of Chewchs symptoms to many of the Victims here. Ok so can I prove that Hartz UltraGuard did this to Chewch…maybe not. All I know are the above facts as well as the many similar stories and incidents here which strongly point to the possibility that Hartz Ultraguard nearly killed my Yorkie. I can only find comfort in saying “nearly killed” Chewch because he has slowly improved over the past few days but may not be out of the woods yet. You can bet that Hartz will be getting a vehement phone call and a letter from me blasting them for their use of this Terrible poison. What makes this even mor despicable is …Hartz…a long standing company who I thought was in the business of bettering the health of Pets is putting out a product that they market as a remedy which clearly should be removed but have failed to do so for whatever reason. I will be demanding that I be given a case number and be either wholly or partially compensated for the nearly $1,000 I had to pay out in Vet bills . I unfortunately will join the Alumni of other Pet Owners who have been Victimized by a clearly DANGEROUS Product. Please pray for my Yorkie Chewch. I will pray for all your Pets. Pass this on to any of your friends and family who own pets as I have…DO NOT USE HARTZ.

Today I bought some flea medication for Zeus my 15 pound Himalayan cat, because he appeared to have a little flea infestation…I thought I’d save money and bought the Hartz Brand at Target. BAD IDEA! Zeus immediately started scratching and running around the apartment strangely, acting like it hurt (where I …put the stuff on the back of his neck) and began to act a little crazy there for a minute. After looking online I saw this site, and I took him in and bathed him thoroughly and repeated soaped him with Dawn. He is ok tonight but because of my quick action (I believe) that the stuff was on him only a few minutes, and he is ok. I have been keeping a close eye on him. He is eating, drinking, pooping, peeing and playing like normal. I am taking the stuff back to Target tomorrow and plan on asking them NOT to SELL THIS BRAND. Thank god I still have my baby. I am sad reading what happened to others on here.

My kitten Sugar was 5 months old with fleas. She was an outdoor cat before my 7 year old and I adopted her. I gave her a bath and then applied some of the Hartz flea drops for kittens over 3 months. The only warning on the packet was “toxic to fish”. Nothing about the danger it could cause.

She was catatonic, very sleepy. I thought maybe she was just half-freaked from a bath. The next day she didn’t eat or drink much and only wanted held. I took her to the vet the next morning, they gave her a bath to get all the Hartz off of her and hooked her up to IV’s. They kept her overnight. Today they informed me she had fluid in her lungs from cardiac distress. She held on a few more hours, but passed away this afternoon.

I broke the news to my 7 year old. He lost his father a year and a half ago to cancer, and now he has another loss. A useless loss that never should have happened. I wish Hartz could have been with me to see my little boy sob. They should be held accountable for this!

I am lucky to have found this website before even purchasing any Hartz or “OTC” Pet pesticide products. A couple of things I have come across in my fight against fleas that I wanted to share so they could be passed along through readers:

1. Check for fleas the MINUTE you bring an animal home, and continue to check as we know that the flea cycle is basically the most evil thing ever invented and will perpetuate the existence of fleas in your home. Don’t let it get to the point that your pet is crawling in fleas to do something.

2. For my 7 week old kitten, who had about 15 fleas that we picked off of her by hand, being submerged (except for head) in a couple of gentle baths using a small amount of blue Dawn Dishsoap was enough to kill many fleas. We found it was most effective for investigation of the scalp/skin for her to be damp as we could more easily see fleas crawling around. If you sit with your pet and talk to them gently as you use a flea comb (only called so because of its fine teeth) and some tweezers, you can get a lot of fleas off of your pet. Be sure to have a bowl of hot soapy water to put the fleas in as they can hop away pretty quickly.

3. I just got a sample of a Flea and Heartworm application called Revolution (Selamectin) from my vet at the kitten’s first visit. It looks legitimate, however the side effects listed on the product (quite clearly, might I point out) sound really similar to some of the side effects experienced by drugstore pet products. I am concerned about using this product on my pet, so if anyone has had good luck with it, please post!

