I bought Hartz flea drops a few years ago (in 2002). When I used a dose on my cat Minette, my cat had a really bad reaction. My cat went crazy and defecated and urinated several times on the floor, while running in multiple directions. My cat managed to lick the product, and went even more sick and stressed.
Finally, my cat got better after a few hours and I promised to myself to not use this product again.
Now, let’s go to September 2007. I have a severe flea infestation right now and I am kinda desesperate. So I find my old box of Hartz flea drops, with two doses left.
I say to myself : "Maybe last time I did something wrong so I’ll try again". So today I used a dose on Minette. Immediatly, she had an adverse reaction. She ran away and hid from me. Minette then ran around the appartment a little, obviously scared and tried to remove the product by licking and scratching.
I say to myself : "Something is wrong!", then I made some research and just found out about the whole controversy about this dangerous product!
I used the drops 2 hours ago, but my cat is still stressed. Minette runs in random directions and is panicked a little. Minette went to her litter box 2 times in like 30 minutes and is still having adverse reactions right now.
I have no problem at all to believe that many cats were sick or died because of this product. It seems very dangerous! Have they ever tested it at all before selling it? This is ridiculous!
I HAVE A FULL BLOODED MINI DAPPLE DAUTSON. AND I BOUGHT THE HARTZ GOLD AND PUT ON HER THE WAY IT SAID TO APPLY IT. ABOUT 2 HOURS LATER SHE WAS SHAKING, AND HER EYES WAS ROLLING IN THE BACK OF HER HEAD. I RUSED HER TO THE VET AND BY THAT TIME SHE WAS FOAMING OUT OF THE MOUTH.. THEY KEPT HER OVER NIGHT AND SHE TURNED OUT TO BE OK.. I CALLED HARTZ THE NEXT DAY AND TALKED TO ABOUT 10 PEOPLE AND GOT HUNG UP ON BY ALOT MORE THAN THAT… I FOUGHT THEM FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND THEY FINALLY AGREED TO PAY FOR THE VET BILL, REFUND THE MONEY FOR THE POISON, AND FOR POSTAGE AND OTHER DAMAGES. THEN I WENT TO WALMART AND HANDED A STACK OF PAPERS I PRINTED FROM A BUNCH OF SITES ABOUT THEIR POISON THAT THEY ARE SELLING AND THAT IT NEEDED TO BE TAKEN OFF OF THE SHELVES. BUT OF COURSE THEY ARE STILL SELLING IT….
Whatever you do, do not use Sergeants brand pet shampoo, flea medication or anything else made by them on your pets. Dogs or cats. We found this out the hard way. We usually use the stuff from the vets office but were out and I just ran up to the store to grab something. Never again!!! I put the Sergeants flea medication on both our dogs last night. Our older dog Maggie was fine but it really affected our younger one Izzie. To the point that we had to take her to the emergency vet clinic last night. She was drooling uncontrolably, vomiting and had tremors. This happened within an hour of application. The vet advised us to wash her will Dawn dish soap and watch her for seizures. Well I wasn’t going to sit there and wait for her to have a seizure. So we took both of them down to the clinic. Maggie was fine but Izzie had to stay the night. She had an IV and was given fluids, muscle relaxers, anti-nausea meds, and something to stop the drooling. She is fine now but it cost a pretty penny to take her to the emergency clinic. Don’t get me wrong I would have paid any price to have her well. The kicker is the vet and the staff all said they have seen multiple cases like this from people using the Sergeants brand products. They’ve actually had cats that have had seizures and died. I can’t believe this product is still on the shelf and being sold in stores everywhere. Tell everyone you know not to use these products on their pets.
KILLED MY 8 WEEK OLD PUPPY. DID NOT HAVE A CLUE THAT IS WHAT KILL HIM. NOW I KNOW MY 5 MONTH OLD PUPPY IS SICK VOMITING, SHAKING AND WANT DO ANYTHING. I SPEND $300 ON VET BILL FOR MY 8 WEEK OLD PUPPY FOR LOW SUGAR. THAT WAS NOT IT. IT’S THAT SPRAY I GOT FROM WAL-MART THAT IS KILLING MY PUPPIES.
I noticed my cat had tapeworm so i called the vet and made an appointment. I told the vet i was going to get some flea control. The vet secretary said that’s a good idea.
I went to walmart.
I had three options,
—or have the vet get me a prescriptions one.
I asked someone who was working at walmart which one she would go with, she said hartz because advantage is newer.
Well, i applied it, and the cats start frothing, so i wiped some of it off, and i think there fine now, but i need tot get the rest of it off, so i’m going to bath theme.
I should have did my research, I thought i could trust a product that being sold at ever department store. I’m such a gullible stupid consumer.
Well my cats seem fine after three days, but i’m worried i did some kind of damage that isn’t occuring right now.
I called the vet back and told her i put hartz on my cat, she told me that wasn’t a good idea. I asked her why she didn’t warn me while we were discussing this before. I figured when i said that i waas going to put drops on my cat she would say something. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. How did i miss all the bad reviews, and websites.
I think i’m going to go to walmart, and put labels on all the hartz pruduct that say POSION: consult vets, and check the web about this product.
