Hopefully I’m Not Too Late Learning About This!

A few months ago, I overheard assistants at my vet’s office talking about Hartz flea shampoo, and heavily warning against using it on either dogs or cats. My cat is a white male Persian and just recently went through several painful and expensive surgeries, for a small urethra. After all of this, he got fleas. It’s been a bear trying to get rid of them, and even worse finding out about the level of danger with Hartz products.
I just bathed my cat yesterday, Sunday night, and noticed he was shuddering a little this morning. He was completely dry, so it worried me a little.
After work today I went straight to the vet and asked about what I had overheard several months ago.
I was told about how the Hartz flea products had poisoned and killed several pets. Also, that Hartz had been forced to take these products off the market during the summer, but they were back on the shelves now.
I quickly bought some DAVIS flea shampoo, and after comparing the two labels realized how horrible Hartz actually is. Even the warnings on Hartz are scary. “Atropine” is an “Antidote” to some pretty scary symptoms this product can cause.
How can they get away with putting this mess on the market?
“Gentle mild formula”? Sounds like a pretty BOLD lie to me.

I will NEVER buy Hartz products ever again, not even the toys. And that’s really the only brand of cat products in Petsmart or my local grocery stores.

It’s pretty discouraging to find out a company that’s supposed to be all about pets are really killing them.

I’m praying my cat won’t get anymore symptoms, and he seems to be alright as of now. He’s playing, purring, jumping and freaking out about my whistling like he always does. He’s still eating well, peeing lots and cleaning like he’s got OCD.

This cat is the last thing my father had a chance to give me, and he’s all I have left of my father.

Thank you so much for putting this site up and getting the word out. I will certainly help out by putting the banners on my sites and spreading information at work and parks.

My heart goes out to all the owners who have had their heart broken by this awful Flea and Tick drops, and I’m so glad I bypassed them, and frightened I even gave it consideration. You have saved my cat’s life and enlightened me. Thanks.

poor ole jinxie

My cat of fifteen years old, beautiful hair and healthy died a couple months after putting a hartz flea collar on it, and it had a horrible reaction and lost hair. I took that off and treated it with the advanced spot. She tore her hair out till she was bald and got real skinny and boney and died. She ate the night before, used her litter and showed only the above. Then I found her. My beloved cat. Always used other flea preventive measures from the vet. when I worked, but since I retired Ithought I would save some money, and I did, but I lost my darling cat. Sure, you can get your few bucks back, but thank a lot Hartz.

If I Had Known Before I Purchased Hartz

After purchasing Hartz Advanced Flea & Tick Drops and applied it to my 5 year old cat, I wondered what the difference in ingredients was to medications such as Frontline. I went on the web and found the difference to be “phenothrin” which is an insecticide in many powerful insect killers. Then I went to the Hartz website and the first thing I read was that Hartz was voluntarily taking Hartz Advanced Care off the market as of March, 2006. It has been 24 hours since I applied the medication to my cat. It is a Sunday, and I cannot get a hold of a vet today. I am so upset and angry about this. I have washed my cat as the instructions advised. I can still smell the pesticide, and her lip is very swollen. She is a little lethargic. My store agreed to give me a refund for my purchase, but why hasn’t Hartz taken this lethal stuff off the shelves yet. How many other people such as myself are going to purchase this without knowing the consequences. Thank you for this website. I plan to take my cat to the vet as soon as they can get her in tomorrow.

Recieved a response from Hartz.

I recievead a response from Hartz today regarding my cat Jewel who I had given the HArtz One Spot Flea and Tick treatment. I have already sent them the cats medical history and the results of tests that were done when he went to the vet on the 18th of August, but yet they need the information again. They did not send me a product refund with this letter as I had also requested, but they did enclose a mailing label for my convienience! Thank You Hartz..now give me my cat back! I am sending all the information back to them I hope to at least get my money back for the product, but I know in my heart they were the reason for my healthy 4 year old cat going through an agonizing death. I can’t help but think I am at fault..if i had of found this site sooner maybe he would still be here. The vet told me it was Acute Renal Failure due to toxicity..I wondered what was in my house that he would have ingested? And came to the conclusion nothing I have 2 small children and everything that could harm them or my animals is in a cupboard out of reach from them. anyway I will keep you posted with any other response from the company. I am sure they will give me the runaround.

