Sergeant’s Silver Flea & Tick Squeeze-on: DON’T USE!!!

Please please please do not use Sergeant’s Silver Flea & Tick on your pets!! It has SERIOUS and LIFE THREATENING side effects, which we are experiencing with our pug this week! She has been breathing heavily/panting, constantly scratching the area where we applied the medicine, has lost her personality, has a 102 fever, is lethargic, and she doesn’t want to play/go outside.  It started immediately after we applied the flea killer.  Luckily we bathed her and gave her Benedryl right away or it could have been worse.  So far we’ve bathed her twice, once with Dawn dish soap (which is the only thing that will take the flea medicine off), made two vet visits (4 shots and some pills) and have been shoving Benadryl down her throat all week! it has been 3 days now and she is just starting to feel better.  It wasn’t until I found this website yesterday that I even knew for sure what the problem was.
The vet we saw says he sees this all the time, and has also seen cases where animals have died from this. The vet also said all OTC flea meds are garbage and to use what your vet provides you with.
It’s unbelievable that this medicine has not been pulled off the shelves after all the harm it’s caused to poor dogs/cats and their owners!!!

  1. Do not use this product. Made my dogs sick for hours and I thougth we were going to lose them … Had to shampoo out the flea treatment and then give them Vet. medication to calm them down. Should be taken off the market

  2. Oh my goodness, I wish that I had seen this article prior to using the SAME product on my two boxers. Lil (7 years) and Glory (4 years) both were treated. With-in hours they started exhibiting weakness of their back legs, they started biting at their backs, and whining in pain. I called Sergeants 1-800-224-7387 pressed option number two and a “Tracey” there at the pet medical help line was rude and uncaring. She gave no help at all. My vet had us call them first to see what they would recommend. My dogs are still not able to walk properly, and still being treated for pain. I washed both dogs also, once with pet shampoo and once with dish soap. I called back again the same number and ERICKA a Supervisor was more worried about defending the office and product. She did say that the animals after being treated can have a painful reaction of numbness and pins an needles over their bodies, but ” it usually goes away in a FEW days”. STAY AWAY FROM SERGEANT THEIR PRODUCTS HURT ANIMALS AND NOT ONLY DO THEY ALREADY KNOW THIS, THEY DO NOT CARE!!!!!!!

  3. I used this Sergeants Silver flea and tick squeez on my father’s toy poodle earlier today, and he srarted acting wierd right away,as time went by he started shakeing his head like his ears were itching now hes breathing funny, wineing, throwing up and running from one place to another like he is in pain.I did give him a bath after about an hour, but its been about eight or ten hours since I put the stuff on and hes getting worse. So I get on the internet and find out the shit is poison,if my father’s dog dies Im going to take Sergeants to court, after all the complaints I see on the web this stuff should have been taken off of the market,I will never buy anymore of their products thats for damn sure.

  4. I really wish I would have read the post before using Sergeant’s Silver on my Shih tzu. She started throwing up, scratching and whinning. She would not play, eat, drink go out side or anything. I looked online and found this site, so I bathed her in Ivory dish soap and headed to the vet. $175.00 dollars later I was told the Sergeants silver is what did this to my little girl. I have bathed her twice today and have given her a dose of benadryl. She seems to be doing some what better. I called the Hotline number and spoke to Ashley. She was very nice until I said something about the $175.00 vet bill. Then the tone changed and she said she would have to leave a message for the office, what ever that means. I will update you when and if they return my call.

If you use this product….bathe your pet as soon as possible. The key is getting this junk OFF of your pet.

  5. I bought Sergeant’s Silver (blue label) on my 7lb Maltese, about 45 minutes later he started acting funny, rolling on the floor, scratching at the area where we had put it on him. We bathed him with dog shampoo but it didn’t help much so we washed him again about 3 hours later and still no relief. I called my vet who said I should call Sergeant’s and see what they said. I called Sergeant’s they said we over dosed him! They said the product is not for use for animals under 9 pounds – on the box it said for animals under 12 lbs – nothing about more than 9 lbs but less than 12 lbs.- Please please please do not use this product on your pets. I feel horrible that I’ve caused my doggie anxiety, pain and itching all over.

DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! It should be taken off the market!

  6. I wish I had read this BEFORE I used this product!! My Yorkiepoo had a terrible reaction! It started as itching and redness along the back where the meds were applied, later he began wretching for hours and couldn’t sit still or lay down, many hours into the night and early morning, it was like he was trying to throw up but couldn’t. I started assuming it was from the Hartz Silver and washed his back off, but it didn’t seem to help. He then kept trying to eat my houseplants, something he doesn’t normally do, so I let him have some grass from outside, he ate it and ate it and ate it, until he finally threw up and seemed to be better and was able to sleep (and me) for a couple of hours. I left for work and he seemed better, then I read this post and am more concerned than ever and I’m running home on my lunch hour and giving him a bath with Dawn dishsoap as recommended. Poor guy! Damn Hartz!

  7. WARNING: Pets can have allergic reactions to ANY kind of medicine we give them, whether it’s from a vet or not. Always do what you can to “test” your dog to see if they will have an allergic reaction to something that you apply to their skin and coat.

I use Sergeant’s silver and gold products on my dogs and have never experienced problems. Maybe my dogs are just lucky. I’ve talked with my vet and he has told me that as long as they don’t have allergic reactions to it, which is what everyone complaining is experiencing, then there is no reason to stop using the product.

Now that’s a good vet to me, he suggested his products but didn’t insist that I use them or I’d be killing my dogs.

  8. We used this stuff on our 1yr old 10lb. crossbreed she started shaking her head like she had ear mites or an ear infection, she would scratch her ears and wimper alot when she touched them. She plays and runs outdoors on our farm during the day and stays in at night and just seemed really uneasy and couldn’t sleep or ever get comfortable for the last 3 days. Just looked up this product on the web and this is what we found. What do we do besides bath her at this point?

  9. PLEASE DO NOT USE SERGEANTS FLEA AND TICK PROTECTION!!! It is nothing but poison. Shortly after giving this poison to my Bichon Poo who is about 13 lbs. She started whinning, coughing, throw up and running around wild. I finally figured out it was this poison SERGEANTS FLEA AND TICK PROTECTION! We washed her 3 times and gave her an aspirin that was a few hours ago and she seems to be doing better. I called the store where I bought the poison and they said they could not take it off the shelf because it had not been recalled. I told them when I shop there next week if I find it on the shelf, I’ll bring it all to the front desk! Something needs to be done about this.

  10. I used sergeant’s silver flea and tick squeeze-on rate for my 80 pound lab. We did not have a good outcome with this treatment. I saw symptoms such as nausea, vomiting hypersaliation, photophobic ( he sayed under a table to get out of the light), and psychotic behavior. After I bathed him these symptoms decreased and about two days resolved. I called our vet and she strongly urged us to never use sergeant’s silver again. I call the company and never got a response. In addition, the ingedients on the box are vague, but was told, by the vet, that a portion is made from lye. I also looked up signs and symptoms of the other ingredient, cyphenothrin, and believe the dose this company suggest is just too much for pet animals.
I will never use this product again and I will not recommend this to anyone.

  11. Oh Good grief I wish I had read this site before my husband put the Sergent’s silver flea & tick sqeeze on our 8 yr. old boxer. I am angry to read so many pet owner’s like myself had no idea this stuff was so dangerous to our beloved pets.

Our dog was given a bath on Friday and my husband applied this stuff on her and shortly afterwards…Maggie could not sit still…She was running around and favoring her back/leg area…she was up and down all night long…she cannot not lay down for long and she’s been drinking lots and lots of water and she also threw up. I had no idea this crap was so unsafe.

I just finished reading the suggestions here and so we bathed her 3 times…I also gave her a Benadryl…Hopefully…she settles down long enough to relax…

If my dog doesn’t make it…I will be calling a Lawyer & the Media. Our children love this dog and she’s been part of our family for 8 yrs. It’s not money I’ll be looking for; it’s justice for all pets harmed by the chemicals and lack of warnings on this poison being sold to pet owner’s trying to do the right thing…We just want our dogs to be free from flea & ticks..

    I hope I’ve made sense…I’m burning mad.

  12. I wash my yorkie and applied Sergeant’s Silver Flea & Tick Squeeze on him. Within minutes he started acting funny; running around, scratching and biting at himself. He was whining in pain and hiding under the desk crying, I washed the crap off but he continued, I tried washing it off again but he was still acting funny. I has acted like he was going to throw up all day and just laying around the house, not active at all. I am getting on the phone to my vet immediately after reading about all the horror stories.NEVER NEVER EVER USE THIS AGAIN

  13. Don’t use it on cats either!!!!!!!! we used the silver stuff on our 12 year old domestic shorthair and he has been acting funny ever since, and tonight I discovered a nasty sore on his shoulders where we put that crap. Poor kitty. I can’t believe those #$@%& haven’t taken that #%$@ off the market. I hope someone sues the pants off them.

  14. I just had a three-year old mixed breed have problems with this poison they call medicine. She would pant heavily, not sit still, and she would be drinking so much water as if she were dehydrated. We’ve already bathed her and she seems to be doing better. Just to be sure we’ll give get some Benadryl.
Sargeant’s has some really sick people in that company if they are selling products to hurt our pets.

