2 cats victims…1 ended up dead

My mother and I relized that both our kitten Crybaby and are 10 year old cat O(which rarely ever gets fleas),had fleas. And as much as we both hated to do it, we applied Hartz flea and tic drops on both of them.(This was about 7pm)After that they both wanted outside so we let them go. At about 10pm I was leaving and Crybaby came inside…not acting like himself, I picked him up and said “crybaby, you look like your getting sick” knowing my mother was home, i put him down and left. At about 2am i get a phone call from my mother, she was upset and frantic, she said to me “You must come home right away, these cats arent acting right, they are having siezures and “freaking out”. So I got up right away and went home to find both O and Crybaby “having siezures and “freaking out”. Being that it was then about 2:15am, we couldnt rush them to an animal hospital, so we just had to sit there with them…knowing that SOMETHING wasnt right untill 7:30am. At 7:30am…knowing that the vet didnt open for another 30min…we rushed them to the vet…pounding on the door to let us in ! They took them in and told us that the Doc. wouldnt be in till around 10am. SO WE WAIT… Finnally at 10, i get a phone call from the vets office, the ladie on the phone asked me “Have you put any flea medican on O and Crybaby?” I replied “yes, around 7pm lastnight” she then ask me “what brand did you use?” I told her…”Hartz” she said “Ok…thats the problem, well call you back with more information in a little while.” So i sit there…THATS IT…just flea med….I couldnt beleive it…we did this to our babys. The next day, Crybaby got to come home…but as for O, they wernt so sure about. 2 days past without getting any better and 20 visits to the vet just to hold him and tell him everything would be fine…sitting there with him for hours(Yes, for hours) Then on the 3rd day, a phone call saying that O didnt make it ! Crybaby is fine at home…but could have brain damage…but as for O…a part of the family for 10yrs. he didnt make it do to Hartz Flea and Tic drops ! And yes…they still sell the killing product on the shelfs…but we are going to fight this to the end just for O to do as much as we can to get this out of stores everywhere…because it just not right !!!!

Hartz flea spray might have killed my lab

My mother just submitted a story about my family labrador that was admitted to a hosptial this week due to pancreatitis caused by the flea spray. We’re not sure he’s going to make it, because he’s 8 years old. In response, my fiance and I are going to hand out flyers for advertising HartzVictims.org at our local grocery stores and Petcos. I just threw away my Hartz flea shampoo, and we just finished washing our three cats and chihuahua since I also read that the BioSpot we used can cause the same problems as Hartz products.

Say a prayer for Spartacus Maximus while he remains in the hospital lifeless.

Pancreatitis

I am allergic to fleas. When a flea probes me, I get a red dot that lasts for one to two years. Dermatologist says nothing can be done about them. About three weeks ago, the fleas in my yard must have had a baby boom. Sparty, the lab was covered. I freaked. I would have no more red spotty ankles if I could help it. Out of a tribute to the god of convenience, I picked up some Hartz 3 in 1 Dog Spray at the grocery store. I sprayed a light film on ol Sparty. The fleas did not leave. Next day, I sprayed a better film on him. The fleas did not leave. I started giving him a daily spray and brushing. He didn’t seem to mind. The flea population was reduced. I was happy.
Two days ago, Sparty vomited more food than I thought could fit in his stomach. All day yesterday he could not even keep down water. He had rapid heartrate and shallow breathing. He was not interested in food and did not want to lie down on his side.
This morning, the vet discovered he has pancreatitis. He said noone knows what causes it, but a fatty diet is suspected. The pancreas, in addition to secreting insulin, secretes digestive enzymes. If it is inflamed, it could actually digest the surrounding tissues, among other horrible things. He was in serious trouble.
Thanks to the power of the internet, I discovered organophosphate based insecticides can cause pancreatitis. It is called chemical pancreatitis. A little more surfing and I soon learned that was what I was spraying on him. I called the animal hospital and told them and asked them to wash my dog. The personnel there did not believe me until they asked the vet himself. His comments were — I thought they took those things off the shelf, and — that is just not something I would think to ask a pet owner. I actually educated the vet. Amazing.
Sparty is still in bad shape. I know all of you are pulling for him.

UltraGuard Plus – Bad Idea

I know you all love your pets as much as we love ours, so I wanted to share my recent ?pet horror story? with you in order to prevent it from happening to anyone else?s pets.

The other night I remembered that I hadn?t put any flea and tic drops on our cats. It was late, but one of those things I knew if I didn?t do right then, I?d forget to do. Since the pet store was closed, I ran to Wal-Mart and bought the most expensive alternative I could find ? which was Hart UltraGuard flea and tic drops.

