This came in via email:

I have a 5 year old yellow lab who started having seizures 4 years ago. I took him to the vet, had every test done and left with them telling me some dogs, especially labs just have seizures. He was occasionally having them, once every month or less. They aren’t full seizures because he knows when Im there and where I am and tried to come to me, but can’t control his body. His body stiffens, he foams, shakes and sometimes pees. Its heartbreaking to watch, but after 4 years I had gotten used to the fact that I just had a dog with epilepsy.

Now last night my 4 year old white german shepherd awoke me at 4 am having a seizure. I thought what are the odds I have two dogs that have seizures so I started to look at what I have been doing. I have moved all over many states so I ruled out chemicals or something they were getting into from home and such. There were three consistent things: Purina Dog Chow, Milkbone treats, and Hartz flea meds and shampoo. I wash them once every two months or more. The flea meds, when in Florida because they are a huge problem year round, I gave them some every 3-5 weeks. Now in Michigan I didn’t all winter and did about 6 weeks ago. Unlike other peoples stories, mine dont have seizures right after usage. This time it was 6 weeks after using.

Have you heard anything about delayed sickness or seizures? And after reading all the negative stories, I obviously scrubbed them to the best of my ability and am immediately stopping the use of ANY Hartz products. My next question is what do I do now? Ive been poisoning my dogs for years. Have you heard of long time health problems or do you think I’ll be ok by stopping the usage?

Other than the seizures both my dogs eat and drink healthy, get more than enough exercise and are healthy weight. The only negative thing is the occasional seizures that now are apparently affecting bot my dogs. I know you aren’t a vet, but I need guidance. I feel terrible, my dogs are my kids.

Google serves ads based on the density of those key words. You can read more about how Google’s ad serving works here.

Google allows me to filter competitive ads. For years I made sure no ads would direct a reader to Hartz.com.

This story came in via email from Marina:

“I didn’t know where to write, but I would like to share a story of my own. I have two cats at home and needed a flea protection for them. So I went to the store and bought over the counter flea medication “Sergeant’s Gold” for my cats. I applied it on both cats following the instructions. The same day they were acting strange: shaking heads, salivating and foaming out of the mouth and became very lethargic. I kept a close eye on them. The next morning my one cat could not even get up on his paws, so I went online to see information on adverse reactions. Sergeant’s web site recommended washing pet with dish detergent to wash off the medication which I did right away. My one cat got significantly better after a bath. The other one got very sick and started seizuring and throwing up everywhere, so I took one cat to emergency clinic, where he received fluids and was monitored for the next couple hours. Doctor said to give him rest and keep an eye on him for the next 24 hours, which I did. After that we had a follow up visit to the vet on Thursday and they did the same thing. My cat never got better. That bath didn’t help him at all. Other than the bath the company couldn’t offer better help. On Sunday morning we ended up taking him to the emergency clinic again. They put him on IV fluids and did a blood work that showed up that his kidneys were shutting down. We kept him in the hospital throughout the day where he passed away in my arms on Sunday night from renal failure. He was just over one year old, perfectly healthy cat. I am writing this to warn all other pet owners that “Flea medication can harm or kill your pet” (the box does not state that). I did some research about this product online and found out that this was not an isolated incident. Consumers Report website stated hundreds of cases like that. I am very surprised that this product is still on the shelves of our markets and it is EPA approved!!! If this is not an animal cruelty, then what is it? The most upsetting part of it is we as consumers by buying this product keeping it on the shelves and poisoning our pets at the same time.

I hope you would review this letter and post some sort of warning on your web site or make a news line, something. It is very hard to tragically lose your loved ones either it is a family member or a pet. If necessary I will testify against this product and company if needed. We need to take this stuff off the shelves before any other innocent animal dies. “

“I don’t want my name or info published but I am very much in favor of what you are doing here and I thought you should know that Hartz has launched a new permethrin based product that is extremely toxic to cats. It is called Vectra 3D and it is sold through DVM’s. The umbrella company that they are marketing it under is called Summit Vet Pharm, but if you “google patent search” the main ingredients, you will see that it is a Hartz product. As a pet parent, I was very upset that they would try to do an underhanded approach to get their bad reputation skirted.

The story below was sent via email by Chelsea:

A little background: I have always been a dog lover. Unfortunately my boyfriend is severely allergic to dogs, and after 6 years of searching for the perfect hypoallergenic addition to our family we found Napoleon.