Ear mites??? I think not!

My mother has a beautiful male Russian Blue, named Miskie. He had been acting funny for a few monthe, and they thought he may have had ear mites. He would walk funny, stumble and when he arched his back he would fall over Mom had been treating him daily with drops, and nothing was helping. Finally they took him to the vet, and the asstiant took one look at his behavior, called the vet and told him to rush over. When he arrived they took him in for examination. He asked my mother to come in to his office. He asked her if she used any over the counter flea and tick medications. She said yes, we buy ours from Walmart. He told her that both 20/20 and 60 Minutes had aired a special talking about the dangers of Hartz items. Hartz flea drops have destroyed Miskie’s muscle control, and has affected his neuro system. He will gradually get worse, there is no way to reverse the damage. He has to take a small amount of sedative every day to keep him from becoming to excited. If he does, he could collapse with a heart attack. He is only 1 year old, he still acts like a kitten, and loves to play…It is unfair that he has to spend the rest of his life drugged because of Hartz!!! Someone has to do something about this!!!

Thank you.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing in regards to your product Advanced Care? Control One Spot. I purchased this treatment from our local Zellers store on the 23rd of July and gave it to my two cats which are 5 years of age, and my dog.

After giving this treatment we noticed that one of my cats was getting thin, not thinking anything of it because we had just moved and thought the cat may just be adjusting to the new surroundings. Well if only that had been the case. Last week we had noticed the cat had been vomiting, it had no interest in eating, drinking and besides that we hadn?t seen him in a couple of days. When we took him up to look at him he was limp with no desire to even move, nothing but skin and bones, and all he would do was sleep. We called our local vet and told her of the problem, she immediately asked if there was anything different we had given him. The only thing I could think of was the Hartz product. She then asked if the cats groom each other, I told her yes. She said she had seen the same thing happen in other multiple cat households and to bring him in immediately.

When we got him to our veterinarian she told us that he was severely dehydrated and she would have to run tests to find out what was the problem. We agreed, even though we could not afford the bill. He was our baby. Approximately two hours later she called us to let us know that not only was he severely dehydrated but that his kidneys were failing and that he had to of ingested something but he was too far gone to tell us any specifics. She gave us the option of giving IV medication and seeing how that would work on him, but there were no guarantees he would get better. We made the decision not to prolong his agony, but do the humane thing and let him pass away. She had also said to us that she has seen this before in other cats that have been administered this product. So I had to come home without my ?Jewel? and feel like I was to blame for making my cat being severely sick. I also have to explain to my three year old where his kitty went.

After arriving home from the veterinarians? office I did some research on the product that I gave my cat. I was appalled to find the effects this product and others your company distributes to consumers. People like me that trust in a name and trust that your beloved animal is safe and come to find out that you are still selling this crap on the market and you know peoples pets are getting sick and some even dying from these treatments. I ask myself if anyone who works for you would even use these products even if they were given for free, knowing of the gamble they were taking with their pet?s lives! I am obviously very dissatisfied with this product, and in the future will be boycotting anything and everything manufactured by your company. I will also help spread the word to prevent others from losing a beloved family member like I did in order to save a few bucks. In short, I didn?t save anything; I have a vet bill of $300.00 dollars and couldn?t even save my cat. I am enclosing the remainder of the poison I was sold and a copy of my receipt, I am sure this will be enough to get a full refund of my purchase.

