Tyler and Saila’s BAD Adventure

On Labor day morning I discovered that my Chihuahua Saila had fleas.  She is about 6 lbs. and of course I was concerned.  Tyler my other Chihuahua has never had any fleas, but I went to Wal-Mart since it was a holiday and I had not ever heard that these products were so bad, I bought Sargent’s Gold Flea and Tick treatment.  I applied the poison at around noon, thought all was well.  At around 3pm I noticed that Tyler was biting his back foot, and I looked at Saila and she was frothing at the mouth.  I rushed her to the emergency vet on call for $140.00 to hydrate her and give her a shot.  Tyler meanwhile seemed not so bad so I did not seek attention for him.  Since yesterday (tues.) Saila seems fine and now Tyler seems to be having a severe reaction to the poison.  He is twitching and biting his foot and has not eaten or drinking water in 24 hours.  He also is not going to the bathroom and is very lethargic.  He is now at the vet and I hope and pray that I have not done permanent damage to him.  Please WARN all people about this product.  I am going to tell Wal-Mart and have complained to sargents.  SHAME SHAME ON ANY PERSON CONNECTED WITH THIS COMPANY.  I have told my vet to put up warning signs.  PLEASE WISH TYLER A SPEEDY RECOVERY.  Sincerely, Celia Knight Rockland, ME

  1. Celia,
I know exactly what you are going through. I went through the same thing with my baby, Peewee (my story “Please Pray for Peewee). I felt so much guilt about my boy having to go through this since I was the one who put it on him. But you know what? We were only trying to help our pets…trying to give them some relief from the parasites. HARTZ and SARGENTS are the ones who should feel guilty. They are the ones who are still manufacturing and selling this poison…and they don’t even care. I would be willing to bet they don’t put this crap on their pets! Anyway, Peewee is doing well. He came home yesterday. I hope that your babies will get better as well. We can help the situation by telling everyone we know about the dangers of these products. Contact the stores in your area that sell this stuff and tell them about it and give them this Web site. Good luck. I will pray for your pets.

  2. I read Peewee’s story it was one of the 1st one’s I saw. I am really glad Peewee’s doing ok. Tyler is much better today. Very quiet though. I am just thankful that I have not done permanent damage, I hope. Thank you for your kind words. Celia Knight

  3. Hi Celia,

I’m posting today on behalf of Sergeant’s. I want you to know we are very sorry to hear about your experience. We do take this matter extremely seriously and want to hear from you. If you have not yet contacted the 24-hour consumer hotline at 800-224-7387, I strongly recommend you to do so. We want to hear how Saila and Tyler are doing and make sure they are now feeling better.

It’s important to remember that all flea and tick control products are pesticides. In order for these products to be as safe and effective as possible, they must be used precisely as directed. When you have multiple pets in your household, it is imperative they are kept separate for at least 24-hours to ensure that they do not groom on one another and accidentally ingest the product. It is also important to only apply the dosage intended for your dog’s weight class. Sergeant’s Gold is only formulated for dog’s starting at 9 pounds and is not intended for any dogs that fall under 9 pounds.

I encourage you visit “Look at the Label” http://www.lookatthelabel.com, an excellent tool for pets owners consisting of videos and tips on pre, post and after application of flea and tick control. I also invite you to watch a special message from the President of Sergeant’s, urging pet owners to take full advantage of this resource: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbONNAshrWo

Again, I am very sorry to hear about Salia and Tyler’s experience. We want nothing but your friends to be happy and healthy so please let me know if you have any questions at all. I would be happy to assist you further.