  15. Warning:
DONT PUT THAT SHIT ON YOUR DOGS/CATS…THEY MAY POSIBLIE DIE!!

yeah my mom put that shit on her two dogs(muts no type of breed)…and lke 3 mins or 5 i dont really kno they started pukein…foamie and shit…how the hell can ppl sell stuff that does this to puppies dogs cats watever…i mean its inhumane….im going to do sumthin about this if i can ….im only one person but FUCK Sargeant’s thier company can burn for all i care….if thdy die there will be a bigger prob on there hands…i mean so ppl cant afford takin there pet to the vet right away….id rather my pet be infested than deal with that shit!!!

  16. OMFG! I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY SELL THIS POISON!!!! IF I HAD READ THIS PRIOR TO TREATING MY DEER HEAD PUPPY…I WOULD NOT HAVE USED THIS PRODUCT!!! HE IMMEDIATELY BEGAN SCRATCHING HIS EARS AND HIS NECK WHERE I APPLIED IT.THEN HE STARTED DRYHEAVING. TRYING TO VOMIT- BUT UNABLE TO.HE WAS RUNNING IN CIRCLES LIKE HE WAS IN PAIN AND TRYING TO (HIDE) UNDER OUR COVERS…I GUESS THINKING HE COULD RUN FROM THE PAIN.WE WASHED HIM 3 TIMES AND GAVE HIM CHILDRENS BENADRYL.WE ARE NOW AT THE VETS OFFICE AND I AM NOT EVEN TRYING TO CALL THIS COMPANY. I HAVE INSTEAD CALLED MY ATTORNEY.MY DOG MAY SUFFER PERMANENT PAIN AND DAMAGE TO HIS REAR LEGS. HE MAY NOT EVEN SURVIVE.
REGARDLESS, THIS WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.YOUR COMPANY JUST HADN’T RAN UP AGAINST SOMEBODY WHO HAD THE KNOW-HOW TO GET THIS PRODUCT PULLED IMMEDIATELY BY CONTACTING THE MEDIA.

  17. WOW I NEVER KNEW SOOOO MANY OTHER’S ARE GOING THROUGH WHAT MY HUSBAND AND I ARE GOING THROUGH! MY POOR LITTLE SHIH TZU HAS THE SAME SIDE EFFECTS AS IVE BEEN READING. VOMITING, FOAMING UNCONTROLLABLY, SEIZURES, ROLLING AROUND ON THE CARPET SCRATCHING, THE WHOLE NINE! IVE WASHED HIM LIKE 4 TIMES! AND GAVE HIM SOME ALLERGY MEDS (BENADRLY)AND PLENTY OF ICE COLD WATER.. IT MAKES ME ANGRY THAT THIS SO CALLED PRODUCT IS STILLLLLLLLL ON THE SHELVES! I MEAN WHAT ELSE IS IT GOING TO TAKE FOR THEM TO STOP SELLING THIS CRAP! MY DOG DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE SUFFERING LIKE THIS! I JUST PRAY THAT HE MAKES IT THROUGH THE NIGHT:(.. IN THE MEAN TIME, I’LL BE HAVING A COUPLE OF WORDS FOR THIS COMPANY! BANK ON THAT!

  18. DO NOT USE SERGEANTS GOLD OR ANY SERGEANTS PRODUCT ON YOUR ANIMALS!!! ADD 3 MORE DOGS TO THE LIST!!

I was out of town and came home to find that 3 dogs had been treated with this HORRIBLE GARBAGE. A Shitzu (full grown), a Shitzu puppy, and a yorkie/chihuahua mix…all 3 were washed in dawn twice and 10 hours later they are still miserable and showing THE SAME SIDE EFFECTS that are listed by everyone else..our local animal emergency says benadryl dosage for dogs is 1mg per pound of body weight. FYI regular Benadryl is 25mg per tablet (read the label) or capsule so figure the dosage for your dog with that information if you are having this problem. First bathe them thoroughly to get THE POISON off, twice if necessary then use benadryl if needed!! HOPEFULLY YOU HAVE READ ALL THESE POSTINGS BEFORE USING THIS CRAP….Best of luck to all with this PROBLEM. I’LL BET THE PEOPLE AT SERGEANTS USE FRONTLINE.

  19. Dear friends & animal lovers. Yes please do NOT use this sh*t on any of your animals!!! My wife detected a fair amount of fleas on our 8 month old brussels griffin puppy, which she had never had before. It was late at night, and i purchased some at duane reade in new york city. what a mistake!

We put some on her right away, and within minutes, same thing as everyone else. Poor girl was running around, scratching, trying to rub the crap off of her! We went to bed, and all night long she was tossing, getting up, acting very strange. We woke up the next morning and decided something was obviously wrong. She would not stop scratching and shaking her head, and being uncomfortable. We washed her in baby shampoo and watched her for a good part of the day. She was still obviously in pain etc, so i rushed her to my vet. The vet said NEVER use Hartz or OTC flea meds. She had a blood test etc. We have since washed her in Dawn dishwashing soap, as per the vets orders. And I have given her another bath, and Benadryl, after reading these posts. We all love our animals. These people are sick at Hartz/Seargants. How cruel, keeping a product that sickens/kills sweet animals. Shame on you…taking advantage of pet owners.

  20. I used seargent silver on all 3 of my dogs….a while later they started shaking their heads like their ears had water in them…so i cleaned them…still doing it…dry heaving then my littlest dog threw up clear fluid…they all rolled on the floor to get it off…running around, not being able to sit still…i pulled this up…and seen all this and was soooo mad at myself because I am usually more observant than this..but low on money this month and figured i would get the few fleas they had and treat the house and all and maybe wont have to buy the expensive stuff…WONT BE DOING THAT AGAIN…bathed them all in dawn..the littlest dog twice and gave benedryl and water…they are finally sleeping a little…every now and then they would scratch..but not half as much…i also (i know this sounds wierd) but put the power made my vagisil on them…it is an absorbant powder and has certain stuff in it..that helps with itching and burning…and it also absorbs oils and stuff…..that seemed to help too…also usued a cold rag and solorcain spray on where i put the stuff…to sooth it…i will be investigating more about retaliation to get this stuff removed…they are a big name and should not be happening like this…

  21. I just buried my 2 year old cat this morning. We used the Sergeants silver on him about a week ago, and he started acting lethargic and stopped eating and drinking. When I tried to force water on him, he vomited. I took him to the vet and they tried IVs and antibiotics, but he died last night at the vets office.

  22. I read these comments and they are heartbreaking. Kristy, I’m so sorry you lost your 2 year old cat today. I understand the sense of loss, hurt, guilt and devastation. I’m very sorry.

There are many more of you–Sandy, Alejandro, Rick and many others. I wish you all the best.

Thank you for bringing forward your stories. Hartz and Sergeant’s have among the worst safety records in the industry (Although Hartz likes to point the finger at their competitor, Sergeant’s, as the big offender). Their products containing the pesticide neurotoxins phenothrin (Hartz) and cyphenothrin (Sergeant’s) have accounted for a significant number of the adverse incidents reported to the EPA. Please take one important step to help other pets and pet owners. Please take the time to report your incident to the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC). This organization works with the EPA to compile the database of incidents and statistics that will be analyzed and used as a basis for corrective action. The NPIC can be reached at 1-800-858-7378. They are very professional, courteous and efficient. This is a critical step in the public forcing the EPA to do the right thing and get these neuro-toxin pesticide ingredients out of the marketplace. Also, please call Hartz Mountain (1-800-275-1414) and Sergeant’s (1-800-224-7387) and report these incidents to them. They will not be happy to hear from you, but they–like all the manufacturers–have an obligation under federal law to forward your report to the EPA. Hartz Mountain, for example, has been cited and fined for not properly and promptly reporting these incidents in the past…put the pressure on these manufacturers by giving them the details and forcing them to report to the EPA. Also, they should be asked to reimburse your medical expenses…don’t hesitate to ask for this. Thank you again; I sincerely hope your pet recovers completely. It’s reprehensible that Hartz, BioSpot, Sergeant’s and others continue to injure and kill thousands of pets. It’s been going on for many years and it’s way overdue for the EPA to take strong regulatory action…absolutely reprehensible.

Again, I’m very sorry you and your pets have experienced these terrible, unnecessary and tragic incidents. I wish you the best.

  23. ok this product “sergeants silver” is shit i wish my mother and i have read this before we used it – we have three cats zoe, cheetah, and toma we just got over having one of our cats Buddha pass away for a diff reason i cant deal with seeing 2 of the 3 cats suffering from a shit product and yet it is aloud to be sold, if i had the money i would sue them and like someone else said not for money but for the suffering of all the people who used there product i checked the product and there is no warning what so ever about it putting animals into a seizure and killing them making them foam from the mouth cry obviously in pain they can’t walk they just slide on the floor and flop around i can’t take it – i love my cats even though cheetah is a bitch she is family and i love her as well as toma to death – i don’t think this product should be aloud to be sold in any stores and i think someone should do something about this – honestly no warnings at all and yet it is still sold with all of these problems.

