Do NOT BUY Hartz Kitten Milk Replacement (KMR)

I have 5 abandoned baby kittens. My neighbor feeds stray cats who reproduce, but they give birth under my shed. There was a batch a few months ago that I returned to my neighbor. The mother refused to touch them, even though we did not physically touch them with our skin. According to him, they ‘starved to death over several days’ and he did not lift a finger to save them. Then a new batch was left under my shed, howling for food. This time, we had to take them in.

We put them on PetAG KMR and they were doing ok as a group. But I lost my job and PetCo was charging 25 dollars a can for this stuff. I found Hartz KMR at Walmart for 10 and thought, “Hey! Save money!”. I fed 1.5 cans to these kittens. Within a week, my favorite one, Jesse, started acting like she had suffered a stroke. She would sit dormant for minutes, staring into space, then jerking off into a random direction, crashing into whatever. I fed her a bit of sugar water, as advised by the Internet, and then a touch of canned food. She recovered. The next day, she ate nearly half a bottle of Hartz KMR. An hour or so later, she consumed nearly another quarter of a bottle. (Small kitten milk bottles).

By 5 PM that afternoon, she was a wreck. She howled in pain. Her stomach was bloated. She would lurch from absolute zombie-ness to lurching, panicked movements. I could not help her. I started researching her state. I could find no disease or condition that matched this. Not ‘kitty stroke’ or ‘epilepsy’ or …..nothing matched. Then I thought about the food change and I started investigating. Everything I found by Googling “Hartz KMR” DID match. We were convinced we found the issue.

The next day, we went immediately to PetCO and got PetAG’s KMR Step 2 (they’re old enough for it now) and came home and fed them. The change was almost instant. They now bound about the floor, battling and playing. Alert and attentive. Jesse is a normal kitten again. I am CONVINCED Hartz was the culprit.

PLEASE! If you are ever in the position to have to nurse kittens yourself, do NOT use Hartz. It is a crap product that causes horrible constipation, stomach buildup and what I am convinced is eventual brain death in a kitten. PLEASE DO NOT USE HARTZ KMR. PetAG is much better because it is milk based. Even Similac is better than Hartz KMR. But I wanted to share my tale because this site helped me to diagnose what was wrong with Jesse and there was really nothing wrong with her except the poision I was unintentionally feeding her.
I have no relationship with PetAG, they are just the only KMR alternative I have ever found. If you do find a KMR, please make sure it is milk based and not whey based, or the kitten will not be able to pass stool. THAT is my point. It will become bloated and pained and completely freak out. Jesse is quite content now and the other 4 are doing just fine as well. Thank you for your attention.

Hello, my dog died a couple of days after I put the flea and tick medicine on him.  He was dehydrated and was throwing up blood, was not eating or drinking.  I took him to the vet but it was too late and he passed away at home.  He was a healthy husky and Hartz flea and tick medicine took him down in a couple of days.  I am trying to make Hartz pay for what their product has done and get it removed from all product shelves. I  am in the process of getting a lawsuit going against Hartz and I need another person to come forward and contact my lawyer to help make Hartz pay.   If you live in Indiana and had a pet die from any type of Hartz medication, please please give Gregory M. Egleston a call.  His number is 212-683-3400 or email him at [email protected].  I need help and if you can and will help, please contact Gregory.  The more people that come forward and contact him, the better our chances are to make Hartz pay.  Our pets should not die from products we buy to help them.  Please if you want to make Hartz pay for killing your pet, give Gregory a call.  Thank you very much

Hartz “Love your dog” shampoo

About 15 years ago, my mother and I were out shopping for a safe shampoo for our new 8 month old Golden Retriever puppy. We were careful not to get anything with a flea or tick repellant in it so as not to expose him to such neurotoxins at a young age. We chose a shampoo with a happy looking golden retriever puppy on the front that was intended for puppies called Hartz “Love your dog” shampoo. We washed him that afternoon and the next morning he had two seizures. We rushed him in to the vet and, after mentioning that he’d gotten a bath the day before, the FIRST question out our vet’s mouth was, “Was it a Hartz product?”

Long story short, Hartz poisoned our dog. He continued to have seizures for the rest of his life. Without medication, they were daily. With medication (4 phenobarbs a day), he “only” had them about once a month. He died younger than he should’ve as a result of the strain on his heart from having had so many seizures in his lifetime.

