On 9/16 my cat had her 1st litter of kittens. She had 5, but the runt of the litter died 2 days later. On 10/22 one of the 3 kittens we had left started acting strange(whining, not nursing, real lethargic). My sister suggested maybe getting a bottle and some pet formula, so she’d atleast get some sort of nutrition. On 10/24 we woke up to find the kitten acting a little better(moving around, light back in her eyes, etc). So I went to wal-mart and bought a bottle w 2 cans of the hartz kitten formula. I came home, sterilized the bottle, and we tried to feed it to her. We didn’t get much into her… within 5 minutes of eating, what little bit she did, she went down heal FAST!! About 15-20 minutes later she died in my arms after seizing!! I thought nothing of the formula. I fed it to my cat, because it says that you can give it to nursing cats. This morning we woke to find that the only boy of the litter was acting strange(mewing loudly/painfully, limp like he couldn’t move, labored breathing, etc). At 3:10am he started mewing this extremely loud and painful sounding mew. I walked into my bedroom to see him try to sit up, only to fall over. At 3:15 he died in my arms!!! I hope to God that my cat and the other 2 kittens will be ok!!! Earlier today I bought the hartz ultraguard flea/tick drops for both my cats and dogs. I was a little worried about the way in which the dogs drops are applied, so I asked my aunt if she had used them before and if they were safe. She told me she doesn’t use hartz, because her vet told her never to use that brand and that I should look up reviews for it. So that is what I did. Not only have I found that the hartz milk replacement I bought is probably the cause of the kittens I’m losing for mo reason, but then found that the drops I had already applied, to 2 out 3 of my dogs and all 3 of my cats, were killing animals as well!!! Needless to say I ran around frantically scrubbing my animals down with baby wipes to get it off of them!!! I hope and pray I got it soon enough that it won’t harm them!! Upon thinking about it… the perfectly healthy pomeranian that went all weak/lethargic, wouldn’t eat/drink, was throwing up, and unltimately DIED… was given HARTZ worm tablets a few days to a week before that!!! Why in the hell are they able to sell this crap in stores if this is what it’s doing to the animals?!?!? I will NEVER use hartz ANYTHING again!!!!

Our two cats had fleas so I bought Hartz Ultra Guard. That was the biggest mistake the next both of our healthycats were sick. First our cat started throwing up so I put him outside on the front porch to see what was going on. He got away from me and got under our wrap around porch. Normally after a few minutes I can bribe him to come out with something. This time was different so I got a flashlight and started looking. He was panting like a dog and foaming at the mouth. He was not able to walk to meormy kids which was unusual. My two kids and I tore part of our porch apart to drag him out. I rushed him to an emergency vet at midnight. $300dollars later we brought him home. The next morning when I found him he was hidingunder a bed I had to pull him out and he felt hot so I took him to another vet. He had a fever of 105 so they gave him sub Q fluids which he had also had the night before. This happened Friday and Saturday and here it is Monday and our poor Toby will not eat or drink I dont know what to do I am going to call the vet as soon as they open but I cannot afford to keep taking him to a vet for something that should have made him feel better instead of so sick. If I had known I would have never used this product on my cats. Luckily the other did not get as sick as Toby
Update on Toby Sept.28,2012
Toby had experienced a stroke and kidney failure and was no longer able to eat or drink anything. We had to make the hardest decision in our lives today and had him put to sleep. Toby suffered up to the very end and I could not watch him suffer anymore. He was taken to the vet again Monday because he was throwing up white foam it was almost nonstop. They kept him on IV fluids and plenty of meds until I got the call this morning that he only had a 20% chance of living. Hartz should have to be punished for what they have put Toby and my family through. My 12 and 14 year olds should have never had to see there precious cat this sick.. Now we are all mourning the death of our cat ): PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT IT KILLS THE HEALTHIEST OF PETS!!