  24. This is rediculous! My poor little long-haired chihuahua had a flea outbreak, and I couldn’t get to the vet so I opted for the Seargeant’s Silver OTC. Lovely! My dog had this on him for 20-24 hours before I realized the harm it was doing to the poor little guy. He is so uncomfortable and itching uncontrollably. He cries nonstop and his back legs are not functioning correctly. He cannot lay still and circles around constantly. I am so upset over this. I cannot believe no one has taken any action against this company to get this crap removed from the shelves. I think we need to raise awareness. Everyone should write a letter to their local newspapers to have published. This will help some other little helpless animal from falling victim to pestcide poisoning. I’m on my way to the vet now! This is so heartbreaking. I have not read anyone having a positive outcome from this. If your dogs made it and made a full recovery, please let us know!

  25. THIS IS VERY SADDDDDDDDD. I AM SO UPSET RIGHT NOW MY BABY IS SO MISRABLE AND IN SOOOOOO MUCH PAIN . I DONT KNOW WWHAT TO DO FOR HIM. WE GAVE HIM A BATHE TODAY AND PUT THE SEARGANT GOLD ON HIM. AND MAN HE STARTED PANTING HARD, THROWING UP, RUNNING AROUND UNCONTROLABLE, WHINNING AND WHIMPING. HE IS ALSO BITING ON HIS HIND LEGS CONTINUESLY, WHAT DO I DO NOW ? I CALL A 24 HR VET AND THEY SAID WE CAN BRING HIM IN BUT IT STARTS OFF AT 95.00 WHICH WE DONT HAVE NOW. TAKE THIS MESS OFF THE MARKET PLEASE !!!!!!

  26. While an animal can have a reaction to any product, this particular product has left a trail of destruction behind it.
Hartz should post a “hazardous to most pets” label on this product, as I’ve heard many more cases of it hurting than those few who defend the product saying it didn’t hurt their pets. Why take the chance? Use products that most people do not have problems with and let this one cost the company.

  27. MY WIFE AND I USED THIS PRODUCT ON OUR 4 YEAR OLD PITBULL AND OUR 2 YEAR OLD PITBULL. IN A MATTER OF HOURS OUR OLDEST PITBULL STARTED TO START LICKING HIS CHOPS IN A SPASTIC MANNER, DROULING, WHINING, AND SPASTICLY MOVING THROUGH OUT THE HOUSE. TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON HE STARTED PUCKING, FINALLY HE STOPPED PUCKING AND REMAINED SPASTIC, DROULING AND WHINING. WITH IN A COUPLE HOURS OF THE SYMPTONS ON OUR OLDEST OUR YOUNGES PITBULL STARTED GETTING SPASTIC WITH ITCHING, ACTING OUT IN WEIRD MANNERS AND HAVING TROUBLES WALKING. WE THEN PUT TWO AND TWO TOGETHER REALIZING THE ONLY THING IN COMMON WAS THE FLEA AND TICK MEDS–CALLED POISON CONTROL AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO HAVE THEM DRINK LOTS OF WATER-SEVERAL HOURS HAVE PASSED AND NO CHANGE IN EITHER DOG—WE THEN CAME ACROSS THIS SITE FINDING SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS HAVING SAME PROBLEMS—AS NOTED IN OTHER BLOGS WE ARE GIVING OUR DOGS BENADRYL AND WASHED THEM SEVERAL TIMES WITH DAWN DISH SOAP. WE ARE NOW AWAITING A RECOVER FROM THE POISONING. THIS PRODUCT IS DANGEROUS, INHUMAN AND ABSOLUTELY ALL PRODUCTS SHOULD BE PULLED FROM SHELVES. THE COMPANY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR ANIMAL, THEY ARE ONLY AFTER YOUR MONEY AND DONT HAVE ANY REGRETS ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. I too had a problem with fleas on my mixed breed dog Ellie. I bathed her and then treated her with Seargents Silver last night and with about 30 minutes she started barking at me (she talks that way)- I couldn’t figure out what the problem was and she started walking around erratically and still barking at me. She settled down eventually for a bit and for some reason I decided to check out this product online – have never felt the need before so she must have told me something I guess and came across this website. I immediately bathed her and that seemed to give her a little relief and she did sleep however she is still very fidgety today and is salivating constantly.
Is there anythign else I can do about this? do I need to take her to the vet?

  29. I am so happy to have found this web site. My only hope is that it is not too late. I used the Sergeant’s Silver on my 7 year old Yorkie yesterday. She seemed to start acting odd within a few minutes. She just laid down and wouldn’t move at first, then she beacme very verbal, whinning and barking, which she never does. The smell from the product was making MY asthma act up. She started drinking allot of water and then became hyper and restless. Panting. My husband got on-line and found this site. I gave her a bath in Dawn, which took the horrible smell away but she was still ‘not right’ I gave her another bath and watched her all night. This morning she has thrown-up twice and seems almost drugged, hard to explain. I hope that I don’t have to take her to the Vet BUT it might be the only way to save her from this suffering. This poison MUST BE TAKEN OFF THE MARKET.

  30. There are way too many sad stories mentioned here pertaining to the use of Hartz/Sergeant’s flea & tick medications to blame improper dosage (as some comments say are the companies’ excuse for problems). I used Sergeant’s Silver squeeze-ons and the proper weight dosage; my two dogs experienced similar problems as listed on this website. My concern led me to the site–unfortunately, it’s after the fact…when our poor pooches are sick beyond belief! Write the manufacturers and tell everyone you know that these products should be withdrawn from store shelves. I will never use another Sergeant’s product again.

  31. i have a shar pei (notorious for skin problems) and i used this product on him for flea removal. i’m surprised he hasn’t experienced any of the problems these other people talk about. no problems at all. fleas are gone and he is happy as ever! sorry for everyone else’s luck.

  32. I used sergeant silvers flea and tick on my 9 lbs dog on Thanksgiving, and just like all the rest of the stories he started itching so bad, vomited 3 times and was in so much pain. I gave him 3 baths in Dawn dish soap and took him to the vet in the middle of the night. I talked to vet and she said you gets cases like this in the office all the time. So have 3 shot at the vet and 200 dollars later my dog is doing a little better but still not himself yet. I wish I would have read these posts before I used this product. Please please please do NOT use this on any of your pets!!!

  33. My sister used Sargeants Silver on her cat yesterday and kitty has been drooling and acting weird ever since. She just gave the cat a bath and I hope it’s not too late 🙁

  34. I wish I had seen these comments before using this crap on my 3 yr old maltese. He has had all of the symptoms given except vomitting. Our vet told us to wash him in blue dawn dish soap. We also gave him bendryl. He seems to like it when we rub his back and neck…it sooths him. We have been giving him bread, white rice (no persertives), crackers, and small amounts of milk. He seems to be eatting and drink that and doing well. Hopefully, he makes a full recovery!!! Will keep you all posted.

I’m so sorry all of this happend to you and your pet. If your like us our dog is our child and it is painful for you too. Best wishes and I hope this helps.

  35. This stuff is poison! My corgi and jack-russell started itching about an hour after appling. after a day it seemed as though their backs looked swollen and they couldnt even shake. The jack-russell started getting weak in the rear legs and I called the vet. They looked into the product and gave me this web-site and I was SHOCKED to read the stories!
I had already washed the product off before I called the vet and after reading all this I washed them again. I gave my jack-russell some benadryl and I hope we caught this in time. We all need to go to the media with this!!! My God! How many cases does it take before someone does something about it!

  36. I posted a comment on Jan. 14th, 2010 about my 3 year old maltese. I am happy to report that he has made a full recovery with so far no long lasting side effects. Which is unreal to me. We did end up taking him to the vet to get a steroid shot and some pain medicine (just so he could sleep). I will tell you all that we caught it after about 12 hours and it took him a solid week to return to semi-normal. Best wishes to all of you and please make sure you report this to their 1800 number and to the FDA they are reporting and investigating these protects.

Best wishes and I hope this helps.

  37. Last night I noticed fleas on my pug. I rememered that we had some Seargants silver in the drawer from the time we used it on my other dog. He had no reaction. My pug on the other hand had a horrible reaction. Throwing up,shaking, foaming at the mouth, running around in circles, acting scared of everything! She was acting nothing like herself! It’s the next day and she is still acting weird, Drooling, scared of everything! We called the vet and they said they get alot of that reaction to that medication and to just wash her in dawn soap and let it run it’s course. I hope she’ll be ok!

  38. We put this crap on our shih tzu’s. Within minutes, both dogs were itching, running around, and when they tried to lay down they would jump up and start itching and crying. This went on for hours. First we just took a rag and tried to wipe the stuff off. after about 10 minutes that didn’t work so we gave them baths, 1 seemed a little better after the bath but not right. we then got on the internet and find this site, read some of the different things people did, when to the store at 2:00 am to get blue dawn detergent and washed both dogs again. One was much better the other one would only lay calm if someone was rubbing her where the medicine was applied. We then gave her so benadryl and that seemed to give her some relief. all in all in took 3 days for this puppies to get back to normal.DO NOT BUY THIS AND SOMEONE SHOULD A CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST THEM GOING.

  39. I gave Sergeant’s Silver Flea & Tick medicine to my dog and an hour later she immediately started having an allergic reaction. She is a chihuahua/terrier mix and is no more than 7 pounds. Please don’t use this on your dogs, mine was running around rubbing her body everywhere and drinking water frequently. I washed her with DAWN soap for ten minutes and she has calmed down right now shes sleeping calmly but i am still worried that i wont go away and to make it worse no vets are open until Monday!!! This medicine needs to get pulled off the shelves!!!