I now tell every single person I meet at a pet store or a vet office what happened to my dog, but I know it’s not enough because Hartz is still poisoning animals. Thank you for making this website – I’ll do my best to publicize it.

R.I.P Moo moo

I really wish I did my home work when I recently got a 6 week old kitten that I named Moo moo… It started a couple of weeks ago when my cousin showed me pictures of her 6 week old kittens who were going to be taken to a farm if they didnt find homes. Me being the animal lover that I am took one that looked liked a cow and fell in love at first sight. The day i picked her up I noticed she had fleas and knew they had to go in a short time as I have 4 dogs,2 cats and 2 birds already so my aunt bathed her in baby shampoo three times but she still had lots more that needed to go. I bonded with her on my 3 hour drive home on thanksgiving monday and knew she was going to be a great addition to my family. Tuesday I went to Pet Value to look for flea shampoo after I didnt find any close to her age I decided to go to Walmart to look. I found Sergeants flea shampoo for 8 weeks and up and thought she is almost 7 weeks so will that 1 week difference be a big deal…probably not so I bought it and went home to bath her. It seemed to kill alot of fleas but I wasnt sure if they were all gone so on wednesday I did another bath with the shampoo and sure enough there was the fleas. I was asked why not take her to the vet and have them do a flea treatment but I replied its to expensive so I’m going to bath her myself. On friday I did yet another bath and once again found more fleas so I thought ok sunday should be the last bath she will need and once and for all these fleas will be gone!!! Saturday came and she was her normal self running around, meowing, eating, biting and doing her running pounce. We played that night until she fell asleep on my pillow that was on the couch so I carried her and the pillow to my bed where she woke up and started to play again until I fell asleep. I woke up sunday looking at her thinking how cute she looked sleeping with her mouth open so i rolled over and went back to sleep until my husband came in breakfast. He entered the room and picked Moo moo up and thats when we seen the blood on the bed, pillow, side of her face and in her mouth, we started to clean out her mouth to make sure nothing was blocking her throat and she  looked like she was sleeping but was making little noises so we rushed her to the vet. When we got there we were asked if we wanted them to perform cpr as she was almost gone at that point, she was put on iv,oxygen and a heating pad as her temp was low and we were told they didnt have anything to relax her muscles so she wouldnt jerk while breathing so we would have to take her to the emergency clinic. If the vet left the iv lines in the emerg would charge us a min of 400 dollars for 12 hours of care and the vet office cost would be 250 or we could do home care which could take longer for her to come around but it was do able. The doctor left at 3pm and were to stay there until 4pm with her so we could take her off the oxygen to see how she would be at home and if anything happened the vet would come back. We took her off the oxygen for a bit during the bath they gave her and put her back on the heating pad to get her temp back up but we put it back on until 3:3o. Moo moo started to move her head and her one front paw and I was getting so excited thinking she was getting better when i felt hwer back paw moving,my husband went to inform them she was having another seizure and when they came back and checked her she had stopped breathing and called the vet back as her heart beat was dropping as well and before they got off the phone with the doctor she was gone. I picked her up to hold her for the last time when we seen more blood had come out of her mouth as she bite her tongue again. After paying the $388 bill I thought this could have all been prevented had I taken her to get a flea treatment.  I was suppose to protect her yet I put this shampoo on her not knowing any of this could happen as it didnt say its toxic to animals  and its the worst feeling in the world. I know I didnt make this product toxic to kittens but it doesnt take the guilt or pain away, losing a pet this way has put me into depression and I will relive this pain so that i can tell anybody and everybody my story if it prevent another death. Hartz and Sergeants should be ashamed of themselves and put warning labels on their products!!!

Hartz risked the life of my 7 month cat, Huey.

