I applied the hartz gold flea and tick to my dog today and it made her very sick. The scratching, restlessness, foaming at the mouth, vomiting really scared me. I called the vet and they said to bath her with dawn dishwashing liquid and wash that stuff of her. They also recommended call the emergency 800 # and they also said to wash it off and encourage her to drink. I hope she will be ok.
Last week I bought Hartz Plus, for my 2 cats. They were born 9-17-2001. On Sunday 8-17-2008 6:28 am one of them died from acute respiratory arrest after applying the Hartz Plus flea/tick medicine AS DIRECTED 2 days prior. She was ok at first and it seemed to be working. Then the next day she was a little lethargic and not eating as much, after watching her closely she began to return to her normal self. Then next evening the suddenly fell quite ill and wouldn’t eat or drink. all she could do was lay there. and groan. She was promptly bathed and bottle fed water and liquid food. Once again her condition improved. My wife and I took shifts watching her over the night so we could take her to the vet as soon as they opened. And all was well until about 6:00am. She began to have difficulty breathing. Without hesitation I rushed her to the emergency animal clinic as fast as I could. Speeding, not coming to complete stops, I was lucky to not get pulled over. I arrived at the emergency clinic 6:26 and she was admitted right away. we made it to about as far as the table when she started to have violent convulsions and making the worst wailing sound I have ever heard. She was rushed to the operating table immediately and died within seconds before much could be done to save her. Unfortunately the only bit of relief i could be given was an apology and a statement “We have had increasing amounts of Hartz related deaths”. Then the doctor didn’t even charge me for the services, which is very unlike the emergency animal clinic. They normally charge $96 just for walking in, which is a major detourant for those of us with low budgets, another reason we purchased Hartz, as apposed to Frontline as we would usually get. After this, I will NEVER use Hartz products, EVER AGAIN.
9-17-2001 – 8-17-2008
I have a beautiful 7 month old toy poodle and I almost lost him today because of the allergic reaction to Seargent’s Silver. I have always used Frontline with no problems but unfortunately he was due for another application and I didn’t have the Frontline. I decided to try one of the less expensive brands just to see. A half hour after I applied it he started running in circles crying and itching. I immediately bathed him and then called my vet. They said bath him in Dawn 3 times. After the second bath I rushed him to my vet. He gave him a shot of prednisone, benadryl and washed him again in a special shampoo. I have to administer 2 more doses of oral prednisone tonight and in morning. I brought him home and he was still itching and crying but now he is calming down in his bed but still itching some but at least he is not crying. The vet said to keep a close eye and any changes to call immediately. We think he will be OK but I will NEVER use that product again and Please don’t anyone else use it either. I feel terrible because I used the cheap stuff. NEVER AGAIN! I don’t care about the vet bill just my precious baby.
Our three cats came down with fleas this August 17 and in previous years we had used Frontline and it worked well. I sent my husband out for Advantage today at Pet Smart since there have been recent complaints of this years Frontline batch not working. I had one Frontline left from last year so I put it on the cat that I noticed fleas on and waited for hubby to return with meds to put on the other 2 before they became infested. He came home with this Hartz Ultra Guard Pro instead, probably since it was cheaper. I was wary of this wroduct as I had not used Hartz brand before, so I Googled the product and found BAD reviews, 1 star on all pet product sites. Then I found your site and felt ILL . I was that close to putting it on 2 of my precious babies. I have no doubt that it would have had extremely adverse reactions. I was just one of the lucky ones who found your website and took heed.
Tomorrow the Hartz is being returned….along with a printed copy of ALL of these posted warnings, to Pet Smart, to the manager. I am also phoning Hartz and posting as many links as I can to direct people to your website. Thanks to you MY cats are safe……I will help spread the word.