All in all, I think the best way to handle fleas on pets is to pay attention to them, groom them regularly, and always talk to a vet before you give your pet anything chemical.

Took my dog to the dog park the other evening, returned home to find he had fleas, Gave him a bath, dried him off and ran to the store and bought a Hartz Ultra Guard pro. Within an hour my dog had a hellacious cough. He had snuck a hamburger off the table earlier that was seasoned so I just figured he got a little too warm. Well next morning came and he still had the hard deep cough and after a few He would get out some flem that was clear and white. I frantacly searched the internet not thinking that the “medicine” is what did it. Till I googled the name of the product. Since Then I have washed him with Dawn and his coughing has reduced, its only the 3rd day. I am really worried. I called hartz customer service and filed a report. I couldn’t believe how casual this guy was. I asked does this kind of thing happen alot, and no joke his answer was “more than it probably should”. He Issued me a case number, and told me to call if he had to go to the vet, makes me wonder what they will do. My dog is eating and drinking, but every little bit he will cough cough cough and then a little flem. I just didn’t realize companies could knowingly sell this kind of stuff. They might as well sell cigarettes for dogs. And the best part is. He still had the fleas until I washed him with dish soap.

I despise Hartz . they won’t clean up their act, I’ve alread had that clearly proved by our discussion. I hope someone will close them down to protect all pets and their owners from this day on.

I would just like to thank the people who have posted their stories and to the creators of this website.

As a Vet tech working with animals, it breaks my heart when i see a kitten, cat, puppy or a dog come in to our clinic after using a hartz product. This stuff is so dangerous, we see animals come in shaking, foaming at the mouth, skin red and raw and even seizing. We sometimes have to stay overnight on a seizure watch. I know this stuff is cheaper then the advantage or revolution but if your pet needs to come in for an emergency, be placed on IV fluids, given medication and then hospitalization this will run you anywhere from $500-1000 with no guarantees of saving your pet.

I try to tell our clients about the dangers of pyrethrin based products such as hartz but some of them don’t believe me because they think we are just out to get there money- news flash: I didn’t go into this emotionally, mentally and physically exhausting proffesion for the money (we barely make above minimum wage) I did it because I love animals and want to help you protect your furry family members.

This is a pestacide- Do you really want that on your pet? Also what about that one year old that pets the cat? The reason these people CAN get away with this is because its a PESTACIDE and are not under the same FDA guidlines and restrictions as prescription products such as advantage and revolution.

I’m glad to see this website and hopefull it saves countless lives. Because as much as I love to see your pets I love to see them happy and healthy more!

Ok…so here goes, last night around 9:30 pm we were applying flea treatment to all our animals (3 dogs, 2 cats). Well somehow my 14 yr old daughter accidentally applied the DOG flea treatment to her 2 yr old cat. We didn’t immediately realize it, about half an hour later she came to me and said, Mom, Tigger isn’t acting right! She brought the cat with her and yes he was acting very strangely, his skin was crawling on his back, his tail was flipping around wildly, and he was darting all over the living room, meowing very loudly (NOT LIKE HIM AT ALL). We went and retrieved the med tube from the trash and off to the side noticed a small picture of what appears to be a cat with a X through it. So we determined it must have been a DOG flea treatment, thankfully my daughter only applied a quarter of the amount in the tube, the rest was still in the tube. We scrubbed his back with a mild hand soap and hoped that he would be fine. 15 minutes after finishing that, he again became agitated and was running wildly, this time we gave him a bath with dishsoap (he was not happy about this). He slept through the night in my daughter’s room, meowing, skin crawling, and running around the room. Called the vet this morning, they said that we had done everything right, as long as he wasn’t having seizures or drooling he would be fine. Well this afternoon he started to drool. Long story short, he is now at the vet, recieved 2 shots, and is being kept overnight for observation….We are hoping that he makes it……PLEASE DON’T LET HAPPEN TO U WHAT HAPPENED TO US!

