I am terribly sorry this has happened to Max and you and your family. It is truly a tragedy. Hartz Mountain Corporation has a deplorable safety record over the years. They aren’t the only manufacturer with an unacceptable safety record, but since your problem resulted from Hartz’s products you should know that their appalling history goes back to the late ’80’s and ’90’s when their product, Blockade, was pulled from the market because of an unacceptably high number of pet injuries and deaths, including human deaths. It was later reintroduced and again had serious safety problems. Hartz was cited and fined for not accurately and promptly forwarding consumer reports to the EPA as all manufacturers (and registrants) are required to do by federal law. In the early 2000’s they were required to make numberous package labeling and directions revisions on both their cat and dog insecticide ingredient products. In 2005 the EPA, probably the most lax oversight agency in the federal government, forced Hartz to terminate their cat and kitten products, issuing a Cancellation Order against Hartz’s products containing pesticide ingredients. The number of cat and kitten injuries and deaths was stunning and even the EPA could no longer ignore it. Please also report this incident to the National Pesticide Information Center, at 1-800-858-7378. They maintain a database of pesticide-related illnesses for the EPA. The EPA uses this database to determine if dangerous pesticide products require specific action in terms of safety requirements, including up to removal from the market. Don’t let Hartz get away with the devastation they are causing any longer. They count on victims’ owners taking no action or simply complaining for a week or two and then going away. Please take the time to report this terrible tragedy to the NPIC. I’m very sorry this has happened to you and Max. It’s terrible…particularly since it’s avoidable if Hartz and the EPA were truly concerned about pets and pet owners.

I am so sorry for you and your family. Reading this and watching the video has brought me to tears. I have used Hartz products off and on for the past year…but I can honestly say that I will never purchase another product and I will tell EVERYONE I know NOT to use them ever again. This has to stop.

I am so sorry for your loss and what you had to go through. I have just gone through the exact thing with my dog. I truly wish that I had found this before I ever put the stuff on her. I tried to contact the company, but didnt get anywhere with that, I was just transferred to about 6 different people. I watched my dog go from an active, healthy and playful baby to lifeless, pitiful and eventually gone all in a matter of days. I am so angry that these people can get by with doing this. My dogs are part of my family and the guilt is almost unbearable. My question is if there is anything I can do, a different avenue to take to make them hear me, and so maybe this doesnt have to keep on happening.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry for you and your family. I am in tears over the loss of your sweet dog. He was so good with your girls during his bath. I can see he was a wonderful member of your family. I have used these products in the past but will NEVER use them again and will recommend to all my friends and family against them as well. This is heartbraking, sickening, and just plain wrong!! Our love goes out to you and yours, may the Lord bless you.

Someone just posted a question about Hartz Flea and Tick Shampoo on Yahoo! Answers and another told them to come to this site and see your story specifically.

The pain you and your family are going through has to be unbearable and I am so sorry you and your young children had to go through it.

I have never used Hartz products and I never will nor will I ever let anyone I know use them. They need to be brought to justice for the tragedy your family went through.

R.I.P Max, it is obvious you were very well loved and are greatly missed.

I am so sorry about your loss of Max I use to use Hartz products myself but had stopped because i always thought it was an allergic reaction but maybe it was actually more then that. I am definatly going to pass the word around up here in Nh and try to even get places to start pulling it off the shelves but not sure how to go about that step but I wish you all the best with your future

I am very sorry for the loss of the animals and the trauma their loss has caused. On July 4th we were blessed with thte most adorable healthy pit bull puppies. On july 12 I had my husband get some flea and tick drops to treat the mother and on july 14th I went out to check on things and they looked to be normal the little white one had just opened its eyes that morning and when we got back less than 10 hours later all three puppies were dead.I want this company out of business and the murderous products of the shelves. I feel wal mart and any other stores who allow these products to sit on their shelves are just as guilty.I know that no amount of money will bring my babies back but if I can save the lif\ves of others pets at least their death had a purpose. I am contacting our governor here in Oregonand maybe we all band together this tragedy will not be a part of our futures but will remain as our past.I can be contacted at [email protected]. please email me with any storys you have that I can use to get this product of the market I had one gentleman tel me he had used it on their pregnant dog it killed her the 6 puppies and because his younger brother had played with the female dog he was put in the hospital for at least 2 1/2 months from the poison that was on the dog. please contact me soon

I will never again use Hartz product. I have recently purchased the flea drops for my two dogs. They are fine, it was applied over three weeks ago. But after reading these terrible stories I will not EVER buy their products. I am so sorry for your loss and every other family and animal that has suffered.