SARGEANT FLEA AND TICK SPRAY August 17th,2008
Gizmo is dead…and Mieko is dying…(update is now dead too)…they somehow were poisoned … I’m certain it was the flea spray..I sprayed them both two nights before at separate times hours apart because their battle with fleas was severe…Please warn any cat owners you know about Hartz/Seargents flea sprays they are deadly and should be banned…they contain deadly toxic chemicals and have to be administered to a “T” or it will certainly make your cat deathly ill or kill your pet which is more likely depending on the size of the cat…and that goes for dogs as well…I feel the company cares little about the wellbeing of animals otherwise there wouldn’t be such a product…it is not completely safe to administer…my cats are dying proof…after I administered the flea spray my female Black Point Himalayan cat fought profusely until she ran off hiding for two days… when I came home later in the evening around 9:30 pm i opened the front door to find her dead with my other cat by her side I think he found her and brought her out from where she was hiding…he wouldn’t leave her side…next thing I know he’s getting wobbly on his feet and he was lifeless before I knew it…I called the vets (but because I had no means to pay for it due to my limited pension after suffering a massive heart attack two years ago)…at that point was offered no help…one vet had a party to go to and was late…I think that was despicable and heartless…all the vets offices were closed for the weekend…So, I looked up information on the internet only to find others encountering the same problem I finally took it upon myself to hopefully find a way to keep him alive…I gave him first off some water via syringe because he would’nt eat or drink so i force fed him as well as a syringe of milk mixed with egg and gave him a bath with polmolive soap and wrapped him up and he lived through the night as i stayed by his side to maintain him all night…he seemed to be bouncing back then suddenly went lifeless again…I crumbled up some cat kibble to a fine dust and mixed it with the milk and egg…and syringed the liquid to him orally and suddenly I panicked because at that point he went into convulsions gasping his last breaths I administered immediately some water and soothed his throat because I may have caused him to choke and gave him water… He somewhat gained his breathing but started convulsing again screaming until he died at 5:pm August 17th 2008…
I will never buy another product over the shelf from sargeants or any other manufacture of these common toxic chemicals…It virtually did little or nothing with the fleas but ultimately killed my Himalayans consecutively….by putting trust in a well known manufacture unknown to myself of a deadly product is not only inhumane on their part but also criminal and negligent of not producing a fail safe product and high in toxicity…shame on you Hartz/Sargeant and whoever else manufactures this product for purely profit and not the wellbeing of the animal community….I find it utterly disgusting and heart wrenching…and of course I live alone without my little defenseless friends…If I had the money i’d spend millions to sue your #%^^^just to take away your right to sell this deadly product…If there is a petition out there I want to be on it and possibly be part of any lawsuit against these firms…They know they are getting away with murder and openly admit theres a problem with their products as one person put it [email protected] They haven’t got a call from me but when I find the number i definitely will call …As well I’m calling Customer Relations at Canadian Tire where I bought the product….and attempt to have it removed…
we had a beautiful 3 yr old cat ,white with long hair ,i applied this medicine first week in july and he developed a skin rash and became very ill, today is august 15 and we had to finally put him to sleep as he developed yellow jaundice from the medication he has continuously been under the care of a vet and we are very very sad to lose our cat, i am so angry right now i wish i had known the possible effects of this medication i would never have used it
We lost our most adorable dog, CHEETO this past Friday, June 27, 2008 to what we strongly know to believe, the Hartz 3 in 1 Reflecting Control Collar for Dogs. (UPC 3270004183) purchased at our local K-Mart store. Cheeto shared in all the
symptoms such as (green) vomiting, weakness, labored breathing and hair loss in bunches, just to name some of the symptoms. These symptoms all started after the collar was placed around his neck. He was always a healthy dog, that is until he was introduced to this poisonous collar which ultimately took his innocent life right before our eyes.