To start, I looked on the box of Sentry Pro’s cheapest spot-on version and I can’t find anything that even says that you shouldn’t use it on a cat. Their extra strength version XFC says “Do Not Use on Cats,” but that is it.
I put approximately 1/2 a squeeze tube of the cheap Sentry-Pro on my Dog and 1/2 on my Cat. My dog weighs about 45lbs and barely moved all day. The act killed our cat, and this isn’t some kind of mild sickness or oops, this is pretty intense stuff. Donald was a really good cat, never had a single illness or problem, was incredibly well-behaved and liked by visitors, got along with dogs, and still played like a kitten at the age of 5. The producers of these products are sick people. They need to be stopped at some point. All of them: Hartz, Sentry-Pro, and Sergeants use PERMETHRIN as their active ingredient. This stuff is also the active ingredient in BUG BOMBS and RAID. We are being sold straight up pesticides to put on our dogs and cats. The absolute worst part about this is that I have found instances where these products have killed DOGS. For God’s sakes, the product is intended for dogs and it isn’t even safe for them. How does this happen? How do these big companies get away with this garbage? To whom ever reads this, know that if there is ever a mass court appearance, I and my wife would be happy to show with our story. I’m not usually one for taking things to court, but in this instance, I’d like some repayment for the personal anguish this has caused. Please be careful people.

My two cats here at my dad’s house, were both infested with fleas really, really bad. I mean I had never dealt with anything like this in my life, and of course me being strapped for cash at the time, and looking for a cheap way to combat these badboys decided to get a couple of Hartz Tick and Flea collars at the store I work at. Got home, put them on my cats, and felt a tad better for the time being. However, I began noticing that Kikyo (pronounced “Kee-kee-oh”), the elder cat here, was starting to get quite lethargic. Not only that, there was zero improvement with the fleas whatsoever, they were still crawling all over her and Noah. Noah eventually started acting the same way, very much lethargic. Kikyo actually acted more cuddly than usual, which was a positive change. However, guess what? The collars proved to be utterly useless as a mere 2 weeks later, the fleas were still attacking, and both of them continued to have unusual behaviour changes, with Kikyo exhibiting further lethargic-ness.

My dad eventually noticed how bad the fleas were getting when he saw them on Kikyo’s white belly, and decreed we had to do something about this. Eventually we bombed the house, and during that time I had the kitties treated at a local salon, the bombing failed though and I had to take them back to the salon. According to this place, one of the collars actually broke during a wash and got tossed, the other? It was suggested I get rid of it. I said “I will gladly do so, because these things were useless!” as I went to throw the other collar in the trash, I exclaimed “Hartz sucks!” and from there the salon worker told me they had someone come in for an emergency to get a Hartz product off their pet, I realized how fortunate I was to have my two kitties here today without much adverse effects at all, had I kept them on my kitties any longer, who knows what would’ve happened. Let’s just say I am using Frontline from now on, it has been working and though I saw one living flea on Kikyo one day after getting them home from my dad’s friend Cindy’s house during the time they were there before the exterminator arrived to take care of this problem, since then, I’ve seen nothing. Hartz is as useless and deadly as the day is long. If you really care about your pets, do NOT buy Hartz!

I can’t believe this product is STILL on the market..

In April of this year, we used the Hartz Anti Flea and Tick medication on our chihuahuas, and it brought me to tears. My oldest chihuahua, Max, could not even walk without screaming and yelping. The pads on his feet were burnt from the crap we put on him, and he was twitching, and could not stop. Minnie, only about 4 years behind him, began to shake and twitch. It was so heart aching to watch. The veteranarian straight up told us that Hartz is pure poison, and that it should never be used on any type of animal, no matter the age, type, height, or weight. He also said that they could’ve suffered from seizures, and could have had permanent neurological damage if we had waited another day to take them to the vet. My mother took care of them the whole way through, and I helped feed the dogs as they would not feed themselves.

