SentryPro issues-Any Flea Product can kill

Posted by Anonymous on March 29th 2008

I have an 8 month old Chihuahua named Delilah. I noticed she was itching her knee area on her back leg and thought maybe she had recieved a flea from the backyard and since the weather has been getting warmer, it is the season to re-treat for fleas. I gave her SentryPro which is Sergent’s brand and not Hartz. The reason I want to post this here is because it is not just Hartz or Sergent’s brands that are lethal to some animals. After doing investigations on my own, it is all very bad and it can affect everyone, including your children. Within hours after giving my dog this treatment, her back leg began to jerk. It reminds me of a jack rabbit or a horse bucking someone off of them. The uncontrolled movements made me first think it was the flea bite irritating her or that the flea bit her again before dying. Unfortunately, I didn’t think much else of it until the symptoms got worse. My dog was laying with me, starting to jerk, and then the breathing issues came up. She started to have reverse sneezes. They were constant and I couldn’t stop them. I tried all the remedies on the internet that I could find at 3am and none of them worked. It took me about 30 minutes to figure out that this is not just reverse sneezing and fleas, it is an allergic reaction. I rushed my dog into the bathroom and began to scrub her down. Placing her in a towel, I held her close feeling the jerks and slight convulsions she had. Shaking of her head, kicking her feet, and the overwhelming need to gnaw on her feet and the soles of them. I rolled over on my bed to try and get us both more confortable and noticed that the bed was wet. Thinking at first she may have had an accident, I realized that it was on my pillow too where her face was laying prior to the bath. She was drooling!  I could now see spit collected in her mouth that was dripping from both sides.  I tried to give her water. The reverse sneezing stopped shortly after the bath but jerks and gnawing continued through the night. I was afraid to fall asleep wondering what I had done to her or if I caught it in time. I was angry because the back of the package only says that if SENSITIVITY OCCURS, WASH WITH MILD SOAP AND RINSE WITH LOTS OF WATER. Sensitivity? Isn’t sensitivity more like mild diarrhea? Maybe indigestion? Or a headache? I called the Consumer Affairs with the company today and they told me that they had a a caller just before mine that read things I had read on the internet and tried to discredit them by saying it was opinion. My problem was the box does not say, some side affects may include, seizures, vomiting, reverse sneezing (snorting), jerking, gnawing on limbs, and kidney failure..if this happens contact vet immediately. Product can be washed with DEGREASING Liquid Soap. If I had known these were the side affects, it would not have taken me so long to wash it off my dog. Instead they use sensitivity? I feel mis-informed. Betrayed. I bought this product at Petco. Where all the pets go. I thought that they would at least make sure they checked into the products that they sold before I bought them. I found forum after forum only to find that ALL dog over the counter products like this can be lethal. Hotspot, Hartz, SentryPro (sergent’s). The way these products work is two issues. One is, it is absorbed by the skin which then circulates it through the blood stream. It kills fleas by attacking the nervous system of the bugs. The pesticide cannot distinct between Dogs, bugs, kids, and adult’s nervous systems. Some are more SENSITIVE than others on absorbing this poison. Before you allow your child to wash the dog or do it yourself, consider these items and do your research. Dont take my word for it. What do I know? I found that some of these chemicals used may be linked to parkinsons disease. I found that the EPA doesn’t take into consideration how much dogs sleep with family members or share common items such as sleeping on bedding and cuddling. It is awful what happened to my baby, but I think she will recover. I do not think any of these products should be sold because even a child handles a dog with a flea collar and gives them a bath. It doesn’t have enough warnings NOR an information packet to tell us what to expect or do if something bad does happen. It should be our choice to purchase a product with knowledge of what we can expect. It is just like purchasing tylenol or a sleeping pills. Tell me what to look for so I know when to get scared at least! We always wonder what causes the increased defects and cancer rates other than a higher population and environment. Why dont we start considering poisons like this. They find medication and poisons in our water systems and it makes the news. Why hasn’t this? Just bothers me. I posted something on my myspace (yes I am retarded like that) and emailed people. But apparently some do not look into this kind of thing until it happens to them. I was one of them. Good luck to everyone. The EPA’s # is 800-858-7378 to report a poison issue that happened. I suggest EVERYONE take the time to file their report and issues. Thanks for letting me vent. Written from good ol’ Livermore, Ca.  PS. I see that Frontline is the only one that is less likely to cause these problems. Even K9 advantix has similar pesticides that Hartz uses. I hear that Keri Lotion is also good at preventing flea bites and can be used on the humans to prevent bites while you find other ways of getting rid of your flea problems.

