My husband and I have 2 cats and a small dog. One of our cats is an out door cat and came home and spread the love to our other 2 animals with fleas. On our Sunday grocery shop we bought the Hartz flea treatment that you put between their shoulder baldes, thinking nothing of it because surely its fine if its in our grocery store. I put it on our small cat Molly to start. She immediately took 2 licks and did before I could get to her. I looked on the box and it said "Harmful if swallowed" I totally started to freak out. My husband called the emergency vet and told us to bring her in ASAP. We waited an hour just to see if she was ok and the first sign of something wrong we would take her. After talking to the vet and watching Molly like a hawk I started searching the web and was horrified as to all the stories I was reading. We gave Molly a bath right away and I made her a sweater out of a sock. We were very lucky that she was ok (we call her Molly the Miracle Cat)….and threw out the rest of the Hartz product right away. How can stores and supermarkets, that I trust for my pets, carry these products. I am sickened and furious that this is still going on. What can we do to stop this? Something needs to be done so this doesnt happen to more innocent animals!
I ALMOST LOST MY CAT BECAUSE I USED HARTZ FLEA AND TICK DROPS ON HER. DON’T EVER USE THEM, OR BETTER YET, DON’T BUY ANY HARTZ PRODUCTS. I WILL NO LONGER USE ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS. MY CAT WENT THROUGH HELL FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND NEARLY DIED ON ME. NOT TO MENTION THE COUPLE OF THOUSAND DOLLARS THAT IT COST ME TO MAKE HER WELL AGAIN. IT WAS TOUCH AND GO AND THE VET DIDN’T THINK SHE WAS GOING TO PULL THROUGH AT FIRST. THANK GOD SHE DID AND SHE’S DOING WELL NOW. BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS IF THERE IS A WEB SITE WHERE SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS TYPE OF THING, THE COMPANY MUST KNOW ABOUT IT YET THEY STILL SELL THE PRODUCT. THE COMPANY SHOULD BE BOYCOTTED UNTIL THEY STOP SELLING THE DEADLY DROPS.
At around 1:00 today (Tuesday) I put 3 teaspoons of Rid Worm Liquid in my dogs food. She loved it! After she ate all of her food she seemed fine. Twenty minutes or so had passed and she was running around like crazy. She kept jumping at the door so I would take her out; four different times in 15 minutes. I started cleaning the house and didn’t want to step on her so I put her on the balcony. I noticed her foaming from the mouth immediately after I put her out there. She could not stay still. The foaming got worse so I gave her some food and water, thinking this would soak up the Rid Worm, but it didn’t. She started vomiting over and over. It is now after 5:00 PM and all the vet offices are closed. We bathed her and have given her plenty of water all evening. She is so weak and can hardly move now. Please, if you have any tips to help her, let me know.
I too was a victim to using a Hartz product. I usually used frontline but was in Wal-mart and thougt I would just pick something up here for this time. Almost immediately my dog Lexie was not acting quite right. She was jumpy and acting like something was biting her. I ignored this and went away for a few hours to come home to her foaming at her mouth. I was very upset and immediately put her in the bath. She didn’t want to eat either. Went to bed but she could not settle down. Got up with her at 2:oo in the morning to search for this product only to find all of these horrible stories. I was so upset! I called the emergency vet and they said to watch for seizures and vomitting. I read some more stories and took their advise and bathed her again in a antibacterial dish soap and also baking soda. She seems to be a little better right now. I will be staying up with her tonight to watch her. Something has to be done about this. I could hardly stand to read some of these stragec stories. I would like to be part of getting these out of the market once and for all!!!!

My dog Jasper is a health dog, I bought the Sargents Gold for fleas and put it on him today and he had aleric reaction. I called the hotline and they were helpful. I hope he gets better by tommorrow.
This story is very hard for me to tell, as it has happened through the course of yesterday (Thanksgiving) and today.
I had a dog named Scooter. He was a 1 year old black lab. One of the happiest dogs I had ever seen. He got fleas about 4 months ago, so we bought a Hartz flea collar for him. Well we ended up taking off the collar 5 days after we put it on him. I have no idea how he got a hold of it, but he ate it. Yesterday (Thanksgivng 2007) he was throwing up, drooling slimey stuff (believed to be stomach vile), bloodshot eyes, and was pooping nothing but blood. We moved him into the garage and went to sleep. The next day(today) my mom was at work and I was at home. I checked on him, there was more blood on his blanket, urine on the floor, and he was laying on the ground. My mom came home so we could take him to the vet. He was very weak and limp. We tried to get him to stand up, but he just fell back to the floor. We put him on a blanket and carried him into the car. On the way to the vet he had more blood, and didn’t move. We carried him into the vet’s office and onto the table. The vet checked his temperature, and it was 106. He started to put an I.V. into him, but his stomach stopped moving. The vet checked to see if he was breathing. At the same time slime started dripping out of his nose violently. He had died right there in front of me. It was a very depressing ride home.
I am so happy I have found this website. That flea collar killed my dog, and this shouldn’t have to happen to any other animal. Hartz should be taken off the shelves.
My mother and I sit on the phone talking about our cats all day, almost everyday. When I received the phone call from my mother this morning, I was couldn’t believe my ears; Trouble, her cat, was dead. He was fine the last time we spoke. My mother asked me what did I use for prevention and I told her Hartz. Iv’e been using Hartz 3-in-1 flea and tick drops on Sox, my cat, for about six months with no problem, that I know of. She said she used it last month and didn’t notice any symptoms but when she used it Monday evening, by Tuesday he started vomitting and later that night she found him dead. I’m so lost for words after finding more Hartz victims. Now I have t call her and tell her it was my fault. He was all she had after I left home. I’m never using this product again and I will be sure to spread the word.
We got our cat from a box in front of a grocery store in Carefree, Az. My daughter was 2 at the time. Cassidy was only 3 weeks. She was a great cat! Sweet, intelligent, she would play games with us like climbing on the roof and then following us around while we were outside until we "saved" her. She ruled our house and kept our two dogs in their place!
I am writing because Cassidy died yesterday. She was almost 13 years old, a beautiful abysinnian. We recently got a puppy from our son, and he came with fleas. We treated him, and then eventually had to treat the other animals. I had an old package of flea medicine in my cupboard, and used it because it was late, and I wanted to "get rid of those fleas now!" That medication was of course from Hartz. I noticed her licking her self, but didn’t think too much of it because she was so large, that she really couldn’t reach the area where the medicine was at. After about a week, we bathed her, and then applied advantage. However shortly there after she quit eating, and slowly lost weight. It took a while to realize exactly what I had done. We took her to the vet, and after tests found out that she had indeed been poisoned. They treated her for her liver infection, and we spent the next two weeks trying to feed her with a syringe, just trying to keep her going long enough, hoping that she would pull through. She died in my arms, gasping for breath.
Please do not use this product, and if you have get immediate attention!! Do not hesitate!! I don’t know what the solution is, there may not be one, but don’t wait. If I had noticed sooner, maybe she would still be alive today.
Hartz is not the only product that uses this poison, it is called Phenothrin, and it is in over 1500 products that people use all the time. Not suprising is that it is in ant and roach killer as well as rat poison. Imagine using something that you would kill a rat on your pets. Any company who would sell something like this should be ashamed. I will tell everyone I know about this.