Today, I noticed a few fleas on Minnie, and I quickly gave her a bath and checked her for them afterwards. As a precaution, I looked in our cleaning cabinent, and noticed the flea and tick spray in there. I thought that if it was harmful, that my mother would’ve thrown it away, so I went about using it. I sprayed on the furniture, a little bit of the carpet, and my dog’s cage where she sleeps, unknowing that is was made by the same company that made the flea and tick stuff we used on them in April. My mother stopped me in the middle of doing so, telling me that it was the poison that hurt the dogs, so I freaked out, and am washing the pillows, blankets, and the blanket in my dog’s cage in the wash right now. I cleaned out her cage, and am very nervous about letting the dogs out around the house. I am at my wits end with Hartz! I dont know what will happen if I let them out around the sprayed furniture, and I’m not sure what to do. I hate Hartz, and they are nothing but a cheap corporation that takes money from unknowing consumers! How could you sell shit like that to consumers looking for a solution as simple as fleas? I would rather my house be infested with fleas than to have another Hartz problem! NEVER use Hartz, please, it is not worth dealing with and getting into! Always read online about medications for your animals, you don’t want them to suffer from the horrible poison effects from Hartz or other harmful fake flea and tick products!

I truly feel for all of the stories of suffering on here. Our pets are family members. We wouldn’t give ourselves or loved one poison, so why does a company think they have a right to do this?

We just adopted a kitten, and i was given a Hartz flea and tick collar for him by my grandma, and i was busy at the time so i just threw it up on the counter. Well tonight i thought about putting it on him, and i had heard things in the past about Hartz so i decided to google them, and a bunch of complaint sites popped up and I clicked on this site.

All i can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your stories. I know some of them had to be painful. Your stories helped save my little kitty. That collar is now in the bottom of my trash can, and i will never again use there products.

He’s usually really playful but now he’s just balled up. He keeps letting out these horrible wines. I don’t know what to do. I’m hoping & praying that he overcomes this & is okay. This is a horrible brand, I don’t see how something this bad is even on the market!

I didn’t have a lot of money, so decided to “cheap out” and get the Hartz Flea drops at Canadian Tire.. 3 for $8.. wow, I thought, in comparison to $20 for the Advantage or Revolution, this is a good deal. BOY was I wrong! My poor baby developed a horrible reaction/allergy to this product and got several large oozing sores all over his neck and head. I happened to be away and my poor Mom had to take him to the vet, after extensive treatment, and ointment my cat did combat the issue. I would NEVER use this product again and would urge any pet lovers to boycott all HARTZ product. This company clearly do not love our pets.

DAMAGED FOR LIFE-- thanks to Hartz

to all out there who have furry family members, PLEASE take a moment of your time to read my story… and pray for my four legged child, sebbe (boxer).

my furry child (Seb) has been on frontline flea preventative for over 10 years now, with much success.. i have never noticed more than one flea on her, until this year. it has been very hot, and very dry–ideal flea romance weather apparently. needless to say, she has a LOT of fleas, and the frontline was just not cutting it, so my vet advised me i needed to supplement with some other method to help keep her comfortable.. she gave me many options, but i needed some time to think about it.

after much consideration, i really didnt want to give her anything else that may be potentially harmful to her, so i decided to simply bathe her more frequently (luckily i have no carpet-hence no house fleas) to try and rid her of the annoying itching. first couple times went GREAT.. killed and washed all fleas harmlessly down the drain… then i noticed within hours (after being outside) that she just picked up more, so i came up with this wonderful idea to get some flea spray to put very lightly on her legs to discourage the nasty blood suckers from jumping on her and hopefully extend the flea free afterbath for at least a couple days… off to the store i went..

i purchased Hartz 3 in 1 flea spray for DOGS.. at the local walmart (brand has been there for AGES, so i thought it must be okay)…. went home eager to help my bestest bud with her constant itching problems.. put Sebbe in the bath and washed away all those nasty fleas (once again) dried her off, and lightly (4 sprays) covered her legs from elbows down… within 15 minutes she COLLAPSED.. could not walk, drooling uncontrollably.. OFF TO THE BATH WE WENT.. i knew, from working at the shelter and the vet that she was having a reaction and washed it all off immediately!!!!