  40. I had the same issue when we tried to use this product on our 1 yr old puggle. She has been scratching at the site all night even after medication. Three baths did not help. Not happy,…product is junk.

  41. i bought sergeants silver flea and tick squeeze in tubes applied them to my 3 dogs at 6 pm, sunday, at 11:30 pm 1 dog,,, diva,,, shepherd was foamy at the mouth,,,, googled the meds. saw this site, gave her a bath with dawn antibacterial dish soap, gave her a dbl. shot of theraflu warming relief diphenhydramine hci 12.5,at 3:30am the other dog developed the same,,, at 6:00 am my third dog developed it,gave all 3 baths, cleaned their pens, new bedding,,, according to my vet,,, YOU MUST GET THEM BATHED WITH THE DAWN AND GIVE THE DIPHENHYDRAMINE HCI,he said i probably get it time,,,DON’T USE sergeants,,,, it better and saffer to wait and get the good stuff from your vet,

  42. Like everyone has said before, I wish I would’ve read this before using sergeant’s gold on my dog.it is now 5:37am and we’ve been up since 3. I put that stuff on her around 9 pm and put her to bed in her kennel. After hearing her whining to go out and letting her outside seberal times knew something was off. I gave her a bath, then another, but her breathing seems strange and she keeps swallowing and sounding like she has to throw up. Thank goodness I found this site. I bathed her in dish soap and she’s finally resting. I feel so guilty that she has had to suffer for my ignorance. I read the box over and over and I never saw that there could be such serious side effects as I’ve read in these posts. Also, their website was a joke. No help at all there. I hope and pray that she’ll be ok and that all of your pets have made full recoveries

  43. Last Sunday, I too gave my poodle a treatment of sergeants silver, flea&tick squeeze-on. What a mistake, the sore back, red line dowm the middle, where the med was put on. the painful hurt, looks and whines, no sleep for a night, little food, its been a week now, sleeps off and on, buts bites at his back yet. Still irratated under his skin and looks at me for help.

We did the bath within minutes, and called the hotline the next day, the dawn dish soap bath, vitamin E pills. Since then we are still, useing hydrocortazone cream on the itch-pain spots.and hoping this nightmare ends soon.

anyone knows when this will stop and I get my lil loving poodle back.

  44. Update on my dog::: so i had washed my chihuahua/terrier mix with dawn soap but it didn’t seem to help. I finally took her to the vet after three days and he told me that they have had many cases with Sargent Silver flee medicine and that a lot of dogs end up with nerve damage….so the vet had to wash out the toxins from her blood to prevent any further nerve damage(my dog was already crying in pain because her foot was beginning to become numb). It cost me 400 bucks but im thankful my dog is fine.

****Also you can get Sargent Silver to pay for your vet bill or receive a full refund if your vet contacts them and your pet is not under 9 pounds unfortunately mine was only 7 pounds so i had to pay for the bill because they claimed i overdosed my dog even though i only put half of it on her and mixed it with water!

Best of luck to all the pet owners out there.

  45. I cannot beleive after all that i have read that this stuff is still out there – same thing with my multipoo tonight – he is running around so uncomfortable, cannot sit still, panting, whining, I gave him two baths so far – he keeps scratching and licking – i have given him 3 doses of benodryl and it is not helping – I think I may have gotten it in my skin too – it feels like I am itchy everywhere – I cannot imgagine how my dog feels if i feel like this – I am calling the company tomorrow and they can pay for everything my dog has to go through – this is complete BS that this is still out there – i have used otc before – not this brand – but NEVER had this problem! I put it on my dog at around noon today and it is 12:04 am now and he is still having so many problems!!

  46. I put Sergeants Silver flea & tick squeeze on my Shitzu and almost imediate he started acting funny. He was going from room to room breathing very hard. It’s almost like he has to fight to catch a breath. He can’t go to sleep because every time he tried to lie down starts to jerk. He don’t have control of his back legs, they just keep kicking out like he is having a spasm. I gave him a bath in Bed Head dog shampoo, and then searched the web and found out to bath him in dawn dish soap and give hime benadryl. I have given him 2 baths in dawn. Today he is a little better, but still is having the prblems with his legs. He acts like he is drunk or something. This is crazy, this stuff has been doing this for atleast 3 years to dogs and why are they still selling it? I wish I would have researched the crap before I put it on my dog and put him through hell. I have noticed most post are of little dogs, only a few bigger breads. Are they ever going to take it off the shelf?

  47. My husband put Sergeant’s Silver flea and tick on our 1yr old Lab. Hours later our dog was not using his hind leg, rubbing himself against walls, scratching and nipping at himself. We didn’t connect the flea stuff with the symptoms because we’ve used other flea products without trouble. As the evening wore on Rocky was using his leg more and was acting less weird. We thought it was due to a flip he had done running around outside. This morning he was shaking his head like there was something he had to get out of it, he was still leaning up against walls and staggering a bit. We FINALLY connected the flea stuff with symptoms and bathed him. I just typed in Seargeant’s silver and this was the #1 listing. MAN I wish we would have looked it up before we used it!!!! DON’T USE THIS PRODUCT!!!!

  48. Like everyone else, I used this poison on my Chihuahua. Same horrible symptoms as everyone else reported. It’s been 4 days and she is still miserable. I am taking further steps against this company. My brother is an attorney and has agreed to help my cause. Hope all our beloved pets recover.

  49. Like many I used Sergeants Silver on my Havanese after I got to a camp site 2 1/2 hours from my home. I was in a 35 foot motor home by myself and the dog, everyone else was joining us a day later. Same reactions as most and had to pack up camp and make a midnight run to a 24 hour Vet my wife helped me find in the area I was camping so the poor dog could get treatment. When he started with the running, trying to hide from whatever was attacking him, scratching, whining, drooling, I washed him twice with human shampoo before realizing that wasn’t going to help much. The Vet did their thing, and I am very appreciative to Noah’s Ark Animal Hospital in Dublin, Ohio for everything they did, and helping me with follow up questions. My son showed up the next day and I gave my pet a short hair cut, then washed him a third time with Dawn. I also gave him Children’s Benadryl and the Steroid medication the vet sent me home with, also pain meds for the first two days. After the cut, a third bath with Dawn, and meds my pet started feeling better. We are on day 4 and he is still not 100 percent, and you can feel the heat on his back where the flea and tick crap was applied. I’ve seen a lot in all my years, and the only way to describe this experience is HORRIBLE!!!!! Needless to say I will never by ANY Sergeants/Hartz product again, nor would I piss on them if they were on fire!!!

  50. I put Sergeant’s silver on my Chihuahua/Terrier mix who weighs 10 lbs and she had an allergic reaction too.

I washed her immediately in pet shampoo, washed her today in Dawn dish detergent, gave her Benadryl & rubbed Benadryl cream on the rash.

She’s still itching like crazy and miserable – I am going to call both the National Pesticide & Sargeant’s. I am so unhappy with this company and product!

I am hoping my baby gets better soon.

  51. I can’t believe this product is still on store shelves! These posts date back over a year and encompass almost a hundred poor victimized pets. Our puppy Payton had a similar reaction to the ones detailed on so many of these other pets. Shes a 25lb 5 month old lab mix puppy and within hours of applying the Sergeants silver for 9 to 20lb dogs she was wimpering and scrathing and spastic! 25mg of benedryl and 2 Dawn baths later she has finally passed out but I’m certain she is still in pain. I called the company’s 24 hour hotline and they said this happens sometimes and that all I could do was bath her in Dawn to remove the oil based POISON I stupidly put on my poor baby pooch. And then apply some Vitamin E to her to try and stop the pain. She is sleeping now but I’m absolutely furious at myself for not researching this stuff before I put it on her. How in the world can dogs be dying from this garbage and it still remains on STORE SHELVES!!!! NEVER USE THESE PRODUCTS ON YOUR ANIMALS!! THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO INTEREST IN THE WELL BEING OF OUR PETS!!! I’m sick to death thinking of the pain I caused our little girl Payton. They should be ashamed of themselves. DON’T USE IT!!!