Bio Guard is a supposedly gentle shampoo for cats & dogs that will not wash off spot on treatments ( we use frontline plus) We gave our 1 1/2 yr old cat a bath with it and within hours he was so sick I thought he was going to die. He started with drooling then just got VERY weak & VERY unresponsive. He vomited & was not eating (still isn’t) or drinking. He is now trying to drink but not taking in hardly anything at all. I gave him a bath in Dawn after speaking with a vet asistant. He said NEVER use anything but Dawn dish liquid on a cat. I have thrown the bottle of shampoo away & am thankful I hadn’t used it on my 6 1/2 yr old boxer. Not sure if our kitty is gonna get better or not but we are praying that he does. I just wanted to bring this BIO GUARD to everyone’s attention as well.
I purchased Hartz Ultra Guard Pro for my large mixed breed dog, Ginger and my cats, Louie and Sophie last week on July 16, 2012. I know I didn’t apply it right away; I must have waited a couple of days or the weekend before applying this product but I noticed a day or two after applying it that Ginger was limping and seemed like she just did not feel good. She’s been very lethargic, intermittent coughing like kennel cough, vomited once, limping like she can hardly move, and she seems very unsteady on her feet, and it seemed as though she had lost her appetite although she was still eating but in small amounts. She is still drinking water, but not as much as it seemed like she should be drinking. This evening I came upon this website Hartzvictims.org after doing a search online; plus I didn’t really start putting the pieces together until today while I was working from home (July 24). I thought she had sprained her ankle or something so I tried giving her an Advil tablet with food, but as soon as it wore off, she was back to limping really badly and even seemed unsteady in many ways almost like she was having hip problems or something. When I first did my search online with her symptoms (coughing, limping, unsteadiness, vomiting, etc) it looked like she might have been poisoned. Tonight, July 24 after researching the Hartz Ultra Guard Pro product that I purchased, I was SHOCKED to read that so many other people had experienced the same or similar issues with their animals. I can’t believe they run commercials for this product on TV but the first red flag for me should have been what I read on the back of the box, “Environmental Hazards: This product is toxic to fish.” Immediately I took my dog outside and did exactly what Hartzvictims.org recommended which was washing her with Dawn where the product was applied. I scrubbed her twice because she has a really thick coat and it repels water like a Labradors coat.
This is unbelievable!!! I’ve been typing my post and literally I toweled dried her off about an hour ago. Ginger came to the back door and wanted to come back inside. As I was letting her in, I noticed she was not limping and she seemed to have perked up! …Also she just ate a whole bowl of dog food! I will never use their products EVER again!!! Clearly Ginger’s thick fur must have given her some protection against this awful product! I’ll have to wait and see how she is the rest of the week and determine if we should go to the Vet. I never imagined that anything could cause such an adverse reaction to an animal. And thank God I never applied it to my cats…I can only imagine the reaction they would have had since they are smaller animals. Hartz should be sued for their poisonous products!!
Have you just used a HARTZ Product and realized something was wrong. You just looked up the product and found this website and are horrified of what you possibly just did to your beloved pet. That is what happened to me. Here is a step by step process of what you should do. Saved my dogs life!
1) Immediately wash and scrub the area the product was applied with Dawn dish soap. Dawn will cut the grease and remove the oily product better than any other soap. Wash pet once concentrating on the area. Dry. Then bathe the entire animal with Dawn and dry with a new towel. If your pet feels greasy or don’t feel like you got the product off wash and repeat, always drying with a new towel until you feel you have it all off. * The longer the product is on the worse it is because it is seeping into their blood stream.
2) Remove any pet beds, blankets, bedding, clothes, collars etc. that may have product residue on them to prevent contamination.
3) Call your vet immediately. Explain the product you use and the symptoms. Ex: is the problem on the outside skin irrations or the inside convulsions, lathargic, unresponsive, hyper, breath smells really bad (unusual foal odor from mouth and snout is a sign of pets becoming acidic, leads to kidney failure)
4) Push your pet to drink lots of water. If you can’t get them to drink try to get them to eat wet/canned food. It has a high moisture content. You can also mix it with some water so they are getting more fluids. You want to try and flush the system. This product causes kidney failure so pushing fluids is a must.