Hartz killed our little pomeranian. We put the flea and tick powder on here and she was fine. The next morning we found her dead. My husband and I are absolutely devestated..I’m sorry for your loss. Our little girl was only 9 months old.

Dear Melanie,

I am terribly sorry this has happened to you and your husband, and your Pomerian. Please take the time to report this incident to the National Pesticide Information Center, at 1-800-858-7378. They maintain a database of pesticide-related illnesses for the EPA. Don’t let Hartz get away with the devastation they are causing. They count on victims’ owners taking no action or simply complaining for a week or two and then going away. Please also take the time to report this terrible tragedy to Hartz. They will not like hearing from you because they are obligated by federal law to forward this information to the EPA. As I mentioned, they have been fined in the past for not doing so. The fact that they won’t like hearing from you will make your call that much more gratifying. They can be reached at 1-800-275-1414.

I’m very sorry this has happened to you and your little Pomerian. It’s terrible…particularly since it’s avoidable if Hartz and the EPA were truly concerned about pets and pet owners.

I used the Sergeants 3 in 1 today on both of my shih-tzu’s, one is 2 the other is a baby, 8 mos old. They’ve been cryin and sick ever since I put the drops on them. Why in heavens name are they still selling this poison? Something must be done NOW. If my dogs die, there will be hell to pay and I’m not backing down.

I video taped the dogs to show their actions, they have never acted like this before.

Please pray for my babies.

They will pay dearly!

This is sicking, I put Hartz flea and tick powder on my 4 month old puppy. For two days he has been vomiting, not eating and this morning my wife took him to the vet because he can not even lift his head. I don’t know about anyone else but I’d rather deal with the fleas. This has to stop how can they sell a product over the counter that has such devastating effects, or even the chance of such devastating effects. Simply outrageous this company profits from killing family pets.

Thank you for bringing this forward–as painful as it must be. Hartz has one of the worst safety records in the industry. Their products containing the pesticide neurotoxin phenothrin have accounted for a significant number of the adverse incidents reported to the EPA over the years. Their appalling safety record goes back to the ’80’s and ’90’s with their product, Blockade, which was pulled from the market because of an unacceptable number of animal injuries and deaths. They have been forced by the EPA to make numerous labeling revisions and they have been cited and fined for not promptly and accurately reporting adverse incidents to the EPA. Unfortunately, these steps have not slowed injuries and deaths to pets. Their cat and kitten products were terminated in 2006 when the EPA issued a Cancellation Order against Hartz because of their deplorable safety record. Please–when you get the opportunity (and I know you are hurting right now)–take one important step to help yourself and other pets and pet owners. Please take the time to report your incident to the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC). This organization works with the EPA to compile the database of incidents and statistics that will be analyzed and used as a basis for corrective action. The NPIC can be reached at 1-800-858-7378. They are very professional, courteous and efficient. This is a critical step in the public forcing the EPA–one of the most lax oversight agencies in the federal government–to do the right thing and get these neuro-toxin pesticide ingredients out of the marketplace. Also, please call Hartz Mountain and report this incident to them. They WILL NOT be happy to hear from you, but they–-like all the manufacturers–-have an obligation under federal law to forward your report to the EPA. As I mentioned, Hartz Mountain has been cited and fined for not properly and promptly reporting these incidents in the past. Put the pressure on Hartz by giving them the details and forcing them to report to the EPA. Also, they should be asked to reimburse your medical expenses…don’t hesitate to ask for this. Do NOT report the incident to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center. They have a business relationship with the product manufacturers and their veterinarian staff will not agree that these products “used properly” will cause injury or worse. They will not report the incident to the product manufacturer and this relieves the manufacturers of any legal obligation to inform the EPA–in other words, it minimizes the problems reported to the government. Finally, almost all veterinarians have seen first hand the devastation that these products are causing–they understand the pain and suffering. They truly care and can give you good medical advice. Thank you again; I’m so very sorry for what has happened. It’s reprehensible that Hartz, BioSpot, Sergeant’s, Vectra, Vectra 3D and others continue to injure and kill thousands of pets–it’s absolutely reprehensible. However, if you truly want to make a difference and contribute to the end of these horrific products please follow the reporting steps–it will make a difference. All the best to you.

On November 30th 2010 I gave my 1yr old black Lab a Hartz Chew ‘n Clean Dental Duo. After chewing on the toy for only ten minuets he began chocking and vomited up pieces of the toy At least one piece lodged in his stomach, and it caused a serious blockage. He died on December 14 2010 at the Blue Oak Veternary Hospital, in Jackson, California.
