Hartz Ultra Guard Plus flea and tick collar burned my cats neck : (

A few weeks ago I bought Hartz Ultra Guard Plus flea and tick collar for my cat.  It all started with some stray cats that have been roaming around my back porch. My cat for the first time in 5 years ended up with fleas.  So when I was  at the  grocery store I decided to get her a flea collar.  I placed it on her neck and about two weeks later I felt a clump of hair around her neck under the collar. I took it off her immediately to investigate.  She has a complete ring around neck now. She had been badly burned by the chemicals on the collar. Im so sick to my stomach. I cant believe that I have let this happen to her.  She is the sweetest thing ever. Her name is Atira, she has long silky black hair and is the reason I didnt notice the burn sooner.  Im afraid that the area is getting infected now. I have little money but I have to take her to the vet, the burn is bad. Hartz should pay for this…..but I know that wont happen.  Some people may think its silly to be heart broken, but I love her so much, my stomach is truly turned and i feel so bad for her.  She probably thinks I put that darn thing on her to punish her…its not fare. Im a single guy and she is all I have. She makes everyday that much better to  me.. I truly cant believe that a product could still be on the shelves or the active chemical is not banned yet. And to hear that Hartz continuously places the blame on the owners for improper use of the product. Very Sad…..Isnt there something we can do to get that know chemical banned? Is anyone looking out for us and our pets?

  1. You can’t contribute all of this to the maker of the collar, your cat may have allergies or sensitive skin. I get rashes that turn into open sores if I use Jergens soap.

  2. This reaction could have been much worse..many cats that end up with Hartz products end up in critical care at a vet clinic because they go into sezuires foaming at the mouth and quite often even die..the most cost effective solution is to get advantage in a large dog size (which is more expensive but will last you much longer) then ask your vet for some syrynges and you only use about 1/4 the dose in the vial per month so 1 dose can last you 4 months depending on the size of your cat, you will need to treat your cat for at least 4 months to break the flea life cycle. This is OFF LABLE USE but is done all the time by vets . Your local vet can tell you exactly how much to give. I do it with my own animals and its a very safe product, even if you give too much you will not cause problems. apply between ears (dont get in eyes) if you put it between the shoulders they can lick it then drool because it tastes bad. Good luck

  3. Absolutely terrible advice, Ms. Smith! According to the EPA’s evaluation of spot-on products, Advantage has been associated with adverse effects in cats and dogs. Using Advantage for large dogs and metering the dosage for cats is considered misuse. If an adverse reaction occurs as the result of misuse, the manufacturer will assume no responsibility for it.

  4. THIS STUFF NEED TO BE OFF THE SHELFS AND I DO MY BEST TO GET IT TAKEN OFF. I HAND OUT CARDS YOU CAN GET FROM THIS SITE TO EVERYONE I SEE AND TELL THEM ABOUT IT. ITS NOTHING BUT POISION!!!! IM A GROOMER AND I TELL EVERYONE ABOUT THIS STUPID PRODUCT. I EVEN GO TO WAL’MART AND PUT THE CARDS UP THERE WHERE HARTS IS. WE GOT TO GET TO WORD OUT THERE PEOPLE OR OUR PETS ARE GOING TO DIE!! I EVEN POST IT ON FACEBOOK. LETS GET THE WORD OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!

  5. i have to say it is horrible i have alot of animals and it has always been a battle with the hartz applications screw them suck on it im done!

  6. I used a bottle of cat flea drops on my 1 year old cat and her whole neck was burned. I don’t know what to do:'( I wish I didn’t use it Hartz should be shut down. I don’t want my cat to think I did it to hurt her:'( there is nothing I can do to take her pain away. Her fur is gone and her skin is like Leather in that spot an red. She has little bumps around the area :'( I don’t know what to do. I can’t believe they would sell a product like that!

  7. Courtney,

I feel bad that this has happened to your cat aswell. Hang in there and let your friends know about the Hartz and how to be cautious of flea and tick chemicals. My cat recovered from the burn and is doing great now. I did take her to the vet, she was given antibiotics and they shaved her hair away from the burned area. Her hair was getting stuck in the scabs as the burn crusted over…keeping the hair out of the burn is very important so it is really hard to avoid taking your cat to the vet. Lots of love

Hope things get better for you and your cat. If the burn is bad please try to go see a vet.

    peace 🙁
