I used Hartz Flea and Tick drops on my three cats several months ago. There was no side affects from this one time usage. I then started using Advantage Flea and Tick drops for cats the following months and the months leading up to the present. I never noticed any adverse reaction to the Advantage until Sept. 29 when one of one cats got very sick. He did not have convulsions or any such symptoms, but would not eat and was using the litter box frequently. When I took him to my Vet, he said my cat was in renal failure. Needless to say, two days later he was dead.
My dilemma now, is it possible for Advantage Flea & Tick drops to cause kidney failure in cats?
Has any one had their cat become sick with Advantage usage?
I am digusted to hear about the Hartz Advance Care product problems. I was watching a television show when I saw a comercial about it, catching my attention seeing as I have lived with cats and dogs my entire life. I wated about 15 minutes after my show was over to sit and learn about this horrible problem, and to find out what brand this product was. I was disgusted to hear that it was Hartz seeing as I use it on my pets. We havent had the time nor the money to use any recently, but we did, however, use it about 3 months ago. At the time we had no idea about the problem, but yes.. our cats did suffer. One of which had horrible symptoms of staggering around like she was drunk. The other, just the same, but hes a fighter, so he didnt have it quite as bad.
The point is, this kind of thing pisses me off. People put there money and trust into you people at Hartz only to get stabbed in the back y your greed. You people claim to care, yet you refuse to take the time to actaully TRYT to make your products healthy. By buying your products we are trusting you with our family. Our pets are our family and we love them just the same as a brother or even a daughter.
So the next time you decide to buy us back after you supposedly ‘fix’ your products.. think about what quality of product you would want YOUR pet to have.. or your sibling.. or even your child. And then do everything you can to surpass that quality, and then we MIGHT give you a chance if you can prove it to us. I am horribly dissapointed in your company, and I better hear good reasoning for your irresponsability and lack of effort towards your customsers..
Not to mention, it disturbs me very much knowing that your motto is “Hartz. Every Pet’s Best Friend”

i just finished seeing the los angeles KCBS televison news station`s story regarding cats who become ill or even die after their owners apply the Hartz flea and tick topical oinment. NOW i know why my cat died last august. i used the product ONE TIME. he was sixteen and my vet simply told me he was old and i should have “peace in my heart”. my vet didn`t seem to think it was unusual when i told him that my cat went down hill so fast after being healthy. maybe if he had known to ask me if i had used Hartz on my cat then something could have been done OR he could have warned me against using it in the first place!!
i am angry as hell!!!!!
We had occasionally used flea preparations on our cats and had found them very safe and very effective. However, I had always purchased them through my vet (Advantage). One day, I was at Target and happened to see the Hartz product. It looked very similar to the Advantage and was much less expensive. I thought it would be worth a try to see if it worked as well as the Advantage. Being from Hartz, I assumed it would be just as safe. I checked the package to make sure I was purchasing the product for cats and not dogs.
That night, my daughter (22) applied this product (in the proper way, I might add) to the cat and then went to bed. Fortunately, she happened to get up unusually early that morning and looked for the cat. She finally found her under the bed. She looked very sick and was trembly. She came and got me and when I saw her, she could not walk. She was shaking and falling, and really just looked terrible. We immediately took her to the vet. He had to keep her overnight, on IV fluids and medications to stop the convulsions. He told me that this type of medication has done this very often to cats and to never use it again. He said that this condition often is fatal to cats and you have to keep them warm and control the seizures until the poison passes out of their body. This is a first generation of this flea medication and not the same as used by Advantage and other prescription flea medications. This was very frightening for us and our kitty! We would hope that this product is not sold so that there are no other unfortunate victims of this product.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Hartz killed my Tigger…
After using Hartz my cat Tigger lost 4 pound, was falling down
and stumbling, stopped eating and could not hold down any of his food. He became
so ill we had to put him to sleep July 21st, 2003 at Faithful Friend Pet Cemetery.
Kittles also became ill after use of this Flea and Tic problem, younger
and much bigger, he was able to overcome the symptoms. (vet bills back statement)
In the past 3 years I have seen several Hartz flea and tick product victims. It is always heart breaking to us when a client brings in their pet, who they lovingly tried to help by ridding them of fleas only to find they have done more harm than good. Most of our Hartz victim kitties make it, but sadly some do not.
My condolences to all of you that have lost your pets. I will spread the word about this product as I have for the past 3 years and perhaps one day the company will get the message and pull this horrid product off the shelves!
Someone has put a HartzVictims.org banner on their eBay
auction. That’s a great way to spread the word. If any of you are regular eBay sellers, feel free to post a
banner on your auction.

I used Hartz flea & tick on my cat for several months and over that course of time he constantly threw up and lost a lot of weight. Thank goodness I became aware of the Hartz product and immediately stopped. My cat did gain his weight back and has been healthy but it took a long time and I would hate to think what could have happened if I didn’t continue using it. I since started using the Front Line prescribed by the Vet and it works wonders!
I am sitting right now with my 13 year old cat Aster who is cleaning herself after being washed to remove Hartz Advance Flea and Tick Plus. She went to the vet today after experiencing severe shaking and twitches as a result of my dowsing her with this pesticide.
I feel stupid, and ashamed. I ignored the impulse that buying a chemical flea medication was wrong when I selected it at the store.
Aster seems like she’s going to be fine (I’ve got my fingers crossed). After reading other people’s reports, I realize how fortunate I am to be able to say that.
I am also upset.
It goes without my saying that this product has caused unnecessary heartache, and the loss of many very close friends. It also seems that Hartz is unwilling to admit wrongdoing, or to pull the product from production. This is absolutely unacceptable, and I like many of you intend to get pretty stubborn with them. I am fortunately able to decline their hush money – I want to see this product off the shelf.
As I mentioned I also feel guilty. Many of us have grown accustomed to trusting the chemical products in our stores be “safe” based on little more than the fact that they are available for sale. The fact that this cat killing pesticide is still being sold is a painful lesson – I need to be more dilligent about understanding the products I bring in to my life for my own safety and the safety of those in my care.
To any of you involved in an effort to get this product removed from the shelves, please contact me. I intend to undertake my own and will be happy to lend my time to as many of your efforts as I can. Let’s get this taken care of.
We purchased the Hartz Flea and Tick drops for our 9 month year old kitten, Caesar. He is a very active kitten and he runs the household. We used the drops last month and he had no adverse reactions. However, we applied the drops this month and initially he was fine, then it happened he went to full body tremors and shaking. We took him to the vet and spent over 300.00 to save our kitty. We were shocked when the vet said this is common problem from Hartz drops. We were also surprised that the reactions can vary from dose to dose, yet the package does not say that. Thankfully Caesar has recovered and has returned to his “King” status with no thanks to Hartz.
