Never!! Please, never ever use this product!
We have two beautiful healthy young dogs (4-5 yrs), with a pristine health record (until hartz of course). They get premium food – Timberwolf Organics, Acana, Origen, Blue (I mention this because poor diet is often associated with illness in your pawsy companions).
We had new neighbors with dogs move in a few weeks ago and my little one had started itching a bit. I was going to order frontline from petmeds and instead picked this up in a split second decision while walking out from Wallys. My logic being, “hey if it doesn’t work, I can still order the Frontline”. Plus it was priced at only $5.99
On Saturday evening, I showered the girls and applied this on my itchy one. The next day my dog started showing signs of minor epileptic shocks – yelping in her sleep…yes I do know about dog dreaming, but these dreams, if they were that, were, with shock, pain and disorientation. Since it was Sunday, our regular vet was unavailable. We had no idea how serious this was about to become! That night, convinced that she was having a series of bad dreams we made sure she slept close to us on the bed. The episodes continued that whole night, a couple of hours apart.
Next morning I noticed some swelling on her snout and one of her eyes. There was also a red spot on her belly. By that time we had read other peoples reviews on this product and were shocked that this poison is still put out for unsuspecting consumers!! Alarmed we called the local emergency care and described her symptoms. They urge us to rush her there. By the time we reached the hospital, my baby had gone into an anaphylactic shock. She had petechiae all over her abdomen and she was swollen all over!
She was hospitalized after she was stabilized with steroids, antihistamine and antibiotics. Our woes did not end there though. I can go into more details, but I feel it suffices to tell you all that after about four thousand dollars and a homeopathic detox program, we were finally able to get her close to normal. After about a month and a half today, she still takes some herbs and supplements to support and balance her messed up immune system.
Just ONE tube of the three doses!!
The amount of anguish and death related to this product far outweighs the justification of dogs who might be ‘flea free’. In the course of that week we must have met at least half a dozen vets who just shook their heads when I mentioned the Hartz product!! It has killed hundreds of cats apparently and is more fatal to their littler bodies (my dogs are about 65lbs each).
Please do not, do not buy this poison!!

Thanks Josh for having this site. I feel sad for, and my compassion goes out to every person and their pets on this forum.

Just had a hartz experience with our dog and thank god for this site. I called 5 vets and they all said the same thing.. It is poison and do not use it. I just washed her (With Swave because all I had was Hartz Products, now their trash) and am monitering her close over night. She was just not acting right and very skiddish ~ not herself and hiding under our daughters bed.
We the people need to shut them down for poisioning our pets. Boycott, word of mouth, etc… Do not stop this.. I am on board for a Class Action Lawsuit.. It has to be done so these crooks make no more money killing our family members. Its not right…

Steve I am so sorry to hear about your experience. Thank you for sharing it with us. I know there is a separate thread for the lawsuit somewhere on the forum. I think we need to really do something about this. I am guessing more people would find this website *after* an incident, which is unfortunate. I think we need to find a way to bring this issue to the forefront, where people see this before they buy and use this poison. Is anyone else thinking Oprah?

I certainly wish I would have did my research BEFORE I purchased Hartz Ultra Guard!! Now I’m getting a little nervous. I went out just this morning and purchased a 3-month supply of this to use on our little Chihuahua. For whatever reason I decided to look it up just now, and after reading all these horror stories, I’m scared to death of what this might do to our little Peanut. I just hope and pray he’s okay.

Hope, I will pray for your dog too. I am sorry I only saw your comment today and could not respond earlier. I am hoping Peanut is okay. In the meantime, please wash your little one with a good quality dishwashing liquid to take the poison off. Take him/her to the nearest emergency room at the first signs of an adverse reaction – don’t wait too long…Please do update us all here on the forum.

I just bathed my puppy today with Hartz Ultra Guard and she started having dandruff. She also had diarrhea and there was a little bit of blood in her stool, but other than that she was pretty normal like any other day. But I was shocked so I did some research afterwards, to learn that Hartz was poisonous to her health. Can anyone advise me on what actions to take now? I’m afraid it might get worse in the morning.

Even if it has been a few days, and she is normal, I would suggest you do a blood panel and put her on immunizing natural herbs for supporting her little system. The poor baby. This makes me soo MAD!!

I am so glad I came across this website. I was looking for something I could use on my 3-month old puppy. I just moved and was shocked to discover that the house had lots of ticks just right behind the front door. When I checked it out before, it was clean. Since I can’t just move right out, I was looking for a way to get rid of all the ticks and make sure she doesn’t get any. I saw the ad for Hartz and was going to give it a try. Good thing I also checked out some forums and got the link to this site. I am sooo not buying Hartz. I’ll also be telling my bestfriend to make sure she doesn’t get any Hartz products for her cute little terrier.

On saturday, we put hartz on our dog and today we noticed that she is acting a little different and not like herself. Now that i came across this website, I am so nervous that she is getting sick from it and I do not know what to do. I live in a smaller town I do not have an on-call vet after 5pm. So, hopefully she will be ok. Im just worried now. Thanks for everyone who posted things to warn others that did not know about this. Im sorry for everyone’s loses, concerns, mishaps, etc from the use of this awful medicine that should be pulled from the shelves.

I work in an emergency practice in San Antonio, and we see hartz poisoning WAY too much. As a matter of fact, one cat is on her way in now with increased aggresivness, neurologic symptoms, and hiding away from the owner. It’s such a horrible thing that so many people just don’t know the adverse affects of this “product”. I’ve never seen this site before, but I will definately pass it on! I’m so sorry for the loss or illness any loved one has gone through. It just makes me so mad to see!! My heart goes out to all owners, and friends of these beloved compainions. Thank you for this site!!