When I contacted the Hartz Company, they immediately took steps to help us and did not once deny that the collar was the instigator of the symptoms. I truly expected them to defend their product to be safe, but they did not argue with me regarding my suspicions of Cheeto being poisoned by their collar. They cooperated with me and were willing to
work with our vet to get Cheeto the help he so desperately needed. The problem with that is that the product they are manufacturing is so deadly that Cheeto passed away within minutes of calling the vet to make the antidote arrangements. These items are ultimately the deadliest of products and the symptoms come on so fast that they is no time to save them even once you know what you are dealing with and they certainly have NO business being on shelves in ANY stores to be sold to consumers to use on any living creatures.
The product is so unfit that the label actually states
HAZARDS TO HUMANS AND DOMESTIC ANIMALS What are they for, skunks, racoons, badgers, ???????????????? I believe that dogs and cats qualify as domestic animals and we the people as humans, so why in the world is the product(s) even allowed to be manufactured and distributed to be sold??????
Anyway, our precious CHEETO is forever gone and now the tears are all we have. We are left to live on this earth without him knowing that we placed the poison around his neck that ultimately took him to his early grave leaving behind 3 little boys to now resort to sitting next to his grave to talk to him and wish that they could pet him, hug him, walk him, run with him and just plain love him unconditionally, while their parents feel the
guilt of being the ones who actually placed the product of poison around the best friend and loyal companion they ever had. He was a member of our family. He was the foundation of our happiness and our world evolved around coming home to him every night to his wagging tail and unconditional love. Our family is now BROKEN all in thanks to HARTZ!!
At the very least, the Hartz products should be recalled from all shelves until they can prove their products to be safe. If they cannot place their products on the shelves without a warning of hazardous to humans and domestic animals then their products have absolutely no business being manufactured, it is no good for any living thing. Until they can develop and create a safe product to sell, they shouldnt be on the market!
Its time for the madness to stop I’m also a victim of Hartz products. My best friend Maxwell almost died from Hartz flea and tick drops. and now that i have been reading all the victims within the last two weeks i can’t let this continue.
I need anyone and everyone to contact me at 951-746-4111 so we as a team can stop this major company from killing animals. They fully understand what is going on because they have a victims department that only deals with this type of complaint. Also these major stores know what they are selling and the store I purchased my product from told me that they have tried to get it removed from the shelves because of all the problems they have had only to have it returned to the shelf two weeks later. What has America turned into.
I promised Maxwell if he lived ( and he did) i would never stop until this problem was fixed.
If you truly care about your family member (pet) you will help me put a stop to this madness.
Please read my storie Maxwell was 2 hours from death posted 7/29/08
I wish I had seen this site sooner.
My husband & I treated our cat Hunter, who spends a lot of time outdoors, with Hartz Ultra Guard Pro drops last night. I had been putting off going to the vet lately to get his Advantage drops, and I figured this might work until I could get to the vet.
What a mistake. When we put it on him he immediately acted as if it was bothering him and tried to start licking it off. He has never acted that way with his Advantage drops.
Today when I got home from work, I saw that he had spent most of the day inside (which is rare, unless he isn’t feeling well) and he was having trouble climbing our stairs. He was fairly lethargic, even when our kitten tried to play with him. His back kept twitching as if he was unable to control it.
Luckily we found so much information on these Hartz drops within a matter of minutes after seeing his symptoms, and he seemed almost delighted as we washed his fur with Dawn dishwashing liquid and a warm washcloth.
How could Hartz make such a terrible product? And isn’t it convenient that you cannot email your complaints through their website? You can call an 800 number from 9-5pm only, Monday through Friday or write a letter to their human resources department.
I think I will go to the Better Business Bureau with this one.
My heart goes out to those who have had similar problems, and worse, with these products. Very sad. I never in a million years would have thought you couldn’t trust Hartz products, but now I know better.
I’m a journalist working on a story about pet exposures to insecticides. If anyone would like to discuss the experience you’ve had with these chemicals, I would really appreciate the opportunity to talk with you. I have a dog myself and I’m very sorry to hear about these incidents. I can be reached at [email protected].
