My baby…Dixie was a shipperke, a fine healthy, happy girl. I applied Hartz flea & tick drops to her and my other baby Molly, an Austrailian Cattle Dog. On April 10th, by April 13th, we were at the vet, due to vomiting, and not eating or drinking or peeing or pooping. She had severe tremors and convulsions. She lost 8 pounds within days and looked awful. After continuous visits to the vet for shots and IV’s, my Dixie had to be put to sleep this morning (May 5, 2007). We thought we had this beat, we were feeding her through a syringe, oatmeal, honey, gatorade, broths, anything we could get down her. She was finally starting to drink on her own. Then this morning, I took my girls out for their morning tinkle when my Dixie just laid down. When she stood up, she threw up and promptly fell down in it due to her weakened legs. I scooped her up and had her at the vet’s office within minutes. As I was waiting for him to get to his office, she got a glassy look on her face and when I picked her up to take her in, she was almost limp. I knew this was the end and told the doctor that I can’t handle seeing her suffer. As he gave her the shot, I rubbed her side and told her how much I love her and told her that she was going to go to sleep but when she wakes up, she’ll be in Heaven and I want her to be one of the first one’s to greet me when I get there. I have spent the day crying continuously and looking for her in all her favorite spots. At least she is out of her pain. I will NEVER buy Hartz products again. While my Dixie is gone, my Molly lives on with no adverse side effects…God received an angel this morning at 8:20 a.m. This sadness is deep, but I know one day we will run & jump and play once again. If you love your pet, PLEASE BE CAREFUL what you put on them! By the way…my final vet bill was $831. What an expensive education and what a tremendous loss…
I gave my 2 cats (Nala and Koal) Hartz Ultra Flea and Tick Drops 3 days ago. The seemed very weak, irritable, and lethargic. I left it on overnight and my cats went and hid under my bed, which is very abnormal behavoir for them. So the next day, I noticed that the oil and chemicals were spreading all over there fur and they were trying to lick it. They were also behaving strangely, their head was not steady, and they were barely eating or drinking. So, I took them into my bathroom and washed both of their necks down, as much as I could. My cats are 9 and 14lbs, so there wasn’t much I could do on my own.
I made a plan to have my friend come over the next day and give them FULL baths. I called the vet and asked them what to do.
They told me to bathe them in DAWN DISHSOAP. Specificly that kind, because it kills grease and oils. So we clipped their nails and washed them VERY WELL, then dried them both very well. That was yesterday and after sleeping all night and resting all day today, tonight they are seemingly fine. They are playing, eating more, drinking more, and wanting lots of love.
I don’t currently see any signs of illness, but I know I can’t be fully sure for at least a month. So I will be keeping a close eye on my babies.
I hardly slept last night, I was afraid that my babies were going to have a seizure and die while I was sleeping. PLEASE PRAY FOR THEM!!!!
and NEVER, NEVER BUY A HARTZ PRODUCT AGAIN. My friends and family have agreed as well.
My thoughts and loving prayers go out to all other victims, and I hope all of your cats come through this, and to those who have lost a cat to this…may they rest in eternity until you join them…

We’re having tick problems. Had the house “bombed” 1 month ago (we left the house for 5 hours) by a professional exterminator. We use K9 ADVANTIX once a month on Murphy, our12 year old Scottish Terrier. We haven’t seen any ticks in the house / porch since the “bombing” but Murphy still gets daily ticks from somewhere…They are on her head, eye area, neck. I tried washing with Tick Shampoo. She still gets ticks. So two days ago I bought Hartz In Control – Relfecting Flea & Tick Collar and put it on her about 4 PM. She seemed OK. When we got up the next morning we saw that Murphy had thown up several times on our porch. I immediately took the Hertz Collar off. She didn’t eat or drink all day. She was lethargic. She didn’t want to do our daily 2 mile walk outside (a daily activity for the past 12 years) After contacting my vet, I washed Murphy about 3 PM with mild dog shampoo. She usually runs around the pool area all wet after washing. Not this time. However, by 9 PM she started taking drinks of water and ate a little dinner. This morning she ate normally! What a scare. My vet says never use the over the counter tick collars….too strong.
My wife and I prepared for the flea and tick season by our first time ever purchasing Hartz 5 in 1 drops for our 18 lb,2.5 yr old terrier ( Kinzy) and our 81 lb pound ,7 yr old pitbull terrior (Mojo) .
We love these dogs with all our hearts, they are our family .
Yesterday evening I applied the drops according to instructions and weight of the animals . About a half an hour after application . I began to notice a restlessness in Kinzy .I thought that this sympton would be temporary. Approximately 5 hours later at our ( bedtime) the restlessness was still quit evident. Both my wife and I were treated to intermittant bouts of disturbance by Kinzy. At 3:00 in the morning . I washed her with Dawn dish soap because it was completely obvious and evident that our dogs behavior was created by our application of the Hartz product . I also washed Mojo. The symptons displayed were not simply a itching condition because either dog, never once rubbed or rolled on its back to scratch etc . The restlessness appeared to be more of a internal problem.
We consider this a close call and threat to our family. We will never use Hartz products again ,and will share this information to all sources that we can .
