RE: Hartz Advanced Care Flea and Tick Drops Plus
To Whom It May Concern:
Growing up, my family always used Hartz products – especially the flea and tick products – on our dogs and cats. I trusted that the product was safe, and that Hartz was a reliable company. Stores and pet marts certainly wouldn’t carry products that are harmful to animals. Sadly, I was proven wrong.
On the weekend of May 7, 2005, I applied Hartz Advanced Care Flea and Tick Drops Plus (for dogs weighing 16-30lbs) *for the first time* on my 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier mix, Monkey.
On Monday, May 23rd, Monkey suffered a mild seizure – *for the first time*. Monkey has had an outstanding bill of health from day one. Suddenly, I apply a new product to him and find that I am potentially risking his health and ultimately his life.
I call the vet immediately following the seizure. As the vet nurse runs down the list of possibilities and precautions – she finally gets to: “Has he been given any medications?”
My response was: “No. The only thing I have given him was some Hartz flea and tick drops about two weeks ago.”
She gasps and tells me that my dog needs to be thoroughly bathed and then scheduled to come in to have a blood test to rule out any other causes of the seizure. She then explains that in the last few years there has been a very significant increase of fatalities associated with pets whose owners have unsuspectingly applied Hartz flea and tick products.
I was in shock. I immediately begin to research this information and I am over whelmed with the results. My eyes begin to well up as I realize that I have unknowingly put my beloved pet at risk for a lifetime of illness, or death, all because I used your company’s product. Then I see how many others are suffering because they, also, had no idea that your product was so very toxic.
Finding the Hartz Advanced Care Flea and Tick Drops Plus (for dogs weighing 16-30lbs) box in my home with the remaining doses, I look over the labels one more time. I knew there was no such warning on the box – because if there had been I would have never used it.
As I suspected – there is nothing on the directions/warning label that even hints at the possibility of seizures, death or any other severities.
Unfortunately, your product performed less than adequately. In fact, because the product is tied to severe illness and death in cats and dogs, I think the performance is despicable.
To resolve the problem, I would appreciate if your company would do the following:
§ Pull all Cat and Dog Flea & Tick Products off the shelves.
If this is not an option, then change your product to fit the recommended FDA standards and thoroughly label your products side effects. It is your responsibility. I understand I am not the first to have this complaint in the last few years, and until you change your product – I won’t be the last.
I would be embarrassed to work/run a company that puts profit before safety, honesty, and the needs of the consumer. Without us, you would have no profit.
I look forward to your reply and a resolution to my problem. In the meantime, I will be contacting my local politicians, all the stores that carry your product, the EPA, the FDA, the American Kennel Club, Department of Agriculture, the Humane Society, and any other groups I see fit in helping to getting the word out about the effects of your product.
