Two days ago I started a regiment of Hartz Ultraguard ear mite treatment on my cat. She is now worse off then before. She is hiding and is acting bizarre. Has anyone had side effects from this medicine?

I am an attorney and I was smiling from ear to ear to hear of the 72 year old man representing himself against Hartz' lawyers. That is the justice system that I hope we still have. When I start feeling cynical, I need to read a story like this.

I used Hartz once and had a bad experience with my dog. I vowed to never touch it again. I"m just glad it did not make my dog as deathly ill as some I have read of here.

It seems pretty evident that something is very wrong wtih Hartz - not the consumers.

We had our tortious cat 9 years from a baby kitten. I bought the Hartz flea and tick treatment with 3 pea green vials. As soon as I put the strip from the head to hte tail she went into a crawling stance and would not stand up straight. I called her vet and he said to give her a bath with hopes it would come off and not harm her. It was too late it ultimately caused liver and kidney failure and after us administering IV treatments at home to hydrate her, she had to be put down. She was a companion to our son for nine years and he held her and cried for over two hours before the vet put her down. The Hartz company asked me to send the two unused vials to them so they could check them out, I even sent the empty one I had used on her. They sent a couple of hundred dollars to "help" with the vet bills. We weren't looking for money, we wanted our baby to survive but she didn't. She had went from a beautiful 22 pound cat to a very ill 9 pound cat in a few weeks.
We nees to boycot any place selling Hartz flea products and also everyone should post it on facebook and my space!!!

Thanks, Neema, we're all on the same side.

I would encourage you to contact Jacqueline Mottek when you get the opportunity. It will be time well spent.

Keep coming up with good ideas, and most importantly, ensure that action come from them.

Thanks for your commitment.

Dear Rich, thanks for sharing the passion and the excitement for this! It is truly inspiring. We need to consolidate these posts somehow for a mass mailing to the EPA. I wonder if Josh would consider on some changes in the website? For the very reason we got to talking about this, I feel we should have a forum format, where stickies could be posted and information can be shared and more importantly accessed promptly in case of an emergency.

It was my last day at work so I was not able to call Jacqueline today, unfortunately I will only be able to do so tomorrow.

I do feel it is time to give this blog more teeth than, well, a blog.

Thank you for accepting the smiley face on its face value rather than misconstruing it as a vicarious smirk ;)

Endearing you back

Dear Radheica,

I'm delighted you're going to call Jacqueline. I know it will be worth your time. And I'm also pleased with your suggestion regarding expediting adverse incidents directly from this site to the EPA. Believe me, the EPA would get a whole different look than what's provided by the product manufacturers who have a legal obligation to pass along to the EPA adverse event information reported to them by consumers/pet owners. They (along with the ASPCA/APCC) attempt to downplay the possibility of their products doing harm. Hartz, for example, has been fined in the past for failing to comply with accurate and timely reporting. You have a good idea and I'm glad you're following up on James' idea about contacting Clare Gesalman at the EPA.

Also, good point on the jibes. I'll try your suggestion. Thanks for the smiley face.

@ Dani : Ditto. I found her website, but I could not find any activity specific to Hartz that she might have initiated. If she had that is terrific, but it would be great if it were on her website. I will call her tomorrow and post my findings here.

@ Rich : "Why wouldn’t you simply respond to the posting left on February 15th by Jacqueline Mottek of Positive Legal?
If you’re looking for some help she’s pretty much handed it to you. What more could you ask for?" - we are used to being spoon-fed Rich, and you just enabled us :)

Since this website does not have stickies (as in a forum) and people don't log in everyday, posts are easily missed. People come here in a lot of mental distress. Its not that hard to point out a alternatives without taking jibes. Its possible. You should try it.

Taz and Radheica and others,

Why wouldn't you simply respond to the posting left on February 15th by Jacqueline Mottek of Positive Legal? She's reputable ("Google" her and you'll see she has excellent credentials and outstanding class action achievments), left her contact information--both email and telephone number--and has asked people harmed by the product manufacturers to contact her.

If you're looking for some help she's pretty much handed it to you. What more could you ask for? Here's her recent posting on this site:

I am a class action lawyer in the San Francisco area, investigating the toxicity of Hartz and Seargent's flea products and the possibility of filing a class action against the companies. I am very sorry for your loss and pain. Please contact me if you would like to talk about your experience and help us get these products off of the market. Thanks very much.

My Hamster,Chester, had died last year.
He was one years old, He was perfectly healthy days before his sickness, then I decided to try a new brand of Bedding for his cage, I stumbled across Hartz bedding, It was green and pine colored, I put the bedding in his cage, Then by the next day he was sneezing, losing alot of weight, He was also too weak to walk, and his eyes were crusted closed.
We decided to bring him to the vet, and she couldn't find the reason for his sickness.
This sickness continued for a few days more, He then passed away.

He was a Teddy Bear Hamster, With yellow fur. . .. I miss him!

We are closely monitoring our poisoned cat at this time after getting home from the vet. She had a bad reaction to the HARTZ flea control drops. They really need to put some explicit warning on their packaging as well as "possible side effects." I would love to sue the horrible company that continues to put this poisonous product on the shelf. Hartz better cross it's fingers and hope that my cat stays healthy or they'll have another lawsuit coming at them.
