Sergeant’s Gold POISONED my dog !!!

Posted by kristina on October 17th 2008

Sergeant’s Gold Flea and Tick Squeeze-On for Dogs.
I applied this product to my dog as directed, and within hours she was vomiting, foaming at the mouth, drooling and had no control of her legs. I was NOT happy with this product AT ALL. Thank God she is okay now, after calling our vet and doing what she told me to do (bathe in DAWN dishsoap, and then give her fluids and chicken broth). I absolutely WOULD NOT RECOMMEND this product to ANYONE !!!
This was very scary for us and we don’t want anyone else to go through it.

I filed a complaint with the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU and SERGEANT’S. Anyone else who has had problems, PLEASE go to http://www.bbb.com and file a complaint, also. Maybe if enough people do this, someone will stand up and take notice and get this product OFF THE MARKET.

I applied the Sargeants Gold and within 5-6 hours my normally VERY CALM Shih Tzu was scratching, twitching, biting her foot, jumping and running from room to room. I tried washing the flea drops off and she whimpered and nipped at me the whole time. She is now spending the night under a sedative at the vet. How can a company see these complaints and continue to sell their product to pet owners??

I am yet another user of this product that sent my dog to the emergency hospital over nite. I spent almost $500 to save my dog. I filed a complaint and claim to
sergrants. To date they accept no responsibility, have offered me about $120.00. Any one with thoughts of a class action law suit???? Please let’s not let them continue selling this product.

I HAVE FOUR PETS THAT I USED THE SERGEANTS FLEA AND TICK SQUEEZE ON. I BOUGHT IT BY THEIR WEIGHT AND AGE. KITTENS,PUPPIES AND DOGS. I APPLIED TO MY TWO GROWN DOGS AND THEY ROLLED AND ROLLED TRYING TO GET IT OFF. THEY ACTED AS IF IT WAS BURNING THEM. I ALSO APPLIED IT TO MY CAT AND DASHHOUND. THE DASHHOUND CRYED AND CRYED.. FOR TWO DAYS! MY CAT FOAMED AT THE MOUTH AND SHAKING ALL OVER, SHE ALSO JUMPED INTO THE DOGS WATER BOWL!. I CALLED THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF THE BOX, THE LADY TOLD ME THAT THE CAT WAS ACTING THE WAY IT WAS BECAUSE IT DIDNT LIKE THE WAY IT TASTED AND BATHE HER IN DAWN DISH WASHING LIQUID FOR THE BURNING AND APPLY VITMEN E DROPS TO AFFECTED AREA. SHE SAID BECAUSE WHERE YOU APPLY THE PRODUCT WILL BURN A LITTLE.. THATS WHAT THE E DROPS WERE FOR. MY PETS WERE ON FIRE! BY THE THE TIME I GOT HER TO THE VET SHE HAD A 104 FEVER AND HAD WENT INTO SEZUIES. THE VET GAVE HER A STEROID SHOT AND SOME BENADRYL AND SAID FOR ME TO WATCH HER. THIS WAS 2 DAYS AGO. NOW HER HEAD IS SWOLLEN AND FILLS LIKE A SQISHY BALL. WE TOOK HER BACK TODAY. AT FIRST THEY THOUGHT SHE HAD WATER ON HER BRAIN BUT WHEN THEY TRYED TO DRAW IT OFF BUT ALL THEY PULLED OUT WAS AIR. THEY BANDAGED HER UP AND SHE HAS TO GO BACK IN THE MORNING TO SEE IF THE SWELLING COMES BACK. THEY HAVENT SEEN THIS IN A CAT BEFORE, SO THEY ARE UNSURE OF THE OUT COME. SERGEANTS POSIONED MY PETS. AND REALLY COULD CARE LESS. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING WITH THIER BRAND AGAIN!

I used the sergeants gold last night and all i got to say Im pobably gunna lose my dog over its she started foaming at the mouth we have bathed her 3 times and she is no longer foaming but I think she has some brain damage she will not come when shes called and shes not really moving. I have no money to take her to vet, we are in hard times and Wal-mart just fucked me over and has probably killed my kids pet.