Last week, after finding a tick on Napoleon (age 8 months) I purchased Hartz Ultra Guard. I was sure to purchase the correct product (with regard to pet weight) and determined that Napoleon is old enough for product use. My sister has used this product in the past and I assumed it was safe. After applying the product on Saturday, and being careful to follow the directions, Napoleon began to refuse food. Sunday he began vomiting, which is not unusual due to his sensitive stomach. Monday the vomiting continued and I made an appointment with our vet (Doctor #1 at our clinic). At out Tuesday appointment, our vet decided to take x-rays to rule out that he had swallowed a foreign body. At this time I mentioned that I had applied this product, but no one seemed to think this was the cause of his illness. The x-rays appeared to show a “material like” foreign body that would have to be removed surgically. After several hours of IV fluids, Napoleon was sent home and scheduled for a return visit the next day. On Wednesday, a second round of x-rays (same clinic, different doctor) showed that there was a suspicious area of the stomach, that may or may not be a foreign body. I was given the option to go ahead with the surgery, or wait for a mobile ultrasound company to confirm the presence of a foreign body. I certainly wasn’t about to allow them to cut into Napoleon without being positive it was necessary. 7 hours later, the ultrasound team found no evidence of a foreign body. What they found was substantially worse. Napoleon’s stomach lining, intestines and colon were severely inflamed. This inflammation was so severe, it mimicked a foreign body on the x-ray. At this point the vet (doctor #3) suggested that this could be due to chemical exposure or a viral illness. I reiterated that the only chemical exposure that he had had was the Hartz product. The clinic suggested I treat the symptoms with previously prescribed antibiotics, and anti-naseua medication. He was sent home with the IV catheter in his arm for a second night, incase he required further IV fluids the following day. Upon arriving home, Napoleon was lethargic and seemed to be wilting before my eyes. My previously rambunctious yorkie-poo puppy had turned into a sad shadow of himself. He began drooling, and repeatedly shaking his head. Having no experience with severely ill dogs, I did not recognize this as seizure activity. Early Thursday morning I attempted to administer an anti-naseua pill. Napoleon became stressed and began violently shaking his head, drooling, and smacking his lips. Thankfully this time I realized what was happening and did my best to calm him while gathering our things to rush to the vet. Upon arrival at the clinic we met with Doctor #2 who asked if he had been exposed to any chemicals. I reiterated that the only chemicals he had come in contact with were in the Hartz product. She suggested we run blood tests for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (“tick fever”) and Valley Fever (a common illness in Arizona). Both of these illnesses can cause seizure activity in dogs. She also agreed to do some research on the Veterinary Internet Network regarding this product. Napoleon remained at the clinic on IV for 12 hours on Thursday. Again he returned home that evening with the IV catheter still attached. Today (Friday) I took him back for a check up. He was lifting his head more, and showed more interest in the car ride, but was nowhere near his bouncy, energetic self. Doctor #2 met with us again and stated that she is confident that this is the result of exposure to the Hartz medication. She also stated that she was shocked at the number of incidences reported regarding this and similar medications. Further, she stated that she was unaware of the dangers of this product, or the EPA review. Bloodwork for Tick Fever and Valley Fever came back negative, solidifying her diagnosis. Since Napoleon appeared a bit better, the IV catheter was removed and he was allowed to spend the day at home. Unfortunately as the day progresses, he has become more lethargic and is still refusing to eat, bringing the total to 6 days without oral nutrition. He has had another seizure (milder than yesterday’s) and continues to drool excessively. Tomorrow will be day 5 at the vet, for another round of IVs and monitoring. If he continues refusing food, he will have gone an entire week without eating.

The current total of our vet bills is $865.32 and we expect that to increase tomorrow with the replacement of the IV line and the several hours he will be required to “rest” at the vet. This, in addition to the gasoline expense, recommended prescription diet, and time spent at the vet has added up to a very expensive tick treatment. However, the worst expense is the physical pain this ordeal has caused our little guy. I am horrified at the idea that we could have agreed to an unnecessary surgery only to find this terrible inflammation. I am shocked that this product is still on the market. Until consumers are successful in getting this product pulled from store shelves, it is imperative that Veterinarians are made aware of the signs/symptoms of phenothrin toxicity and learn to treat it quickly and appropriately.

Hopefully our story has a happy ending. We are praying that Napoleon makes a full recovery and is able to live a long and happy life. Regardless of the result of his fight with this illness, I will certainly beginning a fight of my own to have these products banned.