Sincerely,

Marlyce MacMullin

MY CAT, DUFFY

THIS IS ABOUT MY CAT DUFFY, HE IS A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AND A HALF OLD. WE USED HARTZ 2 IN 1 FLEA SPRAY ON HIM ON SATURDAY LATE MORNING. JUST A COUPLE HOURS LATER HE BEGAN TO ACT FUNNY. HE WAS SHAKING, AND WOBBLY. WHEN HE WAS SITTING ON SOMETHING HE WOULD FALL OFF. HE WASN’T EATING OR DRINKING. WE SAT UP WITH HIM ALL NIGHT AND I CALLED MY VET AT 5 SUNDAY MORNING, HE SAID TO GIVE HIM A BATH BECAUSE HE HAD INGESTED THE TOXIC IN THE SPRAY THROUGH WASHING HIMSELF. WE DID BUT BY 10 SUNDAY MORNING HE WAS WORSE, SO I CALLED THE VET AND HE OPENED THE ANIMAL HOSPITAL FOR US TO BRING HIM UP.HE SAID IT WAS DUE TO THE HARTZ SPRAY,AND GAVE HIM A SHOT. HE SAID IT WOULD TAKE UP TO 72 HOURS TO LEAVE HIS SYSTEM EVEN WITH THE ANTEDOTE SHOT.IF HE ISN’T BETTER BY THE END OF WEEK,WE HAVE TO TAKE HIM BACK FOR A BUNCH A TESTS.THAT ONE TIME SPRAY COSTS US $157.00 IN A VET BILL AND MORE INPORTANT MADE MY CAT REAL SICK.I THINK THIS COMPANY SHOULD BE FORCED TO TAKE ALL PRODUCTS LIKE THIS OFF THE SHELF,AND MADE TO REIMBURSE VET COSTS FOR ALL THE PEOPLE THAT HAD TO TAKE THEIR ANIMALS TO BE DOCTORED.
THANKYOU

Seems like we were

On last monday we administered a dose of the flea and tick medicine on the back of my little dog’s neck, she is an 18 month old mix and just a little thing. The next day she began to act oddly, crying a lot and unable to settle herself. We took her to the vet and told him about the Hartz meds that had been used. He said that that is terrible stuff and has killed cats that he’s treated and made many more animals really sick. He recommended that we bath the dog with a mild diluted soap (we used puppy shampoo diluted) and keep a close eye on her and bring her back if anything else happened with regards to her health. Thankfully she started to behave more normally and was able to settle and rest. She does have a nasty sore on her neck between her shoulders (where the medicine was initially placed). The area around the sore is very tender and she will not let us touch anywhere close to it.
I was so surprised to find out about all the trouble this “medicine” has caused. I can’t believe it is still available on the shelves. My heart goes out to all the families that have lost pets because of this awful stuff!

Expensive Lesson

I picked Hartz flea and tick back over the summer, to try over the winter when I didn’t think I really needed to use Advantage. I applied it to our 2 cats, SLY and TROUBLE yesturday. Within 4 hours SLY started having a seizure, we took her to the Emergence Hospital Vet and as we walked in the door the girl working their said ” Let me guess, you applied an over the counter flea medication!”, I just looked at her, because I couldn’t believe she new. 2 hours later we took TROUBLE. Both cats were keep over night for Trimmers and seizures. Trouble got to come home, but poor Sly is really sick, and had to go to our family Vet. She is shaking so hard, we are praying she will make it. So, by trying to cut corners, last night cost $577.00 for treatment, Sly is estimated to run around $300 today, and possibly go back to the Emergency Vet again tonight. I really wish I would have Known about this ahead of time. I will be telling everyone I know about this….

Hartz almost killed my Gandolf

My favorite cat, Gandolf, recently was given Hartz flea medication and was harmed with toxisity. And after waiting 5 mins on the telephone to speak with an actual person we took him to the vet. When we took him in he was shaking severely, his eyes were huge, and could barely walk. I was so scared that I would lose my little kitty who in actuality is a year old. The first thing that came out of the vets mouth was oh god and they rushed him in the back to work on. Since we took him in on Friday he didn’t come home until Monday. The veternarian said we was really lucky and that Gandolf was like a super kitty. We really need to get back at the people who harmed my Gandolf. They should feel the same heartache and pain caused while i waited to see if my kitty would be okay.
