After treating my German Shepherd mix with Hartz Advanced Care 3 in 1 Flea & Tick Drops she started trembling, and no energy about 2 days after the treatment. We’ve had vomiting and a sleepless night and now another symptom – she will not/ can not? have a bowel movement. With lots of gentle encourgement I can get her outside to urinate but she will not even try to have a bowel movement. Now she’s getting very tender around the abdomen. I’m having some difficulty navigating around the website to read the symptoms that others have listed. She also has some labored breathing but that seems to come and go. She’s 11 years old and seemed to be in very good health prior to the treatment.
While Seargents may not be made by Hartz, its just as horrible. I used Seargents Gold flea treatment on my Boston Terrier last summer and it was a horrible experience. An hour or so after I applied the oil to his back he started freaking out and rubbing himself on anything and everything he could. He whined, growled, and was just flat-out miserable. He couldnt sit still, just shook and tried scratching himself on everything. It was late at night, so I just put him in the bath and bathed him with his regular shampoo, which didnt help. I called the company who said to bathe him in Dawn dishsoap because the stuff is oil-based. After three Dawn baths he calmed down a little and could actually sit still for a few minutes. He was practically begging me to bathe him again, he sat in the tub and barked at me until I would give him another bath which is very unlike him. Normally I have to chase him down (he hides) to give him a bath, and thanks to this horrible product he was begging to be bathed. Luckily once the stuff had washed off completely he was ok but the company who makes this crap should be ashamed of themselves. I found an all-natural (NO chemicals whatsoever) spray for fleas/ticks that works wonders. I will never use such a nasty product on any animal ever again, and am completely disgusted with myself for subjecting my dog to such a thing.
My niece had just adopted two kittens from the Humane Society. She quickly realized they had come with fleas. She is so allergic she did not want to get chemicals from the vet. She called me immediatly at my health food store to see if I had anything that would work. We carried an enzymed based Pet Wash from Safe Solutions Inc. She said that as soon as they applied the peppermint shampoo to the kittens the fleas were jumping off the kittens, you could see them all over the bath tub. So she just washed them down the drain. No more fleas.
I put Hartz Ultra Gaurd Flea & Tick gaurd, and i googled up Hartz to see if anything bad showed up, through Yahoo Answers, i found this site. Afraid for my cats life i washed her but only with head and shoulder, as i ran out of cat soap, will she be ok?
I put Sentry Pro XFC on my 2 Chihuahua mixed dogs at 9:00pm last night. At 12:00am my larger pup woke me up and would not stop walking on me until I physically got up to see what was wrong. Turns out he was excessively foaming at the mouth. A few minutes later the smaller of the two woke up and started licking her feet and then foaming at the mouth. Thats when I realized they were having an allergic reaction to Sargeants Sentry Pro XFC flea medication (poison). So I woke up and bathed both of them twice with oatmeal shampoo and then gave them half of a Benadryl pill. The smaller pup continued to lick her paws until my sheets were soaked but finally fell asleep. I awoke the next morning finding that the smaller dogs hind legs were moving funny when she walked (which is a severe side effect) so I took them both straight to the vet as a precaution.
The vet said that if I had not washed the poison off of the dogs it probably would have been fatal! I felt so horrible and really frustrated that this type of medication or any Hartz or Sargeant (made by Hartz) products are sold.
I am hoping that both dogs will be ok. Since it has only been a day, I have to wait it out and see. My advice to all of you is to purchase your flea medicine from you Veterinarian.
The Hartz and Sargeant companies are despicable and they should be ashamed of their lack of integrity and business ethics.