OFF to the vet we went… she was bathed several times.. and monitored closely for the next several hours. still drooling but seemed to be regaining her balance and walking ability–so she was brought home.

the next day however, the real damage reared its ugly head, she is completely paralyzed on one side of her head. cannot blink, cannot hold her tongue in, cannot eat unassisted, cannot drink effectively.. the entire right side of her face just hangs several inches below the left. she is damaged beyond belief.

PLEASE, i dont care what kind of pet you hold near and dear to your heart… PLEASE do not use any of the Hartz products. the vet told me i am very lucky that she is alive!!

after the damage was done, i found several websites and stories related to the damage done my hartz products… a day late and a dollar short. this company MUST be held responsible for the blatant disregard for the health and safety of our pets–

please pray for sebbe, and all of the other victims living with disabilities from this monsterous product.

feel free to contact me by email with any information on joining a class action lawsuit.. they must be STOPPED!!

I had just adopted my boy from a woman who had a ton of animals infested with fleas cooped up in her tiny apartment. I thought I was bringing him to a better life where he wouldn’t ever be mistreated or have to suffer but what I did to him was terrible.
After being in my home for just a few days my house was nearly infested with fleas not to mention my other cat was now itching like crazy. Money was tight and I wasn’t going to get paid for a while so I decided to buy Hartz flea drops and shampoo for cats.
I washed my older cat first and she, thank god had no issues that I could see other than aggression I thought was from discomfort…though I’d never had her hiss at me or scratch me before.
Next I took my boy, who was about 10 months old and began to wash him. I was not sure if he’d ever had a bath before so when he started freaking out I assumed he was just afraid and would calm down when he saw nothing bad was going to happen to him. He meowed deep and wallowed and struggled. I was nearly done, I was rinsing him and all of a sudden his head cocked back at me very violently and he went kind of limp kind of stiff in my arms. He was lifeless and his pupils were enormous. He was just staring at me with out blinking. I rinsed him very quickly and took him out of the bath and wrapped him in a towel. He was completely still, his breathing was only slight and he still wouldn’t blink. I laid there with him on the bathroom floor sobbing and rubbing him thinking he was about to die. I thought I gave him a heart attack from being so frightened. I just rubbed him gently and cried and tried to sing to him imagining he was full of fear and pain. We laid there for about half an hr. I closed his eyes for him and watched his chest for when he would stop breathing. I was holding him now rubbing his forehead…and all of a sudden he opened his eyes widely and meowed really unpleasantly and started to move his lower body like he was trying to get out of the towel. I was so happy I just held him with me for a few minutes to make sure he wasn’t dying.
He was lethargic and cranky the rest of the day and I noticed he was suddenly getting stuck to the carpet. Like his claws wouldn’t retract. He also seemed to have a hunch in his back most of the time like he was really tense. He went around the house meowing and getting stuck to things.
It’s been almost a year from then and he is alive thankfully but is still getting stuck to things, falling off of things, seems to have a poor depth perception, and is afraid of almost everything.
He didn’t act like this before, even when I met him in his original home he was outgoing and friendly and sweet.
Recently he seems to be getting into really weird positions and sleeping like that and then waking up and not being able to get out of them…like his body is tightening up or something.
I hate hartz and I wish there was something I could do to get this sh*tty god awful product away from anyone who thinks they are doing something to help their loved ones.
All it did to my poor guy was almost kill him or give him a seizure, make him disabled, and make him suffer.