My cats reacted as if I was hurting them ? but I just figured it was because they hated that I was holding them down to apply it. Within 30 minutes, they were both vomiting. They vomited for three days straight?were very lethargic and ?dizzy.? Their skin (where the product touched) seemed irritated. When I called the vet, they said that dogs and cats are brought in all the time due to Hartz drops ? some have seizures, others lose hair, some have burnt skin, some have kidney damage, etc. HORRIBLE!! HORRIBLE!!! There are a lot of lawsuits ? but for some reason it isn?t enough to make the FDA take it off the shelves. I also spoke with a manager at local pet store and she confirmed that it happens often. (They do not sell Hartz drops.) Worst of all ? she said they rarely even work.

Co-workers who I?ve mentioned this to have told me similar horror stories about Hartz products. One girl’s dog?s hair fell out immediately and its skin welted up. Another’s dog had seizures. Another friend?s dog got serious welts all over its body, which took several days to go away. I wish I had known?.I felt sooo horrible. My cats aren?t eating very well yet, but are eating again ? which is good.If I need to use something, I will stick to Advantage, Frontline or Revolution (as we have in the past). The pet store manager told me that pets have similar bad reactions to Zodia products (??)

FYI?I did call Hartz. They said that cats get into many things and I can?t be positive that it was the medicine that caused my cats to get sick. Although, my cats are indoor cats and do not get ill often (if they do, it is because they ate a toy mouse). Apparently this is always the reply when people complain to Hartz. It would be my personal opinion not to use Hartz products. I use to think of Hartz as a respectable company that looked out for the welfare of animals.

Ultra Guard plus drops for cats

Purchased last month. June, 2006. Contains 3 applications. Cat weight is 8 lbs. Cat age is over 1 year. 1st dosage was tolerated. 2nd dosage resulted in severe reaction resulting in complete loss of balance. Eye motion rapid side to side. High rate of Heart Beat. Panting. Cat is indoor cat exposed to nothing detrimental. Cat was sleeping on owner?s bed for several hours after application and jumped down to head towards kitchen. Cat let out long meow. Owner responded immediately to assist cat. Cat unable to walk due to previous complications because of severe poisoning as a result of application of the Hartz Product. Cat immediately transported to Vet. Diagnosis was severe poisoning as result of application of Hartz product. Vet mentioned constant contact with patients with same symptoms on a weekly basis. Cat was washed and administered appropriate medication via IV and follow up medication. Cat is home on third day of this trauma. Cat is still unable to walk without losing balance. Cat will eat small amounts of food but refused water and must be hydrated by hand. This is really sad that Hartz still continues to produce this product. They have only changed the label due to previous pressure by owners who have been subjected to death and hospitalization of pets. Still the government refuses to act to take this product out of production and use. Purchased last month. June, 2006. Contains 3 applications. Cat weight is 8 lbs. A Cat Story

By Carolyn Mansur

My daughter Crystal is the master animal care provider in our home, we have two dogs, four goats, and one cat. Kindel is a small cat one year old, a good mouser, multi-colored and playful. I asked Crystal to give the animals a dose of flee drops, she was careful to give each animal the proper amount and follow instructions. This was the evening of the 22nd May 2006. All is well we went to bed. . .

Kindel scratch on my bed then jumped up, I thought there was a earthquake the whole bed started to shiver. I touched Kindel, realizing it was she who was shivering. I quickly got up to see what was going on. I felt the back of her neck the damp flee drops has absorbed. Instinctively, I realized she wad having a reaction to the drops so I immediately washed her off with warm soapy water. She started to convulse, I was nearly in tears.

I woke Crystal, and we went to the kitchen to read the Hartz Flee and Tick Drops for Kittens and Cats under 7lbs. Box. It was confirmed the Hartz Drops has caused the problem. My next step was to get her into the vets, the problem is it’s 1:30am in the morning, no vet is open in our area. And now Crystal is not feeling well, flue like symptoms. ?Oh my gosh I have killed my whole family!? Crystal went back to bed, grumpy and tired, I stayed up with the Kindel, taking her back to bed with me.

She shivered all night, her mouth was clicking open and closed, her big dark eyes stared at my bagging for help. I felt honorable, I caused this. As I sat awake, I realized that I am witnessing is a reaction to nerve gas poisoning. This is what people will be doing after a nerve gas terrorist attack. Now I felt panicky, could this be what our government is trying to avoid. Mass nerve gas poisoning on a wide scale. ?Oh my gosh!?

