I used Hartz Ultra Guard Flea and Tick Drops for Dogs….

Posted by Nos on August 6th 2008

I just used Hartz Ultra Guard Flea and Tick Drops on my dog 3 days ago and I haven’t noticed any problems with him, but I am afraid that he may develop something from the use of this product. I just happened upon this site because I typed in flea drops looking for information about Advantage Flea Drops. I had NO idea that Hartz was such an awful product until I read some of the stories. Now I’m afraid that something could happen to him because I put the drops on him. It has been three days and there have been no reactions, but I’m not sure how long it takes for reactions to show up? If anyone has any ideas how long it would take for a reaction to occur, please let me know. Thank you.

This will be the last time I ever use a product made by Hartz!

I think you would have probably noticed something by now, but I would give my dog a bath and get al that crap off of your pet. I talked to my Vet yesterday, and he said Hartz is the worse poison you can put on your animals…….

This morning my wife woke me up because she noticed our dog going delirious scratching and biting up a storm. The look on my poor dog face was horrible; he looked beaten by what ever was bothering him. We decided to take him to the vet, but wanted to take him a bath before I did. When I placed him in the tub for a quick rinse we noticed sworms of fleas bouncing about in his thin fur. We couldn’t believe it considering that we used to take him a bath once a week until people kept telling me it was bad to do so, so we quit. Luckily, I had some Hartz flea and tick shampoo from when we first got him as a pup. We took a him a gruelling hour and a half bath(three baths with lather and rinse) and after we felt we got rid of all of the fleas we dried him up and put on Hartz Ultra Guard drops. After that he slept for five hours in a deep sleep, figuring he had a rough few nights from those blood thirsty fleas. When he woke, he was back to normal. I still wanted to see if the product was valid or not and I happened to find this site…read your comment…sighed in relief…but still curious on how your dog is doing. Can you please email me and inform me on how your dog is doing? Today is Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008. This happened this morning at about 9:30. I would really appreciate, maybe some good news about the product.(fingers crossed) My email address is [email protected] Thank you for your time and understanding.
Sincerely–Romeo

I work at a vets office and frontline or revolution is a much better product however, I have seen many pets do fine on a hartz product… meaning no reaction but it doesnt seem very effective for fleas or ticks. frontline in typically under 15$ a dose and is not something that has to be prescribed. Revolution is a flea, tick, earmite and heartworm medicine that also does a little deworming. It is prescription so your pet has to see a vet and most likely get a heartworm test. Hope this helps… If you were going to see a reaction it would have been very shortly after the application of the product.. like within a few hours.

I gave the Hartz ultraguard pro product to both of my cats. They were very tired and sluggish for almost 2 days. One of my cats lost a patch of hair in the area where I applied the product and now a week and a half later has a huge scab over burned skin. Both of my cats still are crawling with fleas.

Please provide me with the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the product, “Hartz Ultra Guard Flea & Tick Spray”. Attach the document to your email reply or fax to 303-286-6159.

Thank You.

I used Hartz Ultraguard on my pug. She developed a huge blister, I have bathed the area and she active and eating well but still scratches the area. The area is getting larger and she is losing her fur. What can I do or put on her to relieve the itch and pain?

Cheryl, as quickly as possible bathe your dog thoroughly and use Dawn soap to clean her. Also, contact your veterinarian immediately and alert the Vet to the fact that you’ve applied Hartz Ultraguard and your pet is having a severe reaction. They have seen this problem way too many times and can help you if you do not wait too long. The problem could be severe–possibly lethal–if not treated quickly.