  52. We put Sergeants flee and tick on my 9lb silky poo…she has had all the same symptoms and reactions of the above listings. We have given her 5+ baths with dawn dish soap over the past day…been giving her baby aspirin, benadrly and a nerve relaxer (from the vet) as well as a steriod shot from the vet and still she is nipping at herself, uncomfortable, irritable and can’t sleep…how long has this lasted for other victims? what more is there to do? I just want to know when she will be okay – i just feel so bad for her she is so sad and miserable 🙁 I want to CEO and all staff for this company to put this product on their pet…if you can’t trust and use your own product it shouldn’t be on the market – this is ridiculous

  53. I just got back from taking my 11 lb cat to the vet. She is on an IV and the Dr. said it’s not looking good for her. I adopted a kitten from the SPCA on Wednesday, and late that night I noticed the long haired kitty had fleas. So, thinking I’m being a good, responsible pet owner, I ran to Walmart (as that was the only place open) and bought Sergeant for her. I didn’t notice any sypmtoms thats night as I contributed her lack of appetite and vomitting to the stress of a new kitty. Well by 3 am this morning, she was still vomitting and shaking her back leg, so as soon as the vet opened I took her there. I did wash her last night in Dawn soap because she kept trying to scratch at her neck, so I assumed that 24 hours with the medicine on her was good enough to work… well, now I’m waiting to find out if I killed my cat by putting this poision on her! I’m beside myself with utter grief and guilt… I tried to do something positive, adopt a kitten, and be proactive with the fleas… now I might have to bury my cat. This just isn’t fair or ethical. I have a $524 vet bill, and Sadie might not even make it through the night. Who are these people that allow this to be sold? Sadie was my first cat so I didn’t check this website until the vet told me how unsafe that product is. If only I knew…

  54. I used this product on my cat. I don’t have the money to take him to the vet, so I’ve been bathing him in Dawn Dish soap giving him benodryl. He has been foaming at the mouth since I used the product on him, and acting very strange. He is very lethargic, and just lays around in his litter box. This morning I woke up to him EATING from his litter box. All the vets I’ve called says this is not uncommon and judging by his behavior, Sergeant’s Silver probably gave him brain damage. Any ideas? Contact me at [email protected]

  55. I applied sergeant’s sliver on my 7 month old yorkie on monday and he started running around the room trying to take it off. the next day i bathe him because he was scrathing himslef all over he looked so uncomfortable after I dried him up I realize he had a rash on the spot where I appplied the liquid I immediatly call his vet and they told me to bring him in when I told them what I had put on him they were shocked and said don’t ever put that on him again. they did blood work on him, they also took his temperture which was 102. They told me to bathe him in dawn dish soap for 2 days to take out the oils from his skin and fur, and they gave me medication called (Glenhaven A/3C conditioner it has hydrocortisone 1% ) which I have to apply on his fur and skin once a day every other day until the rash disappers. I already see results it’s not as red, but he is very sad, not active, he hides under my desk something he never did, and I use to have a very active yorkie puppy, I feel so bad to see him like this. the vet said he should be better in a couple of days. I can believe this company sells this garbage !!!

  56. Just use Sergeant’s flea med on my yorkiepoo.. he is having a hard time breathing, rolling around, trying to throw up, and eating grass..googled it and found this website. We have bathed him in Dawn and given him benadryl. Anymore suggestions? My poor baby in bad sick.

  57. I had purchased Sergeants flea drops for my 3 cats. Sweet Pea is around 3 months old, Sugar is about 7 yrs old & our latest is 1 1/2 yrs old with 5 2 week old kittens.I read the warning labels on of sort said would be harmful to mothers or to any our our cats. I came home from work fining sweet oe behing the dryer shaking in pain and also in stiff position, Suagr was on the window deal but when she got up to walk she was in so much pain on her back caused her to hardly walk , the squickers the mother cat so far not showing harm to her kittens but if does effect feeding , it will harm the kittens. At this point we are worried due to the harm that this company has caused we wantd a resolution. All the company customer service can say is to take them a bath which we did do before we called , and they gave us a case number said thats all they can do. They know its a harmful product why would they allow our pets to be harmed
Damage Resulting = This product has put our pets into a stressful situation, now we are awaiting the outcome on our 5 kittens I really want to help owners out pets and animals suffering from cruelty

  58. I am so up set Me and my Husband applied the sergeants silver flea and tick ointment too on my 6 month old chihuahua/ Beagle. And i cant believe that she is doing the same thing. I wished that I had looked at this web site a lot sooner. I gave her two baths/Benodryl pain med that she got from the vet. Shes miserable shes not her self scratching, shaking her head, wandering around the house, hiding scared like I,m going to do something to her. Shes eating fine no vomiting. You can tell that shes not my little Shea. And I am very heated right now. It brings tears to my eyes to read that everyone’s pets are going through the same thing its so sad. And the Media should know about this.

  59. While on vacation, we noticed a flea on our 6 year old chihuahua. We didn’t have our regular prescription flea medication with us so we bought the Sergeant’s Silver Flea and Tick topical drops and applied it. Within a couple of hours, our baby was crying, shaking, twitching and very anxious. I found this website (too late) and did more research. I was up all night with him, bathing him in dishwashing liquid and giving him water and Benadryl. I had to hold him all night to keep him calm. Thank goodness, I didn’t apply any to our newest 14 week old puppy, even though the directions say it’s safe to apply to dogs 12 weeks and older. It’s been four days now and he’s finally beginning to act like himself again. I can’t even believe there have been deaths, seizures and even YouTube videos showing examples of our pets suffering because of these legally sold “treatments.”

Something needs to be done to prevent these companies from selling this poison to our four-legged family members!! I plan to continue my research and do what it takes to shut this business down!

  60. Additionally, things won’t change if we don’t take action. Please save the packaging from the medication as there is information on it that the agencies below will need.

PLEASE report your animal’s adverse reactions to the specific medication to the National Pesticide Information Center at 1-800-858-7378 or go to the following website for more information:
    http://npic.orst.edu/contactus.html

Also, report flea or tick product problems to the FDA’s Consumer Complaint Coordinator for your area. The list of numbers can be found here:
    http://www.fda.gov/Safety/ReportaProblem/ConsumerComplaintCoordinators/default.htm

We all need to do this for our four-legged family members. If we don’t protect them, it seems nobody else will.

  61. And keep in mind, most of our pets are NOT having an allergic reaction – they are being POISONED! These are strong and dangerous pesticides.

  62. I just took my little long haired Sugar in to the vet, they are keeping her to run some IV’s. She started rolling on the ground and frothing at the mouth. Then came the wimpering and crying, no sleep all night and now she seems like she has phycosis or something, somewhat like a wild meth addict. I have been in tears for hours…..I feel so guilty I just hope they can fix my baby. Those Bastards that make this crap! I am getting a hold of PETA today to see what can be done…Please pray for my 3 pound sugar.

  63. I gave my two dogs, almost 6 year old Rat Terrier and almost 5 year old Dachshund and Yorkie mix both weighing around 16 pounds, a flea treatment the evening of the 16th. I bought Sargent Silver. Shortly after I treated the RT, he started sneezing and a cough, being dumb I didn’t think about it being related to the flea med. Though he never done that before. I went to bed and got up yesterday morning and found where he had been vomiting, shaking, his back leg keeps going out straight like he is having a fit or something. I have been giving him benadryl and have given him two baths with Dawn. He is still having problems with walking and his leg jerking out behind him. He keeps itching in spots, though I have checked him and find nothing on him. My Dach/Yorkie is not as bad. She too vomited but not till yesterday. Along with itching she is having problems sitting still. Normally when I cook dinner she is under foot. Yesterday I cooked bacon and she was no where to be found. She is sitting a for longer periods today but still does not seem herself.
I have been laid off for awhile and was trying to save a few $. Now my babies are suffering.

  64. I am so disgusted after reading this website. I gave this to my 7 week old kitten that I rescued. I gave her the stuff for 6+ weeks and 2.2lbs-5lbs on 8/22. She was meowing a lot last night and she just wanted to be held. She hasn’t meowed since we got her. Then tonight when I got home, she just kept meowing and itching and licking herself. She also has two small patches on her shoulder blades where there is no hair. After reading this website, I gave her a bath in dawn dish soap. She really freaked out when I gave her a bath 🙁 I really hope it helps, she seems so little and miserable. As much as I love her I dont know if I could afford to pay a vet bill of $600 like everyone else on here has, for a kitten I just rescued. ANY advice for a 7 week old kitten would be greatly appreciated. I dont know if she is too little for Benadryl?

  65. After three Dawn baths, benedryl, and a cool environment, it looks like my Lucy will survive. It also looks like I was lucky. Has anyone received a satisfactory response from Hartz? From reading the posts here, it appears reports of adverse reactions go down a black hole. There’s a site called http://www.lawyersandsettlements.com/articles/14143/sergeant-flea-tick-gel-side-effects.html where it appears there are lawyers ready and willing to sue. Personally, I would be happy if they took this poison off the market and reimbursed me for my vet bill. Erika mentioned Sargent Silver will pay for your vet bill if your vet contacts them and your pet is not under 9 pounds. If anyone has actually had their vet bill reimbursed, I’d love to know how they did it. I’ll check back. Hartz is SO lucky my Lucy didn’t die. There is no reimbursement on this planet that would be acceptable.

  66. HARTZ GOLD: on 20 lb mix breed dog, redness on area where applied, pet unable to get comfortable and sleep. sudden startle when he starts to fall asleep unless he is being cradled and stroked. Then he seems to be able to rest. bathed him twice, applied cortizone cream (helps) and benadryl tablet in a piece of meat every 4-6 hours. Going to keep en eye on his eating and drinking to be sure he’s doing so. Will watch another 24 hours or so to see if he has improvement. Any other symptom and we’ll bring to vet. So far he has no other symptoms, is active, and alert..just cant seem to settle in to sleep without being stroked.