About 3:30 Kindel has a massive convolution then flat lined, she was still, not breathing, it was then end. I felt relieved she was out of massive pain. I started to cry,. Several seconds later one foot started to twitch again, she was back to massive tremors. Another hour passed 4:30 a repeat of 3:30, she must be dead now! Once again she starts with the massive tremors! I can’t handle this any longer I set Kendal down and I leave to lay down elsewhere. I do not feel well flue like, I think it’s because of the stress.

5:30 Kindel is still alive somewhat quieter, she can control her head as she hears me move around, I turn the light on to check on her, Another massive convolution, the lights are over stimulating Crystal is now up and holding her tightly. We have to wait another hour and a half for the vets to open! What a honorable night.

Off to the vets at 6:45, I knock on the door, we are let in. I relay what is happening, the technician is not at all surprised, she quickly takes Kindel to the back room. Several minutes later she said the Doctor has authorize a specific treatment, and Kindel’s condition is guarded, and even after treatment she may die. Estimated cost over $700.00. I’m a single mother, I caused this, I am responsible so I sign. I head off to work sick with worry for Kindel and now for financial, why did I sign? I can’t afford this.

A honorable night turns into a honorable day. I call the vet’s at 11:00 Kindel is holding her own. The technician asks me if I knew Hartz flee and tick products has been recalled. I am stunned! When was it recalled, where did I buy it from, when did I buy it, how is it possible I used a recalled product??? Griff and anguish turns into anger!

My research begins; I am stunned more stunned then I have every been in my life. As a mother, foster mother, and teacher I have experienced many surprising things, but this one takes the cake! This repeated torment has been going on since 2000, it is six years later and I have to go through it all because a company Hartz does not give a crap about animals! $$$$$$$$$$$$$ Well you (Hartz) owe me $460.00, for vet bills, I expect payment on receipt of this letter!

To think, a company would dig themselves a six year hole and climb in! To think this is what nerve gas terrorism looks like. To think this is what Hartz looks like!

1.I will never ever buy another Hartz product ever again. Except for evidence that the recalled formula is still on the market alive and well to cause continued, and extensive torment!
2.I have called cooperate WalMart and requested all Hartz products be taken off the shelves.
3.I have told a WalMart customer whom had a hand full of Hartz in her hands what happened to my cat.
4.I told the store manager!

5.I told the staff at work and strongly advised them never to use Hartz products.
6.I have signed an on-line petition against Hartz.
7.I have advised all family members to never use Hartz products again!
8.I need to research the on going class action law suit!
9.That’s a six year hole! I should charge Hartz for Kindel’s shovel.

Now I’m worried

My kitten had a mild case of flees and i sprayed it with Hartz. It was over 3 days ago, and he seems to be fine. Should I be worried? It seems as like all animals had a reaction within hours of the product. It has been over three days~~~ and he just as playful and eating just fine. I won’t use it again….but should i be worried????!!??

Please help…………

Hartz says we’re all stupid.

Message: I called in to Hartz today to complain about their product poisoning my pet. The woman, Mandy who said she was a veteranary nurse, took my name, address and info. Then she asked for my cat’s name. I asked her how she knew the poisoned animal was a cat as I hadn’t told her that. She said that most of the people who call are cat owners. I then asked why the product is still on the market if they’ve gotten so many calls. She then said that there are very few calls, but that the ones they get are usually from cat owners. I told her that both of my vets said that they’ve seen many cases of this poisoning, and that there were thousands of complaints that I’ve seen on line. She said “If you’re talking about the people who write in on Hartzvictims.com (I’m sure she meant org), I’ve spoken with most of them and it turns out that their pet problems weren’t related to Hartz products, rather they were due to the people misusing Hartz products by not reading the instructions or overdosing their animals. I just thought some of the members might like to know how stupid Mandy at Hartz thinks they are. Maybe they’d like to correct her (800) 275-1414.

She survived!

I wrote in March about our little schnoodle that was a victim to a Hartz flea collar, we wasn’t sure that she would survive. After almost 3 months she is just this week starting to act like her old self, it has been a hard struggle, trips to the vet., meds, hand feeding. She still has a slight tremor, only time will tell, if the nerve damage that she had from the flea collar, with completely heal it self. If there is any other cases like ours out there, please don’t give up, in the beginning we were told that putting her down, might be the best, but we didn’t give up and she has made it. I only hope, that more people will be alerted to the evils of the Hartz’s Corp. please don’t use those products.