Thank you for allowing me to share my story. My prayers are with other families struggling with the illness or loss of a pet due to this horrible product.

I received the following via email from HartzVictim, Dylan:

“Last night we were just hanging out at the house when I noticed what I thought was a small scab on one of our dog’s ears. When I was able to get a closer look I saw that it was actually a very small tick. We proceeded to remove it and inspect the rest of our animals. After all of that we decided that we should go to the store to get some kind of repellant for them, we are new to Arkansas and never had to do this in Colorado.

We found the Hartz products at our local store and proceeded to buy them because we didn’t know any better. After we got home we used the Harz UltraGuard plus on all of our dogs and our cat. Within one hour our cat started to breathe really heavy and it sounded like it was taking a lot of effort for him to do so. Ten minutes latter he started to foam at the mouth and started to act strangely, running around spastically, twitching a lot, shaking and started to vomit up foamy liquids. We immediately went to the internet and found your site. After reading a few of the stories we grabbed the cat and proceed to give him a good scrubbing in the kitchen sink. After we got done with his bath and got him mostly dry he seemed to be doing better immediately, no more foaming at the mouth, no twitching, just some heavy breathing. Upon awaking this morning there were a few spots where he had gotten sick throughout the night, but he does seem to be doing quite better this morning.

We are glad that we found this website and that we are not the only ones out there that experienced this problem. The dogs seemed to be ok and tolerated the medication better, but regardless they also received baths. I can’t believe that so many people experience issues with this product and its still on the shelves, WITHOUT ANY KIND OF WARNING! I wasn’t even able to find out common side effects for their products on the website, what a F~**ing joke. I will let everyone I know not to use these products, so that their animals don’t have to go though the pain like my cat did. Thank you for this website.”

From our friends at GreenPaws.org:
Green Paws and the Natural Resources Defense Council are prompting consumers to appeal directly to the Presidents and CEOs of big box retailers like PETCO and PetSmart to remove flea and tick collars containing the harmful chemicals tetrachlorvinphos and propoxur. This attempt to directly contact retailers is designed to add greater support for our formal petition with the EPA to ban tetrachlorvinphos and propoxur from pet products as well as our lawsuit filed in California against 16 major retailers who carry flea and tick products which are in violation of California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, which prohibits businesses from knowingly exposing consumers without proper warning to any chemical “known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive harm”.

Earlier this month, the Center received a five-page “open letter” from Hartz Mountain Corporation alleging that our 12/16/08 story, Pets and Pesticides: Let’s Be Careful Out There, contained inaccurate and misleading information about spot on flea and tick treatments for pets.

Marta Draper, vice president of research and development for Hartz, contends in her letter that Hartz spot on products are as safe or safer than the more expensive products sold by veterinarians. And she asserts that the Center made pyrethroid-based spot on treatments seem especially dangerous by misquoting — or quoting only selectively — from an article published in The Veterinary Journal in June 2008.

We’ve provided the full text of Ms. Draper’s letter: We respectfully disagree, though, with Ms. Draper’s contentions, and would like to take this opportunity to respond.

Ms. Draper says we incorrectly characterized The Veterinary Journal piece by saying in our story that “dermal exposure by application to the skin or coat is the most common route of toxic exposure, potentially causing hyperexcitability, tremors, profuse salivation, and seizures.” We believe we accurately reflected The Veterinary Journal piece; that piece said that “dermal exposure by the skin and hair coat is the most frequent route that leads to intoxication” and then went on to say that signs of pyrethroid intoxication include “salivation, hyperexcitability, hyperaesthesia, tremor and seizures, dyspnoea, prostration.” Ms. Draper also labels as a “gross mischaracterization” our contention that pyrethroid toxicity targets nerve and muscles in pets. That contention relied on The Veterinary Journal piece, which stated that “Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids affect the voltage-dependant chloride channels found in the brain, nerves, muscle tissue, and salivary glands.”