When your pet has stabilized please take the time to report this incident to the proper agencies and to Hartz. Hartz Mountain has one of the worst safety records in the industry. Their products containing the pesticide neurotoxin phenothrin have accounted for a significant number of the adverse incidents reported to the EPA over the years. Their appalling safety record goes back to the ’80’s and ’90’s with their product, Blockade, which was pulled from the market because of an unacceptable number of animal injuries and deaths. They have been forced by the EPA to make numerous labeling revisions and they have been cited and fined for not promptly and accurately reporting adverse incidents to the EPA. Unfortunately, these steps have not slowed injuries and deaths to pets. Their cat and kitten products were terminated in 2006 when the EPA issued a Cancellation Order against Hartz because of their deplorable safety record. Please–when you get the opportunity (and I know you are hurting right now)–take one important step to help yourself and other pets and pet owners. Please take the time to report your incident to the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC). This organization works with the EPA to compile the database of incidents and statistics that will be analyzed and used as a basis for corrective action. The NPIC can be reached at 1-800-858-7378. They are very professional, courteous and efficient. This is a critical step in the public forcing the EPA–one of the most lax oversight agencies in the federal government–to do the right thing and get these neuro-toxin pesticide ingredients out of the marketplace. Also, please call Hartz Mountain and report this incident to them. They WILL NOT be happy to hear from you, but they–-like all the manufacturers–-have an obligation under federal law to forward your report to the EPA. As I mentioned, Hartz Mountain has been cited and fined for not properly and promptly reporting these incidents in the past. Put the pressure on Hartz by giving them the details and forcing them to report to the EPA. Also, they should be asked to reimburse your medical expenses…don’t hesitate to ask for this. Do NOT bother reporting the incident to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center. They have a consulting services business relationship with the product manufacturers and their veterinarian staff will not agree that these products “used properly” will cause injury or worse. They will not report the incident to the product manufacturer and this relieves the manufacturers of any legal obligation to inform the EPA–in other words, it minimizes the problems reported to the government. The ASPCA has a serious conflict of interest through their financial relationship with the manufacturers of these pesticide neurotoxin products.

Finally, almost all veterinarians have seen first hand the devastation that these products are causing–they understand the pain and suffering. They truly care and can give you good medical advice. They are almost always willing to work with you if your financial situation is such that their service might be unaffordable. Thank you for posting your story; I’m so very sorry for what has happened. It’s reprehensible that Hartz, BioSpot, Sergeant’s, Vectra, Vectra 3D and others continue to injure and kill thousands of pets–it’s absolutely reprehensible. However, if you truly want to make a difference and contribute to the end of these horrific products please follow the reporting steps–-it will make a difference. All the best to you.

Wow, I never knew that the product caused soooo many problems. That’s aweful. I was about to use it on my 5 month old golden. Thank god I have been doing research. That’s horrible to hear about all the stories, and I’m sorry for all who have lost a friend.

As of Right Now, our 8 yr. Old Terrier has NOT EATEN IN 5 DAYS AFTER APPLYING THE HARTZ ULTRAGUARD PLUS. WE HAVE BATHED HIM WITH OATMEAL SHAMPOO AND ARE NOT SURE HOW TO PROCEED. HE FINALLY STARTED DRINKING WATER AGAIN 2 DAYS AGO. WE HAD THOUGHT THAT HE HAD POSSIBLY EATEN SOMETHING THAT WE WERE NOT AWARE OF, BUT THESE SYMPTOMS STARTED WITHIN A COUPLE OF HOURS AFTER APPLYING THE DROPS. WE REALLY JUST DONT HAVE THE MONEY TO TAKE HIM TO THE VET. ANY ADVICE ON HOW WE CAN HELP OUR BUBBY?

I have a 10 year old red haired MinPin that I have used Hartz Flea and Tick shampoo and flea and tick drops on for several years now, and I have had NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER with the products. I made sure that I followed the directions for both products to the tee and my dog has not had the slightest side affect to either product, so I don’t know what everyone else is doing wrong, because their products have worked just fine for me!!!!!

I have used Hartz Flea and Tick drops twice now on our Brittany and have not noticed any problems, but after finding this site…will for now on splurge a little bit more and go and buy Revolution. Was surprised to see this product at my local grocery store and thought I would try it. Didn´t realize this product was really that bad.

I gave my tea cup poodle this product 6hrs ago. He started trembling, walking like he is drunk, dosnt seem to know what he wants to do and is very lethargic. I thought it might be the Ultra guard drops so I called my vet. She told me to immediately bath him and watch him for seizures. My dog may die because I wanted to save money. My god I feel like a criminal. I will report this to every agency I can and I will be contacting Hartz when I know if and when my dog will be okay or not.

I’ve hused hartz ultra guard for almost 2 and 1/2 years and have had no problems with it. I don’t see any kind of bad reactions and my dog doesn’t scratch or bite like he has fleas. SO FAR, VERY HAPPY

My parents used Hartz tick drops on their dog last week and then for the next couple of days he acted sick and wouldn’t let anyone near him, he just laid in the corner, drooling. Now he seems fine but I came upon this website and am very scared that more damage is/will be done!

I gave my dogs the ultra guard pro last week. I noticed the few days after that they both were lethargic, one had mini siezuresoff and on for two days and they both had moments of hyperventilation. Thy both also have had fevers (they are hot to the touch) and diarrhea. I thought maybe they had caught a virus, but after finding this website, I feel that it was a reaction to the flea and tick meds. Definitely, going to keep an eye on them and a vet call, if not a visit, soon. Thank you all for your stories. Not using this product on my pets again!