  67. WOW i wish i had looked up sergeants silver flea and tick spray before i bought it. I purchase this crap because i have 7 cats and they where infested i couldnt aford to treat them all with vet recamended stuff i put this on all my cats how ever 4 of them are doing just fine my oldest cat i think hes a yr has become verry lazey compared to his activity before another kitten 4 mos old is so under weight now weighs about 2 pounds and verry lazy most times just lays there and looks at you and the other cat 4 mos old a few days after using this medicine he got so ill and showed up with open swores he made chewing on his legs a day later they ozzed white stuff took him to vet they didnt know what was wrong with him he died 2 days later at the vets office i just dont know what or if anything can be done about the other 2 that may have had a reation because its been about a week sence i used the spray this should be recalled

  68. Like most here I wish I had read this earlier. Put this on my 4 month old Great Pyrenees and same thing, he immediately was uncomfortable and scratching and seemed very restless. I gave him a bathe the next day and he eventually got a little better. Benadryl did wonders for him thankfully. Please do not buy this stuff, I was trying the stuff out because i saw it and figured why not for the price, boy was that a mistake!

  69. This afternoon I dosed my 7 year old Shih Tzu with this product, and you guessed it? Scratching / Whining / Hiding in the bedroom. I found this site and obviously panicked so called my vet. He had just started to use this product himself. He gave her an anti-inflammatory injection to settle her. I’m watching her now trying to get comfortable on her bed and she is in all sorts of bother. Circling and circling and she can’t settle. She’d better be OK or there will be hell to pay.
    I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY SELL SUCH A PRODUCT…..

  70. OH WOW IM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS SITE…I WAS GONNA USE THIS SERGEANTS SILVER…I HOPE AND PRAY THAT ALL THE ANIMALS MAKE A FULL RECOVERY…GOOD LUCK TO YA ALL.

  71. DO NOT USE!!! so pissed at myself for using this and SOOO glad that i noticed my 65lb huntaway acting wierd right after i applied sergaents and immediately found this site. he was dfinately having reactions immidiatately. i found this site and bathed him twice with dawn less than 30 mins after application. my pup seems fine now thank god. I am so angry that i used this product and will definately be calling to complain

  72. I just used this crap on my dog. He has had it on for one day and is flipping out! He is biting his back, whining and in constant pain. He is twitching and trying anything to get relief and cant! This is outragous that this product can still be out there. I see posts here from so many other pet owners that are from a year ago… This is too long and they need to be stopped from this happening to anyone else’s animal. Are they fricken crazy? Where did they test this shit, obviously not on any dogs because they all go nuts once they have it. I hope the benedryl I gave my border terrier will start to kick in. Its off the vet tomorrow to try and get this dog some relief after 2 washes with lots of soap, he is still the same…. They have runined my dog and maybe his life for profit! Sons of bitches!!!!

  73. I just used this horrendous product which is pretty much like putting acid on your dog. We used the flea and tick medicine for dogs under 9 lbs. i have a miniature pincher dog who is 5 lbs. We used this product on her and a couple minutes later it all went down hill. She was running around breathing strangely, biting and scratching her back and rolling on the floor like crazy trying to get this product off her poor little back. We followed the instructions precisely, what we did not think of was looking online to see what others said about this product before we used it, this was a huge mistake!!!! our poor dog was miserable so we had to take her to the vet they gave her a bath and two shots, and i noticed when i got her back her whole back where we applied the topical medicine was really red, almost like it was toxic and burned her poor little skin, we spent over $100 at the vet, and the only thing we could do was give her a 1/4 of a tablet of benedryl to help with the itching. She was miserable for three days after that, acting really weird just laying around trying to scrath her back, not wanting to eat or go outside or play, this was a horrible experience, nothing hurts worse then watching your dog suffer all because you used a product that is suppose to help them not hurt them. I am appalled that this product is sold on shelves in stores, I am furious with this company because i have read so many negative reactions to this product, how in the hell can they still sell this stuff reading all the problems it has called, i have even read in some cases it causes long term nerve damage and can even kill your pet! Why has something not been done to get rid of this companies horrendous products that hurt our animals and why have they not done anything even with all of the problems that have been happening. PLEASE DO USE THIS PRODUCT ON YOUR PETS!!!!! IT MAY LOOK LIKE A GREAT PRODUCT BUT IT IS JUST LIKE PUTTING ACID ON YOUR PETS BACK!!! What you can do is log a complaint about this product on consumer affairs please do it so something can be done about this crappy company and this crappy product, they will not refund your money you spent on your vet bill or do anything, I am surprised that they do not have a law suit filed against them, after reading everything about this product. If you need flea and tick medicine please go to your vet and get it from them do not put your animal in danger by using this product it is not worth it money wise. Thanks, Nick

  74. I just used the Hartz silver squeeze on my 7mth old kitten last night she is doing nothing but licking the spot and acting like her nerves are shot she can barely walk and she is shaking her paws like crazy, If anything happens to my baby Ill sue the shit out of them assholes!!!!!!

  75. I, unfortunately, have applied Silver Flea and Tick to my two dogs after seeing a flea on my boxer. Both dogs are itching like crazy and I can’t touch their backs (where this was applied) without them cringing. I will go home at lunch and bathe them with Dawn liquid soap(use the original as it is safe for animals). I will also give them Benadryl to help ease the reaction.

  76. I cannot believe this!!! My poor little shiffon is suffering so badly after using sergeants oatmeal shampoo and the flea and tick topical ointment!! My daughter found a flea on her late in the afternoon so I called my vet (which is where I think she got fleas from in the first place because it is the middle of the winter and that is the only other place that she has been other than home) and they said they could give her some revolution but I also have a beagle who has never been to that vet and they could not give me anything for her. She did suggest that Agway sold Frontline which she said works well. Being that we were in the middle of a winter storm I told the vet tech that we would just pick up frontline for both of the dogs. Well this was at 4:50 and we were not aware that Agway closed at 5:00. My husband did not make it there in time so I tried to call the vet again just to get treatment for the shiffon because I didn’t actually see any fleas on the beagle but low and behold, their office was closed as well. Desparate to relieve our baby of the bugs he went the grocery store and bought the sergeants. She would have been much more comfortable with the bugs!! WHY IS THIS STUFF STILL BEING SOLD??!!

  77. I have used the sergeant flea & tick in the red tube on my Chihuahua twice now. It wasn’t till the second time that we noticed the tick that our dog got in her back leg after we used it.
It looks like she is trying to scratch while trying to walk at the same time.
At first that is what we though it was, until after the second time 2 month later we used it again and the same day it was applied she started with the same behavior.
It is if it affects her nervous system.

It wasn’t until this second time I decided to look it up on the internet and found this web site. Thank you so much.

How unfair of a company to know this can cause this much harm or any harm and tell us to use it. I only applied a few drops because I leery anyway about putting a chemical on my dog anyway. What if I applied the whole amount as recommended.

I hate to think what would of happened.

  78. This stuff is seriously poison. I put some on my dog and within 30 min he was going crazy! He could not settle, was eating grass like crazy, rolling around… etc I called the emergency vet and they said to wash him with dish soap and rinse him well. They said to repeat this process 5 times. I was also to get him childrens benedryl to help with the itching and also to help him settle down and sleep. My dog almost died because I used this stuff. Since then, I don’t use any chemicals on my dog. Instead, I treat my yard and use a flea comb everyday. My vet said that after having a major reaction like that it weakens their system and makes them more prone to react to other flea medicine. This stuff should definitely be taken off the market. I have no idea how it is still being sold.

  79. We have two grown cats, that got fleas from an outside dog of the neighbors, We purchased Hartz Ultragaurd OneSpot for cats and kittens. Nunu did not react to the drops, but Bella has been lethargic and barely eating and has lost weight, we bathed her with Dawn to get the medicine off of her and are bathing again now, these companies must be made to realize these are like children to us and they are telling us to put poison on them that will kill them, I know if my cat dies from this, I will sue Hartz behond their comprehension!

  80. If you love your pets never put sergeant’s flea and tick on them or any other over the counter products. I put it on my two dogs at 6:30 a.m came home at 5:00 p.m and my dog which usually greats me at the door was barely unable to lift his head to see who came in. My other dog was outside made a unusual noise to come in was scratching nonstop and vomited foam within an hour. I called the number on the box and suggested I wash them with dawn dishwashing liquid. My one dog still was itchin non-stop and i gave her benedryl which helped. Both dogs appear exhausted because they were in excruciating pain all day when I was gone for the day. I thought i was using a safe product. If you ever give your pet medication or a new product given by a vet be sure to be home to observe if there is any adverse effect. It could save your pets life and save alot of heart ache. After all we are their pet parents and they rely on us like a child would.

  81. I CANT BELIEVE THIS PRODUCT IS STILL ON THE SHELVES!!!!!! DO OUR DOGS HAVE TO START DYING FOR ANYONE TO DO SOMETHING! I HAVE A MALTESE AND A SHITSU… I PUT THE OIL ON THEIR BACKS LIKE IT SAID TO DO, WITHIN AN HOUR BOTH MY DOGS WERE GOING CRAZY. ITCHING, RUBBING THEIR HEADS ON THE FLOOR, RUNNING AROUND CRAZY… WHATS IN THIS THAT CAUSES THAT REACTION. I FEEL HORRIBLE CAUSE I THOUGHT I WAS DOING A GOOD THING FOR THEM….. NOW I SEE THIS COMPANY CANT BE TRUSTED. LUCKILY I FOUND THIS WEBSITE AND SAW ALL THE DOG OWNERS REACTIONS AND THEIR ATTEMPTS AT SOLUTIONS TO THIS PROBLEM. I GAVE THEM BENEDRYL AND GAVE THEM A BATH WITH DAWN SOAP… NOW IM MONITORING THEM TO SEE HOW THEY REACT. THIS IS HORRIBLE, DOG OWNERS SHOULD BE WARNED!!!!!!