My experience with the Hartz product was with using the Flea & Tick Drip Sticks. Why they’re not recalled is beyond me and I will never use anything but Frontline ever again. Within minutes of applying this to the back of their necks, in between their shoulders, they began scratching and shaking. The substance applied turned into a greasy oil glob on the dogs. I kept a close eye on them because I was concerned with the shaking but since it was summer, we thought maybe they were trying to release the loose hair off them. The next couple days got worse, at least with one of the dogs. Casper’s fur is not quite as dense as Ropers so the substance must have sunk into her skin quicker. By the third day, she began acting a bit strange. She couldn’t sit still, jumping from the couch to the floor and back, walking like she was drunk, stumbling. I decided to comb through the oil on her back, her fur began coming out in clumps. Then all hell broke loose. Forgetting to wash my hands, I rubbed my eyes. I awoke during the night, my eyes on fire, swollen and red. I jumped in the shower and flushed my eyes immediately then iced them. When I realized the cause, I woke my husband and looked at Casper, through the fur, her skin was as red as a chili pepper. Her and Roper cried when we touched them. That was it..at 3″00 am we took both dogs outside, in the lightening and pouring rain and washed them with Dawn Dishwashing soap to remove any trace of the flea and tick substance. That day, I was heartbroken to come on line and find all of this information after I put my dogs through such an ordeal. I found out that Petco pulled the Hartz line completely from their stores. It should be recalled, in addition to being pulled from all stores. Next time, I will do the research before applying anything to my beloved buddies.

We took in a stray cat, he is about 6 months old, he is the most lovable boy we have ever met… we called the vet and decided to have him neutered but he couldn’t see us for another week so i decided to buy over the counter flea/tick medication, Hartz Ultra Guard drops. I put the drops on him and within minutes he started acting different. He became lethargic and within 3 hours he was almost dead. I called the vet and they told me to wash the area immediately with DAWN dish soap and bring him in. The vet said he thought the cat was not going to live. He gave him an antedote of dexamethasone and atropine along with subcutaneous fluids twice. As I was explaining to the vet what happened, another patient’s owner stepped up to me and told me that she had all four of her cats die from this medication within hours of each other. we really thought he was a goner but thank God the vet knew what was going on with this medication because he had 3o+ previous cases. Some made it and some didn’t. Fortunately, Mitz is doing well today, 2 days later. It cost me $185.00 and almost Mitz’s life because of this POISON that is offered to the public. He is a very forgiving little man…..

My dog Rose Marie’s story.
West Highland White Terrier – female-18 months old

We applied Hartz 3 in 1 flea and tick drops on my Westie on August 5, 2010. I had previously used the same drops on her with no problems 30 days earlier.
That evening after applying the drops around 3:00 in the afternoon, I did not notice any reaction. At bed time, Rose sleeps with us and seemed restless to find a sleep spot on the bed. (Usually goes right to bed where ever you put her) Didn’t think anything of it until this morning she does not lift her head when we get out of bed. Just layed there flat on her side sleeping, I finish my shower and she has still not moved. I put her on the floor and she will not stand! OH MY GOD!!! She is paralyzed!!! I carry her downstairs and take her out to the back yard, she will not walk or stand, her rear and hind legs are paralyzed.
I remember that I put the flea drops on her the afternoon before.
I give her a bath in case the drops could be the cause of her problem. She is trembling slightly but I am not sure if that is from being cold from her bath or trembling from the reaction. Husband takes her to the vet and they think it could be a reaction to the flea drops.

As a precaution they x-ray both hind legs to check for injury (No injury)

They give her a charcoal treatment to reduce and absorb the toxins in her system. The vet gives her another bath to wash off the drops as much as possible. Vet calls Hartz to report the incident and to get direction from the company of what they recommend. They tell Vet to do what they are doing and she should be fine. Hartz did say it sounded like a overdose of the flea and Tick drops! We now have a case number for our incident.

It is 3:00 on Friday August 6th , 2010 – 24 hours after the flea drops where applied. Called the vet to check on Rose and no change, she is still trembling and they have her on diazepam to help her relax.

When we picked her up at 5:00 that evening she was responsive and walking. She threw up all evening and into the night and could not keep water or food down. On Saturday morning she threw up one time and has not since then. She seems to be completely back to normal even wanting to play with her toys.

Her vet said that the 48 hours would be the time frame to know if she would recover or not. Some dogs that have a reaction to this insecticide get kidney and liver damage and die. Others do like my Rose and recover fully.

