Hartz shampoo

One and a half to two weeks ago I had used Hartz Ultra Guard Rid Flea & Tick shampoo on my dog Rossco, after the night passed he began vomiting white and yellow foamy bile and developed anorexia, this went on for about 1 ½ to 2 weeks. I began to worry but had made no connection to the bathes with Hartz shampoo. On the night of 2/15/11 I had given him another bath, unaware of the products possible dangers, the next morning (2/16/11) he woke with very low energy and blotchy rashes all over his underside, neck and ears along with some constipation. That day I took him to the Animal Hospital of Irvine where I met with Dr. Anne Lai. She ran X-rays, blood work and fecal exams but could not figure out what was wrong with him so she sent me to an emergency clinic, Advanced Critical Care & Internal Medicine, where they ran an ultrasound and more blood work. Once the results came in they came to the conclusion that he was having an allergic reaction, though they could not confirm that it was caused by Hartz shampoo. Based on the information that the nurse gave me about the history of this product, her experience with other cases in which some cats and dogs have actually died from severe allergic reactions to this product, and with everything I have read on your website has led me to the conclusion that Hartz Rid Flea & Tick shampoo is to blame. I am a student with a part time, minimum wage job and after his medical bills where paid I was left completely broke. I would like to have the company reimburse me for all the unnecessary tests, which could have been avoided if Hartz had a warning label with possible symptoms of a severe allergic reaction. To think that I was using a product thought to be safe. My poor dog, Rossco, has been very sick and gave me and my family quite a scare. Thankfully he appears to be on the mend after taking his prescribed medication and ceasing use of the shampoo, sadly that’s not the case for others. So I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to deal with this company and how I might be able to get reimbursed, because as I said earlier this could have all been avoided if they had a proper warning of (severe) allergic reaction and a list of possible symptoms.

seriously, why doesn’t anyone listen to me?

I gave my kitties hartz squeeze on flea treatment about 6 or seven months ago, worst mistake I ever made. sage, the oldest (5 years) turned really jumpy and skittish, (which is weird for his personality.) while the youngest, Godai, was growling, flicking his paws like he stepped in water, and generally, irritable. I called the hotline on the back to see if these were normal side effects, and they told me to give him a bath, and if he didn’t improve, to seek medical attention.

both my boys were fine after a couple weeks, and baths. I saw my friend use the hartz brand on her cat and told her she shouldn’t use it after a vet said it could cause death, but my friend says her cat doesn’t have an issue with it. A week later her cat had a bald spot and was extremely irritable. It strikes me as very odd this company has ZERO accountability of their product, and tried to treat the situation of my pets reactions as them being allergic to the product, when they never have a reaction with good brands like frontline and revolution.

I went to the hartz website and wrote them a very lengthy letter pleading with them to take this product off the shelves till it was safe for use. However, I don’t think they’ll get back to me, seeing as on the page to write them it says: “if your pet needs medical attention contact your vet immediately.” After I submitted, it said: “We value your feedback. We make every effort to respond to each email we receive. Due to the high volume of messages Hartz receives, however, yours may not receive a personal reply.” If this were baby formula, or shampoo, it would have been recalled, taken off the shelves already…I challenge them at hartz to use it on THEIR pets.

DO NOT USE ZODIAC OR HARTZ ON YOUR PETS!!!

As I type this message I am holding my Cat that almost died about an hour ago, because of ZODIAC flea spray. I have 2 Cats and only one had a major issue with in 30 mins after putting it on him. The other one took an hour or more but he had very little issue, but I still washed it off with Dawn dish soap and warm water, 5 times. I call the vet and after washing my cat that was about to died, I had to induce vomiting with salt, as he may have licked it. He became VERY disoriented and could not stand. When he would walk he would fall over. He even closed his eyes and stopped breathing while in my arms, for about a min and then started breathing again and opened his eyes. He is doing a lot better now! Vet is not open after hours and I have to wait until AM to take him in for a check up.

Many or years ago I used HARTZ and my other cat almost died. I only use ADAMS spray, but the store was out and have been for sometime now, so I thought I would use ZODIAC as I have never heard anything bad about it. ZODIAC and HARTZ should be removed and not allowed to be sold!!!

mini cooper

My year 1/2 old Papillon became very sick after using the sergeants gold flea and tick drops, he had scratching, uncontrollable full body twitching and heavy breathing. We brought him to an emergency vet at 11pm, they gave him benadryl which did not help!! He had a reverse reaction to the benadryl he did not sleep for 24 hrs. now he is finally starting to sleep !!! I feel responsible for putting my baby in such danger for not getting all the facts, but i know it is all them for selling such a dangerous and toxic product. This product should never be sold. I feel lucky to have him and I’m feel sad for all the the ones that died from this product.

My five kitties almost died

I used Sargeants Flea & Tick drops for dogs on my five kittys. I ran out of Advantage and thought this would be ok until I got to the vet. I split 2 doses between my five cats, what a HUGE MISTAKE. I applied small amounts to all of them around 7:00 PM, by 9:30 PM i noticed the smallest one had tremors, twitching, trouble walking and stayed in a crouched position not even laying, just crouched. I though she must have licked some of the medicine off her back some how so I tried to induce vomiting with proxide as suggested. That did not work but, I also bathed her again with dish soap to get the oil off her. I kept her in bed with me as she had labored shallow breathing. By midnight one of my other cats came in the room to lay but started having a full blown seizure and foaming at the mouth. At this point I realized there had to be something more serious than I thought. I rushed two of them to the Pet ER and they admitted both of them and proceeded to tell me that this is VERY COMMON with the product. I was told to go home and wash my other three cats with DAWN dish soap to get this off their skin and watch for signs of tremors, twitching, foaming of the mouth etc. I was able to wash two of them but the third cat was already out side for the night and could not locate him. Once I picked up the first two cats from the ER and brought them to my local pet hospital for continued support my other cat came home and was shaking, had tremors and some what lethargic. I rushed him to my local pet hospital with the other two for treatment. Two of them were released after being treated with IV fluids and sedation and the third one that had the seizure is still in critcal condition with inflamation of the brain. How can this product still be on the market with all the complications noted on the intranet. I wish I would have done some research on this before putting this on all five of my cats……

My puppy almost died today!

On Saturday I got a chihahua that is 6 months old and adorable named Socks. trying to be a good pet mom I got her the Hartz Ultra Guard drops for 4 – 15 pounds and I applied them on Saturday afternoon. Everything seemed fine until this morning Tuesday Feb. 1 when she became sick at her stomach and began vomiting. I thought she had parvo since her previous owner had not vaccinated her. Luckily she had a vet appointment for this afternoon and they agreed to let me bring her in early to observe her. Socks wound up having to stay all day and undergo several tests and the resulst showed that she had a reaction to the Hartz! I am so upset and of course there is no number to call to get refunded the ammount I paid and I believe that they should reimberse me for part of the vet bill since they were responsible . They need to be pulled off the market and how do we get the cost of our vet care back? No animal deserves to die or get sick as they are family members not dollar signs.