5) Keep a detailed log of the symptoms and times. Keep all the product information you used.
6) Do not leave your pet unattended and follow all vet orders.
I used to be a vet tech. I can still go back to that career, but I left to pursue a different career.
I worked at several veterinary practices, and at each one there were cats dying from Hartz flea medication. We saw it on a regular basis. This was from 2000-2005. We always warned clients of the dangers. Many died, some survived. But the owners would accuse us of trying to sell other products for profit. That was simply not the case. Cats came in several times a month after being treated with Hartz flea products. We bathed them and put them on fluids, and we kept them for a few days to monitor them. They all had symptoms of poisoning.
As a vet tech and as the “mom” of two cats, I would NEVER use any Hartz products on them. I don’t even allow them to have that brand of cat toys. I just do not trust the company. If your cat has fleas, it’s worth it to spend a little more money on something that works and is trusted by veterinarians. My cats’ lives and health are important to me. It’s worth the extra cost.
Hartz flea collars are no better, as I have seen cats have severe reactions to them as well. Plus, they simply do not work.
There are other brands of kitten formula that work just fine, but again, I have seen Hartz kitten formula kill kittens within 24-36 hours of being fed the first bottle. Don’t allow your kitten to become a victim. If you have an orphaned kitten, finding a surrogate is best, but if that is not an option, use a brand other than Hartz.
Remember, I have been in veterinary clinics and have witnessed the horror that comes from using Hartz brand products. It’s just not worth the risk. I agree that Hartz products should be pulled from store shelves. Nobody needs to lose any more beloved pets because of Hartz. It’s not a quick and peaceful death. It’s painful and slow.
I have used Hartz flea and tick drops on my 15 year old cat since we are in Texas. It was the last dropper in the box, Almost immediately after applying it my cat started to twitch. I figured it was because the oil was spreading. A few hours later I noticed that she was having problems walking, wasn’t drinking, and clinging to me like glue. I took her downstairs and washed her with dawn dish soap, and we went to bed. By morning she looked horrible. I gave her another dawn bath and started to do some research to find out what is wrong with her. I came across this site and became sick. On day two I had to syringe feed her water, 1 cc at a time. I also gave her baby food to try to get her to eat something. We are currently on day three and she has started urinating/having diarrhea on herself. She is now being play penned because I am afraid she will hurt herself. I called my vet and they said there is nothing they could do but wait it out. I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. Does anyone know how long until these symptoms will stop? (redness on the back, lethargic, trouble walking/weak, twitching, heavy breathing, incontinence, and restlessness)
As it is flea/tick season I went out and purchased two Hartz products which I thought would protect my pet. Unfortunately, rather than protecting it caused him harm. I arrived home from work on Friday and noticed chunks of white hair all over my apartment. I immediately found him and checked him out. To my surprise who would have thought that the Flea collar burned his hair off!!
Thank god, I immediately removed the collar off of him. I than returned the Hartz product back at the store which I purchased it from. The store personnel say that they have never had any other customers have this issue. I have called and left a detailed message with Hartz and Pet Value head office regarding the product and the damage it has caused. Some people may think its silly to be heart broken, but I love my pet, my stomach is truly turned and i feel so bad for him. He probably thinks I put that darn thing on him to punish him
In doing research on this product over the weekend there been tons of customers who have had the same thing happen to them going back to 2000. In addition, my vet says that they have had many cases come in regarding Hartz Flea/tick products burning the hair and skin on cats and dogs. I truly cant believe that this product could still be on the shelves or the active chemical is not banned yet. Many of the pet owners stated that Hartz continuously places the blame on the owners for improper use of the product. Very Sad ..Isn’t there something we can do to get this known chemical banned? Is anyone looking out for us and our pets?