It is like Russian roulette with these flea and tick drops, I have been giving all my pets over the counter flea and tick drops for years and have never had one have a bad reaction. I will not be taking that chance again.

I am so glad someone posted there story so I could find it when I had a problem with my westie. If I had not read others stories I might not have realized what was wrong with her and waited to long for her to be treated and risk permanent damage.

Products that can harm animals need to be off the market. Our vet said they are not even allowed to make this product anymore. Why can they still sell it? It is not only in the flea drops it is in all of there flea products, dips, shampoos etc…

When I started seeing my 5 yr old cat scratching around her chin and neck constantly, I noticed she had fleas. I bought flea Hartz shampoo used it 3 times still no change. Kept combing fleas out of her. Then my boyfriend and I cleaned the entire house and sprayed the house and garage to kill any fleas in the carpet. Then bought Hartz flea control the 3 months supply. After one use I noticed massive bumps on my cats. She must have had an allergic reaction to the medication because they were not there the day before. She seemed fine and content and scratching went away til I noticed a flea on her.. So I combed her and found 12 fleas on her! (shes an indoor cat, too). More then ever before. Now I have to take her to the vet to see if these bumps are harmful and buy better flea medication. Im so irritated and upset, my poor cat. BTW researching Hartz products now…have yet to find one good review!!! >:(

I am 17 years old and had my cat for 15 years and slept with her every night so you could imagine the loss I experienced from using this ****ING PRODUCT. Two nights ago we dipped my cat; we had used the dip before and she had a small reaction but we didn’t think anything of it. She cried for an hour but that’s normal after we bath her. She kept crying at my bedroom door so I opened it to let her in. She normally comes running in but instead she was just laying there. I knew it wasn’t normal so I got my parents, and I immediately started crying because I knew my cat well enough to know this wasn’t right. She tried to walk but ran into my door. We picked her up and took her downstairs and washed her off with Suave Shampoo and warm water thinking she was in pain with her skin. As she laid there, she began to stare off into space and rarely blinked. It was like she was brain dead, and if she was going to wind up dead this is what I would want so she wouldn’t have to suffer anymore. She had two minor seizures and a couple of hours later she finally passed away. It’s sad she died, but even more sad that it was an unneccessary cause. Old age is one thing, but this? WTF. NO WARNING AT ALL. WHY IS THIS **** ON THE MARKET. IM SO SAD BUT PISSED THE **** OFF.

OK, this is probably the hardest thing i think i have ever had to go through. Back in March Me and my girlfriend went to get us a new addition to the family. My Uncle knew a Husky breeder and we were off to find our new family member. We literally spent all day looking through all 6 puppies before we figured out that we wanted our Luna Belle. She was the runt and of course had her problems ill be it minor, which was a bladder infection. We took her to our local VCA Animal hospital and they took great care of her. that was the only problem we have encountered here until recently when we went out to the store because she had fleas and got Hartz brand Flea dip! Directly after applying (by specification no less and ensuring that i kept her face dry and out of the water) she wasn’t acting right but not so terribly off that we could notice. See the problem was it was right before bed and around 9 p.m. she gets sleepy. (DAY 1)The next morning she wasn’t moving, barely eating and drinking and we rushed her directly to the VCA again. We brought the Flea dip with us which the VCA had to throw into the BIOHAZARD CONTAINMENT BOX!!!! They washed her 3 times to try and get all of the “product” off and we took her back home after her getting checked out. (DAY 2) She had started coming around a little better and eating better, but she still wasn’t moving around. Sleeping most of the day away, which is something our vet said may happen. Per our vet “she may be a little lethargic for the next 24 to 48 hours”. We have been watching and she has had issues walking on her back paws. Trying to keep them straight and not putting much weight on them. Night of day 2 we make her get up and walk around. she looks so scrawny and not well kept. Waiting to see how day 3 will go…. Any advice would be great, but we are still taking her back to the vet today for another evaluation. I believe she may have had a seizure and that is why she isn’t walking well.