  82. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!!!!!! I used the Sergents Silver drops on my 8 month old Calico cat “Tic”. Unaware of the danger of this product and low on money I bought it and treated her about 1pm. By 2:30pm I begin to notice my cat becoming off balance and incoherant. By 7pm she was screaming in pain. I washed her in dawn liquid soap and she begain shivering and running a fever.I called the 800# on the box and recieved no help, they were more concerned with taking down my name and number than offering any real help. They said they werent vets and couldnt tell me what to do. At about 1:30am she woke up screaming unconsolably. I tried to calm her and hold her but she acted like she didnt know who I was and begain screaming an scratching me. As I put he down she darted off and fell down the stairs at my house….all the way. She was delirious. The next morning she couldnt walk, slipping and sliding across the floor and walking around aimlessly. I’ve given her benadryl and washed her agian. She been sleeping most of the day and I have been giving her water with a medicine dropper. If this is “just an allergic reaction” dont these peaople realize that this is happening to often?? This product needs to be removed from the shelve. I’m praying my cat makes it.

  83. OK well heres one good story. I DID read this blog before applying a product called TRiForce which contains a 40% mix of Cyphethorin.
A full 1.5ml dose was to be put on our 10lb Pomeranion. Thank goodnes I goggled first. Thank you to all the people who posted here. One little life was sparred.

    Blessings

  84. I used Sergeants Silver flea medicine for dogs on ONE of my dogs who seed to have a flea problem. He didn’t react to the medicine except he couldn’t stop scratching the area. My cat, however, seems to be dying. He must’ve licked it off of my dog. He is twitching and drooling and panting. All things cats shouldn’t do. My other dog is drooling a river and very lethargic. We have a big vet trip ahead of us. I washed all of them with Dawn just in case, but I’m just so upset that this is happening. I will never use a topical flea product again.

  85. I could not afford a vet due to losing my job recently and my dog got a bad case of fleas. I was browsing the market and found Sergeants Silver Flea and Tick Spray for dogs. I read the bottle first and thought why not give it a try. I noticed as I started spraying my 80lb German Shepherd mix he was backing into a corner. He has never done this before when giving him medication whether by mouth or a spray that was other things vet prescribed or vet recommended. I did not get vet advice this time which is my fault. Well when I got down to my dogs paws as it said to spray his paws he held his paw up as if it was hurting him and further backed into the corner wall to get away from the spray. I knew then something isn’t right. He’s trying to tell me something. Well I decided to look up this product and viola landed on this site. I read all of the entries and stories here only 1 success story out of all of the others. After reading the stories I went with my gut instinct and followed what other people had to do via the vet and washed the stuff off my dog immediately. However, I did noticed while bathing my dog to rid of this chemical it seemed his back leg was giving out. Like he couldn’t stand right all of a sudden. He was trying to run away. I kept him there to wash him off. I washed and washed until it was washed off. Hopefully it will not further harm my dog since it had only been on for 5 minutes and washing it off right away. I am definitely keeping an eye on him over the days few days from today. I really hope he does not have any further health problems from this product. I will keep you all informed if anything further changes. If so, I will be sure to make a case of it and be heard including all of the other stories here. It’s a shame how the FDA is supposed to be there for our health and safety as humans, but what about pets? There are state pet regulations which I think they need to better our FDA regulations and guidelines for our pets to ensure their safety and health when it comes to products such as this within reach in our every day markets!

  86. I used this on my 1 yr old kitty a few days ago 6/11 and it made her so sick. She is still bouncing off the walls and throwing up. It almost killed her but it didn’t kill one flea. I feel so terrible that I trusted a product sold on the shelf and ended up hurting my precious kitty. Why are they still allowed to sell this???

  87. poor Tidbit. we put Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick on Tibby’s shoulders yesterday. Regrets abound. it’s been 24 hours of shaking, twitching, squeaking, crying, confusion, rippling skin, burning up with fever, 11 pounds of anguish. fortunately, we washed her immediately when the symptoms began, using Aveeno oatmeal bar soap. don’t know if that helped, but she seemed a little soothed. we held her all night long, let her sleep in our bed for the first time ever, fearing she would die if she slept alone… gave her a half benadryl and then small pieces all day today, wrapped up in deli meat. she couldn’t seem to walk, would just sit, not jump, not play, very strange behavior for this dog. thank goodness for this website. we never would have figured this out. we thought it was a splinter in the foot or whatever. but it was Sergeant’s on sale at Albertson’s. we regret our money saving moment. should have stayed with Frontline. this little one will make it, she’s improving every hour. but our thoughts go out to those who are suffering through. why is this still on the market? isn’t there something to be done to stop the sale of this Poison? we had no idea. trying to spread the word now. good luck to all…

  88. I wish I would have looked at this website before putting our poor old dog thru this agony! He has all the same symtoms as all of your pets. I went to touch his tail tonight and he screamed in agony! I am going to try the benedryl like some of you said, unfortunatly its a long holiday weekend and the emergency vet wants a 108.00 to walk thru the door.
These comments are going back to 2009 WHY IS THIS STILL ON THE MARKET!!

Good luck to the rest of you hope all our babys make it.

    1. Rhonda – the entire site dates back to 2002, and I created it based on an experience we had in 2001, and this has been going on long before I started this site.

  89. This has been going on this long and nothing has been done, this is crazy! Have there been lawsuits anything to try to make them stop making this stuff? ITS ALL ABOUT THE ALMIGHT DOLLAR!
I talked to my vet this morning they want and copy of this forum for there records they only knew of hartz causing these problems. They are going to let all there clients know and do some reporting!

  90. My room mate just bought this stuff, and unfortunately I was not with her when she did. BUT I have to do my research before I give ANYTHING to my cat and kittens. After reading all these reviews, I refuse to put this crap on ANY of my cats. I just wonder, why isn’t this stuff off the market yet?? I think I will have a talk with my local PETA group, as they try to keep pet-harmful things off the shelves in our area. I encourage others to do the same! Is the life and/or health of your pets WORTH saving money? My room mate said she paid like $4 at the dollar store.. I swear by Frontline Plus, and will be personally returning this “death-drop” back and getting what I know won’t hurt my babys.

  91. my beautiful cat, bella, died yesterday afternoon from this product. my daughter called me at work, sobbing hysterically, to tell me that the cat had been sick since she and my son had put flea stuff on, but that, now, she was getting worse fast. i left work immediately, and called my vet on the way home. by the time i got to my house, about 25 minutes later, bella was dead.

from what i understand her death was horrific; my kids told me that she wasn’t meowing or yowling in pain, but screaming. my poor kids had to watch in horror as their pet of twelve years died before their eyes. traumatized is an understatement.

i do not understand how this product can still be on the market … oh wait, yes i can: money.

we want our cat back. we miss her.

  92. My husband used Sergeant’s on our cat Coda and within a few hours he was seizing and foaming at the mouth. We took him to the vet and the vet tried to give him something to stop the seizures. It didn’t work and we had to have our cat put down so he wouldn’t suffer. This product should be pulled of the shelves. I wish I would have read this website before I applied this medicine.

  93. I just put this crap Sergeants Silver squeeze on for cats ….

AND OMG MY KITTEN STATED ROLLING HIS SKIN WITH IN TEN MINUTES!!!!!
Also he tried licking it off I RIGHT AWAY STARTED WIPPING IT OFF THEN I GOT
ONLINE AND GOOGLED THIS CRAP AND SAW WHERE ONE PERSON USED DAWN SOAP TO WASH MY CAT THAT WAS SO HARD GOT ALL SCRATCHED UP BUT FOR MY KITTENS HEALTH I DID NOT CARE HE SEEMS FINE NOW ….
I gave him some warm milk and water he’s being playful but before I washed him he was FALLING OVER !!!! I promise if my cat gets sick I will take this company to court along with Walmart for having this poison IN STOCK !!!!! DON’T EVER USE THIS PRODUCT ON YOUR PETS!!!!!!!! It’s stressful seeing your pet in pain when you are just trying. To help them with a product thinking that will when in fact CAN KILL YOUR PET!!!!!!!

  94. So I put this on my cat, and when he felt it on his neck, decided to shake it off hard, and it was whipped back into my face. The next day my migraines began. The first lasted five days and included fevers and vomiting. Took another five days to recover, then shortly there after, another round, that lasted ten days… and it was ten days like nothing I have ever known. Horrible pain, body temp went from through the roof to so cold that my lips would turn blue (would get in the hottest bath I could and would still not get warm), and cycled back and forth every few hours. Just felt sick all the time and could not eat. I was completely incapacitated. Then things that have never happened to me in my 40 years of life. Hives, nail fungus, pink eye and then massive hair loss. It has taken me five months, but I think that I am finally healing from the last of the symptoms now, but I feel like my memory has been effected as well.

This stuff is literally just poison. Don’t bring it into your home. Please.

