Cerebral Swelling

Sunday 7-29 at 8am I put a flea treatment on my 5 yr old shih tzu Boo. By noon she was acting paranoid and clawing at the carpet, trying to bury her head in my lap or any pillow she could find. I thought it was anxiety from the storms but then she started twitching her hind legs. i went to the emergency vet and they did blood work and said it was anxiety, i knew it wasn’t because she couldn’t lay still w-out twitching. it was horrible she kept throwing her little body against me like "help me." she was so exuasted and just couldn’t make her body relax. when my vet opened at 7am i ran her up there. she finally got some sort of relief (not able to sit still for over 24 hrs!!)at 6 pm after they gave her a shot of steriods and puppy valium. she’s on a 2 week steriod plan and we are in hopes there’s no permanent damage.

Percy

I have had Percy for thirteen years. I bought the drops for her she is an inside cat but got fleas anyway. After applying the drops she hide ( she has always been shy petted when she wants) the next day she was sick but we had some different food thought that was bothering her. Then we noticed her limping her right paw sore then she started peeing on things and sleeping in her litter box. After talking with our vet we are convinced it has given her demetia as well as disabling her right leg permenantly. some days are better than others but she is currently living in the basement because of the litter box sleeping I will probably have to put her down soon which just sucks because she was in such good health until I used the drops don’t even think of buying the Hartz brand I thank god I figured it out before I used it on the dog too. what a nightmare.

Healthy 17-y-o Cat — Now Dependent on Steriods to Breathe!

I’ve had B.P. and two of her sisters, Winkin’ and Blinkin", since they were born over 17 years ago. They were always extremely healthy and active cats. Two still are — but a little over a year ago I used Hartz 4-in-1 on B.P., and now she’s fading fast!

Going through a tough financial period, I couldn’t afford vet flea medicine, so I bought Hartz 4 in 1 instead when I noticed B.P. scratching a bit. How I wish I had known about its toxicity!

A few hours later, a friend noticed that BP seemed very lethargic, and brought it to my attention. To check, I got out the vacuum cleaner and started it up right next to her (which always used to cause her to fly to a hiding place), but there was no reaction at all. She was like a statue. When I picked her up and tried to set her on her feet, she just collapsed into a clump. She seemed stunned or dazed. I was beside myself.

I made an emergency phone call to the vet and took her there immediately. The vet knew that Hartz was dangerous and called the CDC for animals to find out the best remedy. They gave B.P. intravenous fluids for several hours, washed her thoroughly, etc. She seemed much better the next day.

That’s not the end of the story, though. Ever since that incident, B.P. has had severe "asthma" — she has been on prednisone continuously since then because it’s the only way she can breathe adequately. Lately (a year later) she is definitely in decline. She and her sisters all used to be the same size — B.P. is now 4 lbs. lighter than them (they’re all 1/2 Maine Coon). She has to be continually coaxed to eat. Even with drugs, her breathing is still labored. Most disturbing, I (her "Mom") can tell she’s not happy — and may be in pain. The vet is still trying to find what other things are not right with her.

This is all because of Hartz and their toxic products! How can the government allow them to remain in business knowing more animals will suffer?! I want to join in any on-going lawsuits against Hartz. Please let me know about them (I couldn’t find many specifics on this website).

My heart goes out to all of you who are suffering with a pet (or have lost a pet) because of Hartz’ practices. They are evil! We must seek justice for our pets.

LOLA

I can’t say that I am a victim but I do appreciate this website. I bought Hartz today and was just about to apply it when I decided to check them out on the internet. Although I was a little offended by Josh’s comment, (On the ‘Almighty dollar’) I somewhat understand. To clarify – It’s not that I am being selfish, it’s that the money I spend at the vets on Frontline can go towards gas or food for the week. I love my dog, she is my world…as most of your pets are to you. I would never want to harm her and for that reason I’ll bring the package back, never touching my dog. So, my sincere thanks goes out to all of you that have posted your stories. 🙂

Dilbert

Hi…This is a story about my best friend Dilbert.

Dilbert had an application of Hartz flea shampoo. Approximately 1-2 hours later, I found the poor little guy just laying there. When I treid to make him stand, he just plopped over like a rag doll. He was looking at me but did not have the strength to meow. I immediately washed him with my shampoo then drove him straight to the vet. The dr. rushed Dilbert into the room. They said it did not look good for Dilbert. They gave him a shot of steroids and other medicine to try and counteract the poison. Then all we could do is wait and see.
The Dr. took me aside and clued me in on Hartz flea shampoo…he told me that it is deadly and approximately one in 4 cats will have a severe reaction to the product.

Dilbert was lucky at that time…three days later he got to come home to me. He was never the same though. He seemed to have a weakened immune system from thereon out. He died a short time later in the vet from a common cat cold that he just could not overcome.

He will be forever missed.

I love you Dillybean.

Sylvester……….

Many years later….I had the same problem with two of my cats ( I was mistaken that the Hartz flea drops were just like the Frontline drops and that it would be safe)….I put hartz flea medicine on my three indoor cats. One of the cats did ok…the other one was acting like it felt ill… and the third cat, Sylvester had the same reaction as poor Dilbert. We took him into the vet and Sylvester had the same treatment as Dilbert did. He also recovered…But also continued to be weakened and soon after died mysteriously. We called him funny face because of his unique markings on his face. He was sweet, loyal, and trusted that people would never hurt him. We miss you Funny Face.

Each case Dilbert and Sylvester….Hartz took full responsibility for all vet fees. They send letters stating that they were not at fault but agreed to pay the vet bills.

Very sick cat

We treated our two cats, ages 1 and 4, with the flea control drops. Both cats were shivering and tremoring within 12 hours. I had no idea what may have caused it and then I found out from our vet that Hartz Flea control products are basically PESTICIDES! He said that what was contained in the products was the same stuff you put on your yard to kill grubs, etc. After bathing the cats to get the poison off of them and some IV fluids, they came out of it. Thank goodness! Our vet said that the longer the product stays on the skin, the worse it becomes. We have used Frontline products for years and tried a "quick" remedy this time. It turned out to be a costly lesson. NEVER AGAIN!!!

It Kills the Flea’s and your pet

Three days ago I used Hartz Flea and Tick spray on my 2 year old Basset Hound, the next morning she was not herself heavy drulling at the mouth and she did not have enough strength to walk.We carried her to our Vet where she stayed in I.C.U. for two days. We have her back home now but she is still very sick and is on a heavy dose of Predisone and antibiotics, Vet said this product Hartz Flea and Tick Spray which he refered to as (Crap) should be outlawed.
Thanks Hartz….I will tell everyone I know to not use this product or anything you Manufacture..