While at work one day, my fiancée spotted this poor baby kitten cold, wet, and sick. His immediate instant was to grab it. I said it was okay and we immediately took it to the vet to get tested and checked out. Healthy considering his circumstances, his major thing was fleas. The vet gave him Advantage and a capstar blue pill to take instant affect. Since we already had our beloved baby boy Huey at the house, I wanted to take the extra step and get him some flea treatment, in the off chance some were able to survive. We headed to Target to find that Hartz was the ONLY option at the store. Knowing that Hartz makes several animal products, I thought nothing of it and purchased and applied it to Huey. We did this pretty late in the evening so we headed to bed shortly after. Around 4am Huey jumped into bed and couldn’t sit still for anything and he is typically snuggled in for the night at this point. Not to mention he kept scratching at the application point and was literally trying to chew off the foot in which he scratched the area with. Instantly, we flew out of bed, bathed him, called the emergency vet, and bathed him again… Learning that the flea medicine could cause SEIZURES. Seriously? We tried to lay back down but he kept twitching so we headed to the emergency vet, where I learned that Hartz is the ONLY flea medicine that does this where Advantage and Frontline will not. He stated he was in emergency for 10 years and saw this his first year and was convinced than that Hartz would never survive selling products that could kill animals. He is still stunned that it is still in the market. I’ve missed days of work too paranoid to leave Huey alone, fearing I’ll come home to find that his little body had an adverse reaction. He is about to get another bath after I posted this. And now I have 2 treatments of Hartz Ultra Flea and Tick drops just sitting in my purse because I’m too afraid to throw it away, in fear that some poor animal will find it and digest it and seal their fate. I will not settle until this company pays for what it’s done to people and their pets. The worst part is the guilt I feel realizing I hurt my baby in an attempt to protect him. How is this fair?

2 family members; Gone!

We used a hartz spray on 2 of our beloved cats, Brady and Star.. now mind you we have 4 cats, but we only sprayed these 2, becuase they seemed to have gotten the case of the fleas, the worst.. In trying to help our animals.. we hurt them.. killed them.. NO, we didnt, HARTZ DID. We followed the directions on the bottle to a T.. both seemed to be doing okay, and about 3 days later i realized they were hiding.. which these 2, did not normally do.. so calling for them through out the house, we searched and looked for them, and when we finally found them, Brady looked AWFUL. W gave Brady a bath, using just reg. ivory soap.. and star we wiped down as much as we could. The reason we got these products, was because i Called the Emergency hospital, and the person on the other end basically laughed at me, and told me we had to take care of the fleas ourselves, becuase ” we don’t do stuff that miniscule here”… Well, 2 days later we rushed him to the Emergency Vets, because he was skin and bone, and was urinating on himself, and breathing very hard, he was nostalgic and was notn reacting to us at all.. and we had to put him down! 2 days after that I refused to go to the emergency hospital, and the vets had to put Star Down, becuase she was having the same exact symptoms. ! We are DEVASTATED! …WE FEEL RESPONSIBLE, HEART BROKEN, ASHAMED… I wish I had read the warnings before acting.. but i honestly thought we were helping them. We miss them very much and are still very upset since this was just 4 days ago, and one right after the other.., Oh, and after talking to a Hartz Rep, they said they had never heard of things like this happening, yet told us to send them our vet bills, and are sending us farms to fill out right away….

We Almost Lost Oscar

This past weekend I was in the grocery store and saw the Hartz flea control so I thought I would try it. Although I usually get my flea control from the vet, I figured if it is sold in the store it should be safe… Several hours after putting it on the back of my cats neck, I witnessed him having a grand mul seizure. This lasted for appropriately one minute. We rushed him to the animal emergency clinic where they kept him over night. He was put on antibiotics to flush the poison out of his system and Valium to stop the seizures and tremors. Although a scary experience, we were lucky that Oscar came through it OK.
I have since found out from my vet that you can put 12 times the amount of the flea products that you can buy from your veterinarian such as Advantage onto you animal and it still would not be as harmful as one dose of Hartz.
Why is this toxic stuff still being manufactured?

Animals are “things,” not people

I always get the email or phone call asking, “Why won’t anyone put a stop to Hartz? Why isn’t there a lawsuit?” Invariably we all think, “If this kind of poisoning were happening to humans, the FDA and media would be all over this and the problem would cease to exist.”

The sad truth is that our pets are “property.” They’re objects with no rights, feelings or emotions. I was reminded of this this afternoon when I received an email from my child’s school. The school is adding a service dog to it’s staff and we’ve all been told that:

The service dog is not a pet when the dog is at school; the courts have ruled that an ASDA dog is a “highly trained and well socialized indispensable durable medical device for the child.”

The key word here is “device”. The courts consider animals devices. Things. Objects.

What are your thoughts on this? Am I wrong or off base?