I also gave my dog Sentry Pro and noticed 3 hours later that he was jerking his back leg like it hurt him. I checked his foot and it didn’t seem to bother him if I touched it…which would indicate that it wasn’t hurting him. I washed the Sentry Pro off and he seems to be okay.

This stuff is POISION…SENTRYPRO XFC almost killed my dogs and it has sickend hundreds, if not thousands.

Google SENTRYPRO XFC and read the posts in the first result. This company refuses to take responsibility and pull the product. one of my dogs has not recovered very well and still has problems.

Thank you soooo much for sharing your sad story. I just purchased a 2 month old lhasa apso weighing 2 lbs. I have SentryPro & just tossed it in the trash.

I just used this product on my dog about half an hour ago and I noticed that she started barking and acting erratic. I figured that it was working and the fleas were dying. No such luck, her skin is turning red. It scared me so I did a search of hartz ultra pro and came across this post. I don’t like to see my dog in any kind of pain and I’m pissed. I took a warm wash cloth and gently wiped her down because I don’t want to irritate her skin more than it already is. It looks as though I have to throw this stuff away and use Frontline. My baby shouldn’t be in pain for something that should be helping her.

I would also like to post that we used a Sentry product on my lhasa apso about a month ago. Soon after she started to go nuts and her little heart was just racing…..it took 3-4 baths with a special soap we have to calm her down. It was a recent newspaper article that brought to my attention this issue and I am astounded by how many complaints I see scattered across the internet.

I am so thankful my dog is okay but I am so angry that this company allows this to happen.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! IT ALMOST KILLED MY BICHON.
I got my dogs back from a week of boarding at the vet’s yesterday and they had ticks. From the vets!
I have always used Bio Spot without fail, because everything else bothered my Bichon’s sensitive skin. But the vet claimed Bio Spot doesn’t work, (it’s never their fault, right?) She gave me two Preventic collars for dogs over 60 pounds which I did not notice until I got home and the office had closed, and since both of my dogs combined weigh 26 pounds, I went to Petsmart & bought SentryPro XFC for dogs 9 – 20 pounds to use on my Bichon and toy Poodle instead. Knowing my Bichon (14 lbs) has sensitive skin, I used less than 1/3 of one tube (9 – 20 lbs) dabbing two spots, one on his neck and one above his tail, then I did the same for my 11 pound poodle, discarded the rest of that tube and put the remaining two tubes in my medicine cabinet.
Both dogs almost immediately began to whine, rub themselves, and run around as if they were on fire! After searching the internet, I tried all the listed suggestions: Benedryl, tuna water, baths, cold compresses, etc., but nothing helped. I called the company and they said to try a de-greasing dish soap, like Dawn. Well it is 3:15 am, more than 9 hours, 2 cans of tuna water, 3 baths, and a dose of Benedryl later and my dogs are still climbing the walls. The Bichon runs in circles and cries and the poodle (who has never had any allergic reactions in the 10 yrs I’ve had her) keeps pawing at me and trying to bite her rear end. I am really pissed at the vet for not keeping their kennels right in the first place. I still can’t believe they picked up ticks from the vet. Between checking them every few hours for ticks last night, and the discomfort from the “treatment” tonight, I have to function at work tomorrow on less than 4 hours of sleep total in two nights.
My babies are in agony and I will NEVER use this product again, nor will I ever board my pets with this particular veterinary office!

Please help us get this product pulled! Our poor pug has been showing many of these same side effects from Sentrypro XFC for several days despite giving him a bath about 30 hours after his initial drops. We have never seen him act like this and are bringing him to the vet this evening. I am appalled that the box packaging does not say anything about these side effects! Does anyone know a number to report this incident to?
Does anyone have an actual recipe to help my poor little guy out? Please help!

Almost Killed My Dog!

I gave my cocker spaniel the Sentrypro XFC Flea and Tick this morning as 7am. My daughter called me when she woke up at 11:30 informing me our dog was foaming at the mouth and shaking her head crazy. Although she couldnt have ingested any, my daughter gave her milk, which seemed to help the crazy head shaking (seizures).I rushed home and took her to the Vet. The first thing they did was bathe her neck with Dawn dish soap removing the Sentrypro. They gave her a shot of electrolytes an anti naseau, a med to help with the muscle spasms and something else I cant remember. We are home now and monitoring her. She will be ok. This should not be sold at Pets Stores and I will make damn sure they know! The maker and the store are at least liable for my Vet bill and lost wages. I am so grateful Jypsy lived and I didnt crash driving home and to the Vet.

I used this product on both my daschund and chihuahua. No symptoms of anything as of yet, but I have to say this stuff still sucks, doesn’t even work!! Now I will have to wait another month with fleas before I can treat them again. It just pizzes me off I have to spend 62.00$ on Advantix to get a product that both works and is less likely to murder my pets..