  95. Well, I just spent all night worrying about my cat. After giving her Sergeant’s Silver, she became lethargic, starting shaking, and stopped eating. I washed the product off of her 6 hours after putting it on. She finally went to sleep in my lap (and wouldn’t leave) at 9 this morning. It is 6:30 p.m. now, so a full 24 hours has gone by. She just ate her at least half of what she normally does. She is coming out of it without going through what some of you folks have. I consider her lucky. I will let the company know what happened, however I plan on taking the remaining product back to Safeway for a refund. I will let the manager know about the dangers of this product and express that he might want to reconsider keeping this dangerous product on the shelf.
My heart goes out to all of you that had your animal get sick. It is absolutely terrifying waiting for POISON to get out of their systems. Talk to your grocery if you have time. Let’s get this off the shelf, one store at a time!

  96. My mother just purchased the Sergeants Silver for our cats. I am so glad that I found this site because we have 4 very young kittens in the house. I know that it is going to cost more but I am going to get the good stuff. I have also noticed that one of my dogs have been having seizures. This has all started to happen recently and I think that it is from the Pet Amour that we put on them. I live on 10 acres and I am on a limited income we treated out back yard where the dogs stay most of the time but when they come in we run a flea comb over them and spray the fleas with alcohol to slow/kill them. Any ideas of what we can do on a large scale to keep the flea away? Please any help would be appreciated.

  97. I stumbled upon this link as I was trying to figure out why my 2 cats were runnning like pumas around the house and pouncing everywhere like they are on crack!! They have been acting super out of the ordinary hyper since I treated them with this junk yesterday!! I should have known better than to try something without looking it up first! I pray to God that my kitties don’t have the worst coming… I just bathed them with a warm wash rag in Dr. Brunner’s Magic Soap (Organic soap) and am about to give them a tablespoon of of Pumpkin Puree to detox them if they have ingested any of that crap while bathing themselves. I did notice they were bathing themselves immediately (after dosing at the back of the head) and excessively all over….

Thankfully they now seem much calmer since I bathed them, hope my babies are okay I love them and they are super sweet! ugh what a piece of crap product! At least the fleas are gone… not sure it will be worth it in the end to have gone this route with so many problems…. will come back and post if it doesn’t get better….

  98. I put Sergeant’s Silver on my cat a good….3 hours ago. And she hasn’t had any symptoms. She groomed herself a little while ago and is laying down. Thankfully, she isn’t scratching so much and she is finally able to lay down without pulling her fur out from all the scratching. This product may not be the best out there, but as far as I know, she is fine and that’s all I want for my baby.

  99. Omg im so glad i came on here i have a 3 month old kitten that i love! her name is Toothsy, and i bought some flea shampoo for baby kittens to bath her and after i was done i looked for the Sergeats silver box i had bout few weeks ago to apply on her but for some reason i always had a bad feeling ao i just never did, so right when i was bout to do it i had opened it already i decided to google it and i found this, i feel realife i got to hear about this before i harmenth my Toothsy but i am so sad to hear yalls stories and i am incredible sorry.

  100. for me it to late i put a tube last night on my cat and today she past away during the night do to that and the other 2 are not feeling good

  101. As with so many here. I used a sargents product on my 5yr old German Shepard. I put it on at 7:30 at night almost right away she started running around all crazy but within a few minuets she went to not being able to stay still for more than a few seconds. This went on for like 4hrs when I started looking up what it could mean and this is what I found. At 12:00am about 41/2 hrs after I first put it on I gave her a bath and washed her with the dish soap 2x then gave her Benadryl 1mg per her body weight cause that part I already knew but it help cause after about 15 to 20 minutes she finally laid down and went to sleep. Thank you to all that posted cause it help me know what I needed to do to help her.

  102. Wow I put this stuff on my cat. He has been a little more antisocial, but not sick or anything like is on here. I hope he doesn’t get worse.

  103. I put this deadly medication on my three dogs on Saturday night and they all began throwing up, one could hardly walk. We bathed them, fed them raw egg, etc trying to get them better. Two days later and they are still super sensitive grabbng their ears and running in circles from pain. My dogs are my babies they are part of our family and I feel that this product should be banned. Hartz’s neglience has caused too much pain and death to too many animals and I feel that the FDA should remove this product from stores. I signed the Petition above and I am going to contact the better business bureau tomorrow as well as try to contact the FDA. Don’t know if it will do any good but a compay should not be selling an item that they know is dangerous and deadly to anyone. I think it should be criminal since they have known for years now that their product is deadly.

  104. I just used this CRAP on my dog yesterday and Thank God I only put a couple on drops on his neck & OMG he started acting CRAZY Immediately!!!! I bathed him as soon as I could get the water in the bath tub and he has been running around a nervous wreck!!! How can this garbage be allowed to be put on the shelf & sold if it is so dangerous for animals!!!! I have given him Benadryl last night & today and he is still having jerking problems in his hind leg & ears!!! I do not know what else to do for him!!!! These people need to pay for what they have done to these animals!!! I have bathed him twice & he seems to be more at ease when I am holding him and rubbing him…..I hope someone can tell me something to do to make him not so on edge!!!!! I Hate this company for the torture they have put these animals through and I’m going to see if anything can be done about this!!! But as I can see alot of people has had this problem and I’m sure if anything could be done someone would have already done it so…..Someone please respond if you know of something I can do to calm my pet it will be Greatly appreciated.

  105. i sprayed my 8 year old cat with this Sargent silver spy for cat and he got really sick i took him to the vet were they put him on life support 3 days latter my poor boy died.. i cant believe this is happening my vet even said cause of death Sargent silver spray please don’t use any of their stuff it harmful to animals.. may you rest in peace Mary we love you so much u will be missed rip 02=02=2013 daddy love and cars for u so much im sorry that this happened to u… only if i know i feel as if it was done by my hand im so sad people please help me to get this taken off the shelves….419two3one74two0 call if u have any info on how to do this

  106. Please don’t put any sergeant’s silver products on your cat,or dog!….We lost, both of our precious babies, within 3 weeks of each other….Our 2 cats were like our children…They couldn’t breath, and wouldn’t or couldn’
t eat..Be very careful what you put on your Loving Pet…):

  107. We applied this product to our cat last night at about 730, it was storming outside so we thought that was the reason she was acting scared and hiding under the bed. She woke us up in the middle of the night, she crawled up on the bed and she was shaking so bad the bed was shaking; she’s never like this sonwengot uomtomcheck on her, she acted terrified of us, normally she leans in when we reach to pet her, but she was trembling and pulling away. It took forever for me to get her in my arms and tried holding her and comforting her, my husband and I googled the product and came across this site, thank God! We took everyone’s advise and bathed her in dawn; she usually HATES baths but its like she knew we were trying to help her and she calmly let us bathe her. My poor baby! I stayed up all night loving on her and cuddling with her under our electric blanket and she soon fell asleep. Today she seems much better, I found where she had thrown up last night, I’m guessing before we got this junk off of her. Please DO NOT use this stuff!!!! It’s NO GOOD!!!!!! My little girl is my world and I know that’s how all other pet parents feel! We have to protect our fur babies!!!!!

  108. I am so glad I found this website. It is hard not to cry hearing all these stories, being a cat lover, especially of those who lost thier cats. The dogs seem to survive though suffer, harder on the smaller animal. If it helps anyone, I was about to buy the Seargent’s silver product for two 12 week old beloved kittens plagued with fleas. I am unempolyed and hard to afford the expensive products, looking for an alternative. But seeing your stories has stopped me from buying it and killing or at least making my kittens suffer. Better they have fleas than suffer or die from this product. I cannot imagine why in god’s name this product is on the market.
Perhaps the best answer is for all of you to take your stories not to the callous manufacturer, but the local retail stores that sell it. Given enough of that they might stop selling it.
Anyway, I thank you all on this website for alerting me, glad I checked before buying this crap.

  109. This just sickens me… We just treated all of our animals (5 of them, 2 dogs, 3 cats – two of which are elderly) with Sergeants Flea and Tick for Dogs and Cats. Fortunately 4 of the 5 show no signs of toxicity/poisoning. But even 1 pet affected in this way too much.. One of my elderly cats has become lethargic, will not leave the living room and will barely eat. I will not use this product ever again and can only hope that she begins to feel better and does not die due to use of this product. I’m guessing that we put the drops on them about 5 days ago and we have washed as much of it off of her as we can. Sickened that I may have contributed to making my cat ill or possibly even worse by using these drops. Never again.

  110. Please DO NOT buy ANY SERGEANTS SILVER products! I used the squeeze on for fleas ticks and Mosquitos for cats and in the middle of the night I saw that my cat was hunkered down in the floor unable to move, shaking and making a clicking noise having a seizure. I was so scared, I called the emergency vet and they confirmed it WAS caused by this product that it caused nuerological problems and tremors in animals. They suggested an immediate bath with dawn dish soap to remove any remaining product from getting into her system. They then have her medication to relax her muscles and symptoms. So far hours later, she seems to have gotten better, no shaking and has managed to pick at some food. I have 2 cats (brother and sister), the other wasn’t affected but he was bathed soon after. I read reviews on the product and similar and even some worse reports were made about their pets not only from this particular SERGEANTS SILVER product but just about every other in this brand too. I DO NOT RECOMEND PLEASE DO NOT USE! I’d also like to add that if anyone else have these same symptoms please take your pet to the vet instead of just bathing them so that they can relax the muscles and get some of the poison out of there systems I’m not sure just a bath would do for this. Thanks for reading. (:
