Sargeant Flea & Tick Spray Killed My Two Cats

SARGEANT FLEA AND TICK SPRAY August 17th,2008

Gizmo is dead…and Mieko is dying…(update is now dead too)…they somehow were poisonedĀ … I’m certain it was the flea spray..I sprayed them both two nights before at separate times hours apart because their battle with fleas was severe…Please warn any cat owners you know about Hartz/Seargents flea sprays they are deadly and should be banned…they contain deadly toxic chemicals and have to be administered to a “T” or it will certainly make your cat deathly ill or kill your pet which is more likely depending on the size of the cat…and that goes for dogs as well…I feel the company cares little about the wellbeing of animals otherwise there wouldn’t be such a product…it is not completely safe to administer…my cats are dying proof…afterĀ I administered the flea spray my female Black Point Himalayan cat fought profusely until she ran off hiding for two days… when I came home later in the evening around 9:30 pm i opened the front door to find her dead with my other cat by her sideĀ I think he found her and brought her out from where she was hiding…he wouldn’t leave her side…next thing I know he’s getting wobbly on his feet and he was lifeless before I knew it…I called the vets (but because I had no means to pay for itĀ due to my limited pension after suffering a massive heart attack two years ago)…at that point was offered no help…one vet had a party to go to and was late…I think that was despicable and heartless…all the vets offices were closed for the weekend…So, I looked up information on the internet only to find others encountering the same problemĀ…I finally took it upon myself to hopefully find a way to keep him alive…I gave him first off some water via syringe because he would’nt eat or drink so i force fed him as well as a syringe ofĀ milk mixed with eggĀ  and gave him a bath with polmolive soap and wrapped him up and he lived through the night as i stayed by his side to maintain him all night…he seemed to be bouncing back then suddenly went lifeless again…I crumbled up some cat kibbleĀ  to a fine dust and mixed it with the milk and egg…and syringed the liquid to him orally and suddenly I panicked because at that point he went into convulsions gasping his last breaths I administered immediately some water and soothed his throat because I may have caused him to choke and gave him water… He somewhat gained his breathing but started convulsing again screaming until he died at 5:pm August 17th 2008

I will never buy another product over the shelf from sargeants or any other manufacture of these common toxic chemicals…It virtually did little or nothing with the fleas but ultimately killed my Himalayans consecutively….by putting trust in a well known manufacture unknown to myself of a deadly product is not only inhumane on their part but also criminal and negligent of not producing a fail safe product and high in toxicity…shame on you Hartz/Sargeant and whoever else manufactures this product for purely profit and not the wellbeing of the animal community….I find it utterly disgusting and heart wrenching…and of course I live alone without my littleĀ  defenseless friends…If I had the money i’d spend millions to sue your #%^^^just to take away your right to sell this deadly product…If there is a petition out there I want to be on it and possibly be part of any lawsuit against theseĀ firms…They know they are getting away with murder and openly admit thereĀ’s a problem with their products as one person put it [email protected] They haven’t got a call from me but when I find the number i definitely will call …As well I’m calling Customer Relations at Canadian Tire where I bought the product….and attempt to have it removed…

  1. i had my kitten just die a few days ago after I used Sergeants Skip-Flea and tick shampoo for cats on him. He was only 13 weeks and He was healthy before and dead within 12 hrs of treatment. i wrote them and email but who knows they probably wont care. Please stay away from this product and use your vet for flea dips if at all possible. Otherwise use vinager and water to treat fleas. Good luck all.

  2. I have two cats thats i treated for fleas, I left for 2 hours and when i got home i found blood everywhere, then i found one of my cats covered in blood and having violent seizures. i grabbed her and drove as fast as i could to the overnight emergency vet. I have never seen anything like this before and i didnt think she would make it to the hospital. once i got there, they grabbed her and treated her right away, they knew right away what it was. she stayed for 3 days and $1300. later she came home part blind. but alive. on the instructions from the hospital her final Diagnosis was Pyrethin Toxicity (which means the Pyrethrin is toxic). when i got home i read the lable on the Sergeants Flea and Tick spray. the bottle has a picture of a cat on it. well the first Active ingredient is Pyrethrins.I am not a wealthy person and i could not afford this. I used my rent money to save my cats life.
One of the vets told me she had been working there for 5 years and every week 1 cat comes in with this, caused from these toxic over the counter flea meds. these need to be removed and safe meds like frontline and advantage need to be more accessable. not everyone can afford to pay the vet to see your cat over fleas then pay $70 more for the meds.thats like going to the doctors for lice.pets are dieing and they suffer a horrible death. im lucky and both my cats are alive but so many are not. so many are also being put down because most people cant afford a $1300 vet bill. Sergeants,Hartz,Bio spot, are all sold at petco and they need to be removed and these companys need to replace the ingredients in these products and make a public apoligy. there are safe ingredients, why cant they use them? these stores like walmart and petco need to take some responcibility as well, we trust these stores and they let us down. if this was a child toy it would be removed and recalled right away. to me and alot of others or pets are our children.

  3. My husband used Bio Spot on his kitten two nights ago and she is fine, thankfully. She still has fleas and I have been told by a person who owns a pet product and grooming store that the fleas are really bad this year. I had good results when I bathed my kitten in Dawn dish detergent. She stayed flea free for about two weeks. But I didn’t fully treat the house, I believe that is why they came back. Sorry to all who have lost pets from these products. I will tell all my friends who have pets not to use those products.

  4. I had used the Flea & Tick squeeze bottles about a month maybe a bit longer ago didn’t have a problem, didn’t even realize this was a problem. I had used another treatment earlier today and me being the person that thinks about the “What if” decided to check into additional warnings and to see if i could get a good deal on the high price flea and tick stuff. i came across this site and immediately washed my dog as i came back up the stairs to my office i realized the dog shampoo i used was also Sargent’s by this time my dog was like OK i hate getting baths I’m not going anywhere near that horror room! so there i am in my underwear carrying my 70+ lb Siberian husky into the bath tub with a bag over the cast thats on my right arm ( makes scrubbing a dog really really hard )i used the only soap i had for hair which was my Ocean Breeze Suave shampoo. I hope nothing bad happens to my dog he’s a really great dog i got from the pound and everyone tells me i will never find a better behaved dog. right now he’s cleaning himself and eyeballing my work boots for a special treat in the morning. I’ll continue to monitor him over the next day or so.

I’ll help spread the word to others i know a few owners of groom shops I’m sure there is a forum somewhere for groom shop owners.

  5. IT’S SO SAD TO SEE THAT PEOPLE ARE STILL NOT AWARE OF THE TOXICITIES FOUND IN HARTZ, SEARGENT, BIO SPOT AND ANY PRODUCER OF A PRODUCT THAT USES PYRETHRINS (A TOXIC DERIVITIVE OF A PLANT)WHICH IS DANGEROUS AND DEADLY TO HOUSEHOLD PETS…THERES NO SET GUIDELINES TO APPLY THE PRODUCT BECAUSE EVERY ANIMAL IS DIFFERENT…I HEAR IT MORE AND MORE SINCE THE DEATH OF MY TWO HIMALYAN CATS ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO…THERE WAS NOTHING ON THE LABEL THAT GAVE ME AN ANTIDOTE SHOULD SOMETHING GO WRONG…IT WAS BATHING THE ANIMAL WITH DISHWASHER SOAP IMMEDIATELY…IF YOU SUSPECT YOU SPRAYED TOO MUCH ON THE ANIMAL(I FOUND IT ON THE INTERNET)…THE PROBLEM IS THAT NOTHING ALERTS YOU RIGHT AWAY AND IF YOURE NOT AWARE OF THESE DANGERS IT WILL GO UNDETECTED UNTIL ITS PRETTY MUCH TOO LATE OTHER THAT AN EXPENSIVE TRIP TO THE VET WHICH GIVES NO GUARANTEE IT WILL SURVIVE…THE BEST WAY TO TELL (“A WORD OF WARNING”IF YOU ARE USING THIS PRODUCT)THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG AFTER SPRAYING THE ANIMAL IS IF THE ANIMAL BECOMES LITHARGIC OR IN A DAZE AND WON’T EAT OR DRINK…ITS ONLY HOURS BEFORE IT GOES INTO A SIEZURE OR CONVULSES…
I ALSO NEED TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE THAT WHEN I SPOKE WITH A HARTZ REPRESENTATIVE OVER THE PHONE HE TOLD ME THAT THEY DON’T TEST THEIR PRODUCT ON ANIMALS…I RESPONDED WITH…”WELL THEN YOU TELL ME IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THE PRODUCT WILL DO TO AN ANIMAL…”WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO SELL SUCH A DANGEROUS PRODUCT?” HE SAID THERES NO PROOF THAT THE PRODUCT KILLED YOUR CATS…THOUGH THEY WAITED ALMOST 5 DAYS TO RESPOND AND PICK UP MY CATS FOR ANALYSIS..WHICH DEEMED THE TEST RESULTS USELESS BEING THAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE WITHIN A DAY OR TWO..AND I CERTAINLY WASN’T GOING TO STORE MY DEAD CATS IN MY FREEZER ANYWHERE NEAR MY FOOD AS THEY REQUESTED..”ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR TREE?”…THE HUMANE SOCIETY STATES THAT THEY HAVE A LEGAL RIGHT TO SELL THE PRODUCT THROUGH THEIR LICENSING…I RESPONDED WITH…”AND YOU CALL YOURSELVES THE HUMANE SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS? ” AND YOU ALLOW THIS TO GO ON JUST BECAUSE ITS LEGAL”…
IN HINDSIGHT IT IS FAR CHEAPER IN THE LONG RUN TO TAKE YOUR ANIMAL TO THE VET AND PAY THE FEE BECAUSE WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO HAVING TO SAVE THE ANIMAL AFTER ITS NEARLY TOO LATE YOU THEN YOU ARE FACED WITH HAVING TO PAY A HEFTY FEE TO SAVE IT’S LIFE IN THE END WITH NO GUARANTEE….
MIGHT I ALSO NOTE THAT PYRETHRINS ARE ALSO FOUND IN HOUSEHOLD SPRAYS SUCH AS BLACK FLAG WHICH CAN HARM YOUR PET IF IT INHALES ENOUGH VAPOURS,BODY SKIN ABSORPTION,OR LICKS ITSELF JUST SO YOU ARE AWARE…PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE DANGERS OF THESE DEADLY PRODUCTS…NOT JUST FLEA SPRAYS…PYRETHRINS ARE IN FLEA SHAMPOOS,FLEA COLLARS,BEHIND THE BACK OF THE HEAD TUBE FLEA APPLICATORS IN CASE YOU ARE UNAWARE…TO NAME A FEW THAT I KNOW OF…
I’M WAITING FOR THE DAY THAT THESE PRODUCTS ARE PULLED FROM THE SHELVES OF THE “KILL YOUR PET ISLE”…

  6. HOLY COW!!! I read this WAY TOO LATE!!!

My son arrived this morning in a panic with his puppy of almost 2 years. A smaller chocolate lab.

He put the Sargents flea stuff on her fur from Safeway and within an hour her eyes dilated, she was dripping from her mouth and shaking like a frozen dog! As soon as he told me he had just put the flea stuff on her I knew in a minute to shower her. Three baths later and a call to our vet, she is still not well. It will take a bit of time to get this POISON of her system all the way. She is still shaking a bit (NOTHING LIKE SHE WAS!!), a bit disoriented, walking weirdly, but not in a seizure to warrant an emergency vet visit. BUT if she gets any worse I will need to take her in. CRAP and FUCK YOU SARGENTS!!! SCREW YOU SAFEWAY!!!

  7. You are full of crap! Obviously there are some pretty lame cat lovers who did not follow the instructions as written on the bottle. I have used this for 7 years now (YES 7 YEARS!) and did not have a problem. This definitely a bogus claim by someone who is obviously deranged and not wanting anyone to take care of their animal.

As far as letting your son do this to your animal unsupervised, you should be ashamed and full of guilt.

  8. I just came home to find my cat dead and I bathe her a week ago and then put sergeants flea spray in her, Ivan beyond devastated I’ve had her for 13years

  9. I am so upset to read that cats are still being killed by this poison. When I was 10 years old in 1990, we treated two cats with Hartz flea spray. They were just over a year old, I think–one with short hair, and one with long hair. The short haired cat seemed fine, but the long haired cat kitty got very sick. We immediately stopped using the spray and took him to the vet, but the damage had been done. šŸ™ My dad stayed up all night feeding him with a syringe and trying to comfort him, but he didn’t make it through the night. We felt so terrible. We were told it was safe and followed the directions exactly, but we lost our little guy anyway. I just can’t believe it’s been 24 years and this poison is still allowed to be sold. It’s infuriating. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS POISON ON YOUR CATS. I’m sure there is a natural treatment for fleas or some other better way to handle it. I beg you–run fast and far from Hartz.