Ok i just gave my 3 cats (like about a week or 2 ago) one of these deadly products. i am not even 13 and been through a few pet deaths and am not willing 2 go through 3 more. my pets havent acted weird or sick, but im am not risking it. i have stopped giving them it, but i want 2 know if they still have a chance to die.
my cat almost died from liver failure because of hartz flea treatment. i gave it to her, she started jumping around and acting crazy i knew she was having a reaction to it. so i took her to emergency night vet, they bathed her in dawn dishwashing liquid, and said she should be fine. HOWEVER, within two days, she was just laying on the grass, and i knew she was very sick. so i took her to : SHERMAN OAKS VET CLINIC, DR. SCANLAN, (818) 784-9977, SHE IS AN ACUPUNCTURE VET, AND HAD I TAKEN HER TO A REGULAR VET, I KNOW SHE WOULD HAVE DIED. she immediately found out through blood tests that her liver was failing cause of poison in hartz, and put her on acupuncture, herbs, and i had to feed her liver cat food through a dropper, to feed the liver, she hated it, but we had to get it down her to feed the liver. now she is fine, but it was a very close call. i still once in a while give her dandelion herb and milk thistle in a dropper bottle to rebuild and nourish the liver. these are pills which i buy at the health food store, one each in the bottle with pure water, then a dropperful once or twice a week til mixture is gone. dr. scanlan can save your animals.
let’s get hartz off the shelves, it is unconscionable that they are allowed to legally poison our pets.
thank you and good luck.
I just saw this and wanted to pass to all. I used Hartz Ultra Guard Flea & Tick on my 6 yr old MinPin “Mister”. I didn’t notice any problems but I not gonna use it anymore. I found this info on Wikipedia. also called sumithrin, is a synthetic pyrethroid that kills adult fleas and ticks. It has also been used to kill head lice in humans.Phenothrin is often used with methoprene, an insect growth regulator that interrupts the insect’s biological life cycle by killing the eggs.In 2005, the EPA required Hartz Mountain Industries to cancel uses of several flea and tick products containing phenothrin that were linked to a range of adverse reactions, including hair loss, salivation, tremors, and numerous deaths in cats and kittens. In the short term, the agreement called for new warning labels on the products. As of March 31, 2006, the sale and distribution of Hartz’s phenothrin-containing flea and tick products for cats has been terminated. However, EPA’s product cancellation order did not apply to Hartz flea and tick products for dogs, and Hartz continues to use phenothrin in a concentration of 85.7% in many of its flea and tick products for dogs.
I just gave my cat (approx. 8-9 months old) Hartz Ultra Guard Rid Worm Paste about 15 minutes ago. He wouldn’t take it in his food… so I just gave it to him orally. I only issued about 5 lbs worth (200 mg) to him although he is about 12-15 lbs. I was doing a google search in order to find out if it’ll work/stories of triumph/etc… regarding this medication. Obviously, I ran into this webpage. It was the first thing I saw on my search. Now I NEED to know, did I just poison my cat? Is he going to start acting weird and eventually die??? Can anyone offer comfort on this???
Unfortunately, I was not aware of the fatal consequences of many of the flea prevention spot treatments. I have 2 cats, Seven is 3 years old and Russia is 8 and a half months old. They are truly the highlight of my day, mainly because they are with me when I get up in the morning and right there every night when I go to bed. Well, yesterday evening I put the Zodiac flea spot treatment on both of my cats around 8pm after noticing them scratching a few times around the collars. My mother had given me the tube because it was left over from my parents cats. At 3am this morning I woke up to one of the cats racing through the apartment banging herself against the walls. When I got into the spare bedroom Russia (the youngest one) was laying on the floor tremoring and gasping for breath in her own urine. When I realized there was something REALLY wrong I called for my fiance to get up and find Seven (the other cat). He nearly broke the bed trying to get her out and she, as well, was tremoring and having a hard time breathing. I KNEW it had to have been the flea treatment because it was the ONLY thing common to the situation. In a panic I got them in the carriers and to the ER vet…I was crying so hysterically my fiance had to drive. It was fortunate that I woke up and found them when I did, because the vet told me that from the tremors, their body temperature had risen to a FATAL level and a few more hours, they would have been dead. Basically, the zodiac flea treatment had poisoned them and it was shutting down their nervous system. Needless to say, many tears, an EXTREMELY large vet bill for 2 cats later, my poor babies are currently sedated on IV fluids and medication to counteract the poison from this TERRIBLE flea treatment.
As of now, they are hopefully going to make it through this, but I have been informed by my vet that there could be greater consequences that won’t show up until later on because of the toxicity of the treatment. I truly beleive something needs to be done. It is a disgrace…literally.
