My dog lost almost all her fur with Hartz flea Shampoo/citrus scent

Sadly I did not know how severe the Hartz products are and that they can poison animals.  I have a 2 1/2 year old female hungarian mudi which is approx 45 lbs, beautiful black fur with massive curls around her ears and down her back with a really thick fluffy and long tail.  Then I came upon a puppy, welsh springer spaniel (4 mo’s old) who was found with no tags.  I took him in and of course he had fleas, so I got Hartz Flea shampoo / citrus scent and washed him.  Figuring My all black dog might have fleas too since they were in the same areas (couch, dog beds, etc.) I though I should give her a shampoo also (1st one ever) since I could in no way see them on her and she was acting like she might have some.  5 days later I starting noticing extreme amounts of fur all over beyond what typical shedding would be for her.  She was always a shedding dog, but this was seeming like too much.  When I went to brush her I realized she was loosing her fur and it was as if she was buzz cut. I immediately took her to the vet and he was quite concerned but it seemed too late to wash it off.  He put her on a really strong allergy pill and fish oil pills.  I want to know if anyone knows what I should be doing for my dog now to make her more comfortable and if this will lead to other problems?  Organ issues?  It saddens me to think I might have poisoned my dog with a bath.  I absolutely be contacting Hartz with this complaint and possibly take this further.  I sure hope she will recover from this without other issues.
Thanks, Jeanette Macleod

The FDA

I once worked for a leading official in the FDA’s Center for Veterinary medicine.  She said that pets are not their priority.  Food animals are.  That is why no action is taken against this horrid company.  We should be lobbying the Government and filling the media with these stories.  There is no one to advocate for Pets.

bad stuff for pooches Sergeants flea and tick treatment

I just want every one to be aware that Sergeants flea and tick treatment is absolutely the most aweful product put on the sheves for "dogs". I put this medication on my dog last night and he is currently in the hospital with seizures and a serious allergic reaction to this product. The vet said if I got him there just on time. Any of you animal lovers know that its like one of your children. I couldnt bare to see the pain my dog was suffering. Fortunatley he is doing better but he is still under medical care. I read a few other similar stories about this. How can a company produce such a harmful/leathal item over the counter in local super markets and get away with it? I know I know am going to have a heafty bill after this, but no amt of money matters when it comes to my dog. I just hope that this story reaches other people thinking of buying this before they do. Please do not harm your pet with this item. This is a serious issue this stuff is toxic and will harm your pet.

Balding

My cat, Mickey, started to get a bald spot on his back. The bald spot was also very red and looked painful. We didn’t know why so we took him to the vet. The vet warned us against ever using Hartz again. We immediately gave Mickey a bath, and, soon after, Mickey’s hair started to grow back. I will never use a Hartz product again for sure.

missing hair/scratching all the time

I am very upset by everything I am reading….How is it possible for a company to continue to sell products that are reported to cause so much death and or sickness. I have several pets and I have never used Hartz until a week ago when my children picked up a bottle of shampoo from the local walmart. I thought it was a just a fluke that my dog started to scratch more after I bathed her. I still had not put two and two together until tonight. I bought the whole line of products and I am seeing side effects in each pet. I want to know what I can do to help  get these products removed from the shelf..I know I will be taking the remainder of the shampoo’s I used back to the store along with all thhe crpet powders and sprays. I wish they would give me a problem in returning these items. I really fell a need to assist in anyway I can…please tell me how I can help

Pet shampoo burns cornea

My dog was shampooed w/ Hartz Aromethary Invigorating shampoo. When he was rinsed, we noticed he couldn’t stop blinking. The next morning, one eye remained affected. The vet said that his entire corneal area had been affected and was damaged. He was given four separate eye drops and pain meds. A follow-up visit revealed that he was healing well. The vet said if he gotten an infection it could strongly impact his vision. Two hundred dollars later, he is doing fine. The shampoo bottle had a cursory warning about avioding eye and ear contact. The warning should have been bold enough to catch the owners attention. Who would think a shampoo was cadustic w/o a clear, noticiable warning. Spread the wrod.

Boxer puppy hives

My 5 month old boxer woke up this morning covered in hives. I quickly did an online search to see if she could have some benedryl to calm the hives. I came across this site from a google search. Is it some strange co-incidence that yesterday I bathed her in Hartz flea and tick shampoo? I just don’t know! But after reading some of the stories, I am very suspicious that the shampoo is the culprit.

I have bathed her in clear water this morning, given her a teaspoon of benedryl, and she is sleeping in a sunny spot on the floor. I will certainly never use the shampoo again.

hartz 3 in 1 flea spray is DANGEROUS

My daughters cat had a flea problem, and I thought that instead of going to the vets and being told to get a flea srpay or drops, I would just get some at the local store. I picked up a srpay bottle of the 3 in 1 spray, and we put it on him according to the directions. Not even 2 hours later, I noticed him acting- not himself- he was not active, was acting groggy, disoriented, he kept twitching and shaking his back leg as if he was wet, and losing his balance each time. He even jumped up and sat with me, and just leaned against me as if to say, " I don’t feel good, help me please". We bathed him immediately, removing, I think, most of the spray ( we will be bathing him again today, to make sure !), and now, this morning, he is much better, walking around, and purring when petted, but still not himself . I hope this story will help at least one person, I wish there was a way to let even more folks know how dangerous these items are that are sold by a company that is suposedly making products for the health and well-being of our beloved family members !!!

Hartz Flea Spray

I sprayed my stairway, my couch, two chairs, and my bed with Hartz Flea Spray. Then I went to work. 10 hours later I came home and didn’t think anything about the smell. I assumed after 10 hours, it was safe to sit on the couch and lie on the bed. It has been 23 days since then, and the smell is driving me crazy.
I vacuumed, put baking powder down, washed and re-washed bedding, couch cover. I threw rugs and clothing away. I tried Fabreeze. I go to the sauna almost daily thinking I have to sweat it out of my body. I started drinking liquid chloraphyl because the local nutrition shop said it might be an internal issue. I used the sinus cleansing kit from Wal Mart thinking maybe it was in my sinuses. By the way, no one else can smell it.
I called the nurse hotline. They said a smell that is not going away is not a health issue but put me through to the Poison Hotline. They said that as long as there were no respiratory or neurological symptoms, I had to wait until it went away.
Not a good way to spend a month. I smell this sicky sweet chemical spray everywhere, even when I leave home and go to work. NEVER AGAIN!
(oh, at least there were no fleas that lived, they were lucky.)