We bought a kitten for my 4 year-old daughter, who named her Ruby, after one of her favorite cartoons. After a few days, my daughter mentioned that she saw a bug on Ruby- when I checked she was COVERED in fleas. (my other 2 cats had them as well). In a panic, I asked my mother to pick up some flea remedy, since the vet was closed in the evening. I carefully read the directions, but it did not say to not use the 3 in 1 spray in cats younger than 12 weeks, so I liberally applied it. The next morning, Ruby was twitching and wasn’t able to walk straight. we rushed her to the vet, who kept her overnight, and recommended to put her to sleep the next morning. we elected to see if she’d recover over the weekend, and today we hear she’s eating and drinking, but the vet has to figure out what meds she might still need. I’m not sure if she’s "out of the woods" yet.
here’s the thing- I have a doctorate in PHARMACY and knew enough to look for an age warning on the bottle. I later went back and found the warning "hidden" in the "overdose and toxicity section" but it NEEDS TO CLEARLY SAY ON THE LABEL." I feel so horrible- trying to make the little cat better and almost killed her in the process. I was under the impression that NO treatment would be worse since fleas can cause anemia in young cats. Shame on Hartz! my vet has since said that it’s called "Hartz dog and cat killer" in her office.
please don’t use chemicals on animals to get rid of fleas.
There is a safe and human way to get rid of them and I will
tell you how to do it and your loved pet will love u 4 it also.
Take half a cup of vineigar and half a cup of water
mix them together.
wet your pet down as coat needs to be completely wet
Then rub from the tip of head to the tip of tail
then let sit for about 3 min then rinse completely off
then give your kitty a bath in sunlight soap and make
sure you rinse off all the fur completely.
If u have a large dog then use half and half on coat
always make sure the mixture is half and half
follow directions as above.
This will get rid of fleas and ticks and it is completely
SAFE and will not harm your kitty or puppy or cat or dog
Dont use a product that will harm you or your animal
especially if u know it has a chemical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and I know this works with no side affects
as I have used it for over 20 years and every
pet I have ever had has always loved me for
not using a chemical that will kill them.
Hi, My name is Joyce and I normally use the Frontline on all my cats
I breed and sell Bengal Cats.
The story about Charlie and Natasha is very true
I ran out of the Frontline Flea Treatment and I only had two cats left to d and it was well past time for the vets to be closed so, I went to our local Wal Mart and I got some of the Hartz Plus Flea Treatment because I thought that they was a good company to buy from because they have been around for sveral years, and I put it on Charlie and Natasha.
I got up about 1 am and found Charlie having severe seisures, I washed him off as best I could and rushed him to the emergency vet hospital in Boone, NC where he was given immediate attention.
Charlie was in a coma state by the time I got him there.
I was told to come back home and come back in the moring at about 7 am.
When I returned back home I found Natasha having the same kind of seisures so, I rushed her to the same place for treatment.
The next morning when it was time to take them to the day vet when Charlie was unhooked from his IV he stopped breathing and his heart stopped.
Well I lost it then,I started crying so hard because I just knew that my baby was dieing.
The vet that was taking care of them during the night did CPR on him and was able to bring him back.
These two cats suffered very much because I put the Hartz Plus Flea Treatment on them.
If I had known that it was that dangerous I never would have used it on my babies.
These cats were in a coma for three days, and I was hurting so bad inside because I thought I was going to loose my babies
I couldn’t eat or sleep or anything because I was just worring about these two babies.
When they finally got to come back home, they were not the same.
Charlie has problems with his back legs and Natasha’s left eye doesn’t focus.
The products that Hartz Mountain Corporation does make, is POISON
I tried contacting the Hartz Corporation but they say that they are not going to pay for any of this.
Someting has to be done about this and we have to do i
I spent out over $1600.00 on these two babies and I would do it again if I had to.
These babies mean the world to me, they are worth all the money in the world to me.
Yesterday I bought Hartz cream cat dewormer for my kitten thinking I was buying a good brand. How wrong was I. I mixed it in with her food as directed, she only took three bites of food and was dead within 18 hours. Her body became lifeless…she could not support any weight on her legs…she lay down and died. My friend had a kitten from the same litter…she gave the same cream dewormer to her cat this afternoon…within a couple of hours the cat looked drunk…my daughter was there and told her what had happened to our cat the day before…they rushed her to the emergency vets hospital. She has been told that she has to stay there for 2 days at a cost of $1,000 and there is only a 50/50 chance of survival. The vet said it was poison and that it was imported and had not been used here for 20 years. I only just found this web site…I sprayed my other dog and cat with flea spray and bathed them in Hartz 2 in 1 shampoo yesterday…having read all the other comments I am so worried about them now…and will be watching them closely. I do not understand how these products can be sold when they are obviously killing our pets. I will never use them again and advise anyone to spend the extra money and see a vet.
I had a similar experience using a Hartz flea product. I had used the drops that you apply at the neck, and within a couple of days my cats had shown signs of distress, hairloss, and loss of appetite. I blame myself for trusting to use a product that is found on the shelves at a local pet store that is intended to aid in treating a loved pet. My main concern is that this product has not been pulled from these stores. With all the negative feedback that resulted from the use of this product, you would think someone would take action and recall the poison.
I can only imagine how many cats have been injured and no one has taken the time to respond! After reading the posting on Craigslist and finding your site, I realize that my experience is not an isolated one.