Ms. Draper also asserts in her letter that we left out important information that was included in The Veterinary Journal report. We disagree. Listed below are the alleged omissions she cites, and quotes from our story:

    * Pyrethrin and pyrethroid pesticides are less toxic than the organophosphate products they replaced. Our story says organophosphate products were replaced by pyrethroids, “which are generally thought to be less acutely toxic.”
* In most cases misuse of these pesticides by pet owners is what causes bad reactions. Our story says, “The authors of the study in The Veterinary Journal agree that misuse of pyrethroid products is often the cause of illnesses…”
* The best way to avoid problems is by educating pet owners. Our story directly quotes The Veterinary Journal piece, in stating that,“ ‘The best way to avoid serious problems is by educating pet owners to use products strictly according to label directions.’ ”
* Veterinarians need to advise clients to read directions before using products. Again, we quoted directly from The Veterinary Journal story, in saying that “‘Veterinarians must advise clients using flea care products to read and follow label instructions completely before applying them on or around their pets.’”
* Products labeled for dogs should never be used on cats. Our story says, product labels contain “multiple warnings not to it use on cats,” and later, “Common misapplications include applying more powerful dog products to cats.”

This is a story that I’m re-publishing, which was featured on WSJ.com today:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124329165300152331.html

Not long after Jennifer Croezen applied flea and tick drops to the back of her Chihuahau, Saki, earlier this month, the dog’s back began to turn red.

The next day, Saki seemed tired and lost her appetite. Ms. Croezen, a 26-year-old medical assistant, took her dog to the vet the following morning, where Saki was treated for chemical burns on her back and diagnosed with a dangerous anemia. “It makes me really mad,” Ms. Croezen says. “If I would have known it could have done this to my dog, I would have never put it on her.”

Central Life Sciences, manufacturer of the Bio Spot brand Spot On Flea & Tick Control used on Saki, says its product isn’t responsible for the anemia. “Skin sensitivity could have been exacerbated by the presence of severe anemia which led to blistering of the skin,” said Laura Petree, manager of technical services at Central Life Sciences, in a statement.

Some pet-owners are taking action because they believe their animals had reactions to fleas treatments applied directly to the pet’s back.

An increasing number of pet owners are reporting what they believe to be harmful side effects from over-the-counter and prescription flea and tick treatments. The Environmental Protection Agency, which regulates topical pet treatments, says the number of reported incidents stemming from so-called spot-on flea and tick treatments — drops that are applied directly to a pet’s skin, usually on the back — increased 53% to 44,263 in 2008 from the previous year. As a result of the increase, the EPA said last month that it is intensifying an evaluation of spot-on products.

Product manufacturers are required by law to pass along reported incidents to the EPA. In its advisory on the topic, the agency said it is evaluating all spot-on products and posted a list of those it is examining. The list includes products by major manufacturers such as Sumitomo Corp.’s Hartz Mountain Corp., Central Life Sciences, Bayer AG, maker of Advantage, and Merial Ltd., a joint venture between Merck & Co. and Sanofi-Aventis SA, that makes Frontline products. EPA advises consumers who buy treatments from any of these companies to read the label closely and apply the products as instructed.

Incidents reported to EPA range from skin irritation to seizures and sometimes death, the agency says. The reason for the rise in incidents is unclear, the agency says, adding that it is investigating the size of the market relative to the increase in reported incidents. “We are investigating and having discussions to learn more about the problem and will take action when we determine that it is warranted,” EPA spokesman Dale Kemery said in an email.

Spot-on treatments generally kill fleas and ticks by affecting their nervous systems, and some products contain chemicals that keep flea eggs from developing. Veterinarians consider them more effective than other treatments, such as shampoos and sprays, and say their use has increased in recent years. “The market has moved dramatically toward spot-ons in the last 10 to 15 years,” says Steven Hansen, a veterinary toxicologist and director of the Animal Poison Control Center at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Manufacturers are required to submit safety and efficacy studies of their flea and tick products to the EPA before they go on the market. The EPA says safety standards are the same for brands sold at pet retailers — such as Hartz and Bio Spot — as they are for those that are sold at veterinary offices, like Frontline and Advantage.

Consumers who believe their pets have had reactions to spot-on treatments are increasingly questioning the products’ safety. “I will never put flea and tick medication ever again on my dog,” Ms. Croezen says. She says Saki is doing better, but is still taking medication for her anemia.

As spot-on treatments have grown in popularity in the past decade, online forums like HartzVictims.org and BioSpotVictims.org have popped up for people who say their pets have experienced side effects following the use of flea and tick products. The Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group, has a site called Greenpaws.org that advocates ways to take care of fleas without chemical treatment, such as using flea combs and washing a pet’s bedding once a week.

Dr. Hansen of the ASPCA says that in general, most spot-on treatments have good safety records. He says that if used appropriately, “in healthy animals we are not going to have very many reactions.” Veterinarians and manufacturers say that most of the problems they see are cases where the treatment has been misused.