I am so saddened by your story. We are seeing a dog this afternoon who was exposed by playing with another dog. We are hoping to save him, but are fearful. I hope you call the manufacturer and pull out a can of whoop-ass.

i am so sorry about that, my pet died from them and was goind through vomiting and heart failures. His kidneys broke down and sadly he died…… so i wish i could tell every pet owner the REAL truth.

I wish I had read all this yesterday before poisoning my dogs. We usually use Frontline on our dogs and had planned to take the dogs on a wooded hike and since it was Sunday, we weren’t able to get any Frontline from the vet….we decided to run by Walmart and get what we felt was their best protection for animals…got Sargeant’s Gold in varying weight packages and applied it to our dogs. Within thirty minutes our chihuahua was throwing up, frothing at the mouth non-stop and became fairly unresponsive. At that time, I remembered a friend having such an issue after giving her dog a flea treatment and remembered she had been told to immediately wash it off as much as possible. So I then bathed him and the other four dogs (all small dogs except for a 70lb Weimaraner) with dishwashing detergent. The chihuahua stopped throwing up but continued to drool for about two hours…but he did start becoming more responsive. I hadn’t noticed any other ill effects to the other dogs until later last night when our two dachshunds appeared to have some type of neurological tic going on….this went on all night and have continued today and we are heading to the vet here in a few minutes with them. One of them is also starting to lose their hair along where I put the line of Sergeants. I am thankful we caught this early and hopefully averted any long-lasting or damaging consequences due to us using this product. I got online today and have found an enormous amount of bad/sad stories of people using this. I’m in total agreement with the above comment…I just don’t understand how they can keep selling this stuff when they very quickly pulled the food off the shelves when it was an issue. This is just insane…..I wish retailers such as Walmart would at least pull this off their shelves…and the packaging be made to have huge warning signs on there about potential side effects and what to do when seeing signs of any side effects.

I have a question for those of you who have gone through this awful toxic experience with Sentry: After vet treatment, how long before the dog will be back to his old self?

I gave my beagle Sentry yesterday morning around 10am. By about 5pm I noticed he was panting. By midnight he was acting totally bizarre and restless, panting, biting his foot and itching. He also shredded some carpet in the bedroom when I wasn’t around.

I took him to the 24 hour hospital where they gave him some sedatives, a decontaminating bath, put him on an IV and fed him some charcoal. They did tests and all of his organs and blood count are normal. He hates the vet and howled the whole time. Eventually they said it was making it worse that he was there and to take him home.

I took him home and he seemed almost back to normal, though groggy. It’s now 6pm and he just seems uncomfortable and restless. He never has a hard time sleeping and he keeps getting up and changing spots over and over again. He also keeps nose diving to the carpet and rolling on his back, itching, and biting his foot. I called the animal hospital to ask them, since the behavior is better but not great, what should I expect. A doctor who wasn’t there last night defaulted to “the safest thing is to bring him back.”

He’s finally asleep right now and I think its started to come out of his system after pooping the charcoal a couple of times but I am worried about how long this neurological stuff will last. For those of you who have been through this nightmare, did you dogs get better? How long before they were back to normal?

Thanks so much for any information. Please email me at [email protected]

I bought Sergeant’s Silver (blue label) on my 7lb Maltese, about 45 minutes later he started acting funny, rolling on the floor, scratching at the area where we had put it on him. We bathed him with dog shampoo but it didn’t help much so we washed him again about 3 hours later and still no relief. I called my vet who said I should call Sergeant’s and see what they said. I called Sergeant’s they said we over dosed him! They said the product is not for use for animals under 9 pounds – on the box it said for animals under 12 lbs – nothing about more than 9 lbs but less than 12 lbs.- Please please please do not use this product on your pets. I feel horrible that I’ve caused my doggie anxiety, pain and itching all over.

DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! It should be taken off the market!

UPDATE: The dog that I posted about is still alive and kicking !! Although, she has suffered dramatic hairloss in the area where the medicine was applied…the hair will never completely grow back. She also suffered some brain damage. She is fine and not in any pain…she just has regressed back to being like a puppy, we had to work with her for housetraining all over again. But, she is a wonderful dog and we love her so much. We have taken a holistic approach to flea control and it is working !!! Chemical-free is the way to be…