Manufacturers emphasize that their treatments are safe only for the pet profile listed on the box. Product labels specify the species, age requirements and weight range of the animal to which the treatment should be applied.

One common misuse that veterinarians see is that consumers apply flea treatments meant for dogs on cats by mistake. A review of toxicity studies published in the Veterinary Journal last year concludes that cats are “most often affected by inappropriate application of the spot-on” treatments, though misuse can occur in other species.

For example, the chemical permethrin, found in spot-on treatments such as Bayer’s K9 Advantix, is safe for dogs but not for cats. In cats, “it causes their nervous system to go into overdrive,” says Mark Stickney, director of general surgery services at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “They can develop seizures.” Dr. Stickney says he sees such cases once or twice a month in the emergency room.

Also, certain animals may be more susceptible to side effects than others, veterinarians say. If an animal is pregnant, heavily flea infested or has an illness, for instance, the owner should consult with a veterinarian before applying flea treatments.

Dr. Hansen of the ASPCA advises against applying flea powders and sprays in addition to a spot-on treatment because chemicals in different products could interact with each other. “You probably do not want to double up on these,” he says.

Consumers whose pets experience unusual reactions following treatment should wash the animal with soap, unless the product label specifies otherwise, and immediately contact a veterinarian, the EPA says. They should also contact the manufacturer via the number on the product label. Manufacturers advise saving the box so that consumers can describe exactly what product was used. Companies like Central Life Sciences and Hartz say that they review complaints and decide whether to cover veterinary bills on a case-by-case basis.

The chemical burn on Saki’s back, which appeared soon after the dog received its spot-on treatment, continues to heal.

Sometimes pet owners and manufacturers disagree about whether the animal had a reaction to the flea treatment or if the pet had a pre-existing condition.

Richard Parsons, 64, of La Quinta, Calif., applied Hartz Advanced Care 4-in-1 Flea & Tick Drops for Dogs on his Scottish terrier Duffy in May 2007 and dropped the dog off at a kennel the next morning. He says he received a call two days later from the kennel saying that Duffy was experiencing seizures and vomiting. Duffy died the next day.

“It was a torturous, tragic, painful death,” says Mr. Parsons, who believes the death resulted from the Hartz treatment. He says he believes the product should be taken off the market.

Hartz reached a different conclusion after investigating the case. The company says Duffy’s illness and death was directly related to elevated sodium levels in the blood that resulted from an undiagnosed, pre-existing disease. The company says its spot-on products are safe. “You can’t get a product to market without showing a high level of safety and efficacy,” says Bill Ecker, Hartz’s chief executive.

Lawsuit Seeks to Protect Consumers from Toxic Pet Products

New NRDC Analysis Reveals Flea Collars Create Toxic Chemical Residues on Pet Fur that Threaten Human Health

SAN FRANCISCO (April 23, 2009) – The Natural Resources Defense Council has filed a lawsuit in California against major pet product retailers and manufacturers for illegally selling pet products containing a known cancer-causing chemical called propoxur without proper warning labels.

In new scientific analysis also released today, NRDC found high levels of propoxur and tetrachlorvinphos (TCVP), another carcinogenic neurotoxin common in household pet products, on pet fur after use of ordinary flea collars. NRDC is also petitioning the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), calling for the removal of these chemicals from pet products.

“Just because a product is sold in stores does not mean it is safe,” said Dr. Gina Solomon, NRDC senior scientist and physician. “Under California law, consumers have a right to know if a flea control product exposes them to health risks before they buy it.”

NRDC filed its lawsuit in California Superior Court in Alameda County against 16 retailers and manufacturers including Petsmart, PetCo, and Petstore.com, for failing to comply with California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act, known as Proposition 65, which prohibits businesses from knowingly exposing consumers without proper warning to any chemical “known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive harm.” These companies have failed to caution consumers about exposure to propoxur from the use of their products, which should have been labeled with a warning as of August 11, 2007. Proposition 65 provides for penalties of up to $2,500 for every violation.

NRDC’s new report, Poison on Pets II, found flea collars containing TCVP and propoxur pose serious neurological and cancer risks. These chemical-laden flea collars expose humans to highly hazardous chemicals that can damage the brain and nervous system and cause cancer. Children are particularly at risk from these pesticides because their neurological and metabolic systems are still developing. They are also more likely than adults to put their hands in their mouths after petting an animal, leading to the ingestion of hazardous residues.

Poison on Pets II tested the fur of dogs and cats wearing flea collars to measure the invisible pesticide residues left on the pets from these collars. This analysis, which was the first study of propoxur residues on pet’s fur, found that propoxur levels are so high in some products that they pose a cancer risk in children that is up to 1,000 times higher than the EPA’s acceptable levels, and up to 500 times higher for adults. The study also showed that after three days, 100 percent of the pets wearing collars containing propoxur and 50 percent of the pets wearing collars with TCVP posed a significant neurological risk to toddlers. Testing also revealed that unsafe levels of pesticide residue remain on a dog’s or cat’s fur two weeks after a collar is put on an animal. Families with multiple pets that wear flea collars have even greater exposure risks.

The EPA has never compiled data on pesticide levels found on a pet’s fur after use of flea collars. NRDC’s testing and careful calculations reveal that the EPA’s decision to leave these products on the market may create a significant health risk to pet owners, most notably young children.

The availability of many effective and safer alternatives for flea and tick control makes the continued use of these pesticides an unnecessary risk. NRDC’s groundbreaking 2000 report “Poison on Pets” led to the ban of six other pesticides in pet products, but products containing TCVP and propoxur are still on store shelves.

“The EPA’s evaluation of these chemicals was dangerously flawed and underestimates the risks to children,” said Miriam Rotkin-Ellman, NRDC scientist. “There is no reason to use carcinogens and neurotoxins to fight fleas and ticks when there are other safer and effective treatments available. The EPA should not allow these toxic chemicals in pet products.”

NRDC’s recommendations for safe flea and tick control include the frequent use of a flea comb, regular bathing of pets, as well as vacuuming and washing of their bedding regularly. If chemical-based flea control is necessary, the safest options often containing the least toxic chemicals are those dispensed by pill. Visit NRDC’s free online flea and tick product guide for pet owners that ranks more than 125 products, categorizing products by the level of their potential health threat, at NRDC’s consumer-oriented Green Paws website: www.greenpaws.org.

Apologies for the delay in posts recently. Below is an email and photos from Lacy, whose miniature pinschers suffered the wrath of Hartz poisonings.

Hi Josh,

Last July and August I posted a few things on your website about the hartz flea and tick drops killing our MinPin, Milsie Baby, and causing a lot of harm to our two other dogs, Gauge and Frosty Paws. I am sending you some pictures of all of this. I hate that it has taken me so long to get these to you. Most of the pictures are of Gauge, the two close-ups of fur-loss is Frosty Paws.

After only one treatment, we lost Milsie one week later, left Gauge with a scar down her back and Frosty itching so badly she pulled out her hair and developed skin infections. They saw three vets at the emergency clinic and two more at their regular vet (and I spoke to a 3rd there, also), totaling around a thousand dollars, yet, none of them were willing to give us a statement.

I am so glad that at least one person in the world has kept up the fight, and I thank you for taking the time to do so.

I also sent you a email through your web site about a hartz ad being in Martha Stewart Living magazine. I got an error msg., so I do not know if you got it or not. I have already sent them an email through their ‘contact us’ link, but think that others should, too.

Thanks again,
Lacy

Cute Overload (CO) is serving Hartz ads. I find it completely appalling and asinine that a popular, animal and pet-oriented website would knowingly promote a company that sells products that kill pets. Alert reader and former CO visitor, Erin, sent me an email over the weekend to inform me of these ads. Erin and I have both contacted Meg at CO to no avail. I wrote a very friendly, formal letter urging Meg to visit HartzVictims.org and to reconsider serving Hartz ads on her site. I also proposed a link exchange partnership so we could drive traffic to one another’s websites. I have yet to hear back from Meg.

Erin has since been banned from posting on CO. Her comments on CO in regards to Hartz ads were also retracted. Erin started a website she cleverly calls Sad Overload. Erin also made me aware of the Junepath website where Junepath is obviously appalled that CO is serving up Hartz ads in the posts Cute Overload/Hartz, Re – Cute Overload and Cute Overload x3.

So it’s here that I urge you to contact Meg at CO and ask her to cease the Hartz campaign. Meg’s email address is: meg [at] cutelabs.com

Also, do what Erin and I have done and post comments on CO, warning others of the dangers of Hartz products and request to have the Hartz ad campaign pulled.

UPDATE: Cute Overload deleted my comments
